Around SBN: Newcastle Battle Injury Woes Ahead of Tottenham

At last!! Good news from the Panthers pre-season.

Well Panther fans lets address the elephant in the room.  We are hit with some serious injuries.  Kemo, Smitty, Beast-on, TD, and Godfrey are all starters to be bit by "the bug."  In John Fox's tenure, the only time's we have not had a winning/playoff season is when we were devastated by injuries.  But, hold on Chicken Little, the sky is not falling yet.

Star-divide

"Linebackers Thomas Davis and Landon Johnson returned to practice Monday after being out for extended periods with injuries."  - David Scott, Insider the Panthers

Also Smitty is expected to return for the Eagles game, if not sooner.  Beason could also return against the Eagles, but with Conner backing him up, we probably will not risk bringing The Beast back to early.  Godfrey has a broken hand, which is not a very serious injury.  Speculation is that he maybe able to play against the Eagles, but I think Teal has a shot at pushing Godfrey for pt when he does return from injury (Sadly, Teal is the one guy in the secondary who can catch the ball).

We have not looked too good this pre-season, but lets also put things into perspective.  We played both games on the road, without key players, against good teams who we will be playing later in the REAL . . . uh. . . regular season.  The one big area of concern is the loss of behemoth blocker occupier Maake Kemoeatu. There is also light at the end of the tunnel here.  Hurney and the Panthers FO has been reportedly interested in several DT's around the league, although are NOT offering future draft picks.

With all this said, I still think we are a playoff contender.  I encourage you to stay with me and not jump ship yet.  After all, we have only seen the team play in 2 practice games.  We still have potential All-Pro's in Gross, DeAngelo, Smitty, Beason, and Peppers.  Along with potential Pro Bowlers Otah, Kalil, Wharton, Beef Stew, TD, Gamble and others.  I will be at our first home game this Saturday 8/29 against the Ravens.  This should be another good, tough, and entertaining game which will help prepare us for this season's schedule.  I will watch the team with expectation and as always cheer "Go Panthers!!"

Everything's not rosy, though...

Even if a couple of these injuries slow us down on defense (and you’ve got to think the Kemo injury does, regardless of who we bring in)…opposing teams are going to run the ball right at us. And, if they’re successful doing that, they’ll control the clock. That keeps our (hopefully, still explosive) offense off the field as they put up points and put us behind. That usually forces teams (including us) to go away from the run game and use the passing game to conserve clock and catch up on the scoreboard…which is something our offense does NOT excel at doing. See the Arizona playoff game…

Now, it would be better if we had an easy schedule to begin the season. Then, we could rest our injured players and not worry so much about our defense letting us down and offense struggling to play catch up. But, unfortunately, we come right out of the gate with the Philadelphia Eagles…a good defensive team (especially vs. the run) and a good running team (with Westbrook)…and now a team with a new wildcard who has always vexed us (i.e., Michael Vick), regardless of how they use him. If we look bad in that game, it’s not going to hurt us going into the next one.

Because, after that, we face the Atlanta Falcons. At their place. It’s an early division game. They’ve got a monster RB (i.e., Michael Turner) that ran all over us in our last meeting. They’ve added future HOF’er Tony Gonzales and our LBs have always struggled to cover the TE position. Roddy White is signed and content. And they’ve improved their defense. They’re also going to try to take advantage of our weakened defense as early as possible. If we lose that game, we could be facing an 0-2 start and already a game down in the loss column against division opponents. Bandwagon fans would quickly start calling for Fox and Hurney’s heads…and Julius Peppers and Jake Delhomme while they’re at it.

But, after that, we have to face the resurgent Dallas Cowboys. At their place. On a Monday night. Typically, we look horrible against Dallas in the regular season. And we don’t play well in nationally-televised games, particularly on Monday nights. Don’t know why. It is what it is. Dallas has also jettisoned the one-man distraction known as T.O. They’re a lot more focused. They’re a decent run-defense team. They’ve got offensive weapons, including a good RB and a great TE. Sound familiar? If they study the film of how we defended Atlanta the previous week, they should find plenty of ways to exploit our weakened defense. And if we lose that game, we’ll be 0-3 and the finger-pointing and fan dissent will quickly put our entire season into a tailspin. And, perhaps even worse, we’ll be sitting at home with a bye in Week 4, so everyone will have 2 weeks to engage in that kind of “Woe is us!” mentality.

Now, I don’t mean to come across as all-negative. I’m just pointing out the potential “perfect storm” for things to go bad, bad wrong. In my opinion, our offense is still as potent as it ever was (all 11 starters are back, after all). We’ve lost depth across the O-line. We’re still struggling to find a decent WR3. But we picked up Goodson, who seems poised to make some good things happen for us and he can support the WR3 or WR4 or even RB2 positions. Hopefully, Jonathan Stewart also works out his Achilles problem. And we should all be praying Steve Smith can play through his shoulder injury.

But what really concerns me is the defense. We needed to improve there most of all, just based on our playoff loss to Arizona and how many points we gave up in the last 5 games of last season. That’s why the impact of losing Kemo can’t be understated. He’s our only DT with enough size to clog up holes in the middle. His play was what allowed Jon Beason to freelance and fly to the ball. And the middle of your defense is the shortest distance between an opposing RB and picking up first downs. If we can’t stop runs up the middle, we can’t stop opposing offenses from controlling the line of scrimmage, controlling the clock, and ultimately, controlling the game. If you layer on potential problems with Beason out as our MLB…and now our S position with a broken hand…the entire middle of the defense all the way into the secondary is potentially missing a starter. And that’s not good.

