Keep or Cut: OG Keydrick Vincent

The Panthers have a few of these decisions this offseason and this will probably be one of the harder ones. Once the Panthers two injured tackles return, Jordan Gross and Jeff Otah, fill-in Travelle Wharton can move back to LG sending the up and coming Mackenzy Bernadeau to the bench.

So should the Panthers save some money and cut Vincent and move Bernadeau to RG? Let's look at some stats courtesy of Pro Football Focus (thanks Bigdavis). PFF has Wharton the highest ranking Panthers OG at +2.2, who grades better at pass blocking than run blocking.

Vincent's potential replacement though is located way down the list just above Vincent, like right above him. Vincent grades a -17.4 yet Bernadeau scores only a -16.5. Yet there strengths are polor opposites. Vincent is the better run blocker at -8.2 versus a -15.8 for Bernadeau. Bernadeau grades much higher though in pass blocking (-1.2 vs. -4.7). given the RG is mainly a run blocker the stats would suggest we keep Vincent.

Star-divide

So another option is move Wharton to RG and let Bernadeau remain at LG. Neither arrangement excites me but at least we get some younger blood on the line. But what about our depth? That leaves the rookie Duke Robinson as the lone back-up at OG. As much potential as the young Robinson may have the Panthers will give him another season to mature. So if we cut bait with Vincent they will have to find another FA to replace him. How much money would they really save simply to hope the new guy can pick up the system quickly. If there is one thing we know about our line is that at some point our back-ups will have to play.

There is one other option and that is practice squad Brian De La Puente. This 2nd year player out of Cal seems on the light side at 308lb to fill in at RG given the Panthers prefer jumbo OGs.

What are the other options Panther fans? So keep or cut?

I voted to cut

It’s not that Vincent is bad, per se but he would command money that could be better spent elsewhere. With the emergence of both Mackenzey Bernadeau and Geoff Schwartz it makes it harder to justify keeping a higher priced vet.

I will say, though...

We haven’t seen Schwartz actually playing inside, have we? It was talked about early in his career, but I don’t think they’ve tried him there yet.

I should have included salary info...

Vincent made $820k in 2009 with a cap hit of $1,045,000. I bet the Panthers make an offer but look for a home team discount. Vincent will certainly look around.

I also said no. I think Bernadeau should get the start next year and I don’t believe Vincent will resign for back-up money.

PS.

It sure is lonely on the bottom half of that poll. I’m actually surprised, I figured more people would have been impressed with Mr. “I don’t have an easy first OR last name to call me by”.

I voted to keep Keydrick right where he is.

I watched him make a lot of good run blocks. Plus there’s evidence that Bernadeau can successfully transition form LG to RG. I’m glad that MB and Schwartz got extensive playing experience, but to me they’re still subs. With Gross and Otah back, we’ ve got our starters intact.

It's also important to note...

That Bernardeau is the closest thing we have to a backup center.

I voted to keep

but I also feel that if we walks it’s not a huge loss. I would rather have someone that is familiar with the system then a new guy at this point. I think we should offer a contract but if he wants more than so be it. I have faith our OL coach could make a new player fit.

+1

I would give him an offer, but if he wants too much $ (however much that maybe), then let him walk.

Keep him around.

I think that the Panthers needs at other areas means that there would not be much of an upgrade out there, so familiarity would be be the tie-breaker.

Chemistry and consistency is very important for an offensive line. Vincent has been a solid contributor — gotta keep him.

by ThiagoTyson on Jan 17, 2010 9:31 PM EST reply actions

We should keep him, if we can get him for a good salary.

We have Duke Robinson and Bernadeau under him, and Duke especially I think could use another year to develop. I think we check out and see how the competition is at that position next year.

I just hope we get another capable OT. Wharton had a rough time transitioning to tackle when Gross went down, it took him a few weeks before he looked like he was settling in. If we can get a late round guy like we did with Duke, I’d be on that banwagon. ^^

This

But some teams that need a good run-blocking guard will pay him around 10-15 mil over four years to sign him. How much are we willing to pay?

Really?

You think a guy who’s never even made $2 mil in a season is getting signed to a $3 mil./yr., 4 year deal at age 31? I’m thinking not.

Maybe 3 mil a year for three years

I didn’t know his exact age, but he has proven to be a competent, mauling guard in his time here. Someone will be willing to pay for that.

He's proven to be essentially the same player he was before he got here, though.

He was always a solid, but underwhelming starting-level guard. I really don’t see a team committing to him for anything more than a year or two. He’s obviously hit his ceiling as a player.

From what I saw when we signed him

he was just depth, with the potential to grab a starting job. He’s exceeded expectations, I think some team will be willing to overpay.

Pretty solid depth...

Given he started 47 games for three teams in the five years before he got here. You don’t earn starts that many places by being mediocre.

Why was he in so many places to begin with?

As I said elsewhere...

It’s kind of up to Vincent. If he thinks he can get a decent deal elsewhere (good salary, long-term contract, and probably a guarantee to start), he probably goes. But if he’s happy here in Charlotte, he’s a good, steady veteran piece who would be well worth bringing back at a similar salary to what he was at this year ($1 mil), if not a little higher.

He also has to consider

if he wants a superbowl ring or money. If he stays he’ll get the ring. :) How’s that for optimism for next year.
