Eagles vs. Panthers Game Day Open Thread
Philadelphia Eagles at Carolina Panthers, Sep 13, 2009 1:00 PM EDT
If you are reading this Panthers fans we are inside one hour until kick-off of the 2009 season. Mini-camp, OT's and training camp are history. The preseason tune up is over. The bumps and bruises are being dressed and the Panthers are getting pumped! On the surface the Panthers are facing an NFC contender who brings a world of experience on both sides of the ball. The line is Eagles -2 and I'm thinking the Panthers +2 is a sure bet. I'd take the 'over' as well whatever it is. Hey, I finally found someone outside Charlotte who is bullish on the Panthers over the Eagles:
It must just be the uninformed dolts in the national media who haven’t bothered to look at what’s going on with the Eagles this year. All they see is that Andy Reid made the playoffs last year and they love kissing his big fat ass. I, on the other hand, have been watching the horror show unfolding this entire off-season up until the eve of the start of the regular season. The Eagles have been affected by death, injuries, free agent defections, bad personnel choices, stupidity and arrogance. I’m just waiting for the locusts. I don’t think the Eagles will beat the Panthers in week 1.
The Panthers went 8-0 in the regular season last year and will surely be ready the shake the taste of the 0-4 preseason off. The Panthers have to avoid turnovers that keep the Eagles hopes up conjuring up a road win. Okay, enough talk....
This is now and Open Thread!
Go Panthers!!

So I still don’t know who is the starting DE opposite Peppers. Whoever he is, he will face Justice in Justice’s first ever start at RT. I like that. We really should bring some blitzes at him. Also, is Moore officially the #3 receiver? Who is officially the nickelback? I’m so confused. All I know is D-Will will have his best season ever this year, starting in less than an hour.
It will be Brayton with a rotation of Brown and Johnson in certain scenarios

They had actually talked about moving Pep over to LE.
Moore is the #3 WR. Wilson is the third corner off the bench, but Marshall will actually be the inside CB in the nickel. Oh, and here’s the official depth chart.

Yes.
Hadn’t seen that. They apparently had to change the lineup with Harris not starting. Martin’s S reps are necessary if Harris can’t go as well as they hope.

I was thinking about something earlier.
We all know about the Seymour trade between the Raiders and the Patriots earlier right? They traded a 1st rounder in order to get a strong DT.
Only, he’s on his contract year and there have been no talks of an extension. What would you guys say if Seymour worked out the last bit of his contract, and then rejoined the Pats?
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Wouldn't be anything wrong with it.
But I don’t know that he’d be willing to go back. He was pretty mad about having been traded.

With the exception of the 1st drive The Panthers offensive coaches are putting the team in terrible positions by attacking the Eagles strengths and not exploilting the weaknesses. We should have committed to the run and set up play action, run screens to take advantage of the Eagles aggressiveness. Turnovers and the non-call on the punt return have us in hole but talent wise we match up with the Eagles. The good news is its a 4 quarter game and a 16 game season and we can come back.

outperformed is an understatement
jake has been getting hit all day, the RBs are getting hit in the backfield, the receivers are having trouble getting open, the defense is trying the new no-hands tackling technique that only works in high school. at least matt moore is in the game now.

I know that I am on Jake’s case alot today but this is the way he has played long term. I do believe McCown or Moore could at least get out of the pocket and not give them a easy target. Also the defense is asleep today. I know Fox has had a good run here but he is not building the team up to compete in the NFL.
Is this really "the way he has played?"
He has a QB rating of 85+ for his career. He’s at 17 today. I’m not a doctor, but those seem different to me.

I have been on Team Jake all offseason. Good quarterbacks do have bad games…but bad quarterbacks have bad games too. The play calling has also been poor. Every third and long is a screen pass. Very predictable…and the offensive line isn’t exactly playing well.

Please....
stop running off tackle on every first down andalso why not try try a draw or screen on one of these 2nd or 3rd and longs to take advantage of the Eagles over pursuit. This is reminds me of last years Eagles Steelers game where the Eagles almost killed Rothlesberger due to the predictability of their play selection. The Steelers came back from that spankin and had a pretty good season if I recall correctly.
I've always
been behind jake, but its hard to back up any quarterback when he throws 9 INT’s in two games, even if it’s the season opener
The Eagles are starting three backups on the line.
And we’re not going to get a sack. Wow.

