Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

The Carolina Panthers have claimed rookie tight end Andrew Davie off waivers from the New York Jets, the team announced Thursday.

Davie, 6-foot-4 and 256 pounds, was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent from Arkansas by the Jets on May 1. He played in 39 games with 15 starts for the Razorbacks and posted 24 receptions for 199 yards and six touchdowns. An effective blocker, Davie opened holes for running backs Darren McFadden and Felix Jones while at Arkansas. Following high school, he played four seasons of minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals before joining the Razorbacks.

Davie would seem to have good run blocking potential with his size and the production of the backs who ran behind him in college, although if they're trying to cover their bases for a longer-term injury to Rosario (as Darin Gantt suggests), he'd seem to be a strange fit, since he was never much of a pass-catching threat. Still, it will allow them to spread some TE reps in camp if Dante comes back slower than they anticipate.

Rosario's injury isn't serious.

Though, you do have his height wrong. Davie is 6,6 according to this blog.

There are those who'll tell you there's no such thing about a minor surgery...

And I’m just relaying information. The Rosario part comes from Gantt, and the height comes from the official press release from the signing.

No surprise...

…that a college website would list their man a bit larger than his actual size, though. Maybe we should split the difference and call him 6’5"? ;-)

our TEs

I think personal measurements from college always exagerrate. Either way, I think this guy is a training camp body we’ll practice on and he won’t make the team. I think we keep Rosario, King and Barnidge, and this guy gets cut some time in August. By the end of the year, Barnidge will be our #1 TE because of his ability to catch the ball. I’m basing that on what I read about him when we drafted him because I didn’t see him do anything last year.

I'm with you about Davie...

But I’d be hesitant to anoint Barnidge before we see what he can do as a blocker. King’s not a bad pass-catcher himself, he’s just not gonna stretch the field (although he had a few catches of 25+ yards that made differences in games last year.

+1/2

I agree that this guy is likely just a TC body. But I doubt we’ll see Barnidge as our #1 TE by the end of the year. I think King stays in that spot for his superior blocking. We don’t throw to TEs enough to warrant putting Barnidge in there because of his pass-catching ability. But, we’ve also only signed King to a one-year deal, so we may be lining up to release him next year so we can start Rosario or Barnidge.

Also, depending on how well recovered Rosario is from his “minor” surgery, I think we could see Barnidge as the #2 TE for a little bit…just to give Rosario more time and also to get Barnidge some more experience. If we do release King next season, it’ll be important for Barnidge to see playing time and demonstrate he can block effectively enough to be the #1 TE when King is gone.

But that’s just my two-cents,
—Neil

Barnidge has got to shine in TC and preseason before getting his shot on the field

I don’t recall seeing anything from him last TC so I have a hard time thinking he’s going to go from 3rd string to lots of playing time. Though I will say the Panthers kept him on the roster for a reason so they must have a plan for him. I would love to see more than just short curl routes from the TE
