Ask The Falcoholic!
Hey, Panthers fans!
With the first week of the season in the books and one of those fun rivalry games fast approaching, I figured I'd toss this FanPost up and see if you have any questions about the Falcons. Are you itching to ask about what happened with a supposedly weak Falcons' defense this week? Do you want to hear about how the team will likely use Matt Ryan against your secondary? Would you really like a recipe for butterscotch brownies? Ask away!
I'll be here all week, so I'll hopefully hear from many of you. Here's to a good game this weekend!

Quick question
that comes from this week’s Panthers game…
How good is your secondary? And the pass rush?

The secondary is probably only average
But our pass rush looks like it took an enormous step forward this year. John Abraham is one of the best in the league, part-time edge rusher Kroy Biermann offers great pressure and our defensive tackles can get to the passer in a pinch. They make our secondary look a little better.

I was reading the recap from this weekend
seems like you guys got to the QB a lot.
That’s not good for us… and pressure causes Delhomme to do weird things.

had 4 sacks in the last game
2 of them coming from the only white guy on our defense and special teams superstar Kroy Biermann (one of these sacks came without having Abraham drawing double teams on the other side of the line). There was one point where Abraham bull rushed Jake Long onto his back and grabbed Pennington in the same step… the pass rush is definitely one of our stronger assets with a seemingly successful rotation.
The front 7 is beastly, however, I am not sure about how capable the 4 guys around them are for holding their own.

Its a little early yet Dave...
we’re still shell-shocked from the drubbing we just took. Expecting more the same this Sunday. Here’s a question for you..
How many TD’s do you think the Falcons will win by? 3, 4, 5? How many INT’s will Delhomme throw? 4,5,6? He’s averaging 4.5 over his last 2 games.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Sorry, I like to get an early start
Perhaps I should have been more mindful of that.
We’re not a big interception team. I would predict something like 28-14, with Delhomme tossing 2 TDs and 2 INTs.

Looking much improved this year
Against you guys, it’s going to be absolutely critical that we roll out our best run defense line, which would include Jamaal Anderson, Trey Lewis, Jonathan Babineaux or Peria Jerry and maybe Chauncey Davis. Our linebackers are everywhere.

This is how...
rival fans should behave toward each other. It’s not like we get paid to be fans. We don’t have to hate each other. As a matter of fact, it kind of funny…I’m a die never Panther fan but if there was no Panthers I’d just about pick any other NFC South team to cheer for over pretty much any team in the league.
Amen
I’m a firm believer that friendly rivalry makes games better than a bitter, angry one.

The Falcons are not my least favorite team anymore
that’s because the HUGE annoying falcons fan that worked in my office no longer works here. It’s nice having something other than:
Vick, vick, vick, vick, vick, and vick. Falcons are the greatest ever, and did i mention I wanted to keep vick. we will blow everyone out of the water and nobody can spot us. oh and did I mention vick should be a falcon. Plus, Roddy White is the best receiver of all time and turner could play all positions. and vick, vick, vick, vick, vick, vick.
Or something like that.
Thanks Dave for being a good falcons fan.

I have a ?
What happened to the running game in Atlanta yesterday? Turner seemed largely ineffective.
The Dolphins literally dared the Falcons to pass
They stacked the box against Turner all game long, and he’s not quite superhuman enough to overcome that.

You won't have that problem Sunday
We’ll play 10 yds off the line and let your receivers catch the ball short or give the dump off to the RB. It’s an exciting brand of football sure to suck the life out of our chances of winning.

We've got you right where we want you.
After your dominant win - and our dominated loss — the width and breadth of your cocky expectations cannot be measured. Bookies may not be able to quote a line on this charade of a one-sided slaughter. It can only be compared to a Top Ten ranked college team playing a small school cupcake opponent. I’m sure such numbers as 56-0 are being bandied about on Peachtree.
From such conditions upsets arise. Beware the easy win.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Defensively, we have to stop the run
I think Delhomme could still burn us, but I’d much rather take a gamble with him than with Williams and Stewart. They’ll likely bring plenty of outside pressure on obvious pass downs to try to rattle Delhomme, as well.
Offensively, it’s going to be Turner until we can’t Turner no more. He’ll be ready to run after getting stuffed this week, and hopefully he can get it going to the point where we can take some strikes down field and work in the play action.

You need guys with size and strength, because this is a pretty good run-blocking line. You’ll also need corners who can make the Falcons pay for throwing.

Also do you guys run over punt returners before they catch the ball, and make illegal blocks in the back on special teams? Because that’s another sure way to score on Sunday.

it almost seemed like they were using Play Action in the first quarter to establish the Run (rather than using the Run to establish Play Action). I don’t think it worked very well and they will probably go back to what works, Run first, Play Action later.

