Ravens vs. Panthers Preseason Game 3 Open Thread
Baltimore Ravens at Carolina Panthers, Aug 29, 2009 8:00 PM EDT
Conventional wisdom says the Panthers will play their starters well into the 3rd quarter of this preseason game at home against the Ravens. This is usually the last tune up before the season opener. Yet the ominous 'threat of injury' cloud hands over the Panthers as they have been without many key players. So how long will the starters play? I'm hoping they pull the starters after the 1st quarter but I imagine they will at least play the 1st half. The Panthers starting 11 on both sides of the ball is essentially set so I see no need to take further risk.
There is plenty to watch for even if the starters sit early. There's still the matter of the nickel corner spot. Will CJ Wilson hold his spot? Is Tyler Brayton still the starter at LDE? Has TE Gary Barnidge officially passed Jeff King as starting TE? The answers will be provided in the st quarter.
Then there is the bubble watch. Will rookie CB Captain Munnerlyn earn a spot? Will veteran PR Ryne Robinson reclaim his spot? Is there room for a player like LB J Leman? Some of these answers might come later at final cut downs but the story will continue tonight.
Lastly there is an AFC contender rolling into town tonight. The Panther offense will want to build on the positive aspects from last weeks game. The defense is still looking for players up front.
Let's get it on. This is now any Open Thread!

Go Panthers!
I’m watching from the home front in Charleston this week as the memory (or lack there of) of the Dolphins game at the bar has not worn off. We’ll take it a little easier this week.
But the Panthers better not. We need to see some spark from the defense! With Beason out lets see who steps up.

The season is slowly heating up!
unfortunatley I can’t watch the game live until nfl network plays it and I will only be able to follow the beginning of this game but still some is better than none.
GO PANTHERS!!!!!
I might have to watch the damn game online because stupid abc has to have 24 hour coverage of kennedys death/funeral/rising from the dead. I don’t give a damn about it and it is going to cut into me watching my Carolina Panthers play football!!!
And they are the only ones doing this crap. ABC 11 better switch from that to the game. I’ll call these assholes if I have to.

Why were people booing that call? At least that doesn’t give Jake a chance to throw an INT.

I could see using this preseason oppurtunity
to practice that kind of 4th down play

We really have to get another DT. That is a problem Fox can’t “It is what it is” away.

They're doing decently well against the run even so
Particularly without Beaston.
That was a pathetic bump at the line
He got tooled

I'm not happy
I think we’ve played well considering the players we’re missing. This game is going the way it is because of one bad no-call and one bad call.
TD Ravens 14-3 shortly
defense has not impressed at all. Sloppy play, soft zones, Some good plays here and there but overall not getting it done

Third Down conversions
Ravens – 4/5
Panthers – 0/4
Well not much positive to say about this half

wow, i knew they had alot of 3 & outs but i didnt think they went o-fur

My main hope is:
that Fox is playing it vanilla to give the Eagles the wrong thing to game plan.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Do we lack so much confidence in our safeties
we play 10 yds off the ball
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
BTW, Flacco is 22/27 for 240 yards and a TD. Not good #’s for the D.
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
I rate Flacco highly
But I don’t think that Fox has done much planning for this game. Things could be different.
flacco is very good at getting rid of the ball to avoid the sack
"one is the loneliest number that youll ever see"
3rd down completion rate was the Panthers issue last year

Phew!
I was gonna really lose it if Troy Smith lead them to a scoring drive.
Good play by Jarrett. Probably the best effort all preseason.
End of the 3rd. Think Jake will finish the drive?

