Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

"You can’t let a negative thought or what not creep into your mind, like, `Oh gosh, something bad’s going to happen.’ If you think that, something will happen. … That’s just the game. The game’s a roller coaster, up and down. If you do something good, hey, alright, got to move on.

"To say I did that great on Sunday, probably not. I probably let a couple of things hang with me, and that kind of wasn’t me. … I kind of let it get to me a little bit, and that was something that was very different for me."

"You can’t worry about making a mistake. You’ve just got to go out and play. That’s something I’ve always been able to do, and I didn’t do it well on Sunday. How do you fix it? Well, it will be fixed, I promise you. It will be fixed. I’ll be back to me."

-Jake Delhomme

You heard it here guys. Jake Delhomme has made a vow to fix these problems by the Falcons game. This may just be the turning point to our season.

Yeah

That is exactly what I expect the quarterback to say. IMO it isn’t fair to place all the blame on him for Sunday but that is of course what is going to happen. He’s never been one to ignore blame or dish out fault to his teammates. It’s on him (fair or not) and he knows it.

Jake has faced alot of adversity in his time here so I assume he’s used to it. No amount of fans could put as much pressure on him as he puts on himself. It’s probably a little tougher because we’re nearing a line where if he doesn’t improve soon it could mean a big change…..but Delhomme has bounced back before and I still believe he and this team can have a successful season.

jake has never bounced back from this

jake has never bounced back from this situation. he had the worst game of his life last year in the playoffs, and he followed that up with an even worse game where he got benched. it hasn’t happened to him before, so this is new. what is also new is that he recognizes his arm isn’t doing what he wants it to do. he knows when a receiver is open and how the play is developing, but he can’t get rid of the ball in time, or the ball doesn’t do what he wants when he throws it…it goes too high, it gets their late, it doesn’t get there fast enough.

nothing he says means anything until he proves it on the field. that’s what he should be saying, that he has nothing to say, and he’ll be ready to play.

I have to respectfully disagree

You are right in that it doesn’t mean anything (what he says) until he proves it.

But what he was talking about was positive visualization, and how he realized after the game that he wasn’t following that necessary principal for any athlete. He’s saying he was trying to guide the ball, instead of just letting it go. Similar to golf, if a QB starts thinking about the trouble out there (on the course, on the field), stops attacking, and gets defensive with his release (of the clubhead, of the ball), he hits/throws it right where it shouldn’t be.

When “negative thoughts or what not creep into your mind,” you’re pretty much cooked until you realize what you’re doing, and replace those thoughts with positive affirmations of success. Ask any sports psychologist.

Unlike your view that it shows he’s done, I take what he said as a good sign, that he knows what he did wrong. He’s blaming the underthrows, the late releases, the hesitations to fire it before the rush gets there, on a lack of mental confidence. And the fact that he does realize that shows me he’ll be out there firing Sunday, and let it happen.

So he admits something is wrong mentally

That is my concern… That unlike his other poor performances where he was tough mentally and bounced back, he is now letting it linger in his head. Of course he is going to say it will be fixed, but you can’t fix your head.

You can fix your head

Going back to the golf parallel again, I believe it was Bob Rotella who said a golfer should have one last positive thought in his mind, just before he takes the club back — “trust your trained swing.”

If an athlete couldn’t fix his head, there’d be no career for sports psychologists, would there?

by bigdavis on Sep 17, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Take any sport out there – and if you overthink it, you’re going to make more mistakes than just normal. I can’t use the golf reference because, I have never played but I do play a massive amount of discgolf. If you overthink the throw…or put too much emphasis on NOT hitting an obstacle with the disc – then 9 out of 10 times, you’re going to hit it.

Bigdavis’ comment about “trust your trained swing” is precisely how you fix mental errors. Same with golf…discgolf…and football – just let the natural mechanics of the action take over, limiting how much brain interference you allow.

Now, obviously, the QB has to think a great deal BEFORE the throw – but I think Jake was having issues right as he threw the passes. We’ll see though – I’d very much like him to calm down, get ready for ATL, and have a better showing.

Jake is a class act.

He always takes responsibility for his actions — but never credit when things go well.

Got to wish him well in recovering from the last game. I think he’ll do it, with the full support of his teammates, who see him as a stand-up guy they want to win for.

i admired jakes leadership after the arizona game

there was a press conference on tv right after that and all he kept saying was it was all his fault

Sure Jake, you can fix it. lol. I dont expect you to say anything less. The bigger problem is how long can it stay fixed. We know your inconsistancy troubles so, yippee, you fix it for one game, then the following what will we expect?? “Bad Jake”?? lol.
