Panthers Release Depth Chart with a Few Surprises
Panthers.com has now posted a depth chart and it has a few surprises worth discussing. I agree it doesn't mean too much at this point but I think it does reflect some things we have already seen in Training Camp. Let's start with the offense:
Offense:
WR1 — Steve Smith, Ryne Robinson, Jason Carter, Kevin McMahan
LT — Jordan Gross, Patrick Brown, Mackenzy Bernadeau
LG — Travelle Wharton, Jonathan Palmer, C.J. Davis
C — Ryan Kalil, Justin Geisinger, Mackenzy Bernadeau, Keith Gray
RG — Keydrick Vincent, Duke Robinson, Justin Geisinger
RT — Jeff Otah, Geoff Schwartz, Gerald Cadogan, Garry Williams
TE — Jeff King, Gary Barnidge, Dante Rosario, Andrew Davie
WR2 — Muhsin Muhammad, Dwayne Jarrett, Kenneth Moore, Marcus Monk
QB — Jake Delhomme, Josh McCown, Matt Moore, Hunter Cantwell
FB — Brad Hoover, Tony Fiammetta
RB — DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Mike Goodson, Decori Birmingham
- In spite of the high praise sent his way in TC C/G Mackenzy Bernadeau is still 3rd string at center and is not listed at guard anywhere. He is instead listed 3rd string at LT (huh?). Justin Geisinger is #2 at center and has obviously improved his stock given he can play multiple positions.
- T Gerald Cadogan is listed as 3rd string RT behind Geoff Schwartz. Patrick Brown is slated as Jordan Gross back-up on the left side where I thought Cadogan would compete. This doesn't bode well for Cadogan.
- TE Gary Barnidge has passed Dante Rosario (no surprise there)
- WR Ryne Robinson remains ahead of Jason Carter.
Defense:
LDE — Tyler Brayton, Charles Johnson, Everette Brown
LDT — Nick Hayden, Marlon Favorite, Lonnie Harvey, George Hypolite
RDT — Damione Lewis, Corvey Irvin, Lorenzo Williams
RDE — Julius Peppers, Everette Brown, Hilee Taylor, Casper Brinkley
OLB1 — Na’il Diggs, James Anderson , Landon Johnson, Kelvin Smith
MLB — Jon Beason, Dan Connor, Jeremy Leman
OLB2 — Thomas Davis, Mortty Ivy, Anthony Heygood
LCB — Chris Gamble, Dante Wesley, Captain Munnerlyn
RCB — Richard Marshall, C.J. Wilson, Sherrod Martin, D.J. Clark
SS — Chris Harris, Nate Salley, Joe Fields
FS — Charles Godfrey, Quinton Teal, Paul Chiara
- The biggest surprise here is LB James Anderson is listed above Landon Johnson. Cutting Johnson might save some cap space if Mortty Ivy can fill the #7 back-up LB spot.
- DE Tyler Brayton is still listed over Charles Johnson
- DT Corvey Irvin is slotted behind Damionne Lewis at RDT and not LDT. It looks like until a vet DT is brought in Nick Hayden and Marlon Favorite will battle for the Kemo's spot.
Special Teams:
K — John Kasay, Rhys Lloyd
P — Jason Baker, John Kasay
H — Jason Baker, Josh McCown
PR — Ryne Robinson, Larry Beavers, Captain Munnerlyn
KR — Ryne Robinson, Mike Goodson, Larry Beavers
LS — J.J. Jansen
- Robinson is still getting the benefit of the doubt in kick returns. Beavers over Munnerlyn so far and Goodson over Beavers in KO's.
Any other surprises for anyone else?

anybody else
having a hard time staying focused at work? I know it’s not the season opener, but I’m anxious to see the cats play tonight.
sherrod martin
is listed behind cj wilson. that’s somewhat of a surprise since many expected him to be the nickelback.
Not that much of a surprise.
He hasn’t impressed much of anybody with his actual play since the draft. Bigtime project.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

This morning Steve Reid reported
That CJ Wilson is the current Nickel, but that Munnerlyn was right on his heals for that spot… No mention of Martin at all. Sounds like we could see Wilson and Munnerlyn on the roster, and our 2nd pick on the practice squad.