So, we really need to keep an eye on the Baltimore Ravens game coming up this weekend. Let’s see how backups like Dan Connor and Marlon Favorite and Quinton Teal and whoever else they play with the 1’s…all perform against the Ravens offense. If they can’t stop Baltimore through 3 quarters of play (i.e., when the starters are on the field), that should be a very clear indication that we’re in trouble. If they do okay, however, maybe we’ll be alright when the regular season starts. Whatever moves Fox and Hurney make in terms of the roster cutdown and pickups from the waiver wire after that game will also go a long way in determining our season.

But that’s just my two-cents,

Luckily...

We won’t actually have to face Vick in the regular season. Roger Goodell said that he could play by week 6 – which may be amended to let him play by WK3, but not WK1.

Other than that, I’m with you Neil. We have some problems that we can’t sweep under the carpet. Teams are going to try to run ALL day long at us. If our shambled Defense doesn’t pull it together we’re going to be in serious trouble. The Panthers are NOT a team that is build to come back from behind – though there are times we do. We’re a power rushing attack, not an aerial assault team. If our D can’t keep the opposing teams from scoring…it’s going to be a longggg season ;)

Good point about Vick...

…but part of me does wonder if that Week 1 game carries any distraction for our guys. Not because they’ll face him on the field. But rather the media circus of him being on the team. I wonder if many protestors will show up at BoA stadium on opening day?

I'm not sure they will

show since he won’t play…but they may just because the Eagles signed him

Valid points across the board.

I too am extremely worried about the loss of Kemo, however I have reserved judgement until we see what the FO does in bringing in another DT. On the same point, I do not think the Eagles are a team we need to worry about in this regard. They are too pass happy and Vick will not be able to play against us (most likely).

As for ATL and Dallas, they are big time power running teams with there OL, BIG RB’s (Turner/Barber), and quality change of pace RB’s (Norwood/Felix Jones).

I think we're all waiting...

After all, if Jon Beason can say they MUST bring in help for the DT position, that means him and his teammates are clearly worried about it. That can cause a lack of confidence…and a loss of chemistry…on the defensive side of the ball. And, again, if we come out cold and lose a game, or two, or three…it can quickly mushroom into something much, much worse.

Personally, I still think the Eagles will be a tough game for us. They may be a bit pass-happy…but against our weakened run-defense, they don’t have to be. And, even so, if they do go to the pass, a fair amount of that can flow through Westbrook on check-downs or designed screens and it could still eat us up. I wouldn’t favor us any of those first three games given what we’ve seen of this team so far…and the injuries they’re dealing with now.

But that’s just my two-cents,—Neil

You certainly could be right. Shoot, you probably are.

But I, for one, will not give up hope until I have to.

The Eagles don't run between the tackles much...or they haven't in the past

They might against the Panthers. They prefer to throw to them in the flat, run wide or dump off

True, but...

…they also do a fair number of over-the-middle passes to Westbrook, too. And they have run him up the middle before when they think they can manhandle another team. I expect Andy Reid and company will put together a serious gameplan to try and exploit us if we’re still using undersized DTs. The Eagles coaching staff does a pretty good job of outcoaching and out-gameplanning a lot of opponents.

In addition, the Panthers are pretty notorious for coming out flat in home openers. I really hope we don’t see that this season, but it would be like a carry-over from that Arizona playoff loss. And we really can’t afford a blow-up like that or we’ll be staring at a very confident Atlanta team the next week, and mounting pressure.

I really hope none of that comes to pass…and that we surprise the Eagles and take them down in Week 1. Then, if we can get up for our hated division rival and find a way to defend Michael Turner, Matt Ryan, and Tony Gonzalez…we could get up 2-0 going into the Monday night game at Dallas’ new stadium. A cascade of momentum from the Philly game all the way to 3-0 would be a HUGE confidence-builder going into our bye week. We rest up some guys, get everyone back at full-strength and then focus on the remainder of the season. That would be the perfect script from an optimistic perspective. But the odds of that happening vs. an 0-3 start aren’t quite as good, given our current situation and what we’ve seen out of the team so far…especially on defense.

How we play against Baltimore will factor into those odds as well

The Pitt game is pretty meaningless, for regular season purposes at least.

+1

Tomorrow night’s game against Baltimore is our first real look (at least for 2-3 quarters) of we’ll perform with the current crop of players we’ve got.

The offense should be pretty much the same…just with another year of experience together…since we’re returning all of the starters from last season. The only problem is injuries, of course. From Steve Smith’s shoulder to Jonathan Stewart’s Achilles and even Otah’s little ding to his knee from last week and now Deangelo’s knee. We also know the O-line depth is gone. No more Hangartner or Bridges or even Omiyale to step in for us.

The defense has a much bigger challenge, though. Ten of twelve starters are “back” despite the loss of Ken Lucas (no biggie, in my opinion) and Kemo (real big deal!). But now we’re dinged up among those starters already. I expect Beason’s knee will keep him out of the Eagles game…and maybe even the Atlanta game. This is where our LB depth pays off with Dan Connor backing him up, though…hopefully. Godfrey’s broken hand is also a factor, which is why they’re shuffling DBs around like the Keystone Kops right now.

And, honestly, even if we had ALL of our 11 starters ready to go on Week 1…it’s the same unit that had serious problems giving up points the last several games a year ago…including (but not limited to) the playoff loss. So, even if they were all healthy, would we be any better? I’d like to think so, but I don’t know. Personally, I feel like the biggest change (for the good!) is the wholesale turnover among the defensive coaching staff. Let’s see what Meeks and new secondary coach have in store for these guys. A lot of them have gotten leaner so they can run and “fly to the ball”…but so far in the preseason, I’ve seen lots of guys “flying” and then “crashing and burning” when they fail to wrap up the tackle. So they really need to show improvement against Baltimore on Saturday night.

But that’s just my two-cents (of course!),
