Panthers vs. Falcons Game Day Open Thread
Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons, Sep 20, 2009 1:00 PM EDT
Yes its Falcons week Panther fans. Our beloved Panthers travel to the roost in Atlanta for another taste of fresh bird and we know how much cats like bird!
The horrors of week one are but a distant memory as we know our Panthers will come out fighting. Consider the following factors the Panthers have in their favor:
- A superior running game led by Double Trouble
- A rejuvenated PB DE in Julius Peppers will look to abuse LT Sam 'Quiche' Baker
- Long time Falcon tormentor Steve Smith is sure to be juiced
- The Falcons are still trying to find the right combo in the secondary
There is plenty of pre-game reading material on the Falcons over at The Falcoholic if you care.
This is now an Open Thread!

So Leonard is starting I guess?
And Moore is the only backup? That’s a bit surprising.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Feeley is not inactive
He’s the emergency 3rd
Same here....
and the Saints are on the march too.
GO PANTHERS!!!!
GOOD LUCK JAKE!!!!!
HANG TOUGH BROTHER!!!!!
A toss?
Granted its the first play… but thats not a typical John Fox running play
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
I have to say
These alternate Falcon uniforms are pretty swell
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
pretty quick throws
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Jake is looking very crisp...
granted, it’s only three throws. But those are the tightest spirals I’ve seen from Jake in a long time.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
looks like he's adjusted his plana bit

For those unable to watch:
Jake is current 4/4 including two 20+ yard passes to Smith and Moose
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
was that a ansy timeout call?
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
What I want to see
This is all great, but I expect a score on the first drive. It’s the ones that reflect adjustments that worry me.
Short plays and long drives
Is a great way to keep Ryan from making plays
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Good read on the broken play from Jake...
DeAngelo couldn’t make a play though. FG Panthers

I'm ok with that
Play it safe. As long as Jake isn’t trying to be Superman. 3 points is better than a pick

Is Baker our leading tackler on special teams?
cmon!

We need to have an extra DB in
If we don’t and leave an LB on Gonzalez its going to be a big day for him

To me, this drive tells the story of our game
Last week we couldn’t adjust to the changes the Eagles made. If we can get points again I’ll feel a lot better about the season.
Who wants to bet...
Munnerlyn was told, “No matter what, catch the ball. Just call a fair catch, but DON’T bobble it.”
Good strategy against Koenen anyway :)
Two personnal fouls now
bad blood is brewing!
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
If he didn't throw high
It would have been picked. I say good play Jake
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
That's not always good
He outkicks the coverage too much. Better to have it go five yards higher and five yards shorter if the coverage gets there than overkick it and set up a return.
They aren't lying when they say they believe in Jake
To give him those throws in the endzone!
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
We can’t keep letting a guard have free reign to get past the line and block Beason.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
That's going to happen
unless Leonard is told to play as a true NT. Both tackles are playing one-gap.
Yep, but when our primary playmaker cant make plays it can become a problem.

They accidentally moved the ball to the ATL goal line, for some reason
so the gain was a loss

Way more than that
At least 17 to the Eagles alone. When you give the other team the ball in scoring position, its on the Special Teams and not the Defense
The O-Line's showing up today
that can’t hurt

And Jake is getting a little sloppy. Keep running!!!

adjustments
it seems we made three adjustments from last week, and i like them…quicker throws, better run blocking, and more intensity on defense. i like it. i don’t expect jake to do anything great, but the throws he’s made so far have looked good, and if he keeps it up, i think we’ll win by 17 pts.
Don't forget the O-Line
They’re opening holes and protecting Jake today. Makes everyone else look better. :)
jake
you know jake appreciates that. quick drops and time to throw.

terrible tackling again!
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
He's not getting held... he's getting shut down.
There’s a difference
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Saying he's being 'held' on every play is obscene. It's like saying every INT by Jake last week was because of pass interference.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
That's BS, every player gets "held" that way
And they deal with it. That’s what separates the stars from the rest.
For instance, did you see Gross’s takedown of Abraham? Handful of jersey, wasn’t called.
No doubt
It’s taking the Falcons 10+ plays for a drive and we can get it done in 8

big runs. That’s a good way to win a football game.
It's very reassuring to see we got our offense back.
Nice run up the gut from Stewart there, tackles bouncing off him all over the place.

Oh man
Moose got his legs taken out from under him before the ball got there. If that hadn’t been tipped…

it seems more & more other teams kickers are putting it in the end zone so why are we keeping lloyd

Nobody expected him to be great against the run.
It’s gonna take a couples of years and 15 pounds before he’s great in the run game.

Also, ATL's offense is excellent
It’s a little of both.
Offense is dynamic... defense is wet paper
the million dollar man is a no-show and Gonzalez is having his way.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
They still haven't figured out how to stop the run
that bodes well for the 2nd half.
Muuuch better
We are still in a good position to run the ball, so I’m not too worried.
Why not?
He’s nailed a 70 yarder in practice!
He just has zero accuracy

Good offensively and bad defensively is better than
abysmal offensive and invisible defensive.
Offense much improved
Defense the same, and unfortunately special teams worse
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
21 first half points surrendered
We’re not winning many this season if our defense doesn’t get a LOT better. What’s worse is we’re winning the time of possession battle.
I like this half...
Falcons are one of the best teams in the NFL… we just need to make defensive adjustments
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
I don't feel too bad about this
considering Tennessee gave up 24. Happens to everybody.
Matt Sanchez TD
Pats – Jets tied up, awaiting the PAT
I love it whe nthe Pats lose. Here’s hoping.
my only real complaint...
Is special teams. there have been few blown assignments and bonehead plays but the ST is the only thing that is putting us in bad positin.
Last year we had great starting field position from a defensive standpoint
This year they’re starting with short fields way too often.
agreed
but the D still needs to improve some of their coverage. but it would help if the Falcons didn’t start at the 40+
Falcons get the ball first in the second half
If we can’t keep them out of the end zone, it’s going to be all but over.
jake vs the defense
jake had a horrible playoff game and played horrible last week. that’s two games. the defense has played poorly for about 11 straight games now. so why can’t dan connor get some pt? he knows how to tackle.

