Conference Championship Game Day Open Thread
Today is the day we find out who is going to the 2010 Super Bowl. From the NFC we could have a newcomer in the New Orleans Saints who have never made the big game. Certainly if they fall short it would be a huge let down for the Big Easy. They face a Vkings team that has made the big dance four previous times but none since the '70's. Plus the Vikings have never won the title so should the 40 year old gunslinger Brett Favre win it all that would certainly be a movie-made ending if there ever was one.
In the AFC match-up we have a Jets team that hasn't won a title since the Joe Namath era in the 60's. They face a 10 time PB and certain HoFer QB in Peyton Manning. As good as Manning is he has one won one title himself, a fact I find curious. There is no bigger truth in the NFL that won player does not guarantee titles, you must have a complete team.
I'm also still stuck on the irony of the fact a Jets win would provide more ammo against the 'rest the starters' theory from teams that have already locked up a playoff spot. The Colts are going to feel pretty stupid if that happens.
That's about all the intro I can manage.
This is now an Open Thread!

Just watched the NFL Classic from SB III, 1969
That was the game where Joe Namath “guaranteed” a win over the Colts, who were 19 point favorites, after going 15-1 in the NFL (Jets still in the AFL, before the merger) and posting 5 shutouts, including the NFL Ch game the week before.
Result: biggest upset in sports, up to that time — 16-7 Jets.
That’s why they play the game! Anything can happen.
It was cool to see those oldtimers again. And the rules that hadn’t changed back then! No instant replay, no wired refs — his call was law (several would’ve been reversed today) — when a FG was missed from the 40, the ball was spotted at the 20 (forgotten that one!
So while I think Peyton rules today, there’s precedent for a Jets upset.
Oh, and that was a young Don Shula coaching the Colts, before he moved to glory with the Dolphins — and Chuck Noll on the sidelines as his asst.
Neat to watch it — se it if it comes back again, on the NFL channel.
Lets go Jets!

Yeah... I'm glad it was trained
I had the image in my head of the Eagle flying into the wall of the dome…. it would have been grim

Jets offense is looking good...
This could be an interesting game

Interesting thing to think about Panthers' fans:
The Colts D-line was 100% built by Ron Meeks.
Their average weight is 263 lbs.
The Jets O-line average 310 lbs.
So keep an eye on the d-line speed vs. a bigger o-line, because you’ll be seeing that soon in Carolina.

I'm playing the NFL.com Playoff Challenge
where you get points multiplied if you play the same players week to week (provided they win). Well I am riding the Jets D and Thomas Jones. I get 3X their points this week. Since all six of my other players lost last week I spit the six spots, 2 each from the other remaining teams. I have a 10 point lead…wondering if this strategy will work
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
The other six:
Vikes: Rice & AP; Colts: Wayne and Clark; Saints Brees and Carney.

Edwards for the TD!
80 yards…nice pump by Sanchez

Since the Jets are on... question for the community
The Panthers ultimately got Charles Godfrey and Gary Barnidge for Kris Jenkins when he was traded to the Jets.
How do you feel about that trade now?
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
by James The Aussie on Jan 24, 2010 3:45 PM EST reply actions
Well...
Jenkins was turning into dead weight here, and disruptive dead weight at that(I love the audacity of a guy to criticize his teammates for lack of effort when he’s giving none of his own).
Meanwhile, Barnidge and especially Godfrey are doing good things and actually like being here.
Count it as a win for me.
by SlayerGhaleon on Jan 24, 2010 3:48 PM EST up reply actions
It's hard to feel bad about that one
since Jenkins wanted to leave. Could we have picked better players? Probably…but hindsight is always 20-20 with draft picks.
Could we have gotten more? Seems so but then again his value was reduced because of the injuries…and he did go on IR this year.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Fair points by both of you.
For me its pretty simple… Jenkins didn’t want to be here and he can’t stay healthy.
Win for me

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Oh no!
It has been such a busy week, I forgot to set my play off team! Means I’m stuck with players from tonights game only!
Helpful reminder for James at seasons end: 2nd Rnd CSR Fan Draft Pick.
The missed FG was huge. Jets can’t afford to panic here and force Sanchez into mistakes.
They’ve lost the momentum but the game is still ripe for the taking. Looks like they might need a big Turnover on D to break the Colts rhythm.
+1
It also doesn’t help that Lito Shepard is playing like garbage

The NFL has to sit down and work out what the rules for roughing the passer will be
There can’t be a disparity across the league. If Peyton got blindisded like Sanchez just did it would have been 15 yards

Good point
Tough to make all refs call every play the same though…but yes, Manning get some special love usually
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Disappointing.. I’ve grown to like the jets for some reason. Which is odd because I’m not usually a fan of anything coming out of Jersey
lol, Aww come on now, South Jersey ain't that bad....
we dislike our counterparts in the North, we’re mostly rural, we have beautiful beaches and the largest contiguous tract of undeveloped wilderness on the Eastern seaboard between Boston & Richmond.
With that said, my wife & I can’t get out of this god forsaken state quick enough!
Say what you want about the Vikings, their fans don’t say things like “Who dat?!” and “Geaux Saints!”
That’s my thinking, anyway.

Well that should bring those Saints fans back to life.
This will be an interesting series for the Vikes. They sort of caught the Saints by surpise on the opening drive. I agree they need to slow the game down if they’re to win.
I don't know if the Vikes can survive a shootout.

It’s hard to say who the ref’s will favor today. The golden child of the NFL or the team of the city in need. Tom Brady isn’t on the field so it’s not so clear cut
My guess is they'll favor Favre
If they don’t Brett will likely send his skeleton minions to haunt them in the night

tied 25th in YPC among RBs with over 100 carries.

A little bit of a chokefest to end the half.
I guess its only fitting that they exchange bad turnovers to end a completely even 1st half .
He lost yet another one...but got it back
Did you see Jason Kyle our former LS had a false start. JJ Jansen filled in nicely.

it will come down to defense
who has the better defense that day as both teams have great offenses. and doesn’t everyone say D’s win championships.
Or who commits fewer penalties and turn overs..
In which I’m going with the Colts.
Helpful reminder for James at seasons end: 2nd Rnd CSR Fan Draft Pick.
The only reason this game wasn’t a blowout was because the Vikings defense did an outstanding job keeping them in the game after all those turnovers the Saints defense is so apt at causing. The Colts D will be unable to do the same.
by SlayerGhaleon on Jan 24, 2010 10:34 PM EST up reply actions
I'd have to disagree..
I personally thought Minnesota was killing themselves more so than the Saints D causing turn overs, which I don’t see Indy doing.
Helpful reminder for James at seasons end: 2nd Rnd CSR Fan Draft Pick.
I wasn’t impressed with the Saints and if it wasn’t for the play calling they likely wouldn’t have won. It doesn’t feel like a victory justly won.
