Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson Sons Resign from Team
Wow, didn't see this one coming. Both of Jerry's sons Mark & Jon, who have been working for the team in a significant capacity for many years have resigned from their positions.
"It has been a very exciting time, and I feel very fortunate and pleased to have been a part of it," Jon said. "We have a great staff that has been in place for a long time, and I am confident they will move forward without missing a beat."
Since no reason was given we can only speculate. My first thought is they are probably taking over significant roles in his business enterprise with his health what it is. Big Cat must be preparing for his complete departure from business and retiring all together. Just a guess though. I can't imagine what else it could be since they are leaving together.
Any other theories?
Update by Jaxon: Details of the cause of the dual resignations is emerging and it took me by surprise:
According to Charles Chandler of the Charlotte Observer, "[o]ngoing sibling disputes" resulted in the joint resignations.
And the joint resignations apparently resulted from a decision by their father, Jerry Richardson, to figuratively clunk their heads together and tell them to get out.
Darin Gantt did provide this info via Tweet as well, they have no plans to sell the team or leave Charlotte.
#Panthers official said no plans to sell team or leave Charlotte.

Just don't leave Charlotte
That’s all I ask. I am a little bit nervous from just having lived through the George Shinn era that when the Big Cat retires, I won’t like the new owner at all. I would have preferred he keep it in the family.
The sons are still part of ownership
just getting out of management. Gantt says they want “to stretch their legs” so to speak.

My thoughts...
My thought is that because they are heirs to the team that for business reasons they need to be considered “owners” and not employees, if anything were to happen to Jerry Richardson. Inheritence law is ver tricky especially when the thing you may inheriet is worth a billion dollars. Rememeber when the Redskins were sold to the highest bidder because of inheritence taxes? It would not surprise me to find out that they (keep in mind there are other minority owners) are going to become the legal majority owners in the future.
As far as the moving thing… No worries there. This team is going nowhere. Bank of America just restructred their stadium debt a few years ago so for at least 26 years they are here in that present staduim unless they can write a 200 million dollar check to pay of their mortgage. Plus where would they go? Nowhere… so get that thought out of your minds.
There are a ton of issues when it comes to keeping a business in the family like this. The good news is that we’ve never heard a single thing that would lead us to believe there would ever be in-fighting among the Richardson family, and that’s good news long-term for Panther fans.
I’ll just share this one little story. My college roommate my freshman year was one of the sons of Bruton Smith (he of the NASCAR and car dealership empires). This was some seventeen-ish years ago before even Texas Motor Speedway, but even then the Smith boys had discussed among themselves what it would mean when their father passed, and what it would mean when his assets passed to them, and how their relationships might change as a result. And it’s a huge benefit if the kids get along with one another, which the Smiths all did. But they understood how it tore families apart when they fight among themselves, and had plans in place to avoid that.
The Richardsons seem to have a lot of similarities, with less money and less assets in play (because the Smiths are out-of-this-world wealthy these days), but it’s definitely a lot bigger than your average mom-n-pop shop. So my hope is that this is, as you’ve all said, part of a process to make the succession from Jerry to Mark and Jon as smooth as possible across the entire Richardson empire. And hopefully that doesn’t happen for many, many years.
This makes me nervous.
No successors were named for the both of them.

That confused me a little too.
If it was in the family, then obviously they knew it was coming. Surely they would have interviewed, hired and had replacements ready to go.
Unless that’s been done and they wanted seperate press conferences… who knows.
fired maybe?
i mean theres many ways we could look at this….1 mark and jon wanted a “Vick” or wutever and big cat wouldnt have it…draft pick decisions via trades…the trade today with wutever pick we used…big cats loss in faith in his 2 sons ability to run the team…or maybe to be his successor in the event something were to happen… but the panthers.com article just leads me to believe that there is some sort of problem or what have you…since there was no reason given to make sense of this
JAKE IS THE BEST OPTION FOR CAROLINA FOR THE NEXT 2 OR THREE YEARS GET OVER IT!!! AND JULIUS PEPPERS IS THE BEST DE IN THE NFL 100% EFFORT OR NOT!!! PERIOD! WE CANT DO ANY BETTER SO SHUT THE F#@K UP
The reason is...
…the two brothers disagreed with one another too much. At least one of them decided it might be better for the organization if they left. That means the day-to-day running of the business side of the stadium and Panthers organization will be turned over to some different guys once the Big Cat figures out what he wants to do. Mark and Jon Richardson will go into business for themselves doing something different where they don’t have to butt heads over anything. The ownership of the franchise stays intact. The succession of ownership has to be something Jerry has certainly planned for once he passes on.
In addition, all of this only affects the business side of the Panthers’ organization and has no impact whatsoever on the football side of things. So, everyone relax. The team isn’t going to be sold. They’re not relocating the franchise to a different city. Jerry’s still calling the shots. Fox and Hurney will be focused on the football operations like always. So, chill out and don’t panic. It’s just a couple of brothers who couldn’t co-exist within the family business. Happens all the time. No biggie.
