Since this is my first film review in a while let me explain something first. I don't have any special blimp film I'm reviewing. It's simply the NFL Network replay that I taped from earlier today. I call it ‘film review' simply to better describe what I'm doing. For the key plays of the game I might review it 10 times before moving on, each time focusing on a single player trying to diagnosis exactly what happened. Also in this type of review I try not to rehash the obvious stuff already discussed in depth. I only focus on the 1st half for the obvious reasons as half the guys playing the second half will see little action come game Sunday. I'll start with a summary of my conclusions and then get into the detail.

  • If Kemo's replacement is already on the roster it's going to be Marlon Favorite or Corvey Irvin. Both players looked fairly stout at times and gained penetration into the backfield. I don't have a favorite yet, or do I? (pun intended).
  • WR Kenneth Moore did have a nice game, something I overlooked in my initial review. So much so I'm moving him up to #3 WR in my unofficial depth chart. He displayed the whole package, good routes, nice hands and the ability to run after the catch
  • I saw nothing from WR Dwayne Jarrett to make me think this is his year to get it together.
  • I'm more worried now about RB Mike Goodson's ability to hang onto the ball. His first fumble was complete stupidity as he extended the arm he was holding the ball with. The 2nd fumble came after taking a big hit, something he better get used to.
  • I'm souring even more on S Charles Godfrey after his serial poor tackling. If S Quinton Teal continues to impress we might have a shake up in the secondary.
  • RT Jeff Otah better not miss a game as his slated back-up Geoff Schwartz displayed matador blocking repeatedly.

Star-divide

Here's the details I noted:

1st Offensive series (1-O): The drive stalled on the two bad passes from Jake. WR Moore was very open for a nice gain on the 2nd one but was overthrown. Not much else to say on this one.

1st Defensive Series (1-D): The giants killed this drive themselves with a key penalty and a dropped pass.

2-O: LT Jordan Gross got cooked by Osi leading to the fumble that Gross thankfully recovered. It killed the drive.

2-D: S Godfrey missed the tackle two straight plays, first on the WR screen and then on the Bradshaw TD run. I will give the Giants props for perfect execution on both of these plays. On the TD run, DT Hayden got tossed aside as he bit on the counter fake. This is a good example of missing Kemo. Kemo would not have been tossed and instead more than likely prevented the pulling guard from getting a clean block on Beason. Also, DE Brayton got handled by the TE, another reason this play went big.

3-O: As someone on the blog said before, WR Jarrett was tipping off the CB by looking for the ball way too soon. He turned his head five steps before the ball came giving the DB time to react. It's his 3rd season and he still can't run a back shoulder fade, a Panther staple? Moore on the other hand sold the deep route, dug to the right and picked up a 3rd and long with nice YAC. When the drive stalled I noticed DE Hilee Taylor was the first to pressure the returner, something he did again later.

3-D:  CB CJ Wilson got a hands to the facemask penalty and still didn't prevent the catch. Wilson did nothing special in this game. Later DE Charles Johnson lost containment when he spun inside (was someone else supposed to rotate outside I wonder?) allowing QB Carr to run for a 1st down.

4-O: WR Moore has a very nice catch in traffic and took a hit but held on to the ball. WR Carter then had his epic drop and followed up with a short-arm drop. The announcer said McCown missed him but it looked to me like he short-armed it. On this series I'm also pretty sure OL Mackenzie Bernadeau was playing center even though he is listed 3rd string. After making a nice catch in the flat and picking up a 4th down conversion Goodson made a rookie mistake and put the ball on the ground. Never, ever reach out away from your body with the ball hand!

4-D: DB Sherrod Martin made a nice play on the ball in tight coverage and knocked it away. On a 4th down conversion attempt, Hayden, Favorite and LB Mortty Ivy all had penetration into the backfield to stop the RB short.

5-O: This drive ended quickly with a sack and fumble due to RT Schwartz matador block. His foot work is horrid in pass protection.

5-D: On the screen play and TD right before the half I looked and looked for someone to blame but it was simply a perfect play call against the Panthers inside blitz. I could maybe fault LB Dan Conner for not recognizing it, or maybe DE Charles Johnson.

6-O: On the single remaining play of the half Goodson made a nice run only to take a shot to helmet and drop the ball. The Panthers recovered and let the clock expire. He obviously shook it off over the break given his stellar play after the half.

great post

This kind of analysis is why I love the CSR. People who recently joined the CSR will definitely appreciate this kind of analysis. It helps when we look at our season, who sucks and who doesn’t. For example, after last year, I thought Godfrey was our starting safety for the next ten years…we found the answer. Nowhere besides this blog to I find analysis that breaks down his positives and negatives in detail. It’s one thing to say we got run over for 300 yards (last year vs. Giants), it’s another to break down who bit the fakes, who failed to recognize the play, and who was out of position…or when the analysis recognizes that we simply called the wron gdefensive play or formation. I love this kind of analysis and look forward to it all year.

