Panthers vs. Falcons Game Day Open Thread

Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons, Sep 20, 2009 1:00 PM EDT

Yes its Falcons week Panther fans. Our beloved Panthers travel to the roost in Atlanta for another taste of fresh bird and we know how much cats like bird!

The horrors of week one are but a distant memory as we know our Panthers will come out fighting. Consider the following factors the Panthers have in their favor:

  • A superior running game led by Double Trouble
  • A rejuvenated PB DE in Julius Peppers will look to abuse LT Sam 'Quiche' Baker
  • Long time Falcon tormentor Steve Smith is sure to be juiced
  • The Falcons are still trying to find the right combo in the secondary

There is plenty of pre-game reading material on the Falcons over at The Falcoholic if you care.

This is now an Open Thread!

452 total yards of offense

That, to me, says we can win some games this season if the D and ST pick it up just a liiiittle bit.

by MrEd12345 on Sep 20, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

We have alot to hold our heads high about.

Special teams and by extension defense cost us the game.

The offense was really solid. Jake is back, the rushing is definately there. We just need to put it all together.

I’ll have a better analysis after I watch the tape…. but we kept the game close despite playing on a short field all game.

I'm with you James...

its such a long season and you can count on some unforseen surprises taking place between week 2 and week 16 of the season. As a side note, I watched most of the Eagles-Saints game and I gotta say its a damn shame the Panthers had the Eagles for the first game of the season. The Eagles were the mess we saw in the preseason and now that their newfangled blitz scheme is on tape it’s not gonna catch anyone by surprise. With that said the Saints looked pretty damn good, almost as good as the Eagles last week…. and ya see where that went within one week. Hopefully Jake got the boogeyman out of his head and we can get keep tightening things up and pull the upset in Dallas. Hang in there folks!

No blame at all

He was in 4th and 10 and running out of time, 90% of the quarterbacks in the league would turn it over on that play. Throwing the INT actually made a +10 yard difference to us in field position.

by Cyberjag on Sep 20, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

We have a LOT to worry about

Some say that there is a lot of bright spots in the game, but I saw many too many negatives…

The most significant problem was that we lost the battle of the trenches plain and simple. We could not get pressure on Ryan nor stop Turner the Burner…additionally our O-line was soo mediocre…not to mention that Hoover looked lost blocking and Dante is a pushover…

Our Special Team play has sucked… we can’t cover KO’s or punts at all nor can we get any kind of contributing runback!

I have no problem with Jake, he played fine and all, but we have got to find some one else to throw to besides Smitty and tha Moose…

Our defense can’t stop anything… sucks in coverage (esp against bigger TE’s like Tony G) and is having a lot of trouble stopping the run!!

And finally the main concern here is that we are just NOT as dominating as we were last year, including our running game…Atlanta controlled the ball and the game the entire game throughout…bottom line is that Atlanta outplayed us and made us look a lot less competitive than last year!

I hate losing just as much as the next guy, especially starting our season out 0-2. However, the panthers made huge strides today. This week’s team and last week’s team are two completely different groups.
Smash and Dash looked great today, lets face it we played a really good football team with an excellent QB and solid D-line. The Falcons are good this year and are gonna be very competitive in our division this season.

by tommyboy6286 on Sep 20, 2009 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think us or Atlanta is going to be able to hang with New Orleans

They almost put up 50 points on Philly! I think they win the division hands down, and will probably have one of the best records in the league.

We will need a 6+ game winning streak here to be able to get back into things. And with our schedule I don’t think it’s possible.

New Orleans is getting stops. That’s what is making them scary. Opponents who were putting up 40 on them last year can only get 20 or 30.

That offense is obscene right now. Brees has over 700 yards, 9 TD and 2 INT and it’s week 2

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Sep 20, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

New Orleans looked great today.....

but I do want to qualify it by adding that this did not look like the same Eagle defense of week #1. That bltzing scheme was a brand new look never seen before when they hit the Panthers with it. The Saints picked the Eagle D apart after having a week of seeing it on film.
I’m with you, that we have a tough road to sow, but its only week #2 and you never know at this point where the ebb & flow of the NFL will end up at week #16.
Heres to hoping for the best, starting with a big upset win in the big D.
