Cowboys fan

hey guys, I'm not here to troll but was curios as to how you guys looked at the Cowboys and how you think the game will go Monday? How and who will your guys try to be exploiting and what scares you if anything?

I must warn you not even Cowboys fans know what to expect, one week our D-backs will shut down all pro receivers and the next week get burnt by rookies. The D will get run over one week and shut down Brandon Jacobs  the next. Romo might throw three TD's or three INT's. Our wide receivers might catch 350 yards or 80. Dallas is all over the place!

The constants are, they have been very good on the O-line and the 12 package (two tight ends) can both block and run routs deep. Dallas can run the ball and they are blocking really well right now. Dallas d-line is getting pressure on QB's but are not getting sacks, they beat Leftwich to death and just missed Eli on two or three potential sacks.

Dallas is coming off a very emotional game and it will be hard to get up again, I worry the cowboys may not show up for this one.

We don’t know what to expect either… Should make for a boring game!

by tarheelfan on Sep 23, 2009 9:38 AM EDT reply actions

yes I agree with that article

the only thing it fails to mention is the beating Leftwich took, Dallas beat on him for 30 minutes. And Spencer just missed Eli twice, Spencer is getting pressure hes just not closing the deal. The real problem is the corners could not cover and Steve Smith should school Newman, but Newman has done a great job against Smith in the past.

I don’t know

My pregame analysis

Offensively Dallas and Carolina are extremely similar teams, both have boom or bust QBs, a good stable of running backs, solid offensive line and compatent but not outstanding recieving corps. I break offense down like this:

Quarterback: Dallas
Running Backs: Carolina
Wide Recievers/Tight Ends: Edge to Dallas
Offensive line: Edge to Carolina

Defensively Dallas are rushing well and Carolina’s O-line hasn’t faired too well against 3-4 defences. However, the last time we saw a 3-4 was in the preseason, and since then out O-line seems to be gelling better.

On the other side of the ball, back to back big games from TE’s (Celek and Gonzalez) have shown that we are weak against big bodied, pass catching TEs… Witten scares me in this regard and could have an enormous day. Our secondary, like Dallas’ seems to be a questionable area right now until we can get our leader back (Chris Harris) will remain the achilles heel of the defense. If we can get pressure on Romo quickly and force some bad throws early then I like our chances, like Jake when Tony is pressured early he continues to have a bad day, when he gets early protection and time he’ll pick defenses apart.

Ultimately, this game is going to be won or lost by the run on both sides of the ball. If Marion Barber can play I expect both teams to be running the ball alot to keep our respective QBs from having to make too many plays.

Keys to Carolina victory:
- Strong play from offensive line
- Stong rushing attack
- Pressure from defensive line
- Plays being made in the secondary

Keys to Dallas victory:
- Mistake free game from Romo
- Getting Witten involved early and often
- Exotic blitz packages to confuse Carolina’s O-line.

That pretty much sums it up.

Just add to Dallas’ keys to victory: “Get into the lead early.”

I’ve always said Dallas is a hot and cold team. This is one of those games that could easily go either way.

by Scrantsj on Sep 23, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Dallas has always been a slow starter

They never score on the first drive and they always score on the drive before half or to start the second half.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I won't disagree with you...

My dad and brother-in-law are life-long Cowboys fans, so I have a better perspective of this game than most Panthers fans. Romo is really the key to the Cowboys game (Just like Jake usually is for the Panthers). If he is on (i.e. not making bone-headed plays), then the Cowboys are a very tough team to beat. If he is off, you begin to wonder when you moved to Detroit. There are a lot of scary weapons on the Dallas offense, so this could be a blowout. But it does depends on the QB play.

by Scrantsj on Sep 23, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

well, i want go that far

Romo had three picks and the Giants had to kick a FG with no time left to win. Detroit would have lost by 30. Plus We scored 31 against the Giants with three turnovers and no defensive or special teams points, all the points came off offensive plays.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't want to sound like a homer but

Dallas pass protection is very good, I think they will negate any pass rush.

all the other keys to Carolina’s victory is very possible.

Dallas Victory conditions well,
Romo after a stinker always has come back and had great games.
Witten is always involved and moreso this year, they are lining him and Bennett up as wide outs, very confusing how do you cover them both?
After thouroughly screwing up the blitzes this week against the Giants I expect Dallas to run more Zone, although Jenkins is a better man corner.

But I think your mostly accurate.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I would like to add

more zone does not mean better defense, noooooo, not even. Dallas will be giving up the 8 yard pass all day.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

"Negate any pass rush"

that won’t even matter, because we’ll be negating it for you.

It may be a close game, but...

the oddsmakers don’t think so! Dallas is a 9 1/2 point fav!

Only thing I see as in our favor (for our soft defense) is that Romo is not traditionally a quick releaser of the ball — those are the QB’s who do the most damage against us — maybe, just maybe, our DL will do a gut check, as the OL did after Philly, and generate a pass rush. But they surely haven’t shown any sign yet that they can.

by bigdavis on Sep 23, 2009 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

Quick release?

Tony has the quickest release since Dan Marino?

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Let me rephrase that...

His motion’s quick enough — I meant he’s prone to survey the field more than the 2-3 seconds that other QB’s hurt us by doing.

by bigdavis on Sep 24, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

9 1/2

that is crazy, We cant stop anyone from scoring. We can score but I believe Steve Smith gets 14 by himself.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

That is the first spread I heard and it does seem a bit high. I would expect Dallas to be favored but more in the 5-6 point range (like our last week @ Atlanta),

by R-F on Sep 24, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

but...

