2009 Bold Predictions
This fanpost was inspired by a previous fanpost by bigdavis. In this forum I encourage everyone to reply with a bold prediction about the Panthers and then one about any NFL team or player for the 2009 season. These are meant to be predictions that have a high risk of being wrong but a huge reward when you're right. Perhaps at the end of the season we can look back and see who was right and laugh at those that made some terrible predictions. Please do not make any safe prediction like the Panthers will make the wild card and don't preface you're statement by something like assuming everyone stays healthy. This is just for fun, so go crazy.
I'll start us off:
Julius Peppers will lead the league in sacks.
The Panthers will beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Here's a couple
Mike Goodson will become the Panthers kick/punt return specialist. And with 7 TD returns in 09’, will beat Devin Hester’s record.
Everette Brown will quickly become a starter and him and Pep will combine for 30 sacks.
Lastly, Smitty will make it through an entire training camp without having to apologize to a another player for the reconstructive surgery they just had.

I have some.
Marshall will combine with Gamble to become two of the best shutdown corners in the NFL.
The Panthers will utterly slaughter the Giants in Week 16 due to them not having their star running back Brandon Jacobs.
Deangelo Williams and Stewart will combine for over 2500 yards, 20 touchdowns, and a Lombardi Trophy.
Jesus Christ will return to Earth, replace Jake, and earn Pro-Bowl honors.

“Jesus Christ will return to Earth, replace Jake, and earn Pro-Bowl honors.”
But will be beat out by Tom Brady for All-Pro honors. lol
He will then appoint Tim Tebow his heir apparent.

My predictions at this point
I have to give account for the tough schedule:
Positive realistic Prediction: 10-6 NFC South Champs
Negative realistic: 10-6 Wildcard
Offense kicks ass again, defense improves to Top 10 in all phases; special teams surprise.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
That's another thing.
I said 10-6 last year. This year I’m thinking 11-5 :3
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Great idea!
For the Panthers, I’ll go with Gary Barnidge catching 35 passes, scoring 6 TD’s.
Tom Brady goes down early with another season-ending injury, his replacement suffers 32 sacks, and the Pats only win 7 games.
Try to keep access to this FanPost in the archives, so we can have a laugh in February.
That would have to be quite a few bombs from Barnidge...

Hah I like it!
For the Panthers: Mike Goodson will eclipse 400 yards rushing, 400 yards receiving, and 6 all purpose TDs (including special teams) in his rookie season. I also predict that Chris Harris will account for 10 turnovers.
Around the League:
The Detroit Lions will win 7 games this season.
The St. Louis Rams will have the #1 overall pick in next years draft… if they are even still in St. Louis.
Drew Brees will account for more yards and TDs than the entire Tampa Bay offense.
Matt Forte in Chicago will lead the league in all-purpose yards at the RB position.
Three rookie QBs will be leading their teams offense by season’s end.
The years offensive breakouts:
QB- Trent Edwards BUF
RB- Rashard Mendenhall PIT, Kevin Smith DET, LeSean McCoy PHI
WR- Devin Hester CHI, Robert Meachem NO, Nate Washington TEN, Hakeem Nicks NYG
TE- Greg Olsen CHI
Rookie of the Year: Michael Crabtree SF
Defensive Rookie of the year: Robert Ayers DEN
League MVP: Larry Fitzgerald ARI
Offensive Player of the year: Phillip Rivers SD
Defensive Player of the year: Jon Beason CAR
I know I wrote to many predictions… got on a roll. Want to see how good they are.
So does that mean you think Fast Willie and Westbrook get hurt?
Hester and Meachem would both be dangerous if they knew how to run routes and hold onto the ball consistently.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jul 27, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions
A little of both.
I think this is the year that Westbrook finally has the BIG injury that takes him totally out of games for an extended period. Instead of the dings and bruises that always leave a “Q” next to his name on fantasy lineups every Sunday. McCoy is another in the Westbrook mold, and even if Westbrook does not get hurt, I would wager a 1,000 all-purpose yard season for McCoy. At least it is apparent that Philadelphia by trading away all their other backups and drafting McCoy have faith in him to be the RB of the future.
Fast Willie may or may not get hurt, although he has shown the tendency to do just that. (Mendenhall not any better of course) However, I think the Steelers would like to get back to smashmouth football in the running game, and a powerful back fits the mold a lot better than a scat-back like Willie. I would not be surprised to see a 50/50 split to start the season with Mendenhall getting the goal line work all the time.
I think Hester is going to benefit bigtime from the cannon arm of Jay Cutler finally being able to exploit that downfield speed, as well as another year under his belt as a true WR. The same goes for Olsen in Chicago since Cutler has proven to be a friend to the TE, and this will be Olsen’s 3rd season in the NFL and as a starter.
Meachem is the most speculative pick obviously, but is kind of a “Jarret-esque” story of tons of talent. Both were dominant WRs in the college game that both teams really want to see excel. In the time Meachem was active last season he was productive, and as far as I can tell noone really knows why he didnt suit up more. I think the Saints work him into the slot, and then slowly into the #2 role.
last year and this year
Last year, I predicted 1500 yards, 20 TDS, and 2,000 all-purpose yards for D-Will in August, and I was right. The year before, I predicted 20 sacks for Peppers, and he got 2.5. So here we go…Moose will get 1,000 yards receiving, D-Will and J-Stew will be the first ever RB combo in which both get 1,000 yards rushing (1300 for D-WIll, 1050 for J-Stew) and 10 rushing TDs.
The Patriots will seem better than ever with last year’s 11-5 team getting Brady, Fred Taylor and Joey Galloway. They will beat us in the regular season. We will exact revenge in the Superbowl, and the Panthers MVP will be someone out of nowhere, like Goodson or Barnidge (similar to Timmy Smith’s 204 rushing yards in SB XXII).
Panthers’ Pro Bowlers for 2009-10:
Smitty, D-Will, Gross, Kalil, Peppers, Marshall, Godfrey, Beason, Davis
Prediction for next year, we trade up and get Tim Tebow.
Crazy prediction
Peppers gets 16+ sacks
Godfrey turns into the next Bob Sanders, without the bones of glass, and gets 7 INTs
D-Will goes for 1800, while Stewie misses some time but still improves with getting ever so close to 1000 and 12 TD’s.
Jake throws for 20+ TD’s, including 4 vs Arizona.
by Flowing Willow on Jul 27, 2009 6:47 AM EDT up reply actions
Oh boy...
If Moose gets 1000 yards, we’re in trouble. That means Smith got hurt or we were losing a lot of games.
And if we trade up for Tebow…it’ll be the 4th round.

