Panthers vs. Cowboys MNF Game Open Thread

Carolina Panthers at Dallas Cowboys, Sep 28, 2009 8:30 PM EDT

Wow, what a match-up we have this week. We play 'Americas' Team the Dallas Cowboys in their brand new spanking stadium nicknamed 'Jerry World' on the seasons biggest stage, Monday Night Football. We've had plenty of commentary leading up to this game so there is little else to discuss. We know how important this game is to the Panthers to avoid falling three games back in the division race. We know the Cowboys are equally stressed to erase last weeks loss to the Giants. We know the Cowboys are heavy favorites to win this game.

What the rest of the world doesn't know if how this Panther team will respond to the adversity. The Panthers are due some breaks and I bet they come tonight and they come big time.

Here's some pre-game reading links if you are looking for some, here and here.

Back in black? The rumor is that the Panthers will be wearing black jerseys tonight but will not be completely black as some other rumors are circulating (ie..black helmet and pants). I'm looking forward to seeing it.

What I want to know is what you are thinking Panthers fans throughout this game. This now an Open Thread!

Go Panthers!

Barber out is big for Dallas.

It makes their running game more one dimensional. Look for Thomas Davis to utilize his speed and have another big game.

Tony Fiametta will be starting for us at FB. He was the best FB in the draft by a mile, and it’s precisely moments like this we carry two FBs into the season. He could be a factor in short yardage situations too, moreso than Hoover is used.

I am beside myself waiting for this game. LETS GOT PANTHERS!

I don't think the Barber hit is all that big...

…Dallas also has Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. Believe me, my brother’s a major Dallas fan and he keeps up with them like nobody’s business. There is no significant drop-off among their three-headed monster.

I stated this earlier in another thread, but in a lot of ways, I think Jones and Choice could burn us worse than Barber. Our defense is having a really hard time wrapping up anyone on first contact. And, given the speed those two guys have (compared to Barber), they can take it to the house if they make just one guy miss.

So, defensively, our front seven are going to have to really be on their game to stop the Dallas rushing attack. I suspect they’ll lean on that heavily, too, given Romo’s recent “issues” at the QB position and the entire league knowing we’re a bit soft at the DT position. If Dallas can generate success in the running game, it takes all the pressure off Romo. And defensively, that doesn’t bode well for us.

Just my two-cents,
—Neil

I agree that there wont be a fall off.

But like I said, I do think it makes them more one dimensional. Jones and Choice are both shifty, speedy backs but I don’t know if they can pick up those short, hard yards that Barber is so good at getting.

Everything you said about using their run to take the pressure off Romo… that’s exactly what we’ll be looking to do with Jake. It should be fun.

LOL!!

We’re still gonna try to use our TO autographed football against the Cowboys.
I know its probably irrelevant now that TO is gone, but whenever we put the ball on the back of our toilet the Cowboys would lose to the Eagles in previous years. Maybe there’s still some anti-Dallas magic left in that ball.

I hear that Jerry Jones disturbed some evil powers when he built that stadium. Building a huge stadium like that in a dreadful economy like this? Bad form! Curses on Cowboys!

Hey guys. I'm a Bears fan, just settling in to root against the Cowboys.

(in other words, tonight, for the Panthers). I’ve even got the local Carolina radio coverage on NFL Field pass so I don’t have to hear any Romo worship or that horribly misplaced phrase, “AMerica’s Team”.

If the Panthers embarrass the cowboys tonight, and I promise to root for Carolina all the way to the playoffs! :)

No, that's just the defensive side of the ball

Jake is a very competent QB when he isn’t asked to do too much. Williams had a 5.8 YPC average, but he only got 11 opportunities. Stewart got three. Jake got four, which means he was sacked three times and ran once. Those were passing plays. So you have 14 rushes, and 37 passing plays called.

That’s nowhere near a winning formula. And you can blame Jake all you want, but he wasn’t exactly put in a position to succeed.

I'm pissed. The coaches screwed up this game.

This has been the most horrible performance by a coaching staff I’ve ever seen in Carolina. The offense has every freaking opportunity to succeed, and they kept the ball away from the best player on the offense. This is the equivalent of giving the ball to David Carr when you have LaDainian Tomlinson waiting in the backfield.

I’m hot. I’m pissed. This is idiotic. We should have beaten the Cowboys. We had them. And instead our coaches smoke a big wad of fail and keep the Panthers from being able to do anything at all.

Yes! Never mind the Panthers are a running team and have the best RB in the league. Never mind we don’t have a D-Line! We’re going to show the entire world that we can win a game by swimming in Lake Stupidity. Don’t give the ball to Williams! Don’t blitz! Do the opposite of what you did in the 1st half! Everything will be fine! The Cowboys will just bend over and let us give them the business.

My god….are they retarded?

I'm just going to log off for now guys.

This is the most irritating thing I’ve seen in my life. Horrible. Absolutely horrible.

Trade freaking Peppers for a 1st/3rd round pick, this season is over.

Nope

Not until after the season, and even then we would have to tag him again AND get him to sign his tender.

I agree, loss goes all around.....

but man, this team has to committ to the run and stay with it for a while (even when its not working) to at least give Williams the reps to try to make something happen and take the pressure off the O-line and Jake. At the very least, even if they can’t break one it’ll set up play action and loosen up the coverage. IMHO terrible night for the OC.

It was so beautiful.

I know Smith quit on the route but I think Jake should have given up on that play immediately.

My biggest problem with Jake is precisely this – he locks on to receivers. Apart from that I do like him as QB.

I am also really pissed at how underused D-Will is.

Well anyway….I just feel sad at the moment. I was not so confident about this game because of our D but I was stunned by how we approached the game offensively.

by pieterzen on Sep 28, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

On that play everyone would have thrown the INT

It was a timing pattern, a quick slant. QB sees that the WR has the angle, zips it, but the WR quits on the play.

Jake played a good enough game, we’ve won a lot with him playing as well as he did yesterday. The problem was not at QB.

Chan Gailey (the Chiefs fired him)

Coach Jags (TB fired him)
The guy the Bills fired.

Bill Cowher, if they decide to overhaul during the bye week?

Promote the QB coach

The offense is installed already, and it doesn’t suck. What sucks is the way we don’t adjust at halftime.

if your gonna make a move....

I agree, thats the best approach at this point in the season.
You can’t go to the nuclear options 3 games into the season.

any ideas on how we can get first round pick back next year?

at this rate 49ers are gonna get a top 10 pick next year

Nice hyperbole

We’re not 0-16, not even close. Especially with 2 games vs Tampa to come.
