Vick Good Fit For Panthers!
http://realbitsofpanthers.com/2009/08/11/vick-good-fit-for-panthers/
Most interesting thing in the article.
In 2010, Vick could compete with Matt Moore to be the Panthers starting quarterback, since Jake Delhomme will probably leave after the 2009 season
Really, Jake's leaving after this year? Is that common knowledge and I just missed the boat?
If we're losing Jake next year I say lets sign Philip Rivers. He'd be less money than Peppers and he touches the ball EVERY offensive snap, clearly going to have a great impact on a game than a defensive player.
I'm not anti Peppers, but I don't think he makes a great enough impact to make the $ they offered him last year.

Well, good ole reliable espn analyst Michael Smith is predicting that we are going to sign Vick. I can’t understand why he would think that: A) no $$$, B) questionable character (not a JR likable quality), C) not gonna be a QB b/c he is a below average one and we are better off with Jake, D) what position would he play that would be of any use to us?
I highly doubt he comes here. On other news Fox expects Smitty to be back before the preseason ends, but we all know that Fox could just be playing dumb here.

Vick a Panther.... NOT
Why would we want to sign so dumba** like that to begin with?! Yeah Vick wasnt bad back in the day but he wasn’t that great either. I still don’t understand why their even letting him com back to the NFL.
The sooner Smitty gets back an Kemo the better off we will be. With out them we dont have many opptions to go to.

Separate question to anyone:
Since Kemo is on IR, are we still salary cap strapped? Doesn’t that open up some cap room?
Will Parker
by WillParker81 on Aug 13, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It does not.
Putting a player on IR does not change their cap hit. It only opens up a roster spot and typically allows insurance to cover the cost of the contract.

Rings are fluky.
Overall, Rivers has not only the better winning percentage, but the better QB numbers. I’d take him any day, and I think (while “franchise” QBs are tough to find, whatever that means) I’d find somewhere better to spend $15 mil a year than a player like Eli Manning.

On Rivers' attitude:
He is a firey QB kind of like Jake in that regard. He is a big time competitor, as evidence by playing through his ACL tear in the playoffs. Other than that, I could not really give you any in-depth or insider info.

Rivers is A LOT like Jake in the “fiery” department like WParker said… but he is also a down to earth- country- strong willed christian kind of guy. (not really far off from Jake I suppose?)
Rivers has always “talked trash”, but he has never really crossed any kind of line. Sure it doesn’t come across on TV very well, especially with ESPN analyzing every move… but he means well, and just wants to WIN. And he does.
He uses his emotion to hype his team, and his fans- similar to Steve Smith.

The key word their was around
Build the franchise around. For instance, Gamble is good, but he’s a piece of the puzzle, not the frame. Gross would be a frame, Delhomme even.

Of course Jake just kind of showed up one day and stole the show.
Most teams look for a franchise QB first. But Fox assembled all the pieces and just plugged Jake in.
I don’t think anybody ever dreamed he would lead us to the Superbowl and be so difficult to replace.

Because San Diego needs to make 'the choice'
It has always been looming that Shawn Merriman’s and Phillip Rivers’ extensions would have to come in the same year. If they can’t get a deal for Rivers worked out before the season and Merriman plays (forgive the pun) lights out… then they are going to have to make the decision. No way can they afford to sign both players to the kind of deals we’re talking about here.
Wishful thinking I know, but crazier things have happened.

No to Vick... next to impossible to get Rivers
It’s horrible from top to bottom. Vick does not fit in to John Fox’s philosophy in any way, shape, or form. Michael Smith is dead wrong on this one. The team that is going to sign Vick is going to be a team either hoping their organization can shield him (see New England), one that needs to put asses in seats (see Buffalo) or a team that never knows what to do (Raiders anyone?)
As for Rivers, I definitely think when it is said and done he’s going to get an Eli contract. Eli is being over paid, but that has set the new market value. No way is a San Diego fanbase going to settle for losing their first star QB since Dan Fouts after letting Brees go and the Leaf debacle. Only way it makes sense is if a major contractual issue occurs, or they decide Merriman is more important. If that’s the case the Panthers could be a very real target if Peppers leaves next season.
Rivers as a Panther? It makes me salivate a little.

Floria is the whole basis of the post
and the author provides no link to the reverenced opinion. And it is that, an opinion:
Florio believes that teams that ruled out Vick earlier are secretly scouting and asking his agent, friends, family, Tony Dungy, and even Mike Vick himself about the possibility of playing with their team. The Panthers could be one of those teams.
This is total speculation based on nothing. Irresponsible blogging in my view. Looks like a new site so I’ll cut him a break…for now ;)

Take Vick solely as trade bait
How about that? Mostly keep him on the bench, but run a couple packages to show him off this year. Then after the season, teams will see him as in football shape and more proven. So we use that to get another draft pick pick.

He wouldn't be the best backup in the league, or CLOSE to it.
Because of his limitations in football awareness and passing acumen, he’d have to learn a very stripped-down offense. I’d rather McCown get in there full-go than Vick at 30% of the playbook.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

Name one other multi-probowl backup QB
Vick will not be a starting QB in 09 because of events unrelated to football. McCown not starting is directly related to football. I think it is safe to say Vick has been far more successful at QB than McCown.

Who cares about Pro Bowls?
Roy Williams is a five-time Pro Bowler, and he can’t cover inside a phone booth. The reason Vick isn’t starting is because he can’t throw with any semblance of accuracy, read defenses, or manage a team at even average NFL levels. There’s a reason he doesn’t have a job.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Aug 13, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How did he get to the pro-bowl?
By making plays. I’m not arguing him as a typical QB (which you are exaggerating). But Vick wasn’t a typical QB. He had over 1000 yards rushing one year! Who does that? We have had a hard time many years finding a RB to get 1000 yards.
You are so caught up on how a QB makes plays that you fail to see that he did make plays… lots of them.

And as he ages he will have to rely less on his legs.
But I remember him just getting flat worn out in ATL. He was running around almost every offensive play. He will benefit from being used more sparingly in Philly.

Mike Vick = Super Bowl
Ah $&@# it, it’s not that funny anymore. I would love to see him play for a team that plays ATL this year, like San Fran, but the rivalry with CAR has chance to be good in the next few years. I don’t wanna see y’all take him and allow him implode your team as he did ours. His talent could translate to a WR, but people think that his golden arm equals talent in the NFL. Jeff George had a great arm, and so does JaMarcus Russell. So did Kordell Stewart. Big deal. If Vick had really changed, he wouldn’t still be telling people it’s QB or nothing. You screw up while having the chance to get paid more than 99% of the population while playing a game, and then think you have the right to dictate to teams where you want to play? “Yes sir, thank you sir, for the chance to make millions I’ll play where you ask.” If this isn’t coming out of his mouth, he needs to go work a 9-5….sorry guys, I’m off my soap box now….
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

It’s amazing how much the NFL has evolved in the last 5 years, to me the idea of Vick returning to dominance with his gimmicky running is almost impossible, especially with the move to faster LBs and more focus on the 3-4 defense.
