Mike Mayock is Big on Panthers RB MikeGoodson

In Rich Eisen's own words, "Mike Mayock can evaluate NFL players like nobodies business".  So when asked who his best fantasy sleeper is, Mayock picked our very own Mike Goodson.  He claims Goodson is "a dominiative pocket rocket" and "a good football player who was a great steal".  You can hear his evaluation in the video below.  However you have to first sit through Rich's infatuation with his proclaimed "Touchdown Machine" aka DeAngelo Williams...

Check the video here

Also interesting he hints at Jonathan Stewart's injury claiming Goodson might get more touches than you think at running back.  More and more reports are getting me worried about Stewart, and increasing my admiration of DeAngelo's durability.  If JStew is out for any extended period this year then Goodson just might be a life saver... Let's just hope those strip drills in camp are working.

Good and Bad

I like the fact that someone other than a Panther fan sees some serious play making ability in Goodson. I do not like what Mayock said about Beef Stew. I think Goodson is a playmaker, but we would lose a lot if Beef Stew is not able to go in any game we play.

Yea hopefully he gets back soon

He is an important player in the backfield. Having Goodson is like having another younger version of Deangelo Williams, (i know that sounds great and all but) we need someone to pound the ball in there. Whenever i see williams trying to do that i get worried that hes gonna get hitsticked real bad. hes what 5’9 217. Jonathan stewart is bulky and has 20 more pounds on him. I don’t know if we can rely on our inside running game when its 3rd and 2

Can Beef Stew "pound the ball"?

I know we assume he can because of the way he dragged and stiff-armed CBs and Safeties to no end. But I don’t remember him plowing through tackles the way a back like Jacobs does. Do you?

Whoa whoa..

no one is comparing him to Jacobs but i’m just saying if we have a RB that can break tackles up the middle, it should be him because even though hes not as big and Jacobs, he’s the biggest RB we have.

Stew = Pounder

Even though his most memorable runs from last year where usually cuts to the outside, I can’t recall any goal line situations where he was denied.

I can't remember any where DeAngelo was denied either

How much of that was our o-line?

Short yardage back?

This is my first comment, but I’ve been reading for awhile. Awesome site — great information. Anyway, I’d love to see what Fiammetta can do on 3rd and 2.

Yes and he will get more than 2.

I hate FB’s getting TD’s in a fantasy sense but I hope we utilize him on the goal line in 2 or 3 yard scenarios.

I think DeAngelo could be a solo feature back, BUT . . .

what makes our running game sooo dangerous is the fact that we have 2 absolute studs at RB.

We have one of them in for a few plays and then we bring in the other who is rested and chomping at the bit to get at the defense. Mean while, the defense is having a hard time stopping just one of them and it makes it close to impossible to lock down both of them in an entire game.

Also, and IMO, the most important reason for having both of these studs is to prevent overall wear and tear on either of them. Neither of them have to carry the rock 370+ times like Peterson or Turner, thus they are fresher than the average stud once the end of the season rolls around. This maybe a big reason for our late success last year.

As for DeAngelo being able to be a solo feature back with his size think of this, He weighs the same as Adrian Peterson, but is 5 inches shorter. I was about 15 yards away from him, Beef Stew and the other RB’s at a TC practice and let me tell you, D-Lo and Beef Stew have trees for legs. I am not just talking about their thighs, but also their hips and calves too. I would love to know what they do (lbs/kgs) for a squat work out.

goodson is like connor

It doesn’t matter how good he is if he can’t get on the field. Goodson is a playmaker, and Connor is a tackling machine…when he gets to play. I believe if Goodson gets on the field, he’ll prove Mayock right.

From SI

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The NFL has fined Carolina Panthers running back Mike Goodson $7,500 for making a throat slash gesture after scoring a touchdown in Monday’s exhibition game against the New York Giants.
Goodson turned to the crowd following his 14-yard TD run in the second half and put his hand to his throat. He was immediately called for a 15-yard taunting penalty. The NFL fined him Friday for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Hopefully he learned not to do that in an actual game. Foxy was talking to him on the sidelines, doing just that I presume in the game. The guy can be a beast if he fixes his fumble issues and not do stupid things like that.

