News: Texans trade DT to Chargers (not to us)
With the Panthers in dire need of help at DT, particularly experienced help, it's worth noting that the Texans traded former first-round pick Travis Johnson to the Chargers for a sixth-round draft pick, which could conditionally turn into a fifth-round pick. Johnson has been a disappointment for the Texans since his selection in the 2005 draft, and is best remembered for his angry response to Trent Green's low block that not only flipped the unsuspecting Johnson but also gave Green his second severe concussion in as many seasons.
I can't make an argument that Johnson would be a good fit for our defense, nor do I know much about him as a player. But I know as surely as I know that the earth is an oblate spheroid (it is NOT round) that we are desperate for DTs right now, and we have a recent history of taking a former first-round DT bust and turning him into a productive player, ala Damione Lewis.
So, at the low low asking price of a sixth round pick, would this have been a good move for us?

Thanks r3
Not sure he was a fit here…but it would have been nice to know if the Panthers pursued him. I bet the Texans called the Panthers to at least try and get a counter offer to take to the Chargers

I have a feeling...
…there will be other opportunities to acquire a DT that:
a) has comparable talent and won’t cost us a draft pick at all, or…
b) might cost us a higher draft pick, but net us a better player.
At least, the optimist in me decrees that it must be so. :-)
Meanwhile, the flat-earther in me takes exception to the notion that the Earth is an oblate spheroid. ;-P
Big props on using “oblate” in a sentence, though. ;-D

My vote is for the player X... that player.... Howard Green from the NY Jets
6’2" 320lbs
He got buried on the depth chart after they acquired Kris Jenkins from us, but he is a solid contributer when they stack the line.
2008 Stats:
Tackles 55
Sacks 1.0
Forced fumbles 2
He’s a run stopper who could be had for probably a 5th rounder. We have a deep trade history with the Jets and they have another NT in Sione Pouha who could fill the gap at backup.

Green just became a Jet this year
He played in Seattle last year. Doubt they would trade a new signee. :)
