Conference Championship Game Day Open Thread

Today is the day we find out who is going to the 2010 Super Bowl. From the NFC we could have a newcomer in the New Orleans Saints who have never made the big game. Certainly if they fall short it would be a huge let down for the Big Easy. They face a Vkings team that has made the big dance four previous times but none since the '70's. Plus the Vikings have never won the title so should the 40 year old gunslinger Brett Favre win it all that would certainly be a movie-made ending if there ever was one.

In the AFC match-up we have a Jets team that hasn't won a title since the Joe Namath era in the 60's. They face a 10 time PB and certain HoFer QB in Peyton Manning. As good as Manning is he has one won one title himself, a fact I find curious. There is no bigger truth in the NFL that won player does not guarantee titles, you must have a complete team.

I'm also still stuck on the irony of the fact a Jets win would provide more ammo against the 'rest the starters' theory from teams that have already locked up a playoff spot. The Colts are going to feel pretty stupid if that happens.

That's about all the intro I can manage.

This is now an Open Thread!

Colts over Jets..

Vikes over Saints..

Final Answer…

This is for the million bucks, right?

Just watched the NFL Classic from SB III, 1969

That was the game where Joe Namath “guaranteed” a win over the Colts, who were 19 point favorites, after going 15-1 in the NFL (Jets still in the AFL, before the merger) and posting 5 shutouts, including the NFL Ch game the week before.

Result: biggest upset in sports, up to that time — 16-7 Jets.

That’s why they play the game! Anything can happen.

It was cool to see those oldtimers again. And the rules that hadn’t changed back then! No instant replay, no wired refs — his call was law (several would’ve been reversed today) — when a FG was missed from the 40, the ball was spotted at the 20 (forgotten that one!

So while I think Peyton rules today, there’s precedent for a Jets upset.

Oh, and that was a young Don Shula coaching the Colts, before he moved to glory with the Dolphins — and Chuck Noll on the sidelines as his asst.

Neat to watch it — se it if it comes back again, on the NFL channel.

Interesting thing to think about Panthers' fans:

The Colts D-line was 100% built by Ron Meeks.

Their average weight is 263 lbs.
The Jets O-line average 310 lbs.

So keep an eye on the d-line speed vs. a bigger o-line, because you’ll be seeing that soon in Carolina.

I'm playing the NFL.com Playoff Challenge

where you get points multiplied if you play the same players week to week (provided they win). Well I am riding the Jets D and Thomas Jones. I get 3X their points this week. Since all six of my other players lost last week I spit the six spots, 2 each from the other remaining teams. I have a 10 point lead…wondering if this strategy will work

Since the Jets are on... question for the community

The Panthers ultimately got Charles Godfrey and Gary Barnidge for Kris Jenkins when he was traded to the Jets.

How do you feel about that trade now?

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James The Aussie on Jan 24, 2010 3:45 PM EST reply actions

Well...

Jenkins was turning into dead weight here, and disruptive dead weight at that(I love the audacity of a guy to criticize his teammates for lack of effort when he’s giving none of his own).

Meanwhile, Barnidge and especially Godfrey are doing good things and actually like being here.

Count it as a win for me.

by SlayerGhaleon on Jan 24, 2010 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

It's hard to feel bad about that one

since Jenkins wanted to leave. Could we have picked better players? Probably…but hindsight is always 20-20 with draft picks.

Could we have gotten more? Seems so but then again his value was reduced because of the injuries…and he did go on IR this year.

Man, that was a fun 1st half, definitely worthy of a conference title game.
It’s a shame the Jets let up the easy late score.
Can the Jets offense keep this pace up and can the D get the pressure on Manning they were getting in the 1st quarter?

by paydirt16 on Jan 24, 2010 4:46 PM EST reply actions

The missed FG was huge. Jets can’t afford to panic here and force Sanchez into mistakes.
They’ve lost the momentum but the game is still ripe for the taking. Looks like they might need a big Turnover on D to break the Colts rhythm.

Why’d they change how OT plays out? games taking up too much air time?

Sean Payton is getting nervous

Moving away from their core skills

after the 1st down

I think the saints will put it away.

by LittleKing on Jan 24, 2010 10:11 PM EST reply actions

Wow.... refs are giving this to the Saints

How was that ball catchable?

Ahh man thats brutal….
to have officiating come into play with a game like this

There is no way that should have been pass interference. The 1st down call was questionable, but I accepted it…

And now in a few days there’ll be a video on nfl.com talking about why that call was the right call, with some mediocre reasoning.

Of course

Absolutely

The Vikings shouldn’t have won… but I dont feel like the refs gave them a chance in OT

The turnovers are what ultimately cost them the game. Especially the one at the end of the first half which squandered easy points going into the locker room.

by paydirt16 on Jan 24, 2010 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

Man that review was close…that defender put his hat on the ball and knocked it back…I don’t know about that.

of all the playoff field goals not to miss….

by EyeSack on Jan 24, 2010 10:21 PM EST reply actions

Yeah…no way the Colts D shuts down the Saints.

I am resigned to hearing Who dat?!" for the entire offseason.

You don't like Peyton in a shootout?

I sure do

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James The Aussie on Jan 24, 2010 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

it will come down to defense

who has the better defense that day as both teams have great offenses. and doesn’t everyone say D’s win championships.

by LittleKing on Jan 24, 2010 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

Or who commits fewer penalties and turn overs..

In which I’m going with the Colts.

Helpful reminder for James at seasons end: 2nd Rnd CSR Fan Draft Pick.

by D-Ranged1 on Jan 24, 2010 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

The only reason this game wasn’t a blowout was because the Vikings defense did an outstanding job keeping them in the game after all those turnovers the Saints defense is so apt at causing. The Colts D will be unable to do the same.

by SlayerGhaleon on Jan 24, 2010 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

I'd have to disagree..

I personally thought Minnesota was killing themselves more so than the Saints D causing turn overs, which I don’t see Indy doing.

I wasn’t impressed with the Saints and if it wasn’t for the play calling they likely wouldn’t have won. It doesn’t feel like a victory justly won.

by EyeSack on Jan 24, 2010 10:35 PM EST reply actions

If the Vikes stop dropping the ball they win

or even if Favre doesn’t throw that last pick

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Jan 24, 2010 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

Though Favre pulled a bonehead move, they wouldn’t have had to go for anything but a field goal had it not been for that penalty to knock them out of range. I’m just really annoyed, it’s all too convenient the Saints win, makes for a better story line.

I love lazy reporters

They’re going to have an easy week seeing how many Katrina references they can fit into the next two weeks.