$7500 for a throat slash gesture?

Geez…that hurts for a rookie. How much of his signing bonus would that be? A 4th rounder gets a pretty good one so I guess not too bad but… didn’t he pay off his moma’s house with his bonus? His moma is gonna be mad!

Man, you can just imagine...

Think about it – that practice field is those guys’ place of work -

The conversation all week long with Goodson, the Rookie, must have been “Hold the ball, don’t do anything stupid, hold the ball, don’t do anything stupid, hold the…”

I mean seriously. Do you remember the movie “Friday Night Lights” where the dad duct-tapes the ball to his fumbling son’s hands? This week could not have been so far off that for Goodson.

by Barbados on Aug 21, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t understand what the big deal about that really is. Yeah, it can be construed as unsportsmanlike, but to fine him $7500 for it??

A little excessive compared to the lame ass penalties they hand down to guys who kill people while they are drunk, or felons for that matter.

Endzone cellebrations are no longer allowed

Especially one that represents cutting somebodies throat. Plus, Goodson needs to be humbled out before he starts getting his number called a lot.

And Stallworth was suspended for the entire season without pay. How is a simple fine excessive compared to that?

I feel that someone who kills somebody else WHILE DRUNK should never be allowed back into the NFL. I do not like the idea of felons being allowed back into the NFL either. It shows younger kids that it is ok to go out and do something really bad because NFL players can do it and get away with it. The league is supposed to be a role model like agency, and right now, with someone new every day getting arrested for DUI, DWI, or some other stupid ass thing, they are the model of WHAT NOT TO DO. Would you be able to go back to wherever it is you work if you served 20 months in prison? If so, please tell me what it is.

Second chances are great, but I don’t like them for people who commit excessive crimes.

I’m not trying to get into an argument with you here on this. Just trying to tell you how I fell about all of this bad behavior in the NFL today, and how the NFL seems, to me, to drop the ball on everything.

And I do agree with you on Goodson being humbled. I think Fox drilled that into his head on the sidelines after the play.

I would point you to other threads here, and don't wish to revive the discussion...

BUT…

There are many reasons why Stallworth’s sentence was so light, up to and including a letter from the victim’s family to the judge seeking mercy on his behalf.

Stallworth is not a dangerous criminal. Our taxpayer funded prison system should be reserved for dangerous and violent criminals unfit for life in normal society, not for remorseful one time offenders who cooperated fully and had no prior criminal record. The judge made the right call by sentencing Stallworth to less jail time and a lot more community service time. This way, instead of being a drain on society in prison, he has the potential to use his status as an NFL player to do good for the community and truly “pay back his debt”

Rookie mistake

That TD could easily have gone to his head. But after all this I’m sure he has been humbled. DeAngelo needs to take him under his wing like he did Ear Muscles last year.

we need to sign Deangelo long term

I know alot of people love Stew and Goodson, but I think we need to lock up Deangelo for years to come, soon. I’ve heard people say he’s not that good, its our o line, its Stews help, he was a fluke, he won’t be worth what is current value is. Wrong. The dude has matured and came in to his own. His goals go something like this; stay healthy, help the team win, help young players develop. This guy is the most underrated player in the league, bar none. His stat line from his only year starting is All-Century. 20tds,1500 yds in 273 carries(5.5), “0” I mean 0 fumbles. You give him the rock 20 times, he will give you 100 yds and a TD. He doesn’t have the hype of the other 2 guys. But if we let him get away next year because people love Stewarts stiff arm or Goodsons speed, it will be our fault (thefans) for not hyping his maturity, humbleness, and durability.

Our o-line makes him better

Especially with those short yard situations. He’s not going to power through tackles without the o-line or a fullback creating space… But few backs can anyways. However as Gruden pointed out, there is a lot he does on his own… breaking tackles, making people miss and most importantly protecting the ball!

