Beason and Stewart Complete Full Practice

Though I don't have much else to report in this story I just got a tweet from Andrew Mason that LB Jon Beason and RB Jonathan Stewart both completed a full practice:

panthersJon Beason & Jonathan Stewart practiced fully. Both "looked really good," John Fox said. #Panthers #NFL

So that just made my day. The only remaining question now is will they play Sunday. I'm betting yes for Stewart already and yes for Beason if he practices tomorrow as well. They will need to see if the knee swells overnight.

Okay I can add this news, we've announced our team captains for the Eagles game:

panthers#Panthers also named captains; Jon Beason, Jake Delhomme, Jordan Gross, John Kasay & Julius Peppers. More later @ http://www.panthers.com

One surprise is seeing Peppers on the list. He isn't know for being much of an on-the-field leader but maybe there is some underlying reason for adding him to the list.

My day has been made.

My guess is J-Stew yes, Beason no.

But I hope they can both go. I like our captains too… not too sure why Pep is one though, he clearly doesn’t want to be a leader.

Peppers gets included as a team captain because...

1) They typically name 2 guys from the defense, 2 guys from the offense, and 1 from special teams.
2) He’s been a team captain before, hasn’t he?
3) He’s still a veteran guy that the other players respect.
4) It’s a show of team solidarity to put him out there. It demonstrates they’re behind 100% and the fans should be, too, given he’s our best DE and still one of the best in the league.

But that’s just my four-cents,

Peppers gets included as a team captain because...

He is Jerry Richardson’s “Pet” Player… and as we all found out last week. What Mr. Richardson wants, Mr. Richardson gets.

Beason will play

I’ve had the same injury many times. Once the initial swelling goes down and you can move the knee without much pain, you’re good to go. That is unless you re-aggravate it.

Oh, and Beason is a hell of a lot tougher than me. :)

It completely depends on the severity of the tear.

The good news is that the MCL is a relatively large ligament and can tear half way and still be stable enough to be active on.

Peppers shouldn't be a Captain

Moose, Steve Smith, Hoover, Chris Harris, Deangelo Williams, or Chris Gamble all should be Captains in front of Peppers in my humble opinion….

Captains

I really don’t care who they pat on the back in the locker room we know the Jake and Jon run the team on the field and that’s what matters. Alot of people don’t like Jakes playing ability but he runs his side of the ball just fine.

by Cwilly1 on Sep 9, 2009 3:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed

And with all that going on, everyone should just do their jobs like Smitty and D-Will. Those guys beleive in Jake and do their jobs the best they can. Others need to follow suit, and then we’ll get our next dozen wins.

by usana_gaines on Sep 9, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

motivation

So we all know that Smitty has been the heart and soul of Carolina for a couple years, but D-Will made a statement that he’s the best RB in the league. So with that in mind and the Panthers drafting Goodson, Goodson looking like starter material, and then with us claiming Sutton off of waivers, do you think Beef Stew feels like he’ll be playing to make sure the coaches remember why he was drafted in the 1st round. Like McNabb looking at Vick, Stew will be eyeing the competition and working that much harder. Bring on the Eagles and let this weekend be their first loss of 12.

by usana_gaines on Sep 9, 2009 3:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Jonathan Stewart doesn't need to prove anything.

He rushed for over 800 yards his rookie season. That was proof enough and now being ready to go against Philly in reinforcement.

His stats were really quite remarkable for a rookie. 836 yards, 4.5 ypc, 10 TD. To put that in perspective that’s a higher ypc and more TDs than Matt Forte, and only 450 less yards on 132 less carriers. Stewart would be starting on over 50% over teams in the league and they would be thrilled to have him.

If anything, we’ll be seeing alot more of J-Stew this season than last. Last season the split was 273/184 DeAngelo… I’d expect to see it closer to 255/205 this season.

by James The Aussie on Sep 9, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno, even if Stewart can play in week one, he’s still going to be held up a bit by his injury for the first part of the season. Let’s also remember that D-Will also proved himself last season in a big way and in my opinion showed that he can be one of the elite running backs in the league. As good as Stewart is, it’s awfully hard for the Panthers to be motivated to give such a talented running back as DeAngelo LESS carries. Granted, I am a bit biased because he’s on one of my fantasy teams. But still, Williams has a knack for the home run play, and I’d like to see what he could do with as many if not more carries than last year.

by pancanbra on Sep 9, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Motivation for less carries for Williams...