I bet we would lose Martin
if he hit the PS even though the other team would need to keep him on the roster all year. As a 2nd round pick the Panthers essentially have to keep him. Disappointed to hear this about Martin but that the chance you take when you draft a guy to play a different position.

Very disappointing
I hope the Panthers didn’t draft Martin figuring he’d be a project that would take some time to develop. He’s too high a pick and too old (turns 25 in October) for that — Martin is actually a few months older that both Marshall and C.J. Wilson. Agreed though, we may well lose him if we try to slip him through to the PS.
Wilson isn't really the "nickel" in the strictest sense.
He’s the third corner off the bench, but Marshall is the one who will move inside as the nickel corner. Those other guys are competing for that second outside slot, although I wonder if those plans would change if Munnerlyn and his tiny self won the job. That would make for trouble if a team had two big receivers, though. I’ll also say that there is no chance they try and pass Martin through waivers, which they’d have to to get him on the PS. They knew he was a project all along, and they’re not going to give up this early.

Not to mention
Marshall is pretty small himself, isn’t he?

That was my point.

i.e. that's why he was moving inside in the nickel.

Two inch difference
Marshall is 5-11, Munnerlyn 5-8, the rest of the CBs are all 6-1.
Sorry to be picky, but that's actually 3 inches
5-11 is short for a CB… 5-8 is short for a human! But haven’t Smitty and DeAngelo both taught us that size can be compensated for?

The listing order really doesn't mean anything
The coaches know who is playing well at each position. Training camp gives them a much clearer evaluation than preseason games will give to anyone scouting for possible waiver pickups.
Some of this listing order may be a smoke screen. If you want to get a guy through waivers to the Practice Squad, list him last on each roster and hope other teams think he’s not as good as you know he really is.
This is not the starters we will see tonight
I don’t think it takes into consideration injuries. I have heard numerous reports that Stewart will not play. And even though Smitty’s in practice, it seems kind of stupid to play him this early.

He's not really in practice.
Hasn’t been cleared for contact yet.

Good luck tonight
Which means, basically, lets hope for no injuries on either side!
Also, Barbados, great comment on what Vick’s statement should have been.
You play to win the game!

The biggest surprises to me . . .
Bernadeau and Cadogen.
James Anderson and Morty Ivy as #2 LB’s while Landon Johnson is #3.
Wesley ahead of Munnerlyn is a little surprising given the rave reviews Cap has been getting.
Will Parker
Wesley is a typical Fox veteran move
My guess is since it’s the 1st preseason game, Fox is trying to the veteran every opportunity before sticking the rookie out there.

How come you never replied to my email? Was I correct? ;-)

Wesley's spot was the most surprising to me.

Don't read too much into this.
The Pre-Season will decide the starters. Many of these roster moves are based simply on experience alone. We have many risers in the 2009 Panthers, and one good game could put them over the top and have them clinch the starting spot.

I still think Robinson should’ve been cut. I don’t know why they are holding on to this guy. Goodson is a triple threat & he can do everything Robinson can. It’ll be interesting to see how they use Goodson, I think they need to spread him out.
Because he was ultra-productive in college and has shown he can be an NFL returner?
Goodson has struggled thus far just catching kickoffs and punts.

Also about tonights game
We will get to play against …David Carr. He’s expected to be the first QB off the Giants bench
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
QB
I’m also excited to hopefully see hunter caldwell. He was thought of highly for a while in college and then fell apart. I’m hoping that he could be steal. 2 and half hours to go.
I'd love to see him as the de facto #3 on the PS.