Romo has the feet to keep the play alive. That might make up for his slower release.

Musiccitynorm,

I’m sitting here at work doing some mid-morning ‘rosterbation’ with some co-workers and since I have a real life Cowboys fan in my midst I have kind of a crazy question.

(Note to all Panther fans: I am not suggesting this is going to happen, will happen or is a move I would personally endorse)

So, how high are you on Stephen McGee? He was definately a QB I had on my radar for the Panthers and a kid who got a raw deal due to injury his senior season. When the Cowboys took him in the 4th round I thought “Good pick, he’ll be nice insurance”. How did he play in the preseason? Could he run the offense?

So, say Tony Romo has another 3 INT game, and Julius Peppers tears it up with multiple sacks, a FF and more… do you think Jerry Jones would ever pull the plug on Romo and trade him for Peppers?

To be honest, the thought of Demarcus Ware and a re-energized Peppers being your OLBs in the 3-4 would scare the league to death.

by James The Aussie on Sep 23, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

McGee is a project

Its my understanding he is only learning the short game in the passing playbook. Garrett will not allow him to throw deep but that is year one for him to learn. He will not start this year it is a three year plan.

You guys got Moore whom Dallas was very high on.

Spencer is actually a good player, he is quick and strong against the run, see for youself this week, he is learning and when he gets it hes going to be really good, that might be this year but no later than next year. Dallas does not need Peppers.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

ST

How good are the ’Boys ST? I want to know what to expect from our return men also how good is Felix Jones on returns I heard he tore his ACL last year?

by chinchillas sword on Sep 23, 2009 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

Good Question that I would like answered in return about Carolina please.

Jones is fine, he is a threat to take it to the house at any moment on kickoff returns, but our punt return is ridiculously bad. Its no threat at all, Patrick Crayton is no threat. Jones does not return punts.

We have a kicker named Buehler who is consistently kicking kickoffs into the end zone and even out of the end zone. Folk the field goal kicker is money he kicked one from 49 that hit the top third of the net.

Matt McBriar is a good punter too but gives guys a chance to return with 65 yard punts.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait, so you carry two kickers and a punter too?

Our special teams have been horrible as of late. They can’t make a tackle and are allowing drives to start on a short field. Jones should fair very well if it isn’t addressed soon.

We have Mike Goodson as our primary kick returner. He is lightning in a bottle provided he gets a decent block, which we have yet to see. He definately has ‘home run’ potential though.

Punt returning is being handled by rookie CB Captain Munnerlyn. He’s playing it safe more often than not and taking alot of fair catches. Not really a threat.

John Kasay (FG kicker) is as accurate as the day is long. He’s not a huge threat over 50 yards due to age, but he’ll almost always nail anything shorter. In a dome with no wind he’s money.

Jason Baker (P) is leading the league in net yards per punt. He has a long windup however (one punt got blocked last week) but if he gets a second he can boom it.

Rhys Lloyd (KOS) lead the league in touchbacks last season. He will regularily boom kickoffs into the endzone. He hasn’t been as automatic this season as he was last year, but he will still ensure that Jone has a nice long run to look at should he choose to return it.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James The Aussie on Sep 23, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Though Munnerlyn is just playing it safe since he doesn’t want to lose that job. But when he does take it back he’s like goodson on KOs I think it was against the dolphins in preseason that he almost had a PR TD just he stepped outside. :(

by chinchillas sword on Sep 23, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Punt returns.....Miles Austin.....

I remember Austin returning punts (including one for a TD in the playoff game) 2 seasons ago. Do they ever still use him on punt returns? I like Austin alot since he hails from my alma matter; Div. 1AA Monmouth University.

by paydirt16 on Sep 23, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Austin only does kickoff returns

He’s a good kick returner, Jones is better but they both do it.

Underrated reciever though, he’s pretty good.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 24, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Barber

Is he gonna play or will he be out for the game he could be the X factor.

by chinchillas sword on Sep 23, 2009 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

I'm not sure.

Choice averaged over 5 yards a carry against Baltimore, pittsburg, and New york last year, hes shifty and quick and has good vision. Then we have Jones who is just awesome. Dallas has three really good running backs and Jones is the best of them all.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

also Bennett our 2nd tight end twittered Barber was ok and would play

but the reports out of Dallas are they are going to hold him out this game to be safe, they did bring him back from a toe injury to soon last year and he never recovered.

I've got to tell you guys you are really good fans

Barber practiced today,

I can’t believe it but it looks like he is going to play.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 23, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

He will not be effective !!

Simply will only play maybe 10-20 snaps in the game !! At most !

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Sep 23, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

he shares carries with Jones, and Choice anyway, so

20 touches is about the most hell see anyway, he had 19 against the Giants.

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 24, 2009 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Roughly 60-40 to DeAngelo Williams

Williams will have anywhere from 15-20 carries
Stewart will have anywhere from 10-15 carries

i think this could be a game that we come out and play very well

last season when we played in the national spotlight (with the exception of the ARI game) we played very well, even in the giants game we should have won that game

by carolinabrave89 on Sep 23, 2009 6:00 PM EDT reply actions

Williams and Stewart

Split carries prety evenly. D-Will might get 5 more or so