Longevity. It’s one of the primary benefits to running a multi back system. How much sooner would Fred Taylor have retired without MJD?

Williams will be a Panther for a long, long time. Might as well secure our investment by letting Stewart run

by James The Aussie on Sep 9, 2009 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He will be rusty after not practicing all camp, and most of OTAs

If Stewart practices all week then I imagine Fox might play him very sparingly. But it just doesn’t make sense to run Stewart real hard his first week back, especially when the RB behind him has been playing so well.

He will probably get a few carries

Probably 5 or so, but less then 10 touches (rush and pass). I think Goodson will be about the same. D-Will will probably have about 20.

by Scrantsj on Sep 10, 2009 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At least some of those carries...

…will likely get split with Mike Goodson as a change-of-pace back. He gets to the edge better than Deangelo and Stewart. He’s also a bigger threat on 3rd down draw plays and screen plays. So I expect to see him taking at least a few touches away from both RBs from last year.

by NSpicer on Sep 9, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll be surprised if Goodson gets 50 carries this season.

How Fox feels about rookies, and the fumbles make him a scary prospect as a third down back. The kid is great, I just really think we’re imagining we’ll see him more than we really will.

by James The Aussie on Sep 9, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How does Fox feel about rookies and fumbling?

Based on history… It was only last year that Otah, Stewart and Godfrey were all immediately starters or major contributors. And he didn’t hesitate to give fumble-prone Foster continued opportunities, even with DeAngelo behind him.

Fox doesn’t however like to play guys who don’t practice, but Stewart IS practicing now. So Philly could really go either way between Stewart and Goodson. If Stewart comes back full throttle though, then I’d agree with you that it will be difficult for Goodson to get many touches.

on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city

by southtunnel on Sep 9, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, let me qualify that

Typically John Fox does not play rookies unless it is a glaring area of need. The above rookies were all taken 1st or 2nd round to fill major holes in the team.

With rookies like Everette Brown, Tony Fiamatta or Mike Goodson the case is different. They dont need to start and will be learning from the bench.

Truth is, your below point is right. It’s ridiculous that our biggest offensive concern is which of our stellar RBs we get to use. I just really don’t see Goodson getting much time when we have two 1,000 yard backs.

by James The Aussie on Sep 9, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lol, you just tacked 200 yards on Stewart

That means Goodson nearly had 500 yards this preseason. I kid… I know your point. Preseason is good for getting you worked up over new blood. But to think Goodson, Rosario, Barnidge and Moore are all not going to be big contributors in Fox’s system, is very short sighted. Smitty, Moose, DeAngelo and Stewart will get there opportunities. Everybody else will be fighting over what’s left.

I meant for the upcoming season

J-Stew had 836 in 2008… it’s a stone’s throw to get 1,000, with his 4.6 average he would have only needed another 40 carries. I have a sneaking suspicion we may see two 1,000 yard back this year.

We also aren’t even including Fiametta into the mix… he could be a major factor on third and shorts too. Our running game is the best in the NFL… and it’s about to show everyone what we’ve known all summer.

by James The Aussie on Sep 9, 2009 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would suggest...

that Fox plays rookies if they’re better than the Vets at the same position. King was a first year starter, right? The only exception may be Williams, and when he was a rookie Foster was way better at blocking and receiving, so an argument can be made that at the time he may not have been a better runner, but was a better all-around back.

If that’s the case, Goodson will sit because he’s not as good as Williams or Stewart. Brown will play because he’s better at rushing the passer than anyone but Peppers. Fiametta will sit. etc…

by Cyberjag on Sep 10, 2009 6:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm...

I get the sense Everette Brown will be a situational pass-rusher for us…not a starting DE. Tyler Brayton probably still gets the nod there. But on obvious passing downs, we did show the Peppers-Brayton-Johnson-Brown lineup during the preseason. And I expect that to continue. And I hope it’s successful for us.

