Keep or Cut: LB Landon Johnson
This week's addition of Keep or Cut features LB Landon Johnson. You may recall Johnson was the Panthers premier FA signing before the 2008 season, coming over from Cincinnati after leading them in tackles the year before. Johnson offered the flexibility of being able to play all three LB positions in a 4-3 defense and was expected to challenge Na'il Diggs for the starting SLB spot. Since I have him on Keep or Cut that obviously didn't work out so well.
Here's some key stats for Johnson in his two seasons:
2008: Zero starts, played in 15 games, 16 total tackles; 1 FF; Salary Cap Hit: $1.075M
2009: 3 starts, played in 10 games, 20 total tackles; Salary Cap Hit: $2.1M
I realize players cannot predict or help when an injury occurs but it just sucked that Johnson essentially waited 1.5 seasons for his chance and then he only gets three starts and bam! he's on IR just when we need him. So the question is, was Johnson really a disappointment or is Diggs simply a better player than we thought? Considering the Panthers just extended Diggs contract seems to indicate that Panthers have no intention of trying to find another guy to replace him.
Does that mean Johnson is out the door? Should or will the Panthers even make an offer? I can't imagine they would offer that amount for a back-up LB. I don't have Johnson's stats on Special Teams because he was not signed for that purpose but even if he rocked on ST certainly LB Jordan Senn is still a better option.
The Panthers already have 5 good or great LB's on the roster in Beason, Davis, Diggs, Conner and Anderson. Is Landon Johnson a keeper or do we cut him? Let's here your arguments one way or the other.

He's a better fit elsewhere.
He’ll probably leave for somewhere with less LB depth. He’s probably best suited as the leader of a weak LB corps, like he waas in Cincy.

Keep him!!!
With no salary cap next year, there’s no need to cut anyone for money reasons. In fact, I don’t think that they should cut anyone before the mandatory cuts to trim the roster. He was the first back-up to replace TD so the coaching staff still believes that he can play.
If we do that..
And sign him for any more than a year, we then have to account for him when there is a salary cap in place.
Is that within the intent of your post? (Just trying to make sure I didn’t misunderstand what you’re saying.)

Who's to say JR won't look to cut costs?
There was also a salary minimum…each team had to spend so much. Maybe teams try to move down the scale? JR is on the Executive Committee…he’s not going to go rogue and over pay players.

He would be wasting his talent by staying here
i dont think it would be a good idea for him to here because all he is for is a special teamer really. sure he got in every now and then on defence but not enough ro make an impact. i hope he does leave so he can get a chance to start else where. I’ll always remeber that FF on the last game of the 08 season on the kickoff.
I'm torn between both answers..
I want to say KEEP because…
Meeks has really turned ALL of our defensive talent around, from starts to back-ups. I feel like Johnson really didn’t get his chance to return to “starter form” and settle down before going out with injury. I’d love to see LJ get back to game speed and comfortable with our system to see what Meeks can turn him into. If his injury didn’t occur, we may not even be having this conversation (could be a no-brainer). With that doubt in my mind, I have a hard time saying cut him.
I want to say CUT because…
I want Eric Norwood with our 2nd round pick. I personally want he, Beason, and Davis as our starting LB’s one way or another by the start of the season following the one coming up (I don’t say 2011 because we don’t know for sure yet). If that’s the case, I don’t see reason to keep Johnson.
So, in the end, I suppose I’ll say cut because I want Norwood.

I AGREE!!
I would love to see Norwood in a Panthers uniform. The lb corps would really be good then!:)
Sorry, man...
But there’s no way they’re gonna extend Diggs, make him feel needed and wanted, and then show him swiftly to the bench.

Which is my reason for giving Norwood a season to settle in before starting.
Helpful reminder for James at seasons end: 2nd Rnd CSR Fan Draft Pick.
But Diggs is on board for several years.
If they plan on moving him to just ST duty, that was a silly move.

