CSR Conference Championship Prediction Thread
Two days until we find out who is going to the Super Bowl and I thought we should start our predictions. I have to admit that though I want to take the home teams in both cases I'm going with reverse psychology, at least for one of the games. Let's start with what the involved SBN bloggers are saying:
In the NFC Championship, we have the Vikings at the Saints. Here's some analysis from a new writer over at The Daily Norseman:
MilCardFan: Mismatches: The biggest mismatch on the field this past Sunday was Minnesota’s defensive line against Dallas’ offensive line. They were on Tony Romo like a fat man at a buffet from almost the first play, and didn’t let up until they had to loosen their belt buckle for fear of intestinal stomach rupture. I think Dallas’ offensive line is better than what New Orleans has to offer, especially at tackle. I think this is the biggest mismatch on the field, and one the Vikings must exploit if they are to win. If they don’t, New Orleans will be able to take advantage of the second biggest mismatch on the field: Drew Brees against the Vikings secondary. It’s not that the Vikings are void of talent, but if you let a guy like Brees get comfortable in the pocket and go through his progressions, he will shred the Vikings.
I have to agree, the Vikings D line is going to eat up LT Bushrod. Expect a big day from the Vikings DE's. From Saintsational:
I hope the Saints take advantage of the mediocre offensive line of the Vikings. Brett Favre can take over a game but if the Saints defense can create good pressure and keep Favre uncomfortable in the pocket, their chance of victory skyrockets.
I'm not so sure I would call their line mediocre. What are some of the other keys for the Saints? Well they are hoping to use...keys:
I’ve personally never heard of this tactic before but it’s simple and makes sense. One set of keys alone doesn’t really seem intimidating but think about the high-pitch of 69,000 sets of door openers clinking and clanking inside a closed roof building. And I’m not saying fans should do this instead of screaming and yelling. Oh no. I’m talking about jingling your keys in addition to shouting at the top of your lungs. Think about the decibel possibilities! And, of course, this is totally legal since all fans are allowed to bring their house keys to the game with them. Catch us now, Goodell!
So I’m calling for a Key-Out this Sunday. Yeah, you heard me right. Janitors, unite!
They better have a little more than that in the game plan. I'm feeling the upset:
Vikings 31 Saints 28
AFC prediction after the jump...
In the AFC we have the Jets at the Colts. I've been really impressed with the Jets defense and I think they will do a better job containing the big plays the Colts can make. Let's start with the visiting Jets and our blogger from Gang Green Nation:
John B...Sanchez was terrific against the Bengals. Against San Diego...he didn't do a ton. The important thing is he has looked comfortable and confident. He looked overwhelmed at times in the middle of the regular season. The Colts game seemed to be a turning point. Mark realized how good his defense and run game are. If he avoids making dumb decisions, the Jets have a great shot at winning. The Jets don't need him to do much, which makes his situation a lot easier than many rookies have.
A defense and running game can take you far. If the Jets can get pressure and keep it close they can surprise yet another team. The Colts on the other hand appear to still be defending their decision to bench their starters against these same Jets. From Stampede Blue we have BigBlueShoe:
You gave up and quit on a meaningful game back in December not because you simply wanted to beat the Ravens in the Divisional Round. You did it to win the Super Bowl, and anything short of that means the "quitting" strategy was a failure. By benching starters in the way it was done in a game fans, media, and players very much wanted to win, the excuse you gave afterward was that rest was more important for the long haul; the long haul obviously being the Super Bowl.
How ironic would it be for the Jets to beat the Colts, assuming that if the Colts had not benched their stars in their regular season match-up they would have beat the Jets and kept them out of the playoffs? That kind of irony only happens in movies.
Colts 24 Jets 13
I'm curious to hear your opinions.

My Question
Should we cheer for the Saints for division pride… or should we cheer against them as division rivals…
I’m torn someone help me out…
it is tough
If Favre wins then maybe he will finally retire…for real. That’s worth pulling for the Vikings alone. If the Saints win I guess there is the NFC South thing but then again we will have to deal with super-arrogant Saints fans all next year. Not looking forward to that one.
I think I want the Jets to win!

OH no
Not the saints… but I do want an NFC team to win… and now that you mention the saints fans I think I’m leaning towards the vikings…
I think we will have to deal with arrogant Saints fans regardless
The fact that they won their division with ease and that we struggled this season will be enough fuel for their fire with or without a Lombardi.
I want to pull for the Saints because of the division loyalty (and because I want as much on camera time for Kim Kardashian as I can get), but the notion of Favre finally retiring is enough to entice me to go with the Vikes.
Vikings vs. Colts in the Super Bowl
Done
You’ve got to beat your division to get in.
This year our division beat us.
Go Vikes.

