Panthers Munnerlyn Earns #3 CB Slot

Munnerlyn_medium

If you were like me and thought the only reason CB Captain Munnerlyn was active for the Eagles game instead of CJ Wilson because of the injury to Chris Harris you might be wrong. It does help that Munnerlyn returns punts but the Panthers have other players than can do that work. My thinking was that since Harris was out they had to leave S Sherrod Martin active as the 3rd safety meaning a choice between Wilson and Munnerlyn and since Wilson was #3 CB you might think he would get the call.

HC John Fox clears that up:

"He's a good, young player," coach John Fox said. "We saw him improve, and we thought he was our third-best guy going into that game. He earned it. We don't just make decisions; they actually make the decisions for us."

So Munnerlyn is now the #3 CB playing when the nickel package is needed. The result was significant playing time against the Eagles.

Star-divide

They had me prepared for it, and I was kind of settled down going in," Munnerlyn said. "I felt kind of comfortable, and I went out and played some football. My first game I felt like I played pretty good. I graded out pretty good.

"I couldn't sleep the night before. I was like ‘Man, first NFL game.' I ended up playing like 45 plays on defense. Being a rookie, I felt like that was great."

I thought he played well though he only registered a single tackle in the game book. Munnerlyn is a good tackler who is always quick to come up in run support. I think we have another 7th round gem Panther fans. What do you guys think?

Got this in an email and thought I would share
NO NEED TO PANIC: At the end of Week 2, no more than 11 teams will be able to claim a perfect 2-0 record, leaving at least 21 clubs at 1-1 or 0-2.

Since realignment in 2002, 48 of the 84 playoff teams (57.1 percent) began the year at either 1-1 or 0-2. Four of the past eight Super Bowl champions began their seasons with a 1-1 or 0-2 record.

I like Munnerlyn

Obviously so do the coaching staff. He has a high motor and wants to do whatever it takes to make a difference. We need more players like that in the defense, but especially in the secondary. Yes, he’s only the nickel now, but I think they have big plans for him.

His speed and reliability as a tackler are probably the primary reason he got this opportunity. If he can fly to the ball in run support he’ll make a big difference. We haven’t had a truly reliable nickel back since Ricky Manning Jr. left, and hopefully Munnerlyn can be that guy… plus his name is easy to make nicknames out his name!

Me too

I wonder if his height will hurt him in coverage. But he made some very athletic tackles in the preseason. As he calms down and loosens up, I think we’ll see him making big plays.

No doubt this game is winable

And no doubt Jake “can” have a bounce back game. I think it all hinges on whether or not ATL brings the house and gets him rattled again. I don’t know why they wouldn’t. But I have my fingers crossed that they think they are good enough to beat us without doing anything special.

Fantastic article... funny, engaging and true.

Only thing it did was underestimate just how fairweather our fanbase can be. If Jake strolls back into BoA week five with three games of multiple TDs and less INTs they’ll cheer him like week one never happened.

Those observations about Smitty are hilarious.

This guy is no where near a better ballhawk that CJ Wilson is…but its typical humans make mistakes. In HS cj was Defensive MVP of a district that had 15 D1 prosepects and 6 All-State players. He was one of the best CB’s in college. Now he is one of the best on the team but as in the past the Coaches don’t believe it but God will open the door for him as he always has…

High school?

That’s how far back we need to go on CJ Wilson? In football years that’s an eternity.

As for:

He was one of the best CB’s in college

You do realize he was the 27th CB taken in the 2007 draft… right? No doubt there can be gems, but saying he was one of the best in college football is a serious stretch.

This came down to a competition for a position by two 7th rounders. Hopefully Wilson can contibute on special teams and in the Dime… but I highly doubt with the Panthers staff’s ability to evaluate defensive talent that they’re magically dropping the ball on this kid.

Captian Oh Captian

Being a gamecock fan i knew exactly what we were getting in this guy, he definitely has more to offer/come. as far as going up against taller receivers he didn’t really have much of a problem in college with it. Boy has some hops.
