Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Mark Jones

Mark Jones was released by the Titans earlier today. Remember, he was a casualty of a tight salary cap for Carolina. Considering the inconsistency in the Panthers' return game, I wonder what the probability is of bringing him back. With some restructuring of the team budget, perhaps it's feasible now. We aren't in dire straits for a DT anymore, Nick Hayden really stepped it up against Pittsburgh, and Leonard looks promising. I'm starting a petition to bring Jones back!! :-)  He did well in Carolina. I wonder why the Titans cut him. Thoughts?

MARK JONES MUST COME BACK – NO FUMBLES LAST YEAR !

by docnolz on Sep 5, 2009 6:21 AM EDT reply actions

Mark Jones doesn't have homerun capabilities either

But why do you think we aren’t in need of a DT anymore? Because Nick Hayden played well against Pittsburg’s #2s, and Leonard against their 3s? Neither of these guys would be starters on any other team… how could they possibly be the answer here?

Just give em a chance Southtunnel

Just give these young guys a chance Southtunnel, and if they can’t play after a couple of game, then make some moves, but give these guys a chance…

Hah...

I think he prefers to give Dwayne Jarrett their chances instead. ;-D

I kid, Southtunnel…I kid.

Giving Jarrett a chance at #3 or #4

Is way less of a risk than making average-at-best DTs starters. With that being said, I re-watched the Pitts game, and Hayden looked really good. I am just not confident yet that he can do it in a real game, against #1s.

But then again, I am not a huge Kemoeatu fan either, so I ought to welcome some of these new comers.

Think back to Steve Smith's rookie year...

maybe not too many of us were Panther fans back then. It was 2001.

Steve was mainly a punt returner that year. As a WR, he only caught 10 passes.

He had 8 fumbles, losing 3 of them — most of these were on bobbled punts, including the Green Bay game, where he fumbled twice.

But he overcame that with experience, and became the dependable star we all cheer for now.

Let’s not let one — or two fumbles — cause us to wring our hands. Let these young guys, providing they’ve got the ability to break one, develop their skills. Mark Jones didn’t fumble, sure, but he couldn’t break one for a TD, either. Getting him back isn’t the answer, it’s being patient with the kids like Kenneth Moore or Captain Munnerlyn, and letting them grow into the job.

We haven’t had a punt returned for a score in I can’t remember when — but we will by one of these two, if we give them the chance

I doubt anyone’s going to jump to sign Mark Jones right away anyway. So, we might as well see how Kenny Moore and Captain Munnerlyn (if he makes the roster) can do on punt returns in these first couple of games. If they have a rash of fumbilitis or otherwise struggle significantly against the 1’s of opposing coverage teams, then I say we bring Mark Jones back for dependability.

But that’s just my two-cents,

i disagree

Mark Jones was pretty good as a returner but he would take money and a roster spot we can’t afford. I would rather them go after another DT. The problems on our return game can be fixed with time. Bigdavis made a good analogy with Steve Smith and his first year as a returner.

I like Mark Jones, BUT

I like Mark Jones as he was a SOLID returner for us last year. He wasn’t great and didn’t have great speed to hit the home run, but he was a solid and most importantly consistent punt returner.

….BUT….

The problem is that we are probably not going to have a spot for him on the depth chart nor much cap space to fit him in. I have watched Captain Munnerlyn through his years at SC, and I know his abilites….please give him a chance….and IF he and Kenneth Moore cannot do anything significant (which I highly doubt), and IF you can clear cap space and IF you can clear a roster spot for him without cutting an integral backup, then invite him back, I am fine with that….but give Captain Munnerlyn and K. Moore a shot…you really don’t have a choice due to the roster and cap space…

Further on Mark Jones...

he fumbled a PR in the pre-season for the Titans, and has a hamstring injury — not exactly prime time material advantage over what we’ve already got — plus Munnerlyn can play CB, and Moore’s already our 3rd or 4th WR — so Jones would take another roster spot; at best, he’d be an unneeded 5th WR.

…we already have a better KR than Mark Jones in Mike Goodson. We’re still hoping Captain or Kenny step up to handle the PR duties. Kenny Moore is a better WR than Mark Jones. And Captain gives us decent backup ability at CB. So, I say let the young guys have their chance. If it doesn’t pan out…and Jones heals up from his hamstring injury…and we’ve got the room to bring him in…then lets do it later in the year, assuming no one else picks him up.

But that’s just my two-cents,