No, I disagree...
The Panthers have not run any plays to try to neutralize the Eagles agressiveness… Like I said earlier the Eagles did this exact same thing to the Steelers last year and almost killed Rothlisberger. A few more draws and screens would help to keep the Eagles back on their heels a little bit.
I truly feel bad for the Panthers offensive unit and to be honest the Panthers defense never really had a chance to take control of the game due to turnovers and the special teams score..

What he did during his career is irrelevant
the fact is, he’s struggled big time as of late.
I’d like to say that it’s just bad luck… but so many forced passes and all that has to point to him.
Right now, he’s playing like a “no-talent bum”… and we don’t need that from our starter.
Of course, our back-ups are worse, so that’s no help.
And we can’t target a high-upside guy in the 1st round next year, because we’re short a first rounder again.

12 wins
that was more about the running game than him.
Sure, he had some highlights (SD, for example), but there were plenty of games (Detroit, Oakland come to mind, I think there was at least one more) where he struggled mightily and the running game had to carry him to a win.

No Procton
The ints he’s thrown in this game were entirely Jake’s fault. Jake cost us today’s game.
Please watch the recap again and tell me that the interceptions today had nothing to do with Delhomme. The one he threw to Smithy def was not on target, there was one where he had a plenty of time to throw only to give it the Eagles secondary. Of course there were times when O line failed, but a smart quarterback would not force that pass. There’s nothing wrong with getting sacked if you can’t make the play. Don’t just throw the ball hoping some WR would catch it.
Those turnovers cost us the game.
I certainly didn't say they had "nothing to do with Delhomme."
I said none was entirely his fault. Major distinction. The team lost as a team.

Jake Delhomme is simply too SLOW!
Was the loss all his fault, no, but it starts with him. This was a carbon copy of the Cardinals game, great opening drive, the other team COMPLETELY figures out the game plan, shut down the run and wait for Jake to collapse. People wake up, Jake Delhomme is not our only problem, but he is our biggest. SLOW, SLOW, SLOW, pocket awareness, pregressions / reads, scrambling, its like he cannot think as fast as the game is being played. Maybe he will bounce back, I doubt it, but honestly, Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams, Johnathan Stweart, Julius peppers, the tallent is there, with injurys to the defense the quarterback play has to be strong. Oh why didnt we wait on resigning him, there is not a person on this blog that would argue that Jay Cutler would have put us over the top offensively. Im going to calm down now, but it is as obvious as the stinch of a good fart; something needs to change before the previously mentioned players get discouraged or too old and like Peppers; want off the sinking ship!
So how precisely would you explain the multiple sack escapes he made early in the game?
Or the scramble for the first down? The only player out of Smith, Williams, Stewart, and Peppers who did anything in the game when it mattered was Williams, and he was eventually shut down by the shoddy line play. You can take Cutler’s (or Brees’, or Aaron Rodgers’) numbers. I’ll take the winner.

Forget for a moment how the bad the pass coverage was. They only had one TD drive not off of a turnover, and a special teams TD. That’s only 14 pts! Had Jake just thrown the ball away or wrapped up the ball and taken a sack when blitzers were in his face, then we would have complety been in this… And probably won!
I officially am starting the sign Jeff Garcia movement. He might not fit our offense, but a couple plays here and there is all we need.

NOT HIS FAULT
We keep making excuses for Jake year after year and he never gets any better. I think he is on a downhill run and at his age that will be hard to turn around. We will never get any better with him at the helm of this floundering ship. We have a whole season of teams that are just as good as the Eagles or better, at this rate I can’t wait for hockey season to start. At least the Hurricanes made it into the playoffs and did very well until they ran into the Flyers. I don’t want to lay the whole day’s mess on Jake because there is more than enough to go around and the rest of the team are young and just arn’t playing (coaching let down). Jake has had alot of sucess in the past, but that was in the past not the future. I hope Jerry R, John F and Marty H will take a honest look at the current roster and make some adjustments to lay a sound future for this team. If I thought they were doing that I wouldn’t worry about a losing season, but I don’t see that happening. I guess I need to find something else to do on Sundays.
What are you talking about?