I'm in two minds
1. I want the Saints to lose because the vast majority of their fanbase annoys me
2. I want the Vikings to lose because I don’t think they deserve it for jerking around Sage Rosenfels and essentially buying a title by getting Favre.
Untimately I want the Jets to win. My Dad grew up a Jets fan, and by proxy they’ve become my AFC team (if I had to pick one) plus I value defense and a running game more than a flashy offense.

I’m going Colts over Jets and Vikings over Saints.
I am pretty indifferent with the Colts and Jets but I definitely don’t want the Saints to win. Not only do I want to avoid Saints fans that just won a Super Bowl but if Kim gets married, we may miss out on some good…. cooking videos… courtesy Miss Kardashian. Then again, marriage just might entice her to put the oven mitts on and provide us another cooking video. Oh, man, are these decisions hard or what. All I know is, I’d love to be Reggie Bush for 30 15 minutes.
If the Vikes win, I wonder if Favre will propose to her instead? If that’s the case, they can keep the videos private. I’d hate a whole cooking video of Favre singing pants on the ground in his birthday suit while Kim is obscured from view in the background. Ugh.
Colts 21 – Jets 10 // Vikings 34 – Saints 21

Who dat?
Umm, that would be Jaren Allen turning your face into a pancake Drew Brees. Better luck next year :p

I’m feeling rather empowered after going 0-4 last week. Obviously, me picking a team to win is the kiss of death for that team. So with that in mind I’m picking the Saints and Colts (but I’m hoping for the opposite.)
Exercising the D-Ranged technique of reverse psychology NFL prognostication:
Saints 59 Vikings 0
Colts 60 Jets 2
Being serious, I too tend to favor teams with a strong D and a good run game. I think barring Favre blowing up, the Vikes have the goods to score enough points and get enough pressure on Brees to earn a trip to the SuperBowl.
It’s hard to imagine the Jets getting out of Indy with a win, but with that Defense and Rex Ryan at the helm who the hell knows, anything could happen. One thing is certain, this is a nightmare matchup for Indy having laid down at the end of the season thus allowing the Jets to squeek in. Jaxon, I agree, a Jets win here would have the irony of a movie script and would make for a great story heading into the Super Bowl. At this point I’m rooting for the Jets to go all the way.
LOL, the Super Fans....You know.....
Rex Ryan is the son of Buddy Ryan who was the Defensive Coordinator of “Da Bears” Super Bowl team, which got me thinking…. what would happen if the entire Jets team missed the flight to Indy and Rex Ryan had to play against the Colts by himself, but naturally he was shrunk into a mini Rex Ryan:
Mini Rex Ryan 75 Colts 6
colts vs. saints
I think the colts will play the saints. the jets are overconfident and are going to get embarrassed. it’s going to be a close game, but they’ll be embarrassed because they are overconfident. revis can shut down wayne, and then there’s collie, clark, garcon and addai out the backfield. manning will complete 35 of 50 quick slants for 185 yards and 3 TDs, the last two coming in the final 5 minutes.
the saints are the most complete team, and brees will not be denied. he won’t say it, but he loves watching the chargers lose, and so do i. brees wins one for new orleans, and bush finds a way to prove that last week was just a fluke for him.
revis can shut down wayne, and then there’s collie, clark, garcon and addai out the backfield.
That’s what San Diego said. “Oh, Revis can shut down Jackson if he wants, but we can just throw it to Gates, Sproles, etc etc etc.”
We saw how that turned out.

SD played terribly..
I hope the Colts/Jets game is a bit more interesting.

true, true
but i think rivers is overrated, sproles is a newer, faster dave meggett (and nothing more), and sd’s receivers aren’t that good. here’s the thing, though…it’s not like the rest of the jets defense sucks. the whole team is good. is kris jenkins playing? i think he’s on IR.

I like the Jets over the Colts
Their defense can handle Manning, and if they run the ball, they have as good a shot as anyone. Plus the irony is too much
I can’t stand Favre! And apart from a few Saints fans (mostly young teenagers like me) most are pretty nice. Still, a Super Bowl will be tough to live with, for either team. Can the Cardinals go instead?

peyton manning vs mark sanchez
i think the jets are the better overall team. i just think that in the end of the close game (the last 5 – 8 minutes), it’s gonna come down to manning stepping up and sanchez making one or two costly errors.
Predictions!
Brett Favre wins the Super Bowl.
Vikings over Saints
Colts over Jets

Only in the movies...
Manning wins his second title

Did I mention that I whole-heartedly believe jingling your keys in some attempt to rattle the opposing team is absolutely, bottom of the barrel, cheap? I mean, do they really think their team is so terrible that they have to resort to some stupid trick in order to win? Where’s the pride? All I see is greed.