Rev?
You must have a little Pat Robertson in you! A little harsh from the Rev…lol

Dang Jaxon! I was only joking! Lol
To be honest, I think cutting Landon Johnson would be a good way to save cap space. We already have capable backups in James Anderson and Dan Conner, with the former probably taking over for Na’il Diggs when he decides to retire. If we can get Johnson for a discount, I say definitely go for him. If he wants to command 3-5 million a year though, it’s time to move on.
Landon Johnson was taken with the intent of him taking over for Na’il Diggs, and it didn’t happen. He may want more money than what backups get, but he hasn’t showed he deserves it.
Also, those freaking refs robbed the Clemson Tigers again. Freaking ref giftwrapped the game to GT and robbed us of a wonderful OT thriller!

He definitely won't get $3 mil a year.
He’ll get lucky to get much more than $2.

Agree..he's going to take a pay cut
but I bet he wants to leave Carolina anyway…there has to be better opportunity elsewhere

CUT
James Anderson played well enough to cement the backup spot.
He can be better used by another team
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
I voted cut ~ simply put we got burned on the free agent market and it happens
I don’t blame anyone L. Johnson, Hurney, Fox, or even Richardson for going after Johnson b/c he seem as if he was on his way to being a breakout player in the NFL. Granted Johnson was never going to be a T. Davis or a J. Beason but he should have beaten out N. Diggs and didn’t the past two training camps for the SLB job. Simply put we got burned on the free agent market and hey it happens.
However with the above being said I voted “CUT” b/c Johnson has just simply not gotten it done. Johnson has underperformed and I watched him play in a couple of games and he is not any faster than Diggs, cannot tackle near as well, and in coverage I consider both equal as well. N. Diggs was a great player for us down the stretch in 2009 season and without him we would have had alot of problems and surely wouldn’t have went 4-1 down the stretch either.
Simply put it was a good move by our front office at the time but just didn’t work out. I wish Johnson all the best but their is no way he is going to be back in 2010 with the Panthers anyway b/c we have bigger needs such as what to do again with Peppers drama, QB position (although we should just let Moore be that “C” of the ship, and of course WR position needs the biggest upgrade and figuring out what to do with KEMO and the DT spot is another big need b/c we need to get younger in the DT position quick.
James Anderson finally proved he belonged and could start if needed and J. Senn did nicely on special teams so where does Johnson belong on our team the answer is simple he doesn’t.
Go Panthers ~

Cut.
I can’t recall a single impact play he’s made. If he’s due to make about the same as Keydrick Vincent, who was the subject of the first Keep/Cut thread, there’s no comparison in their relative value or contributions. Vincent plays in what, 50 or more snaps a game; Johnson in half that at best?
There are at least 5 other LBs on the team that exceed his contributions, when you factor in ST tackles, which he hardly makes, even when he’s on the field.
What about the picture above
That’s a picture perfect helmet tackle…that was probably shrugged off be Turner on his way to a big run!

FORGET IT!!!!!
I don’t know how we all missed it, but Johnson is only under contract foer next season because he reworked his old one last year to help the team with the salary cap. The Panthers would NEVER pay him back by cutting him just to save money.
Sure they would...
players never lose money when they restructure/extend like that. Why would they restructure in the first place? Usually the team guarantees more of the money on the back end. Trust me they can and will save money on that $2M #6 LB spot. With five good or great LB’s the Panthers can use a middle round pick on a LB and slide him in there is they don’t like their current options (Senn or Kelvin Smith)
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
I'm thinking they don't see Smith as an option at all.
If they liked him, why would they have waived him off their IR list? You don’t kick a guy out of the building if you like him at all.

If the money's guarenteed...
there’s no savings by cutting him. If They save money and LJ gets screwed, they’ll have trouble getting anyone to restucture in the future. I say the only way he gets cut is if he can’t make the roster based on what he (and his compitition) do on the field.
It's not guaranteed.
Some portion of it is, but I’d say it’d be no more than $500K or so. And, as stated above, he didn’t get “screwed” by restructuring. He actually guaranteed himself more.

$500K doesn't compute
He reportedly saved them $1M on the restructure. Therefore I would think that he would be guaranteed at least that much this year.
Any extra money like that would be spread over both year.