Pittsburgh
I stand corrected, my head was spinning when I wrote this. But they showed alot of heart and went much futher than anyone expected them to go.
Carolina Hurricanes are one of my loves.
Hockey is friggin’ rugby on ice. I wish the state would get further behind their most sucessful professional team.
Amen for the voice of reason.
The Panthers turnovers and special team breakdown made the Eagles look like the 2nd coming of the 1972 Dolphins. However, I personally really put most of the blame on poor gameday coaching by the offensive staff.
I think the gameplan coming in was great. We came out and rammed it down their throats but then got drunk on our success to early after only the first drive, went to play action way to early on the second drive against the best cornerbacks in the NFL and Sheldon Brown comes up with a terrific INT and it snowballs from there. The way to beat the Eagles is to committ to the run, pound them and then go to play action once they start crowding the box, I’ve seen the Giants & Skins beat the Eagles with this formula time after time. I really think the Panthers could have done it also. Delhomme is what he is and they should stick to a game plan that suits him. Also the Eagles we’re really primed to be burned by a draw play after the second quarter and I can’t remember the Panthers trying even one. At least it might have kept the linebackers on their heels a bit. Take solace that the Eagles beat the Steelers in similar fashion last season. Hopefully the Panthers can rally amongst themselves and carry a chip on shoulder to Atlanta and take it out on a familiar division rival.
GO PANTHERS!!!
Atlanta
I guess we can say the same thing after next weeks game and I guess it is not too hard to figure out I have no confidence in the Panthers at this time. The team basically is very talented but the coaching staff and Jake are out of phase with the teams abilities and players. Don’t misunderstand me I have been a fan ever since they started here and will continue to support them, but they have got to take a good look at themselves and be willing to make corrections no matter that they are.
If Jake comes out and throws 4 TD, no picks and has a rating of 110 against Atlanta...
how many people calling for his head now will own up and admit they were wrong.
My guess is less than 5%
don't be ridiculous
If he threw that many TDs and had no picks his rating would be at least 120.
And the same people who hate him now would still find a way to call for his head.
I hope he does and we beat them 42 to zip, but I do not think he can come back as we hope he can. Age is just catching him faster than he or John thinks it is. Jake gave us some wonderful wins in the last minutes of alst of games but I feel that magic is gone. It may take a couple of years but we need to start finding the replacement.
Moore and Mccown have shown that they aren't it
The replacement either isn’t on the roster, or this problem goes far beyond the quarterback.
It might be 5%
but then he’ll come back the week after and struggle again.
That’s not going to get it done in this league.

Wow
Haters comments sure will be easy to write this week.
Jake has proven he’s a good NFL QB, and Henning has proven he’s a good OC. Jake/Henning were a good combo. Jake screwed up today, but whoever put together that abortion of a blocking scheme and the game plan we used on offense needs to be calling plays in pop warner.
This is the second game in a row that we crushed the other team on our opening drive, then were crushed back. If only there was a word to describe what a team should do in that situation… like adjust or something…
+1 million
It’s funny how after 8 months of seeing the same posters every day, all discussing the team we magically get 100 new people all calling for Jake’s head with again no alternatives.
Oh wait… the messiah Jeff Garcia… my mistake
Jeff would be amazingly bad in our offense
Far worse than Jake.
On the other hand, if we called a bunch of screens and slants then maybe Jake would look a little better than he did today.
How could he look worse
Has he ever had 5 plus turnovers in back to back games? He doesn’t fit our offense, but all he needs to do is protect the ball.

New people
You have 100 new people that are commenting because the season just started and some of us have just found this site. Also I have be stating that the Panthers needed to be looking for several years for his replacement. We needed that replacement here a couple years ago to tutor under Jake and be ready to take over when what we are seeing happening now, happens. All we have now is fill ins not the future.
Does Jeff Garcia=playoffs?
Would he have performed better with that O-Line?
If you believe the answer to both of those is yes, then I will humbly disagree that a QB who was cut by one of the worst teams in the NFL is the answer.
I have no problems with new people with new perspectives… but these perspectives offer no new insights. Nothing that hasn’t been discussed ad naseum throughout the summer.
Personally, I feel that the more the merrier. But, I’m also being fairly territorial about the best Panther’s site on the internet being watered down with hate and becoming a glorified Charlotte Observer comment section.
Getting cut by the Raiders means nothing

I agree with you.....
that Garcia would not have fared better today, but if McCown is hurt bad and we need to sign a back up QB, I have to say Garcia when he was with the Eagles was one tough SOB who played within his capabilities avoided turnovers and could fare well with the Panthers running game. He won’t win a game with his arm but he won’t lose it either.
With that said IMHO this team’s best chance to win is with Jake Delhomme at QB.
GO PANTHERS!!!
He would not have fared better???? Are you kidding me?
You are saying Garcia would have had 5 turnovers and 4 INTS? No way. He would done a better job dodging the blitz and hit our TEs, who were open all day. Remember Philly only got 2 TDs on their own. Garcia would have protected the ball, and with our running game, that’s all it would have taken to win.
This crap about he doesn’t fit in our offense is ridiculous. 11 turnovers in 2 games is what doesn’t fit in our offense.

