MNF Open Thread: Colts vs. Dolphins
So if you are like me Panther fans you are watching MNF and admiring the Dolphins offense. Not only is it effective but it is fun to watch too. It should not be lost on you either that Dan Henning is the man behind that offense. The irony, the irony.
I'm needing Ronnie Brown to kick ass but 30 points is asking a lot!
What's on your minds Panther fans? Better late than never....
This is now an Open Thread!

Ronnie Brown 127 yds 2 TD's
Very nice but not good enough to pick up the rest of my lame line-up

Dolphins Time of Pession over Colts: 41 minutes to 15!!
Now that is ball control.

Anybody notice Joey Porter's blitz/sack from way wide ("9") of the line?
Why couldn’t we bring Thomas Davis, with his speed. from the same position?
Exactly...the best defenses can bring the pressure
We have the speed to get it done

Because we don't use a 3-4?
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

(cont...)
If we did that in our defense, there’d be liabilities in coverage.

So you're in a hurry to make that worse?
You’d like to make our soft zone coverage even softer??? I shudder at the thought.

I'm not saying that...
but there appears to be a correlation. Sure a 4-3 can bring pressure, Giants, Bears, Eagles as examples this season.

Not as a staple formation...
…but with the element of surprise, it could work.
Porter came in untouched to sack Manning, because he got there unblocked before 2 seconds had passed. They didn’t expect him — they didn’t pick him up.
What we’re doing now, with our “defense/coverage” (?) ain’t working so good — why not throw in a wildcard once in a blue moon?
With no pressure on the QB from our front 4, and soft zone coverage, we can’t expect to stop ANY QB on our schedule from picking us apart. A radical change is called for — blitzes from anywhere, and tight bump coverage — in the proper situations, mind you, not every down, would at least keep OC’s guessing, whereas now they KNOW where we’ll be on every down.
Thomas Davis should be the guy applying the pressure
or the SS.

In a Meeks defense
it’s the strong safety. In Indy he had Bob Sanders. Chris Harris isn’t Bob Sanders, and Quentin Teal shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence.
Are we spelling that right?
Shouldn’t it be MEEK defense?
In 2006 when the Colts won the Superbowl:
Bob Sanders wasn’t even being used as the SS, he was a dime back.
Just a fun fact.

Not quite.
He started the game and played at FS.

According to NFL.com for the 2006 season
SS Antoine Bethea
FS Marlin Jackson
CB Jason David
CB Nick Harper
DB Kelvin Hayden
DB Bob Sanders
Bob Sanders was injured for the majority of 2006 and they brought him back slowly as a DB until he could function fully, though he did start at safety in the Superbowl.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
According to the Super Bowl box score, he was a starter.
That would imply he was being used as more than a dime back “when the Colts won the Superbowl.”

You're right, I should have qualified
I mean the entire 2006 season, not the Superbowl game itself. Sanders was able to play the last 4 games of the regular season (dime back) and into the playoffs (FS), but for the entire season he wasn’t able to be used and they still put up solid defensive numbers.

Sort of...
Their run defense was terrible until his return. When he got healthy, they were great in the playoffs.

So far that would seem the better pick
Did he start tonight or just play the nickle?

He has started both of their games thus far.

Thats impressive...
I doubt Panther fans will forget this one if Martin doesn’t pan out

That's always the problem when you look at ready-to-contribute vs. upside.
The ready-to-contribute guy might just be better immediately than the upside guy ever is.

A lot of people
wished we had drafted Derrick Johnson instead of Thomas Davis, and after year one it looked like they were right. Even in year two there were some questions. Now though, I think Davis is the clear choice.
Give it time.
He is?
He’s not the blitzer Johnson is, he’s not the cover guy Johnson is. Don’t let KC’s dumb decision to move to a 3-4 fool you; Johnson is the better overall player and has been for the majority of the two players’ rookie contracts.

I think so
In 61 games Johnson has had 353 tackles and 13 sacks. In 64 Davis has had 355 and 9.5 sacks. Considering that Davis didn’t see the field a lot his rookie year, it looks like he’s been getting better while Johnson’s been standing still. Davis started matching his numbers in his second year, and since he’s moved to WLB he’s taking off.
And you’re right, that 3-4 D isn’t where he needs to be.
Butkus makes a good point in the post-game analysis
Though the Dolphins killed them in time of possession the Dolphins have zero big play ability. And they lost…So we see demonstrated right in front of us the good and bad of a Dan Henning offense
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Actually they could have a big play ability
If Ted Ginn had Steve Smith’s hands!

Butkus?...lol
actually it was Matt Millen. Great player but as a GM?…not so much, but he still has a nice gig

Sorry everyone
I started this thing an hour ago but now I gotta crash…way too tired.
