Panthers vs. Cowboys Keys to the Game
When you look at this match up and consider what the experts are predicting it's hard to disagree with their analysis. The nine point favorite Cowboys are at home on Monday Night, they've won three in a row against a Panthers team that has lost seven games in a row (counting preseason).
Yet for some reason there is hope in Panther land. This team has pride and isn't one to back down on a big stage. The ball has not bounced their way in so long they have to be due. Here's my thoughts on what the Panthers could do kick start there lucky bounces. They need to change things up, they need to act un-John Fox like.
On offense start with a no huddle as soon as you get the right defensive personnel match-up. From the shotgun run draw plays and passes into the flat to the RB's. Start with formations and plays that the defense did not plan for.
After playing some of there base offense for a while they could then run the wildcat. I'm not saying plain wildcat runs up the middle but some with misdirection involving a WR and 2 RB's. I realize this all sounds far-fetched but I really think the Panthers need to do the unexpected early in this game to keep the Cowboys from gaining a lot of confidence.
So other more obvious keys the Panthers need to focus on:
- They have got to get a pass rush on Tony Romo. The Giants showed the QB will make mistakes when pressured and he takes deeper drops than the Falcons QB so they should have time to get at him
- They have to stop the Cowboys running game enough to force some 3rd and longs. We still are not sure if RB Marion Barber will play but I bet he doesn't. Though they lack another RB with Barbers power the two back-ups are no slouches. The Panthers will not be able to afford any missed tackles
- The have to cover their kicks. Giving up good starting field position goes counter to the ‘bend but don't break' defensive philosophy. Giving the Cowboys offense short fields will doom the Panther defense in this game.
- Avoid the dumb mistakes. Sure this goes without saying every week but the Panthers have to overly sensitive to turnovers and the effect on the flow of the game. An early turnover could have a very negative effect on team morale for the rest of the game.
- Break out the X-factor late in the game: When the Panthers are protecting a lead late they need bring in RB Mike Goodson and run some of those quick pitches and let a tired Cowboy defense try to catch this guy. Lets see what this kid can do in live game action.
What other keys to this game am I missing Panther fans?

"When the Panthers are protecting a lead late"
I like that part of the plan.

My Keys to Victory
-Presure Romo EVERY down
-RUN the ball – even if you have a couple of 3 and outs the run game with D Wil and J Stew WILL WORK
-Cause a turnover or Two.
-Good protection on Punt coverage
-Quit throwing stupid little hitch plays to Steve Smith unless for once you are going to fake it and have him “go”
-RUN THE BALL SOME MORE
-Protect the QB and give him an extra half second to set and throw
-DONT GET CAUGHT UP LOOKING AT THAT STUPID VIDEO SCREEN… It’s just a big ass TV guys
-Turn Beason loose
-RUN THE BALL A FEW MORE TIMES

Pressure Romo every down....
I would love to see the Panthers use some blitzes tonite that aren’t yet on film from the first two games. Romo seems to implode when he starts thinking too much. Romo’s got the raw talent, but you can definitely get in his head, more so than most NFL QB’s.
GO PANTHERS!!!

Great analysis Jaxon...
I couldn’t agree more with the no huddle, and bringing in Goodson when they’re weak. I can guarantee you what the first play of the game will be:
PA pass deep to Steve Smith
It always seems when we’re in a rut the offense starts the game with a big time bomb and it normally catches our opponents off guards.

Saints have Jets, Giants, Dolphins and Falcons next.
Anyone want to care to wager they’ll wind up in Charlotte 4-3?

I think if the Panthers win it's in a shootout
They put up 30+ on a good NYG defense. The Cowboys seem to be able to put up points even with the turnovers, and that bothers me. Our offense looked good last week, but not 30+ points good.

yes, that is worrisome
Where is our D better than the Giants? Maybe our offense can consume more of the clock? The offense will not have much room for error in this game.

Best of luck guys...
I am heading out to get a prime seat at a sports bar. Unfortunately Jerry decided I didn’t have enough $$$ to attend the games on a regular basis.

I smell turnovers
Not sure if they’re apple or peach, but turnovers are coming our way.

Is this going to become the common thread?
Last week it was butterscotch pudding with the Falcon and apple/peach turnovers this week?
For the record, I like cherry.

Far-fetched indeed...
Wow, Jaxon. You really think the Panthers will come out and be “un-Fox-like?” Seriously? I’ll believe it when I see it. Much more likely they come out running to test the Dallas run defense early. If that’s successful, it’ll set up the pass. If it’s not successful, they’ll go three-and-out or self-destruct on penalties or settle for a FG or something. Then, our defense will get tested. I have this feeling Dallas will exploit the holes as easily as Philly and Atlanta did…whether they have Marion Barber or not. In fact, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice might even pose a bigger threat (due to their breakaway speed) given our tackling woes. If one guy misses, either of these RBs could be gone. And that means Romo won’t even have to worry about being pressured…
I hate to be the wet blanket, but I just haven’t seen the Panthers put it together yet on the field in all three phases and that includes the first two regular season games and the entire preseason. That’s really troublesome. They’re just too inconsistent. If the defense plays decent, the offense seems to fall apart. If the offense is clicking, the defense seems to get gashed. And even if both of them are doing okay, the special teams unit gives up points or great field position on a regular basis already. I really hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t have much confidence we’ll turn it around. And I fear we’ll be 0-3 going into our bye week.
Sadly, my two-cents…

Do I expect them too? No...not really
I was merely saying what I hope they do. Of course if they do that and screw it up then we all look stupid (Which isn’t hard for me to do)

Bleh....
I believe that if you call a certain style of playcalling, that our team has the ability to beat the Cowboys. But the defense has to be aggressive. On one note, I think the injury to Na’il Diggs might be a good thing because it gets Anderson on the field, and we all know how good he was during the preseason. That being said, we need to start blitzing our linebackers on 3rd down in order to get some pressure on Tony Romo. We need to stop with this stupid loose coverage and start actually covering the wideouts like the corners are supposed to do.
Force Tony Romo to beat us through the air, not on the ground. That’s going to give us the best chance of beating the Cowboys. Our team is going to look a heck of a lot better when our offense is on the field, we get our power running game going, and we start playing Foxball instead of football.
I just don’t think John Fox will do it. He’s too stubborn on his own philosophy. If we lose the game, it will be because we’re not providing a good pass rush. That’s it. Period. End of story.
1/2 an hour till kickoff.