Seattle wins the NFC West and Arizona does not make the playoffs.

Wasn't being sarcastic...
I really do think that is a bold prediction. I don’t think the Seahawks are going to be very good this season.
i disagree
I think the Seahawks are done. Hasslebeck is done, the O-line keeps getting worse, and Julius Jones and I-dunno-who-at-wr are their top talents. I think ARI and SF compete for the NFC West because SF’s offense will be a little better, and the defense will be a lot better. It’s a hunch based on experience on defense (Willis and Lawson) and Singletary’s intensity, and the overall weakness of the division. If ARI finds a way to keep their players happy and motivated, they could repeat as NFC champs, but they seem to have a virus spreading called “everyone should get paid more” I think many of them are underpaid, but not everyone will get the raise they want when they want it. Either way, we’re gonna win it all, so it doesn’t matter what they do.
by usana_gaines on Jul 27, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the Seahawks are primed to surprise.
I think their defense will be much improved. Their LB corps of Tatupu, Aaron Curry, and Leroy Hill is very nice, as are their starting ends in Patrick Kerney and Lawrence Jackson. Lucas/Brian Russell/Grant/Trufant is an old secondary, but they’ve all played well before. On offense, they picked up Houshmanzadeh, who, if overpaid, is still a great possession receiver who will fit in perfectly in that West Coast offense. Further, Deon Branch and Nate Burleson are both capable receivers, and I like John Carlson as a young guy who can make an impact up the middle. Add a healthy Matt Hasselbeck, and they could certainly compete, IMO.

The one thing you didn’t mention above in their improvements is Matt Hasselback. I don’t think he’s going to have a good year because I don’t think their running game will be very good.
I agree...
I think he’s pretty done as a top-flight QB. But he does have a lot of weapons in the passing game, and that can make mediocre guys look pretty good (see Bulger, Marc.)

