Ex coaches Martz, Mora and Mooch still believe in Jake

Coaches Martz, Mora and Mooch discuss QB Jake Delhomme's 4 INT game against the Eagles...

http://www.nfl.com/videos/carolina-panthers/09000d5d812a01a4/Trouble-with-Delhomme

Star-divide

I watched this assuming that if Fox was listening, they would give him 101 reasons why Jake is NOT the answer.  Surprising enough they all seem to think that Jake should still be the Panther's guy.  As bitter as I am, it was refreshing to hear their spin on it.

What I took away from it was that after being out of "real game" action for quite some time, the Panthers were just overwhelmed by the speed of Philly's defense... which has been very good for quite some time now.  We shouldn't assume every defense we play, we'll be able to match that same intensity.  The first thing to focus on should be restoring Jake's confidence.  No more 7 step drops.  Get him consistently completing some short passes, before taking any shots down field.  Get the ball out quick to our vast repertoire of play makers, and let them do the dirty work.

As bitter as I am about Jake, this definitely cooled me down a bit.  I just hope Jake and Fox can put aside their addiction to grabbing large chunks of field, long enough to make this work.  What do ya think?  For one week can we trade in our Gun-slinging Cajun, for a Dink and Dunk Delhomme?

No. I don’t think this is a quick fix issue here. It’s not only Delhomme, but the entire team from coaches on down. You may be able to fix Delhomme (a big maybe), but what about the OL? The punt coverage? The defense? The play calling? The preparation of the coaches?

This isn’t going to be a one week fix.

the defense played well

when your on the field the entire game your going to give up yardage. the special teams can be fixed (hopefully!). but all in all this game was 75% offensive lines fault 25% delhomme

To be honest though, the D didn’t do much while on the field. McNabb would’ve had better stats had his receivers not dropped the ball so much, the score would have been more than 38. Also even with Kolb in, the D was sluggish. They left gaps wide open for recivers, weren’t getting to the QB quick enough (while McNabb was in), and the run D wasn’t terrific either. I’m not to hot on Meek’s D, but I’ll give it another week.

As for the ST, Crossman has been declining in that area for a while now. The official explanation is that there are inexperienced players on ST because of the cap problem. I’ll believe that. But letting Jackson go untouched to the endzone, is ridiculous.

If he's declining, how were our special teams units 12th in the league last year?

Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

are u serious

did u watch the game..most of those interception were his fault..ya o-line broke down but he could’ve easily thrown it away instead of forcing it or perhaps been more accruate

Really?

The defense allowed nearly 6 YPC against the run and got no pass rush the entire game.

I'm very optimistic.

It’s just tiring to have to defend what has always been a successful team, coach, and quarterback when people jump off the deep end based on one game when we’re looking at seven years worth of evidence that says this group is one of the best in the league.

Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

"always"

as in one year in the playoffs, the next out?!

not really “always” successful to me.

Winning means making the playoffs in sports.

If you can only make the playoffs every other year… you are not consistently winning, therefore you have not “always been a successful team, coach, and qb”.

We may disagree, and their is no fault in either of our logic… but that is just the way I see it.

And by no means is that me saying I think John Fox needs to be fired… I am not THAT crazy. I just see the winning thing a different way.

Still don’t know why you guys aren’t head coaches yourself, you sure are confident enough to dissect every little thing Fox does and then project what he “should” do.

Seriously, that should be a new television series. Disgruntled fans given the chance to coach and train their own little football team over the course of the series. The ones feeling athletic could have option of playing instead of coaching.

That would be hilarious.

Meanwhile, wait and see is the best option here. No overnight change is going to instantly make us perfect, I’m sorry.

But only by a point. So therefore I consider myself better then Fox and his 28 point debacle. ;)

I can't say anything...

I got blown out by 50 points. It figures the guy I was going against had Brees. I played Lance Moore, the only guy that didn’t have a TD reception from him.

/Sorry. I didn’t have a good week with football

That’s why they are “ex” coaches.

Jake still needs to start and the O line needs to make it easier for him to succeed.

Everyone is to blame here.

Great post! I'm with you on this 100%.......

