Five More Questions Regarding the Panthers
The News & Observer writer Charles Chandler poses five questions regarding the Panthers 2009 prospects following two preseason losses. The five are good questions that I'm going to add five more to:
Question 6: Who in the world is going to start at LDT in the season opener?
Panther rookie Marlon Favorite and Corvey Irvin show promise and should get in the rotation at least periodically. Neither player though has shown enough consistency or skill to be the season long solution. So if it's obvious the Panthers will need to bring in a veteran just exactly when will they do that? Will the Panthers give up a draft pick and/or player for a decent player or will they simply sign another teams' cast off? There is potential for the Panthers to overpay given the entire league knows they are in dire need.
Question 7: Who is the #3 wide receiver?
The word from camp is Dwayne Jarrett is finally showing his potential but in the first two games Kenneth Moore has outplayed him. Moore seems better suited for the slot than Jarrett while Jarrett still seems to be a year away (I'm being kind).
Question #8: Who is the #2 QB?
QB coach Rip Scherer said Matt Moore would get his opportunity and he played pretty good this past week. His stat was less than impressive but he stood in the pocket, showed some awareness and made a couple nice throws. It would appear at the moment though the competition with Josh McCown is still wide open.
Question #9: Is it time to get worried about RB Jonathan Stewart?
If he's going to be available for the season opener he needs to get into practice soon. Darin Gantt reported this morning that Stewart was still being held out. If he can't start participating in full practices by the end of the week you might want to prepare mentally for Mike Goodson to back up DeAngelo Williams in the season opener.
Question #10: Who will be the starting nickel cornerback?
CJ Wilson appeared to have the inside track but rookie Sherrod Martin is a 2nd round pick and 7th round rookie Captain Munnerlyn has impressed in man coverage. There was talk over the off-season Richard Marshall would move from the outside to the nickel and Wilson would play the outside but we haven't seen much of that so far. None of the above separated themselves from the pack as of yet.
After the next preseason game at home against the Ravens some of the answers to these questions might surface. Don't be surprised though if we don't get all the answers until the opener against the Eagles.

My humbles answers...
6. Favorite and Irvin are backups at best. Even Lewis is questionable in some situations. Either they sign a good DT or we will only win by shootouts this year.
7. Rosario. Either they implement more TE passing plays or no one other than Smitty or Moose will be catching balls.
8. We don’t have one. It’s Jake or bust again.
9. Stewart will play with pain like he did last year.
10. I want to say Wilson. But it looks like Munnerlyn will make the team to return kicks. Does this mean Martin could get cut? That doesn’t seem right.

Let me publicly say that I was wrong
I defended Peppers relentlessly, saying that his fat contract was worth it to keep him on the team… even if it meant little depth. I was dead wrong. We should have let Pep walk… kept some quality o-line depth, and addressed our d-line the way we did our o-line last year. Meaning taking to camp every fat DT out there that has something to prove… and maybe a couple DBs as well.

So...
If Pep is blocked by Jake Long and Everette Brown gets a sack on the guy, then will Brown be double-teamed and Peppers have to struggle against the 240-pound tight end? It’s a shame that teams won’t get to pass that much on us since they’ll be running through the middle of our line all day long at 8 yards an average pop.
Did you read Peter King’s column (Sports Illustrated?) He pretty much echoed my sentiment, that if Pep was as good as his agent’s hype, there would be a line outside his door, but as we all know, there was no line.
On another front – Is Kris Jenkins going to have his annual “I-ain’t-happy” fall off, now that he’s played a season for the Jets? It’s a shame we couldn’t keep that guy and have the trainer juice him regularly with anti-depressants.
I'm starting to think the same thing ST
I bet the Panthers do let him walk if he doesn’t sign a long term deal. Heck, they might even trade him at the deadline for a draft pick, who knows.

Or sooner for a DT and picks.
It has been said that the FO will not give up draft picks for a DT. So what will they give up? That is the only way I see us getting Dorsey from KC. But would he really fit Fox’s/our system? Fox wants guys to occupy blockers and Dorsey is a one gap penetrator, a la D-Lew.
I am not predicting Dorsey as the main target, just using him as an example.