Does Atlanta blitz much?
I can remember Abraham rattling Jake in the past… but don’t remember too much blitzing. If you guys don’t then we can probably pull things together for a win. But if you guys have any sense, you would blitz every down… Jake might even fumble a hand-off at this rate.

I just want to make sure you understand, that if Jake wasn't color blind
And could differentiate between team jersey colors… Than Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart would absolutely annihilate your defense… leaving Turner, Ryan and crew bowing at their feet.

Fox said he would be bringing it up with the League office
Brown is blantantly knocked down from a block from behind, as he’s about 15 yards from the ball carrier, coming right at him vertically — no assurance that he would’ve made the stop, but knocked on his face as he was, it sure made a wide open lane to get to mid-field.
It was obvious and I couldn't believe they didn't call it
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

I honestly thought it was pretty funny watching the replay
Him and Clabo, like two man-mauling machines just kinda ran over the Dolphin well after the whistle was blown… it’s like they had never heard it and were completely oblivious to the fact that he was just standing there, waiting to line up for the next play.

As a Falcons fan, I know exactly what this year is going to be like for y’all. So except for 2 weeks this year, I’m pulling for Carolina. Good luck week after next…

I don't want to hear anything about Georgia Tech.
I don’t even want to see them. Clemson would have beat them if it wasn’t for the freaking idiot ref and their dumb holding calls. Even if FSU happens to start to pull the upset, they’ll just call penalties against you so that you lose!
Clemson is 1-0. I’m bitter. Curse the Refs.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
There was an equal amount of bad calls and no-calls going both ways Rev
Sure, Clemson’s hurt bad, but Tech had an interference no-call that could extended their next to last drive that instead ended up as a FG.
Go Jackets! Clemson sucks! ;)
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Haha! You want to know why they called that?
It was because Clemson had that penalty the previous drive before your field goal that the Refs called that penalty on your team in the first place. Watch college football enough and you’ll understand what I mean. Every time there is an obvious no-call on the field, the refs will call the first thing they see on the next drive on the other team in order to try and compensate. I’m about 110% positive that the refs did that during the closing minutes of the game.
Incompetance.
The compensation for the Tigers wasn’t enough though, their call on us completely blew our game. Your team still went for a field goal and won the game. If the refs didn’t call that penalty, we would have won the game no question, at least from my point of view as a Clemson fan.
At the very least, I’m sure we could both agree that there should be some sort of rematch. Maybe if the Tigers win out we’ll meet each other again in a certain ACC Championship game.
And this time, we will have our revenge.
Heil Clemson!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
How would you judge Matt Ryan this year so far based on the Pre-Season/Regular season
Do you think he is going to match last years numbers? If not, will he be a better or worse QB?
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
He's going to match and then some
I think he’ll actually have a better season than his rookie campaign. I say that because we have a good offensive line, he’s got more weapons than he had last year and he should settle right in as the year progresses. I don’t know that he’ll put up crazy numbers, but I’d be very satisfied with a small step forward.

by WillParker81 on Sep 17, 2009 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions
He's a playmaker.
When you lose a guy that’s good in the open field with the ball, it’s always a loss. In all actuality, we had to replace with with two people. Marty Booker as the primary 3rd WR, and Eric Weems as the PR. This took up a roster spot we could have used on a developing WR like Aaron Kelly.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Dave.... okay... I'm ready for my question.
Even though the Falcons only allowed 96 yards rushing last week, they allowed Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams to put up more YPC than both of their averages last season (which were good years for both of them).
As a Falcon fan, do you chalk this up to the wildcat solely? or do DeAngelo and J-Stew scare you? Especially given that this will more than likely be a run heavy week.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Concerned
Williams and Poo-art are one of the better tandems in the league, if you ask me, and given that the Panthers aren’t likely to trust Delhomme to toss 30-40 passes, we’re going to get a heavy dose of them. If anyone’s going to kill us, it’ll be them.
That said, our run defense is much improved this year. Your best chance for success is to run at John Abraham all day long, since he’s not exactly known for his run-stopping abilities.

Good show! Well done :D
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
It wasn't the Wildcat
They only ran 3 somewhat “Wildcat” type plays for a total of 4 yards:
1) Snap to Ronnie Brown – up the middle for 4 yards
2) Pat White keeper for no gain
3) Pat White incomplete (deep bomb) pass
Ricky Williams had a 14 yard run on a draw play in the first quarter. Ronnie Brown had a 14 yard run in the third quarter (I don’t remember what kind of play it was – play by play just says run “up the middle”). They only had 5 more runs between them that gained 5+ yards (topping out at 7). Not a dominating performance in run defense, but it certainly looked better than at most points last season… But yes, DeAngelo scares the crap outta me.
The more I think about this game...
the more it concerns me. Delhomme has been known for his on again, off again games. You really can’t count what happened 7 months ago as an “on again-off again situation” and assuming he doesn’t throw 52 interceptions this game, it may be closer than I’d like, especially if you all can get that ground game established early.