Unlike many, I’m in the camp that thinks our best hope for getting to the Super Bowl is to hold out hope that somehow Delhomme will miraculously pull out of his turnover funk. These comments from these ex-coahes have me now rationalizing (wishfully) that maybe the Eagles & Arizona games were anomalies against what are regarded as the two fastest defenses in the NFL. Maybe that’s our achilles heal and we’ll be OK against more conventional defenses.
I know thats probably wishful thinking, but given the committment this organization has made to Delhomme I think the wise move is to do exactly as you say, install a game plan to protect him, try to get the boogeyman out his head and rely our vast talent in the other skill positions. Try to tweak the offensive philosphy a bit before going to the nuclear options QB wise.
Folks, I know I’m grasping here a little, but what else can we do as fans? I for one will be breaking out all my lucky charms and superstitions for this weeks game. The Panthers need all the positive vibes they can get!
And now that I just turmed my comment into a moonbat rant, Im gonna go find my tin foil hat and go outside to bark at the moon!!
GO PANTHERS!!!

I think they might have a point regarding the Eagles defense confusing us with how fast and aggressive they were playing, since let’s face it, this team has a recent history of not showing up for their home openers.

I recall in 2006 we were playing against the Falcons in our home opener and were heavily favored(and for good reason). What happened? We got embarrassed 20-6.

Now if Jake has another horrid game next week or the week after, then I agree we need to start someone else. I think we have enough talent on our offense that Moore or Feeley could come in and at least be competent, but the team around him needs to show up first.

We nearly lost the 1st 2!

Of course that was without Smitty… but I’m still not so sure that didn’t help us somehow.

LOL @ wishful thinking

Do yall really think Delhomme will have zero turnovers & 3 or more TD’s versus the Falcons? Do you really think that it was just this game & the Arizona game? How many excuses are yall going to give for this guy? Bottomline, Delhomme makes HORRIBLE decisions with the ball. He has a laundry list of faults that stick out like a sore thumb to EVERYONE except a few blind homers & the ownership.

It's about options not excuses

Jake has got it done in the past. These other guys have not. You just don’t go to your 3rd string QB or FA QB unless you are down to your last option.

DWG, I noticed something

You typically post a Delhomme hate filled post, then go your merry way. Never have I seen you refute any arguments, or say where we could do better, apart from benching Jake of course. Maybe you actually carry on a conversation, then people give your comments on Delhomme a little more credibility. Because as it stands right now, you’re just the guy who hates Delhomme and posts a little rant on why he should be benched every day.

Isn't that crown getting a little tight?

The way your head keeps getting swollen up, I’d think it may need resizing soon. Of course, most of us aren’t insufferable enough to think we need to wear a crown, so maybe I’m wrong.

Like all else here, it’s a matter of opinion.

He may be a "typical Panthers fan"

But he is one that never provides much relevant information to back up his argument, nor does he refute any logical comebacks or comments to his points. He justs posts the same thing over and over again (even in threads that don’t really have much to do with Delhomme). Kinda weak.

We all agree Jake is wildly inconsistent, don't we?

But inconsistentcy, by its very definition, means changeableness.

So why do any of us feel he’ll be consistent at anything, including being bad every game. To extrapolate the last 2 terrible games he’s had into a reliable indicator of similar future games is just as false an assumption as one which looks at two good past games he’s had in a row, and expecting excellence in all games after those.

Rather we should expect him to continue being erratic, leaving open the strong possibility that he’ll rebound.

There was a strong groundswell of support last year, as I recall, for him to get Comeback Player of the Year.

I don’t think we should count him out just yet — the guy’s been resilient his whole career, has assumed his share of blame for the last 2 games, and has expressed the wonderful attitude that so few pros have in them, i.e., “I screwed up; let’s get ready for the next game.”

After 54 hours have passed since the Philly game ended, I’ve gotten past it, and am on his side to get on to the next game.

Go Panthers!

I’ve been trying to express my thoughts on this and I think you said it very well. Jake Delhomme may indeed “be done” as I’ve seen many posters try to claim…..but to try and use the last two games as the sole reason why is something I don’t agree with.