Last year, Little King was doing a Keys to the Game or something like that before every game. Anyone heard from him lately?

Also, if Tavares Jackson gets cut, would he be a better fit than Moore or McCown as a back-up? What do you think?

by usana_gaines on Aug 20, 2009 6:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Vikings are reportedly asking for a 7th rounder for Jackson, and want to move him by Friday

I think he would be a steal at that price. I just don’t know what his contract looks like for a potential cap hit.

You feel that strongly Jaxon?

I think a 7th rounder is a paltry price for Tavaris Jackson. I don’t like him as a starter, but in his 5 games as a starter last season he threw 9TD / 2INT and had a 95.7 RTG. I think he’d be a very cheap backup.

by James The Aussie on Aug 20, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I asked in a previous thread who was going to be the first person to mention the Panthers should try and get Jackson, Rosenfels or Booty and we have our answer.

I think we should save all the draft picks and cap money we have to shore up the DT if one becomes available. A backup QB is a luxury as long as the run defense has a huge hole in the middle.

by bengoodfella on Aug 20, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see your reasoning

but I was never impressed watching him. Wonder what his price tag is? He doesn’t seem much of an upgrade over McCown except for the mobility aspect. If Minny has lost confidence in him there must be no upside left. A 7th is cheap but you get what you pay for

Great analysis Jaxon

I feel vindicated that alot of my inital opinions match yours when I broke down the film. I completely agree with Kenneth Moore. He went pretty much undiscussed over here, but his route running was crisp, he caught the ball in traffic and wasn’t afraid to go over the middle.

Any idea what kind of speed he has? Is he a deep threat.

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Aug 20, 2009 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His combine:

40 yd-4.51 (13th at combine)
20 yd-2.61 (17th at combine)
10 yd-1.53 (6th at combine)
Vert-28" (28th at combine)
Broad-10’00" (17th at combine)
Shuttle-4.3 (17th at combine)
Cone-7.09 (18th at combine)

It seems that his poor vert, cone times and size probably hurt him alot. He had solid speed in line with 2nd and 3rd rounders for his 40 and his 10 yd dash time was very, very quick. The 10yd time is really handy for a slot reciever on slant routes and drags over the middle. Guess what he had success with on Monday? Slants and drags.

I think the kid could be a hidden gem.

answer

this response to jaxon’s question is very thorough and i like it. as a #3 in our offense, he’ll often be lined up against a LB or a nickelback, so he doesn’t need Smitty speed, just enough to make a couple good grabs a game.

just 3-4 would be great

essentially what he provided against the Giants. If Jake had hit him on the wheel route on the first series Moore would have had a nice line for the night. I think there is a reason he was the first guy we saw in the 3 WR sets.

Gruden

I missed a really funny comment from Gruden the first time but caught it on the replay. When they did a short profile on WR Steve Smith (ours) Gruden said he calls Smith ’Freddy Kruger" because he scares the hell out of him twice a year. Very funny coming from a guy called Chucky!

Also referring to Smith's abilities Gruden says..

“And I’ve got the scars to prove it”. Man I hated Gruden til Monday night. He was very entertaining, and gave the Panther’s endless props. He was even making arguments for why DeAngelo is the best back in the NFL, even better than Adrian Peterson.

my thoughts

I’ve been thinking that for awhile. honestly, i didn’t see anything that you could point that makes AP definitely better than D-Will. I think D-Will and AP are the two best in the league, and J-Stew could be in the top 5 with more PT this year.

One thing stops DWill from being the best

Humility, which is also his strength. He’s not going to boast or brag, and therefore gets overlooked. But if he repeats 08, he is definitely going to turn some more heads.

Godfrey

I keep saying that Godfrey has upside. I really still do believe he is our starter fo most of the next decade unless injuries or drafts. I think that he is raw still but is our best bet to hold down the spot. I don’t believe that Teal will take the spot but he is showing enough to be a legitimate backup for Godfrey and it makes me feel safe when Charles needs a breather. I do like Joe Fields and Nate Salley but one of them is destined for a PS spot. I am NOT a fan of Harris though. It is hard to review his play when he didn’t do ANYTHING but it I think seeing him standing around the pile and not being able to stop some of the longer runs by over committing and not containing is a bad sign about our ability to stop the run at the higher levels if it gets there. I would love to get Martin or Teal some time at Harris’ SS position but they do not feel comfortable at that side. I think we have seen what Harris has to offer and he is mediocre when we need to plan for the future and know that someone will become an upper tier player at the SS spot. I hope Fields and Salley can push Harris and make him play at a higher level

by GMallory on Aug 20, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Godfrey? Next ten years?

