Panthers Training Camp Day 3 Open Thread
Since a number people and players continue to send tweets throughout the day I thought I would try an open thread to collect the info and focus comments on the days events. It seemed the better route to take with two practices today. Feel free to discuss any and all Panthers TC topics below.
Here's the first tweet from Gantt this morning:
daringantt#Panthers w/o Beason, Ryne and Duke Robinson and CJ Davis for this morning's full practice.
I'm not worried about Beason or Duke but its a tough break for CJ Davis. No idea what Ryne' issue is
And another a few moments ago:
daringanttFormer #Panthers DE Mike Rucker (tv color man) at camp seeing how the other half lives, hanging on the sidelines with the rest of the media.
This is now an open thread!
more after the jump...
Here's Big Nick's vid on Kemo's injury:

The more Rhyne is out
The more opportunity Goodsen has. However I heard they have yet to work on punt returns.

Goodson
“cpanthersMike Goodson being tested in the blocking end of a combo drill by James Anderson, who plows into him…. Goodson, however, keeps his ground.”
Seems like when James Anderson came he was known as a workout warrior and a strength guy so seems like Goodson is holding his own on the blocking front!
Is this a tweet?
If so who are you following?

Rucker?
How is DE Mike Rucker this year? Can he still produce at a high level?

You Stink. You Win.
Tough break for CJ? What happened to him?
Also, I get the feeling more and more that Rhyne is going to be cut. Goodson seems to be impressing thus far and our receiver corps is pretty deep. If Goodson can at least compete with Rhyne at punt returns it’s all but a forgone conclusion.
Ryne shouldve been released last year. I dont know why they are holding on to this guy, he missed the entire season last year & now he’s out again at the start of camp.
Well, when Rhyne came on with the team he showed a lot of promise and explosiveness. He impressed at punt return when we desperately needed one. I even heard references to Steve Smith in regards to Rhyne. But yeah, he’s had injury issues and if this Goodson kid is as good as everyone says he is, I think the Panthers would rather use that extra player on defense.
If Ryne is not worried he should be...
with our luck we will cut him and someone else will pick him up and he’ll be a Pro Bowler (I’m down a little on the Kemo injury)

Dear lord, this really is a Not For Long league, huh?
DWG, you’re already trying to cut Ryne after only seeing him play during his rookie season. I hope your boss is just a smidge more forgiving than you are.
“DWG spent his first day on the job just getting settled into his office. The second day, he broke his foot on the way into work. I tell you, if he even coughs on day 3, he’s out of here!”

Did we improve our offense more than defense again this draft? t

All I know is...
if DT Jarron Gilbert (my mock draft selection) ends up kicking ass for the Bears its going to be a huge “I told you so” from me. We could be sliding Gilbert into Kemo’s slot with no worries! He was available for both 2nd round selections as he went early 3rd.

Lloyd Tweets
I know we were all worried about it, on the edge of our seats waiting for the out come, but Rhys Lloyd passed his drug test today.
Tweet from Lloyd about 1pm.
rhysjllod: Drug test a success. I flowed. Now just chilling out for a bit till meetings.
New DT apparently signed
Darin is reporting that we signed DT George Hypolite. He indicated that this most likely means Kemo was placed on IR.
He's just a TC body
until first cut downs maybe. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Panthers gave a draft pick next year for a vet DT in the next couple weeks.

another update
Thomas Davis had hurt his right knee, don’t know the seriousness but they did tape and icepack it (according to Darin). Landon johnson working in his place at LB.
So what all panthers tweet?
I’ve got Beason and Lloyd, anyone else?
Let us know who you’re following…
I’d love to hear some steve smith up in here, did you see on ESPN about Cromartie who complained aboue the ish food… I think he got fined, it was pretty funny!

oops
that didn’t come out right. I meant to say, that everything he has posted so far seems to be older and hasn’t posted during draining camp.
Wow, I messed that up.
Wow, indeed.
English is… what, your third language? Third-and-a-half?
That felt like you had a grudge against grammar.

Watching NFL Network today
Marshall Faulk and Michael Lombardi agree that Atlanta will not make the playoffs. Only a 46% stength of schedule last year and White’s holdout doesn’t bode well for them this year.
And they both think Carolina and New Orleans will battle for the NFC South, with one taking the division the other taking wild card

Here's a crazy thought...
What if Tampa’s one of the competitive teams in the division? Everyone looks at them, their changes in coaching, the dismantling of their defense, change of quarterback, etc., and sees a team who won’t compete this year.
But, lest we forget, they’ve got Earnest Graham, Cadillac Williams and they added 215-yards-against-us Derrick Ward. And their O-line doesn’t suck. And they’ve still got 200-yards-against-us Antonio Bryant.
They have weapons. And their defense is a complete unknown; might be good, might be bad. Don’t write them off, that’s all I’m saying.

its possible
buy very unlikely.
Lets just say I wouldnt bet my house on them not doing that… but I might talk about the car.

I"d be okay with that
I’d prefer the division title again, but just making the playoff would be nice. Oh, and ATL not making it is awesome!
I'll actually be surprised if...
…the NFC South places two teams in the playoffs this year. Everyone’s playing a tough schedule. The winner of the division will probably be 10-6. Runner up might be 9-7, but they could easily lose out on a wildcard spot because a couple of other NFC teams wind up with better records by season’s end. Thus, I think it’s really important the Panthers go all out for the division crown. Otherwise, they may continue their trend of failing to make the playoffs yet again in back-to-back seasons.
But that’s just my two-cents,
—Neil
I kinda agree based solely on the NFC South strength of schedule
But when I look at the other NFC divisions, I have a hard time finding 5 teams that I am convinced will make the playoffs. Philly is the only team that didn’t get worse in the East (and they all have to play South), the North is full of what looks like .500 teams, and the West??? I wouldn’t be surprised if 9-7 gets you in this year.
Of course all predictions go out the window in 2 weeks anyways.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
I anticipate...
…the wildcards probably coming from the NFC North and NFC East. For instance, the Eagles or Giants probably have the edge to reach the playoffs, one as a division champ and the other as a probable wild card. And I think Minnesota takes the crown in the NFC North, and that leaves Chicago or Green Bay to improve enough (and play a weak enough schedule) to grab the other wild card. I think the same scenario could play out with Arizona and Seattle in the NFC West, too. The Cardinals will be primed to get back to the playoffs and I think Seattle is ready to bounce back and probably benefits from a weak schedule, too.
Compare that to the Panthers and our tough schedule, and I think we’ll be lucky to beat out our division for a playoff spot. Thus, it’s more of a race against our divisional rivals and how we all fare against our shared opponents this year. We don’t get the benefit of skating into the playoffs on weak competition like the AFC West, Detroit Lions, etc. fro last year.
But that’s just my two-cents,
—Neil
