Josh McCown Placed on IR
This just in: According to a source, the Panthers have put backup quarterback Josh McCown and now are looking to sign a quarterback to serve as Jake Delhomme's backup.
McCown suffered knee and foot injuries in Sunday's 38-10 loss to Philadelphia. It appeared he would be back back in a month or less, but the Panthers decided to put him on IR.
Among the possibilities to take his place: Former Eagles' backup A.J. Feeley and Jeff Garcia, recently cut by Oakland.

Thanks LittleKing... good find.
I hope we sign Feeley… his name’s popped up in a couple of different places now.
- Delhomme
- Moore
- Feeley

Man, I'd rather have Garcia
I’m real familiar with both of these guys from their days with the Eagles.
Feeley is a serviceable back up but also a turnover machine. I’d much rather see Garcia, he’s just so damn smart, tough and protects the ball. He was amazing for the Eagles in 2006, stepping in at mid season and converting a lost season into a great playoff run where we finally lost to the Saints in the 2nd round.

+1 Because we have no idea what will become of our pass protection
Out of the guys mentioned, Garcia is the most illusive, and the one who can make plays with his feet. Finding another sack of potatoes who can throw the ball down field, won’t fix any of our problems from Sunday.

And why the hell does nobody in the NFL want a thing to do with him?

And he wasn’t cut, he asked to be released. At this late stage you don’t bring in a QB no matter how good he is unless something realy bad happened. And it did for us… Jake happened

we can always trade
I don’t see why no one has faith in Matt Moore..before they brought in Mclown he was suppose to be the future replacement…I don’t know about being the replacement but I feel like he can something happen if given proper opportunity..

+1 He should be the #2 in my view
He’s been here long enough, let’s see what the kid can do if we lose faith in Delhomme. I’m okay with Jake starting against the Falcons but if he sucks again he’s out and demoted. I can ha!ndle ‘inconsistent’ every now and then but ‘downright suck’ every game does not work !

We'll grab a QB in FA if Delhomme goes down for good.
You have to remember, John Fox is on the hot seat right now. He’s not going to sit around and say the season is done. He’s going to run out and get a QB in order to try to save his job. Desperate times call for desperate measures in that regard.

Quality backups are needed when your QB is out for a few games. But quality starters are needed when your current starter sucks

I don't agree with you on this one James...
I watched all of the Eagles preseason games. Kolb faced starters and second teamers while Feeley mostly mopped up against the deep deep reserves. Kolb was outsanding in the Eagles final preseason game against the Jets starters and 2nd teamers, putting up 24 points in one half. I hear what your saying about arm strength but I still like Garcia as a potential starter more than Feeley. Feeley has a tendency to try force passes and lacks the field generalship of Garcia.

Bleh on both Garcia and Feely
We need to save our money (what little we have) and promote from within our own ranks. Push Moore up to the QB2 and bring Cantwell up from the PS to fill in QB3. A lot people always freak and look to “veteran QB experience” but – in this case, would it really help us?
Past success isn’t always indicative of future success – especially when you put people in systems that do not play to their strengths. Both Feely and Garcia looked good – in west-coast-style offense schemes. That is not what Carolina runs – and it would take an investment in time/effort that we don’t have. If we had of looked in the off-season to address such things, sure. But now that the season has started I don’t think it’s viable.

Possible theory regarding Garcia
People have been calling for him all day. Well, that’s not happening with the Feeley signing, but why?
I think it’s DRAMA. This about this… Garcia was very vocal about getting cut by Philedelphia, being benched in Tampa Bay and being a backup in Oakland.
Like Jake, or hate him… his teammates LOVE him. That has always been abundantly clear. Bringing in Garcia would be bringing in a guy with a chip on his shoulder who believes he is an NFL starter. If Jake plays poorly, he could be as vocal about it to the media as people are on this blog. The Panthers don’t need that locker room turmoil regardless of his talent.
It makes sense when you see the Eagles were moving forward with McNabb, the Bucs with their future and Oakland with Russell. Maybe it’s inside info that Garcia causes locker room drama and controversy, and they don’t want it.
No fact to this, no basis, just pure conjecture. But it does make sense.

And then there's also the fact that the Eagles and Raiders both felt their guys were BETTER.

Last I checked, Russell was a fourth-year veteran who’s never done anything in the NFL. You’re suggesting they picked a QB who was more likely to lose games? Ahh, that makes total sense.

This is a great point
He is not at all a “Fox” guy based on this. But a lot of the drama in Tampa was Gruden’s fault. And I don’t think you bring Garcia here, unless he is the starter. I think he could be successful here as the starter, but as a backup to Jake things would just be chaotic.

Garcia is the best free agent option
At the least the Panthers need someone to give Jake some healthy competition. Maybe that’s why Jake can not get it together: No one behind him pushing him on the depth chart.
But with our running game and explosive big play receiver, we just need a QB that can get them the ball with out turning it over. The Panthers need to keep the ball in Williams, Stewart, Smith, Moore, and Goodson hands on offense to score points. I feel like Garcia would be the most likely to do be able to that while successfully managing the clock and protecting the ball.
With McCown gone we have an opportunity to get better. Garcia would definitely be an upgrade to McCown and hopefully the Panthers will look into that possibility.
by dudemanhey on Sep 14, 2009 6:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Really?
David Carr, a former #1 pick, didn’t “push” him? The fact that he came in in ‘03 and didn’t even win the job didn’t “push him?”

I know what you mean MP – when he fumbled I narrowed my eyes menacingly. I’m sure he felt it in Charlotte. What’s that drill where players who fumble in games have to carry a ball around the facility during the week?
Both Goodson and Delhomme should have to do that. Carry a football securely – and if someone knocks it out of their hands, they have to pay them. Hell, Delhomme can afford it now ;)

If not Garcia....
Then i say move Moore and Cantwell up the depth chart and draft a QB next season. Doing that, however, seems more like an indication of giving up on this young season.
I’m not ready to do that, but if Jake has a couple of more outings like that then the season could be all but over by the bye week 4.