Mike Minter would be pissed. Godfrey cannot tackle…That is an important thing to do on defense, especially in his case where he is the last line to stop the long gain. Harris had a bad game but he is usually a reliable tackler. I had high hopes for Godfrey last year. But unless i see better of him, im switching my hopes to Quinton Teal, although im not really sure how he did. Or where he has been in the past, or even his number. Wait who is quinton teal? is he any good?

I'm not saying ditch the guy

he’s a tremendous athlete who could still be a great FS but at this point in time he’s being outplayed by his back-up. A coach who wants to win now would make the change if he sees it too. It might provide the wake up call to Godfrey to work on his tackling

Nice post Jaxon. The thing about that game is that it was only one game. We all got good impressions and very bad impressions from players. This game against Miami and our 4th game (against the Steelers I think?) will tell us how good our backups are and who can challenge for a starting position.

My guess after this game and from what I saw would be (Please Note: this is only if those who played well continue to play well):

OL: Schwartz is not as good as I thought he would be. The guy is not a quality backup by any means. Could be cut.
QB: Delhomme disappointed me and McCown disappointed me. However Moore and Cantwell I thought did well, given the fact that the OL around them sucked at times and led to turnovers. I can easily see Cantwell going to the PS.
RB: I think we are set here for a long while.
TE/FB: Liked what I saw out of Barnidge. Rosario though will probably be cut to fit Fiammetta on the roster. Speaking of Fiammetta, didn’t see much on him, which could be a good or bad thing.
WR: Both Jason Carter and Dwayne Jarrett were extremely disappointing. Carter was expected to make amazing catches while Jarrett was expected to run routes and neither did what they were supposed to do. Moore on the other hand looked good, and he is on his way to getting that 3rd WR spot. I think the Cats could either end the Carter or Jarrett experiment this year.

DL: Everette Brown did well in his first game. His spin move is raw, but can be worked on and could be a deadly move on some linemen. For DT, Nick Hayden is not the answer. Favorite had a good game and Irvin is a work in progress. I think we might see Hayden either get cut or sent to the PS to make room for a veteran DT.
LB: Best group on the D right now and the deepest. If Leman and Ivy continue to play well, and Diggs and especially Landon Johnson (who is injured) do not, my prediction is that one or both may be trade and/or cut to get a veteran DT. Leman was very impressive and Dan Conner is a natural football player.
CB: Sherrod Martin needs to learn to look for the ball. Allowing a 3rd and 17 to be converted is not going to get you into an NFL roster.
S: If Quinton Teal continues to play well, Charles Godfrey may well find his job in jeopardy. Teal could force Godfrey into a CB position, due to Teal’s seemingly good ability to intercept a ball, something this team had problems with last year.

Fiammetta had one good play

..that I recall — there may have been more.

He picked up the FD on 3&2, I believe it was. It would take some hits away from DeAngelo if the defense had to respect our FB on a quick handoff once in awhile.

Hoover’s a great blocker (great!!) and won’t be unseated easily, but I can almost hear the faint sounds of Tonnnnnnnyyyy.

How did his Fiametta's blocking look?

I agree. I love Hooov, but Fiametta is looking like he could be a more complete FB. How did his blocking compare to Hoover?

by southtunnel on Aug 21, 2009 12:04 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Hoover is a bulldozer.

Fiammetta will need a year, IMO, before he could come close to the effectiveness of Hoover in run blocking.

Every successful run that Williams or Stewart made last year was through a hole that Hoover first occupied, then cleared.

And it’s more than just strength, or even technique — it’s the uncanny ability to size up the defense as they’re coming at you, and you’re going at them, and know who, and how, to move out of the way. Our RB’s are good partly because they hit the hole without hesitation — and Hoover’s GREAT because he creates that hole, after and as the OL make their blocks.

I urge you to — in games to come — try to avoid watching the ball carrier, and instead see how Hoov does his work. It’s beeoootiful.

Since there are no Larry Csonka rushing FB’s in the league anymore, I think Hoover should be All-Pro. And since they generally award that spot to a veteran (for career service), this could be his year. (IMO)

S is my position I will be locking into next game

I like looking at one position and evaluating it. With S Godfrey will bounce back but Teal will still push. One INT against a second or third team offense is impressive but not worthy of an immediate move. He got one interception. Woooo. He will get a look by Fox to see how they can utilize him more but I don’t see much more into him moving into Godfrey’s spot.