Let me get mine in here. I don't think they're very bold, though.
The Panthers will be the number one rushing team in the league.
The Panthers’ defense will finish the season in the top 5 overall, and also in the top 5 in points allowed and sacks, top 10 in turnovers and tackles for loss.
The Panthers will be one of the final three teams in the league without a loss.
Steve Smith will finally receive national acknowledgment for being a complete player, with his downfield blocking being featured during national broadcasts.
Well . . .
. . . Michael Turner will suffer a season ending knee injury.
The Giants will have the best defense in football.
Dick Jauron, Jack Del Rio, Brad Chidress, and Jim Zorn get fired.
The Cowboys make the playoffs as a wild-card and win a playoff game for the 1st time since Troy Aikman.
The Falcons will finish 4th in the NFC South.
Michael Vick will score 7 TD’s.
Carolina will make the playoffs for consecutive seasons.
Double Trouble will combine for 3,000 all purpose yards.
Smitty will have double digit TD’s.
Jake will throw for 10 more TD’s than INT’s. (23/12)
Jarrett will have over 30 rec, 350 yds, and 5 TD’s.
Goodson will have 3 special teams TD’s.
Brown wins defensive rookie of the year.
Pep earn 1st team All-Pro Defense and signs long term with the Panthers.
Carolina wins their 1st Super Bowl. 32-29 over the Texans
Will Parker
LOL.
I stopped reading after “Cowboys win playoff game.”

Alrighty... here we go...
- J.P Losman will throw for 800yds his first outing in the UFL, Panthers sign Losman.
- Brown wins both defensive rookie and defensive player of the year.
- Jarrett becomes model citizen. Moose retires at end of season, but requests Panthers do not retire #87, instead asks Jarrett to wear it.
- Jon Beason breaks the single season record for tackles.
- Jon Kasey signs 20 year extension with Panthers
- Panthers invent new version of wildcat, called the ‘cardiac cat’ involving DeAngelo, Stewart, Goodson, Hoover and Fiametta being on the field at the same time.
- Brett Farve comes out of retirement in week 6 when a 5-1 Colts team lose Peyton Manning for the season.
- Michael Vick pays for the season tickets of all Brown’s fans sitting in the Dawg Pound.
- Despite reports, Plaxico Burress does no jail time. Is signed by team and quickly takes offense paintballing to build team unity, Goodell decides this is a PR disaster and suspends Burress for 2 games.
- Jack Del Rio loses job as Jaguars head coach, returns to Panthers as defensive co-ordinator or LB Coach.
HAHA

No Smitty on the field during the Cardiac Cat? that just doesnt seem right. Gotta have him in there.

OK, less bold more accurate predictions...
Steve Smith suffers a plantar fascia tear, goes out for season…
Graham Gano wins the K job in Baltimore, kicks a 69 yard FG…
Brad Childress loses his job to Urban Meyer following the season. After a bad year, the Vikings use their high draft pick to take Tim Tebow.
Cardinals win the NFC West again…
Saints, Falcons, and Panther all finish 11-5.
-Falcons win division based on division record tie-breaker
-Saints win wild card based on NFC record tie-breaker
-Panthers watch their #20 pick used on Eric Berry next year
Mike Vick scores 20 TDs. Then after turning his PS3 off, listens to his agent talk up the CFL…
Panthers are last years Patriots, 11-5 and golfing in Jan…
M Turner rushes for 1500 yards, J Norwood rushes for 950 and has 550 yards receiving…
T Gonzales catches 12 TDs…
Matt Ryan completion % over 70….becomes new standard bearer for NFL QBs…
H Douglas has 450 receiving, 6 TDs…
C Jackson will have 4 special team TDs…
W Moore wins Defensive ROY
J Abraham has 20 sacks playing less than 50% of the snaps…
Falcons win their first Super Bowl 45-20 over NYJ
OK, I know I’m not being very bold, but I like being right…

There are some zany predictions here...
But I tell you this. S Eric Berry is a top 5 pick (barring some sort of disaster this season) and at worst top 10. If someone gets him at #20 overall, they will have pulled the steal of the draft. The kid is a beast. Likely the NFL’s next great safety.

I wonder if the Ravens might like to have Rhys Lloyd available for that competition (we stole him off their PS after they had shuffled him between there and the real roster all year.)
Also, I’m confused…if the Panthers went 11-5, how would they have the #20 pick?
Obviously, these are ludicrous, but I think 450 for your boy Harry might be underrating him.

Roddy White demands a trade, and is dealt to the Panthers for Nate Salley.

The thing about Turner, is that he’s a good RB, but was overrated last year because of the amount of carries he got. His stats were pretty tilted. If Deangelo Williams were to get the amount of carries Turner did, he’d be at around 1800 yards rushing. I’m not saying Turner’s going to fall on his face, but the Falcons cannot continue riding him like that and expect him to be healthy throughout. For an example just look at the man he used to play behind: LT.
Limiting DeAngelo's carries...
Keeps him fresh and allows him to post that sick ypc average. No offense, but I don’t think he could handle 370+ carries…

Elayne Boosler
But would Williams have been able to hold up with that many carries?
The capacity to be durable enough to get those carries is not something that should be ignored.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Aug 5, 2009 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed.
With you and NaGaNole. I’m not saying Deangelo could handle that over an extended period of time. Maybe for one season. And I did take into account that his ypc would go down with added carries. However, my original point still remains, if the Falcons keep riding Turner like that, he won’t last more than 3 years.
+1
Norwood has to be used more…