I agree with you. Lock him up long-term. There is no guarantee Stewart will be as good as DeAngelo, or that he can even hold up for an entire season. He has yet to even make it through an off-season injury free!

love goodson and stew but....

williams is are number uno rb, 20 tds last season most in nfl. Above 15 tds with a 5.5 yards a carry only two rb’s to do that jim brown and the last to do it 1976 oj simpson. So in my eyes he’s the man.

by caniacpanther on Aug 22, 2009 12:45 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How do you

Lead the league in TDs, average 5.5 ypc and not make the probowl? That should be MVP considerations.

I know, I know… It’s a small market, he came on late… but still! Arguably the best RB in the league last year got 0 recognition.

by southtunnel on Aug 22, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was absolutely ridiculous. Like you said, anyone else with numbers like that would have been included in MVP talk. Everyone was so high on Michael Turner and the guy had like 100 or so more carries and less TD’s than D-Will. And D-Will never fumbled, and only had like a 150 yards less than Turner.

He got shafted last year. I hope that doesn’t happen again this year.

Blame the fantasy football craze.

It’s occurred to me that, since so much player analysis is based on who to select on one’s FF team, that D-Will gets downgraded on the list of top RB’s — on the fallacy that he splits carries with Stewart.

Had Williams been our sole feature back, and just attained the same gaudy numbers that he had last year — he would’ve been more highly regarded. But half or more of the talking heads on TV/radio are ranking RB’s on FF value, and not on their importance to their teams.

Does that make any sense?

by bigdavis on Aug 22, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In certain default leagues

My league has been going strong for almost a decade now and our league is QB heavy but then feature backs will get you the bonuses for yardage. You feel more comfortable with a 30 carry back than a 20 carry back. If the game is going well for Stew or Goodson, why take either one out? When a player is hot, you give them more touches. I will be able to get D Will with the 16th (last pick) in the first round. It is the MoJo scenario. Fred Taylor leaves, MoJo is featured, you take his last year stats and at least times it by 1.5. It makes for a good yardage and TD’s. D Will is a steal in any league where people will go for players like MoJo, AP, Forte, or Jackson. But D Will gives us more than numbers, he is helping us out with Goodson and Stewart and will be very valuable to our team this year in our quest to recapture the South.

I think he will be top 5 in default leagues

But he will fall out of the top 12 in my league since some elite QB’s will be taken first but RB wise, top 5 no doubt.

by GMallory on Aug 23, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Makes no sense...

Considering that D-will put up THOSE kinds of numbers sharing carries with Stewy. A tandem back system, where one of the backs goes for 20 TDS, 1500+ yds, and a 5.5 ypc average (and the other half of the 2-headed monster nearly gets 1000 yds, and has 10TDs) and NO love from the ProBowl or MVP considerations.

Weak sauce man…

by boywonderncsu on Aug 27, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well D-Will didn't go off until about halfway through the season

voting was already started by then. Portis was killing early on, which is why he made it in ahead of DeAngelo.

by Flowing Willow on Aug 28, 2009 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep...

…and it’ll be interesting to see how the voting goes this year if Deangelo continues his success. Now, a lot more people know about him than before. And his preseason runs have been just as impressive as how he left off last year.

by NSpicer on Aug 28, 2009 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the thrill of D Will

how many games did D Will miss from injury last year?
how many times did D Will fumble last year?
how many yards per run does D Will average?
how many touchdowns did the MAN score? (how many over 30yrd runs!)
Some may be able to match one or two of those stats, but the overall package was the best in the league last year. Do you think he has peaked yet? The only problem for numbers is, with the other talent, maybe he doesn’t get the touches? I can’t wait to see Stew steamrolling some mofos, but if they don’t feature DeAngelo they are foolish!
….only offensive player to do well against Giants first team (liked Kenneth Moore too)