Teal was also getting INT's on a daily basis in TC

Hence my prediction he would get one is the game. And if you watch the play Teal actually circled around the WR watching the QB the whole time and he broke on the ball immediately. Yes it was Woodson at QB and he telegraphed it to a degree but still a nice play.

by GMallory on Aug 20, 2009 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're both right about Teal

One exhibition game INT (against a sub QB who was lost on the play) doth not a substitution make.

But his positioning and moves on the play were those of a top level safety. He was in command of the play well before the ball got there, and showed agility on the runback. He was looking for the endzone, not the sideline.

by bigdavis on Aug 21, 2009 6:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Godfrey to CB

I wonder if they would consider moving Godfrey to the nickel and using Martin or Teal at the FS spot. Godfrey seems to have a nose for the ball but not the physicality to tackle most ballcarriers in the open field alone. Martin looked to be very physical, but looked lost trying to cover when the ball was in the air. I don’t know. They both are fast enough to contribute though.

I actually like that idea

I thought of that one myself but you justified it better. To me, it is too soon to the season to make that switch. I think the only way that happens is an injury this season. But for the future I think that would be an excellent move.

eh..

He’s a good enough FS. I think most of those guys are out there playing things a little safe right now, once we get to the real games a switch will be thrown.

Godfrey is a FS all the way. In college, he didn’t allow a single TD in front of him, it’s when the play is behind his back that he struggles. To me, that screams Safety instead of QB.

Actually Gamble came off a block, which seems to me to be the reason he was too high on the pitiful tackle attempt.

Bradshaw is 5’9" 200lbs running at full speed at a CB who had just shed a block. Godfrey however was unblocked and COMPLETELY whiffed.

Wasn't this the best time for us to face NYG?

One of the toughest running games and defenses in the league??? We need to get slapped around now, so we have time to adjust. Most of the other NFC South teams faced softer opponents. Let them go ahead and start the season over confident, while we start with our weaknesses already addressed.

There are a few things I would like to see.

1. I want to see Jake Delhomme show off his arm. The passes he made during the Pre-Season were short completions to the sidelines, some of them lollipops that any corner could have intercepted in press coverage. Jake looked panicky, and he didn’t really concentrate or try to throw beyond the 1st down marker. I’d love to see him convert a couple of 3rds.

2. Open competition between Dan Conner and Na’il Diggs. Conner has already secured the 4th linebacker spot by a large margin, but I would like to see him sprinkled into the 1st team offense just to see how he meshes with the rest of the group. Maybe switch him out with Diggs the next game and the 4th game so that you got a decent amount of film, and then the coaches can watch it and make an intelligent decision on whether to go with the young rookie or the old veteran.

3. More production from Martin. We drafted Sherrod in order for him to take over at nickel corner, but we didn’t see much of him during the game.

4. Ryne Robinson needs to stop being a panzy. Players are going to run at you during special teams. That’s just how it is. I saw him down the ball too many times during the game last week. I can understand that it’s the Pre-Season, and you don’t want to get hurt. At the same time, this is football. The blocking can’t always be perfect. Unless you have a guy right in your face, try to juke. You’re a punt returner, so return the punts.

5. Jonathan Stewart. We’re all worried about him by now. John Fox and his staff have a reputation for giving the least information out to the fans as possible. Is Jonathan’s Achilles really just sore, or is it a deeper injury we all don’t know about? Mike Goodson had a good showing, and he will provide a good change of pace back in the meantime, but fans would love for Stewart to return so we can form the fearsome threesome combo.

I’ll add more when I think of them.

I have some corollaries

1. Better protection from the offensive line. The Giants gave way better than expected preseason pressure, and Jake looked like he just wanted to get rid of it. I don’t want anyone injured, but we need to see some decent passing. Let’s start with giving our QBs enough time to get set and throw.

2. Run Connor with the first team and Leman with the two’s. Both need extensive special teams opportunities. Give Diggs the night off, we might want to cut him for cap room anyway.

3. See how Munnerlyn does at nickel with the first team.

4. Let Captain handle return duties too.

5. Start Stewart, rest Williams. We know he’s ok, it’s time to bang some rust off.

Agreed

Also he is good. We can feel safe with him. I would like the next generation to start but sometimes we use spots on roster for mentoring. I think whether Conner comes into the first eventually is all up to him. Diggs will be Diggs and produce. Conner can learn a lot from Diggs and Johnson but it is more likely that Conner will come in when Diggs needs a breather.

"Never, ever reach out away from your body with the ball hand!"

(…unless you’re extending over the goal line or the pylon.)

I’d imagine this mistake would be fairly easy for Goodson to unlearn. Let’s hope the second is, too. Foster drove us crazy with these errors.

Good point. I hope to see Goodson’s ball-carrying and celebration skills improved, to match his running instincts.
