First Look: Philadelphia Eagles @ Carolina Panthers Game Preview
As we are all aware, the Panthers will open their season at home against the Philadelphia Eagles. Fox doesn't have a good track record against the Eagles, going 1-4 against them, with the only win in the 2003 playoffs when we went to the Superbowl. Philly is best known for the offense with names such as McNabb, Westbrook, the up and coming receiver DeSean Jackson. Yet their Defense is no joke, ending the 2008 season ranked third in the league.
So what can we expect on Sunday. We know the questions our team has all to well and it's hard not to see past them at times. We bring the same offense with hopefully a few new twist and play makers. It appears we have found a reliable 3rd WR in Kenneth Moore and a great 3rd running back in Mike Goodson. And of course we can't forget our TE. Hopefully our John Fox and Jeff Davidson can take advantage of or talent.
The Eagles run a west coast style offense, focusing on the short passes relying on YAC to move the ball. Brian Westbrook has excelled in their offense, having at least 1200 all purpose yards since 2004 and in 2006 & 2007 over 2000 all purpose yards. If they have watched any of our preseason games, they will attempt to take advantage of our soft CB play. Giving a 10 yard cushion to a west coast style offense is not the best strategy. Also, with two new DT that are expect to play the space eater in the middle, we don't know how our middle rush defense is going to play. They would also be wise to test this early in the game.
With that said both the teams have questions about the run defense, especially up the middle because of injuries. The middle run defense can defined as the DT, MLB, and safeties. Paul Domowitch, from the Philadelphia Daily News, does a good job of breaking down the Eagle's D troubles. Basically, first they lost a starting safety to FA and then their MLB to injury. Plus their now backup MLB looks to miss the game.
Just like the Eagles should test our middle defense, the Panthers should return the favor. Their weakness ties in nicely to our strength. I would expect we take advantage of this and pound the ball all day. Mixing a few plays to the WR and now the TE, the Eagles D should also have their hands full.
At the end of the day, I really like our chances against the Eagles. Depending on the state of both defense, this could end up being a high scoring game. We will return near the weekend with a close look at our O vs their D, and their D vs our O.

Woo Hoo, It's about time!
That’s all I have to say, cuz I don’t have time to read it right now. But that’s actually probably a good thing.

You are strong Westbrook....
But we will break you….

I gotta tell ya..
i feel good baby real good
JAKE IS THE BEST OPTION FOR CAROLINA FOR THE NEXT 2 OR THREE YEARS GET OVER IT!!! AND JULIUS PEPPERS IS THE BEST DE IN THE NFL 100% EFFORT OR NOT!!! PERIOD! WE CANT DO ANY BETTER SO SHUT THE F#@K UP
Weapon X is GONE
Picture our defense without Beason and Harris, but make that Harris x 10. Then replace Godfrey with Salley and throw in another strong safety and you get a taste of their problems. They not only lose physical talent, they lost a lot of leadership and no one back there can cover.
It’s really too bad we don’t have a Wesley Walls in his prime right now.
The leadership loss ......
of Dawkins, Stewart Bradley and Jim Johnson are huge for the Eagles. I was a bigtime Eagles fan and know this team well. On defense the Eagles tackles and corners are outstanding, the ends are decent but undersized, the linebackers, safeties and defensive coordinator are big question marks and looked very vulnerable in the preseason.
Here’s hoping the Panthers stuff the run down the Eagles throats and set them up for play action which has always been the recipe to beat the Eagles defense.
GO PANTHERS!
I still don't see how the Panthers are home dogs....
+ 2.5 at home? I know the pointspread doesn’t really have much to do with the actual final score, It’s only used to get even amounts bet on each side… Considering the home team gets 3 points automatically the oddsmakers think that the betting public has no faith whatsoever in the only team in the NFC to win all their home games last year. Hmmmm I wonder others thoughts on the pointspread are? Does the general public outside of our fan base still think the Eagles are that much better than the Panthers? Heck Give me the Panthers 34 – 21
Nationally I keep hearing that Philly is a Superbowl contender
And that Carolina will finish 2nd or 3rd in the division.
We get knocked for strength of schedule and Jake ARZ fiasco. However, Panther fans know better. We have seen Jake have those games and bounce back many of times. And paper schedules mean little come the end of the season. Pittsburgh got knocked for having the toughest paper schedule last year, but made it all the way to the Superbowl.

Also we were dogs last year game one, against a "Superbowl contender"
Yet finished the season 4 games better than SD. Wouldn’t mind seeing another 4th quarter shocker!

I'm with you
I’m an Eagles fan, but you’re right, that line is screwy. I would say the Panthers should be a about a 3 point favorite. The Panthers were 12-4, 8-0 at home last year in the reg. season, the Eagles needed a miracle performance from Michael Bush and the Raiders at TB just to make the playoffs last year. I think because the Eagles have been consistently good over the last 10 years, that the lazy national media is overlooking the problems with this team. I guess we’ll see on Sunday…

I like our chances
Of running the ball up the guy and throwing in a few play actions every once in a while with Smitty streaking across the middle, one juke and he’s in the EZ! (st louis playoff game anyone)
Just read this http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagles/20090910_Eagles_Notes___Eagles_rookie_thrust_into_starting_role.html
Now that he’s not only a safety, but the Eagles’ starting free safety, Victor “Macho” Harris has fully embraced his new position.
A cornerback coming out of college, the fifth-round pick from Virginia Tech was switched to free safety during the spring and wasn’t quite sure about the change at first.
A cornerback converted to safety being burned in his first game in the NFL? Sounds familiar to me!
Mr. Macho.... Meet Mr.Smith....
Ahhhh I wish that Smitty could still do the touchdown celebrations… Remember when he “rowed the boat” on Fred Smoot ?
or in chicago in the playoffs when he slid off the pole!

Some breaking news out of Philly.....
Eagles offensive lineman Shawn Andrews was unable to practice today (Thurs) due to his recurring back injury.
If Andrews can’t go on Sunday, Winston Justice would probably start. Also of interest, the Eagles brought in Jon Runyan for a workout this morning.