What a great game so far....
CAR came to play….Atl is really taking CAR’s best shot today….driving back with :50 on the clock instead of going into the locker room. I’m loving this….
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.
Elayne Boosler
IMHO we need a big play from ST or the D....
and keep the ball control going on the offensive side and not try to get it all back in a hurry.
Not too bad thus far, playing a playoff team on the road.

Only if he had control before the twist
If he didn’t, then he never established control and made a “football move” before losing it.

I got it. Charles Davis kept saying it should be an incomplete pass. I have no idea what he was talking about.

Blame the TV crew
They kept showing the backside of the play, and him crossing the goal line. It was the opposite view of what was being challenged.

If the D can’t step up and keep them on their side of the 50, it’s over.
Our D has played soft all game. They have to step up here. no more easy completions and stuff the run.

I've had a theory for several years now
That is is unlikely for both my alma mater (UNC) and the Panthers to win a football game in the same weekend. Haven’t ever really looked at the statistics on this, but ever since I’d consoled myself with at least 1 out of 2 I’ve had a lot less worry.

452 total yards of offense
That, to me, says we can win some games this season if the D and ST pick it up just a liiiittle bit.
We have alot to hold our heads high about.
Special teams and by extension defense cost us the game.
The offense was really solid. Jake is back, the rushing is definately there. We just need to put it all together.
I’ll have a better analysis after I watch the tape…. but we kept the game close despite playing on a short field all game.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
I'm with you James...
its such a long season and you can count on some unforseen surprises taking place between week 2 and week 16 of the season. As a side note, I watched most of the Eagles-Saints game and I gotta say its a damn shame the Panthers had the Eagles for the first game of the season. The Eagles were the mess we saw in the preseason and now that their newfangled blitz scheme is on tape it’s not gonna catch anyone by surprise. With that said the Saints looked pretty damn good, almost as good as the Eagles last week…. and ya see where that went within one week. Hopefully Jake got the boogeyman out of his head and we can get keep tightening things up and pull the upset in Dallas. Hang in there folks!
we just needed few stops..
and that fumble by deangelo killed us as well
How long will it take NO and ATL to both lose 2 games?

RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
No blame at all
He was in 4th and 10 and running out of time, 90% of the quarterbacks in the league would turn it over on that play. Throwing the INT actually made a +10 yard difference to us in field position.
We have a LOT to worry about
Some say that there is a lot of bright spots in the game, but I saw many too many negatives…
The most significant problem was that we lost the battle of the trenches plain and simple. We could not get pressure on Ryan nor stop Turner the Burner…additionally our O-line was soo mediocre…not to mention that Hoover looked lost blocking and Dante is a pushover…
Our Special Team play has sucked… we can’t cover KO’s or punts at all nor can we get any kind of contributing runback!
I have no problem with Jake, he played fine and all, but we have got to find some one else to throw to besides Smitty and tha Moose…
Our defense can’t stop anything… sucks in coverage (esp against bigger TE’s like Tony G) and is having a lot of trouble stopping the run!!
And finally the main concern here is that we are just NOT as dominating as we were last year, including our running game…Atlanta controlled the ball and the game the entire game throughout…bottom line is that Atlanta outplayed us and made us look a lot less competitive than last year!
Gonzalez
Go back to one of my first posts in this thread… 1st quarter. I wrote “We can’t keep an LB covering Gonzalez all day, otherwise he’s going to have a big game” guess what happened?
As for the trenches… I’m disgusted with Julius Peppers play today.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Just wait til we play the Saints
Breez might put up 60+ on our secondary.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Leonard
Has anything been said about Leonard’s condition
I hate losing just as much as the next guy, especially starting our season out 0-2. However, the panthers made huge strides today. This week’s team and last week’s team are two completely different groups.
Smash and Dash looked great today, lets face it we played a really good football team with an excellent QB and solid D-line. The Falcons are good this year and are gonna be very competitive in our division this season.
I don't think us or Atlanta is going to be able to hang with New Orleans
They almost put up 50 points on Philly! I think they win the division hands down, and will probably have one of the best records in the league.
We will need a 6+ game winning streak here to be able to get back into things. And with our schedule I don’t think it’s possible.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
+1
New Orleans is getting stops. That’s what is making them scary. Opponents who were putting up 40 on them last year can only get 20 or 30.
That offense is obscene right now. Brees has over 700 yards, 9 TD and 2 INT and it’s week 2
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

New Orleans looked great today.....
but I do want to qualify it by adding that this did not look like the same Eagle defense of week #1. That bltzing scheme was a brand new look never seen before when they hit the Panthers with it. The Saints picked the Eagle D apart after having a week of seeing it on film.
I’m with you, that we have a tough road to sow, but its only week #2 and you never know at this point where the ebb & flow of the NFL will end up at week #16.
Heres to hoping for the best, starting with a big upset win in the big D.