I’m excited to have more voices, I really am.
It’s just that analysis here goes beyond the superficial and we always have a tendency to really deeply breakdown a situation beyond ‘Person X sucks’ or ‘Person Y is crap’

I am not a Jake hater at all, I just believe in reality and I don’t think player evaluation is very good with the Panthers staff and they hold on to players too long. With free agency you can’t run your team like that and stay sucessful in the NFL. I think Jake will go down as one of our better players picked overall and has had more impact, but time slips on by.

Well let me break the trend... Jake X sucks, Jake Y is crap!
I can’t break it down any deeper than that. I have defended this guy too long… I just can’t do it anymore. Sub par QB ratings I can deal with in John Fox’s system. But 5+ turnovers! Enough is enough! Everybody knows how to rattle Jake now… this is not going to get better.

Of course he would have played better because he's mobile!
All he would have had to do was check down to RBs or TEs… OR at worst case just throw the ball away. I am 100% confident that Garcia could do that! But Jake has never been able to do anything except chuck the ball down field.

Jake was the reason for the Williams TD run, he called the audible.
Agreed
but if it’s close, then one play can turn it from a loss to a win.
Avoid the TOs, score even once, and you have a ballgame where a late play by the defense of the offense gives you the win.
Obviously, that’d require the defense to be good (they were for the most part) as well, and it’s hard to see how the game would’ve gone down, but if you avoid the TOs, the team will generally still be in the game.

What is the difference?
There are two columns in the standings: wins and losses. No “great wins,” “awful losses,” “blowout wins,” “last-play losses,” or anything else. A loss is a loss is a loss.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Sometimes, though, a loss is more than a loss
I was thinking how we would have been reacting, had we been Bengal fans, and lost our first game on a fluke that resembled the “immaculate reception.”
We’d have been just as mad about the loss, but wouldn’t be turning on our team, or calling for this or that guy’s ouster, benching, etc.
This goes deeper than a loss. This is a concern for the future.
"We" might not have been.
But you obviously forget this is Charlotte. One loss, no matter what kind, sends half the fanbase off the deep end. And it’s always Delhomme’s fault.

Only when he has 5 TOs
if he had a perfect game (well, maybe not perfect, but if he left us in it), and the defense gave up a 90 yard drive in the final minute, it wouldn’t be on Delhomme.

Yet people would still find a way to blame it on him.

Yeah, but some people live by the
“blame the QB for everything” rule.

Proof
Neil, that proves that there are many Panther fans out there and they get excited and say what they feel. I have enjoyed reading everyone of the comments. I might not agree with most of them but we are showing our love and concern for the team.
Welcome CWilly
I have been the pessimist of the off season. And I am sad to say it just got much worse.

Well I had to leave and find a brickwall to bang my head against after the game, but hopefully things will get better including my head.
Two things
First- I’m with ST. I didn’t post much here during the off-season, but I’m a huge pessimist and the lack of movement this offseason didn’t help things.
Second- (and more importantly, I think)… hopefully your head isn’t too damaged

Well....
Don’t get mad at me when I say that I hope that the ball is put in Jake’s hands as few times as possible. At this point, we need to give our running game a chance to win games. Irregardless of how bad we did, we’re still JUST 0-1.
We have one of the best RB’s in the league, the best linebacker core with the most depth, we’re still a pretty good team. We didn’t show it on the football field today, aside from the opening drive.
That’s probably what makes me the most upset. We showed on the opening drive that we could win the game. Just over an 8 minute drive, 70 yards, and a TD. And then we implode. Weird, weird football. Oh well, next week guys. Next week.
90% run, 10% pretending to pass the ball. That’s the gameplan for next week.

I completely agree, when we run the ball we have the two best rb’s in the league no doubt about it. But when they say “ok jake you have to chuck the ball like you used to.” thats when it gets bad, hopefully we will be able to build up the o line and take out atlanta. if jake can sit himself down and look in the mirror and say ok it’s partially my fault that we lost and I need to play better and rally the troops we will have another playoff run. However, haven’t we seen this scenario before? Kerry Collins?
