A friend from Pride of Detroit

Just a quick fanpost to solicit a QB. I'm not gonna pretend that I know enough to asses the problems or fixes with your beloved team, I can only empathise with you. And maybe offer a quality veteran QB for trade. All kidding aside, Culpepper looked good coming into pre-season, In good shape and finally healthy. (he did have a M Fer of a knee injury) And I believe he is still capable and determined to start in this league. What do you think, you want him. "Let's Make A Deal"

Hey, thanks for stopping by and thanks for the suggestion.

But, I’m going to have to say no on this one.

Our major problem right now is the coaching staff. The media are talking up that Jake Delhomme is the problem, but sadly I think we’d all be a little more confident right now if QB was our only concern.

Do you guys really want to give up Culpepper? No doubt Stafford has looked impressive, but if he goes down who is left on your depth chart?

Good luck to your Lions, congratulations on your win last week and I hope it’s the first of many. It’s good for the NFL to have Detroit become a good team again, and with all the woes in Michigan right now I’m sending good mojo to you guys.

culpepper

I would love to have Culpepper on our team. All we ask Jake to do is throw quick slants, quick outs, and deep balls…and Culpepper can do that better. He has a stronger arm and a quicker release. He is less prone to fumble or throw interceptions, and he can run for a couple yards here and there, too. If we did trade for Culpepper, I would like to trade Jake, Pep and a 3rd day pick for Culpepper and a 1st rounder. If we got Culpepper, or any other veteran to come in and compete, the first few games would kind of suck because they would have to learn the play book. However, we would still need to bring in a young guy to develop for our future cuz Culpepper is about 32 or 33 himself.

I'd have to say 'maybe' on this one

mid-season trade? I don’t see how that would work unless Peppers was included but I don;t see that happening. If the Lions cut him loose I would be all for bringing him into camp to compete in 2010.

No if you are saying just for funsies, then I agree with Usana we would want your first round 2010 pick since we traded away our 1st rounder. So what would you want in return for Culpepper and your 2010 1st rounder?

BTW, feel free to beat the crap out of the Saints this year.

Shoot, if we’re putting Detroit’s first on the board too… then count me on board.

thigpen

so why couldn’t we pull the trigger on a tyler thigpen trade earlier, or right now? we shouldn’t even be having this conversation. we could’ve brought in thigpen, kellen clemens, culpepper, derek anderson, brady quinn, jason campbell, or some other guys via a trade.

i really don’t think anyone on that list would be a long term solution, but our long-term solution is in college right now.

by usana_gaines on Sep 30, 2009 2:08 PM EDT reply actions

Do you really think any of those players (with the exception of Anderson or Campbell) are better than Delhomme? I sure don’t. Even as a short term solution I don’t think they’re better than who we have on the roster.

Do we need a future QB? Absolutely, 100%, unequivocably. But, lets not move back to the QB situation again, there simply isn’t any evidence that it’s our achilles heel at the moment. That wonderful distinction belongs to our coaching staff who need to get on the same page ASAP.

Honestly, we wouldn't know until we pull the trade

But I can tell you it can’t get any worse than the way things are with QB situation right now. Plus we don’t expect them to be a playmaker for the Panthers, he would just need to manage the game.

But the bigger problem here are the coaches. I’m now convinced that it’s not entirely Jake’s fault since he was never suppose to make that many throws. He’s at his best when we run the ball and have him throw play action passes.

by Shockers on Sep 30, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

It was never entirely Jake's fault

The past two games Jake has actually played manageably well but we’re just not playing good enough as a team to win. Our quarterback will never light it up with big stats in this offense (run-based) so what do people expect the stats to look like when we can’t run the ball?

by R-F on Sep 30, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

My point exactly

He was never suppose to make that many throws. I’m saying that the bigger problem here are the coaches

by Shockers on Sep 30, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree - but just some things to consider

I of course wish that Jake would throw less and we were able to run the ball more. However there are two underlying factors that come to my mind…..

First, our running game just hasn’t been that successful. Just using the Dallas game as an example…..take away Delhomme’s two runs (those weren’t run plays) and we ran the ball 14 times. Of those 14 rushes, 5 of them went for a yard or less. Four of those rushes were on first down and they had a total net of -8 yards. Our running game is now putting us behind the down and distance, putting us into more passing situations.

Second, you have to take into account the game situations. The only time we have had a lead in the second half was against Dallas and that didn’t last long. We have never been leading in the 4th quarter of any game so far this year and when we get in those situations, we are forced into passing. You could certainly argue that we should still be running the ball when down and I agree – but what can we do when our running game isn’t getting it done?

by R-F on Sep 30, 2009 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Our running game's been pretty obvious IMO

Reminds me of the time I played Superstar mode in Madden. I’d want my QB superstar to have the best stats, so whenever the CPU would give me the running play, I’d just have my RB run up the middle no matter what, so the CPU wont have a choice but to give me a passing play. When I saw our running game against the Cowboys, that’s exactly how I felt.

by Shockers on Sep 30, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

i think all those guys would be better, but...

jake really doesn’t have to change much to play as well as last year. the defense and the special teams are the real problem, and jake can’t help those guys. i mean, kellen clemens isn’t going to come in and start running tackling drills for the defense, but somebody has to.

by usana_gaines on Oct 2, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you

watching all these trades happening are making me mad right now. obviously thigpen and garcia were both “available” but hurney and fox never thought twice about picking up a potential starter.

by Shockers on Sep 30, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

What makes you think

That Garcia would come in and pick up the offense in an extremely limited amount of time and know the offense well enough and be better than Delhomme?

by R-F on Sep 30, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

garcia

jeff garcia plays well in offenses he knows, the west coast offense. he’s extremely smart and mobile, and would definitely protect the ball better than jake, but he really doesn’t have the arm strength to throw better slants, outs and deep balls than jake. wasn’t jeff davidson the offensive coordinator in cleveland when garcia had his first ever 0.00 QB rating game? he stunk it up in detroit and cleveland before going to west coast offenses in philly and tampa.

by usana_gaines on Oct 2, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

We would not know if Garcia would fit well

But the point is that if Delhomme continues to have a bad season, we do not have a short term solution right now. We’ll never know how well any of these guys would’ve fit in, because Hurney and Fox never took the effort to get these guys. Seeing how Garcia was signed, and Thigpen was traded, they were not impossible acquisitions. If Delhomme happens to be benched in the future, would you want Moore or Feeley over Garcia or Thigpen?

by Shockers on Sep 30, 2009 6:24 PM EDT reply actions

No thanks!

But throw us a 2nd rounder and we’d love to give you Peppers!