313 yds by the Ravens after 3 qtrs...pathetic

I must say,
I like the attitude Fox is showing out there. He really wants to win this one. Also, Mike Goodson is looking like a 1st or 2nd round talent.
Not a good feeling
I know it’s the preseason, however; it would be nice to see the defense stop a team like Baltimore with it’s lack of top tier WR’s. I understand that Beason and Davis are not playing, but I don’t believe they will make that much more of a difference. As far as the offense, a few first downs and some receptions would be nice. Jaxon, I am looking forward to you or someone elses breakdown of this game. The only positives I noticed initially were Goodson and Brayton. This Panthers team does not look competitive and with a tough schedule they have to be. I know…it’s only the preseason, but I am concerned.
Linebackers
I’m not worried about. Beason and Davis is very crucial not only to our run defense but pass also. Beason is a big presence that would’ve stopped the run, and Davis is very versatile.
What worries me is our Cornerbacks. Gamble didn’t play like a starting corner and we let that ugly Flacco have about 250 passing yards. When Beason and Davis is back, our linebackers will be solid, but I think our DBs need to step up.
My thoughts !!
Hey so we loss again, no big deal b/c again you don’t gameplan for these games and we looked alot better on the defensive and offensive side of the ball. Plus you have to keep in mind we were playing the Ravens whom have a very good defense if not the best in the league. As for our backup QB situation I believe that it will be determined this coming Thursday against the Steelers. McCown played great tonite working with the first team for a change and we all know that Moore is a lock. Cantwell is going to be our PS QB this season so really that should be solved. Brayton is doing better, he needs to play more attention to the snap count and quite jumping offsides at key times. ROBINSON is gone, I don’t believe he even was on the field tonight. It just goes to so you in a tight game he is NOT trusted. So I believe he will be cut as soon as this Tuesday or whenever the first cuts are along w/ Salley and three others of whom we don’t now any names !! Again I think E. Brown did great he had his third str8 sack in the his third str8 game, hopefully he can keep it up. Our BIGGGESSSTTT Weakness is still run d-fence, but I am confident that if we don’t make a move after cutdowns then we will be screwed royally once the whistle blows for the Philly game.

Just got back from the game
Man it’s great to be back at that stadium again. I don’t care if it is just preseason either…..felt great to be there.
Anywho,, the Ravens definitely played our style of ball way better than us tonight. I believe we had the ball for 11 minutes in the first half when we received to start the damn half. That is just terrible…..we would have been terribly worn down by the 3rd+4th quarters had this been a regular season game. They wore us out.
What was the deal with Gamble? He did not bring his game today…..I think he got burned by Kelley Washington on that deep play (correct me if I’m mistaken). He got burned a couple of other times too and missed a tackle here and there. In other years that may have been overlooked but he is THE GUY now in terms of our CB’s so he needs to step up and play like it.
Kenny Moore……I’m starting to change my stance on him. I’ve always liked him but coming into this game I still thought the 3rd WR job was Jarrett’s to lose but it may be very much a toss up at this point. I got there early and Moore even looked great in warmups….stretching out and making a bunch of pretty difficult catches. He looked good. They are working Moore on PR and on kickoffs so he seems to add alot of value at this point in other areas too.
I loved the D-line that we put in for passing situations. We put Peppers and Brown at the DE and Brayton and C. Johnson at the DT’s. Brayton was causing alot of disruption from that DT spot tonight. He impressed me.
I do want to keep in mind that it is just preseason and we were missing alot of guys but at some point we just have to ignore that and put it all together on the field. Will we come out Week 1 firing on all cylinders after looking subpar in preseason? I sure hope so.
Kenny Moore
Did look pretty sharp. On the defensive side of the ball the dink and dunk passes completed by Baltimore were killer.
I think Kenneth Moore is one good game away from winning the #3 WR spot. The guy has outplayed Jarrett in every game this preseason. Jarrett’s only good play came last night when he got 10 yards and a first down.
But Moore has caught some good passes and has gotten some good yardage so far. He has definitely played better in my book so far. I think it is time to cut loose the Jarrett experiment.

Game 4 will be interesting
One would have to think that we’ll be looking at Jarrett and Moore starting at WR. Good chance for both of them to prove their metal, even with McCown or Moore starting.