But would anyone take on his contract?

Keeping Smitty and Moose out
5. I sure hope it was just the dirt.
6. I like the idea of finding the first 0-2 or 0-3 AFC team with an OK DT, and trade Pep for him and maybe a 2nd and 3rd.
7. That’s why the #1 and #2 are out – so the rest of the receivers can say they caught a pass this season. I’m hoping this makes Jake change his read progression from “89, 89, 87, 89” to “The corner came from the right, so there should be someone in the flat over there, let me check there….”
8. Moore in the ocasional spot start/mop-up. What is McCown’s upside? If Jake goes and pulls a Tom Brady, maybe McCown, but from a development standpoint, it’s Moore.
9. Radical thought – Put J-Stew on IR, and use Goodson and Flametta to rest D-Will.

Not if he can get healthy at any point this season
We will need Stewart this season and soon

I Wonder...
How many sacks it will take b4 Panther fans jump on the Pep bandwagon. I have a ton of respect for the people who post here (This has become my favorite Panther site) but I have a feeling that if Pep starts the season w/6 sacks in say, 3 games, there will be a ton of you guys who have been crying all off season, singing his praises and yelling about how smart Fox & Hurney were to tag him. The only person I know who won’t hop on even if Pep gets at least a sack a game and a total of 30 sacks, is Procton. I don’t always agree w/that guy but I give him credit for being consistant. (Even when he’s wrrong) ;-)
I defended him all off season
But now Im saying that even if he was to get 3 sacks every game this year, it won’t matter because we are so weak up the middle.

I'm with you ST
Even if Pep had signed for $12 mil a year that’s $5-6M left over to use on o-line and d-line depth. Plenty to go get an experienced vet. Pep is going to want to leave anyway when he starts getting the blame for all that is wrong in Carolina.

Secondary coverage hasn't been that bad either
Atleast I can’t remember allowing any big pass plays. And that has nothing to do with Pep rattling QBs. It’s just run defense and shabby tackling that’s killing us.

The poor tackling has been the biggest disappointment in my view
maybe the emphasis on gang tackling and trying to strip the ball is part of the cause

next game is key
There are too many lingering questions right now, but I’ll feel much better if our 1st team offense scores a few times against the Raven’s D. If Ravens play the way they did yesterday against the Jets, our offense will face yet another formidable opponent this preseason. With so many missing pieces in the defense, all we can do do is wait and watch for now.
Well we still haven't faced any top offenses yet
With Smitty back I think we can average 28 points(is that right?) again. I’m more worried about teams like NO putting up 40 on our D.

I'm worried about the Panthers this year...
I knew they would be weak up the middle, and even though it’s just preseason, that looks to be the case. Kemo would have helped this, but the lack of depth is mind boggling. I took extra time to watch the corners play vs the Dolphins, and it’s clear those guys cannot be left on an island with WRs all game. That’s really bad, considering the safeties will have to stack the box in run support. The offense isn’t built to win shootouts. I know the love a lot of you have for Jake (so I won’t beat that dead horse). Do you want Fox to be forced to put the game into the hands of Jake to play keep up, or catch up all season? Such a great OLine and set of RBs, but they don’t have the same value when down 2 touchdowns. I hope there are some cuts at DT that can help. Best of luck this season. Falcons/Panthers less than a month away in the Ga Dome!
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Are you talking about poor tackling with the corners?
Because they were very good in coverage. I don’t think any Miami receiver even made a single play. And the only deep ball caught was that Wildcat reverse back to Pennington… And that was caught by a running back. I could care less about that play because in a real game the defense would have a package for that.

The WRs had seperation, Pennington just can't make the throws...

And plus ATL's defense is not much better even with depth

I didn't really wanna get into an Atlanta/Carolina debate on this one...
Atlanta’s defense is about the same vs the pass and MUCH better vs the run.

Oh well I'm sure we ALL agree with that!...lol...yeah right
we shall see Nag. Even without Kemo we shall see!

I can agree for now
Because we are playing without an NT. But that will change Once they fill that spot and start getting more comfortable in a new system.
