Josh Johnson
Check out this video: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-cant-miss-plays/09000d5d811ee805/Pre-WK-1-Can-t-Miss-Play-QB-keeper. I always liked Josh Johnson and I really wanted us to draft him. Last season was his rookie year, and if you look at our draft, I'm sure there's a name or two we could have replaced with this guy. As a senior in college, he threw 43 TDs and only ONE interception. With Freeman, McCown, and Leftwich in Tampa, this guy doesn't even get a look anymore. I think if we don't draft a top-tier Tim Tebow like QB next year, we should trade for this guy. The price can't be that high for a 4th string QB. Then again, with all those faces, he might just get cut in the three weeks.

He could still hit the practice squad I think for one more season.

No.
He was on the 53-man last year all season. As such, he is ineligible for any team’s PS.

That was a nice play
But lets put it into perspective. The play was made late into the 4th quarter of a preseason game. If lucky, there maybe a few guys on the field who will make the 53 man roster for an NFL team.

good point
but when compared to the number of great plays by other 3rd and 4th string QBs, he stands out. I think he could be a very good starting QB in the NFL, but someone has to give him a shot. Wherever he ends up, he’ll probably sit at least another couple years waiting for an injury to somebody – Matt Cassel/Tommy Maddox style.

Fox liked him too.
Johnson went to his alma matter. However, if you look at where he was drafted, it wouldn’t have made any sense for us to get him. Look at the guys we drafted before him at #160: Stewart (starting-caliber back), Otah (starter as a rookie), Godfrey (16-game starter as a rookie), Connor (likely future starter, probably could start for many teams in the league right now), Barnidge (currently running with the starters; may provide a vertical threat at TE we’ve never seen under Fox. And as WP said, let’s not let one good run against third-,fourth-, and fifth-stringers turn him into a great NFL QB. Our offense gets its rushing threat from the backs, not the QB. There’s no guarantee he’d even be better than Moore, so it’d be tough to get him if he was a 9/1 cut.

I think if we don’t draft a top-tier Tim Tebow like QB next year, we should trade for this guy
I think the 2010 draft is far too deep to be looking at McCoy, Jevan Snead, Bradford, Tebow or bust. I know we don’t have a 1st rounder, but in the second and beyond here are some names that will probably be available (if the previous 4 go first round and that’s a BIG if).
- Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame)
- Pat Devlin (Delaware)
- Tim Hiller (Western Michigan)
I’m pretty high on Clausen and there’s almost a guaranteed lock he’ll be available in the 2nd. Furthermore, there are some mocks that have Colt McCoy falling to the late 2nd early 3rd based on little more than team need.
Honestly, look at this draft. The perfect storm is brewing for Carolina to net a great QB where we are drafting. The conventional wisdom is that Detroit reached for Stafford, they should have taken a LT and gotten a QB in 2010, but realistically there are only a handful of teams who could be interested in a QB in the 1st or second round:
- Carolina
- Minnesota
- 49ers
- St. Louis*
- Denver*
- Bills*
- Jacksonville*
- Seattle*
(* Highly dependent of play of incumbent starter)
So, theoretically there could be only 3 teams looking for a QB in the 1st or 2nd round. I know alot depends on their college years but I think it’ll be:
Sam Bradford- #1 QB
Jevan Snead- #2 QB
Colt McCoy- #3 QB
Tim Tebow- #4 QB
With the possibility of getting McCoy or Tebow, I like our position.

I also like a couple of even later-round guys:
Rusty Smith (FAU) and Dan LeFevour (CMU)

judging off of one play
You act like my high regard for Johnson is based off one play, but that’s one more play than the guys you mention. I like him, however, because of his potential and his success in college. In his last three years at San Diego, he threw for over 9,100 yards, 109 TDs to 14 Ints (43 to 1 as a senior), completed over 68% of his passes and ran for another 1800 yards and 17 TDs. His college stats are still relevant because he is only 23 and has a lot of potential to be a star in this league, moreso, in my opinion, than Moore and McCown. Smith and LeFevour have not been as productive as Johnson. If either one of those guys were on the Bucs last year, they would have been buried behind Leftwich, McCown, Garcia and Griese, too. I’m comparing Johnson to those two because all three are probable long-term NFL back-ups despite having the potential to be long-time starters. I think Johnson can be a great one, but I doubt he gets the chance. Comparing him to the 4 QBs listed by Aussie doesn’t make sense because those guys will be starters and will be drafted very high.

How doesn't it make sense?
You are assuming they’ll all go high, this doesn’t seem to be the case. There is a vast amount of evidence to the contrary that excellent prospects will be available past round 3 next season.
I think there will be far better options for us than Johnson, we need to look for a sure thing not another possibly decent player who played well against 3rd and 4th stringers. As for his amazing college stats, lets face it, he played great playing 1-AA ball in San Diego.
I directly posted to your statement that ‘If we don’t draft a top QB we should trade for this guy" I’m saying that just because we don’t spend a 2nd rounder doesn’t mean we couldn’t get a ‘top QB’ in the 3rd or 4th.