As for Goodson, there’s no way he starts (at anything other than KR), and he won’t eclipse Williams or Stewart (unless Jonathan goes on IR…which I doubt). But I do think Fox and Company will put Goodson in there on offense more than the traditional rookies we’ve had pass through Carolina before.

But that’s just my two-cents,
—Neil

This is a really great discussion!!!

We are bickering about which of 3 RBs is going to dominate this year. Lol. It wasn’t that long ago that we would have been drooling over any one of our current RBs compared to Banana-hands Foster.

Regardless of how right we think we are about “which RB will do what”, not a single one of us will be disappointed when one of these guys rips one for a 30-yard TD. Great problem to have!

when we ran out of RB’s. He has vowed with fist raised and channeling his inner Scarlet O’Hara to never do without a talented RB ever again!

Let's see.

I’m convinced that Beason will play. He’s a beast, and until he cannot physically walk I’m sure that the Panthers cannot keep him from running onto the field. I’m also suprised that Julius Peppers became team captain as well. He doesn’t give off that impression of a leader. He just stands there with that big goofy grin, and you kind of smile because it’s funny.

I’ll bet that Stewart is just fine though. I’ll bet he comes out and annihilates the Eagles in goal line situations.

DeAngelo was every bit as good in goal line situations.

The game doesn’t hinge on Stewart’s return. Stewart wasn’t even the best rookie RB last year, and therefore doesn’t even come close to the guy some are touting as the best RB in the league. If a RB annihilates the eagles this Sunday, it will be DeAngelo.

What a luxury we have to be able to have this kind of argument

That is to argue which of a handful of our RBs will be the one to annihilate one of the best teams in the league. :)

Haha! I would have to agree with you! I love this kind of argument.

However, during goal line situations I’d prefer to keep Stewart. You have to figure, he’s a fresh pair of legs coming in after DeAngelo has driven the ball down the field, and I still think that he’s more of the bruiser ‘run between the tackles’ guy than DeAngelo Williams. Mostly I would just take him based simply on the pair of fresh legs. Imagine the defense, tired as can be. They’re all panting, but they’ve finally gotten DeAngelo tired as well. Then he walks off the field, and in stomps the incredible hulk.

The ball is snapped, the defense sighs a collective ‘shit’ and are thereafter owned.

I’ll agree with you though on the notion that the game doesn’t hing on Stewart returning. He can pull off some incredible runs. He can fare just as well as Stewart can on the goal line. I just like me some fresh meat, not some beef that’s hung too long.

I'm not so sure about that

Stewart looks more like a bruiser… Especially in his earlobes(just ask Jake). But I remember DeAngelo moving the pile more than Stewart. Where Stewart is deadly is in the secondary. DeAngelo can break tackles, but Stewart can literally drag guys.

If you really want to torture a tired defense… I think they would least likely want to chase a speedy Goodson all over the field. Which is why I can see him coming in the 4th quarter, especially if we have a lead.

Aha~

Point point! Especially if they’ve been out on the field for a long time! He’ll have to cut out on those fumbles though! We wouldn’t want to squander a long lead. Don’t forget how long Fox held Williams from the starting job in favor of Foster because of that very reason.

And you wonder why he doesn’t fumble the football.

I know it’s a gimmick, but it’s a gimmick that is working in this NFL.

Many people still think we drafted Davis specifically to neutralize Vick.

by Cyberjag on Sep 10, 2009 6:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm one of them

Vick was our achilles heel twice a year and Davis was the fastest available linebacker in the draft (I know he was a safety, but every scout projected him as a linebacker).

He is a great player in his own right, but I fully believe the selection was to get an ‘anti Vick weapon’ as well as filling a gap left by Will Witherspoon.

Of all the positions though...

RB is one of the easiest to get back into the swing. So much of an RBs ability is just pure, raw talent which is why they can normally make more of an impact as a rookie than other positions.

The major strides RBs make in the NFL is in reading defenses and studying tape.

If Stewart spent alot of the summer in the film room and becoming more of a student of the game I think he’ll be back to form by week 2 or 3 at the very latest.