Elayne Boosler
as much as I wish he would be
Mike Smith has already come out and said that our KR and PR are already set and locked. I presume he is referring to Norwood on KR and Douglas on PR… which means, we probably won’t be seeing too much more of Norwood.
Perhaps someone will shine in the preseason to help ol’ Smitty change his mind.
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
Agreed
Atlanta should shave away some of Turners carries, but the statement that he wouldnt last 3 more years isn’t necessarily true. He is young in his career now that he is finally a featured back, and seems to be very tough. Impossible to tell, but given the investment ATL is making in improving the defense and bringing in Tony Gonzalez for the passing game, it seems they want to take pressure off him by giving the opposition more to worry about.
He is still fresh for his age because he started as a backup, and maybe I was using a bit of hyperbole when I said 3 years. However, even a perennial All-Pro like LT has recently shown the effects off all those carries, and I’d be a bit wary choosing Clinton Portis so high in your fantasy drafts. He’s been another load bearing horse thus far in his career.
That was less about workload...
And more about being just plain old.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Aug 12, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Williams could handle that
This is all pointless because D-Will will never get that here in Carolina, but he is small and shifty, very hard to get a solid hit on. If he doesn’t take too many knocks, those carries aren’t as damaging.

If I remember correctly
last year, MJD had most of the goalline carries. D-Will had several too. The point is, it’s not the carries, it’s the hits, if you aren’t being hit very hard, then even I could carry the ball 30 times a game. Now carries are the best way to measure wear and tear, but you have to take into account the runners style as well.

Competition and opportunity can produce a new and effective player.

...because he was a rookie.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Aug 4, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions
...didn't say he was...
…or even imply it. He was an eight year journeyman — but when he got his chance, he stepped up, and became an effective starter for us. I was implying that injuries to starters can be the opening another player needs to claim his own spot.
We didn’t have the big DT to fill Kemoeatu’s shoes last December — Hayden was too undersized. One of these new guys may (!) be able to plug the hole.
Vincent had shown the capacity to be a quality starter for good teams in the past.
None of the guys you listed have shown any abilities remotely like it. And it wasn’t an injury that gave Vincent his spot, either. He earned it in competition with several other veteran OGs (Fonoti, Brown, etc.)
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

You're still picking nits
I never said he was a rookie.
I never said anybody was injured.
I never said the 3 rooks have shown a similar level of talent or experience.
I merely stated that — in essence — crisis presents opportunity, and that players who weren’t expected to start are often thrust into the role, and often surprise.
Without being what you love to call “delusional,” I was attempting to insert a modicum of optimism to an otherwise gloomy thread.
Here’s an example: in 1992, an untested 22 year old QB was thrown into the lineup (having only attempted 4 passes in his NFL career before that) when the starter for the Green Bay Packers went down. Had even YOU been the expert then that you are now, one doubts you’d have immediately known whether or not he would succeed. Why don’t you go look up who he was.
And quit trying to find a fault or error with my posts. You’re not up to it.
Comparing Vincent to those players makes no sense at all.
There is no connection whatsoever. Further, there was no “crisis” at the RG position. They were quite sure that they could plug in a low-upside vet and have the rest of the line carry them.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

Ehh, that QB you’re referring to was a second, nearly first round pick. In regards to the DT competition Corey Irvin is the closest at being a third round pick (towards the second half of the round). So, the talent isn’t there…at least according to the draft.
Ehh, that QB I was referring to...
was drafted by the Falcons in ‘91, threw 4 passes for them, never completed one, and was outta there the next year. You think they didn’t think he mighta been a bust?
All I’m saying is you just never know…
When he got his second chance with the Packers, when their (trivia question) 1st string QB went down, he rose to the challenge. The rest is history.
I’m not saying it will happen to our untested DT prospects, only that it could. Kemo’s big, but he’s no all-star — it’s not impossible that somebody else could plug a hole as well as he did. Not being a skill position, I don’t think we should be wailing and gnashing over his loss. Just trying to be optimistic.
I wish I could be as optimistic...
But I saw our defense whither away towards the end of the season when Kemo got hurt. Hopefully Meeks has a trick up his sleeve or one of these young guys can fill the void, but right now I’m thinking we’re gonna have to score more to keep up.
Damione Lewis went down, too
His injury occurred when he was trying to fill Kemo’s shoes and fill the hole vs the run, which is not his forte. Then when they were both out, and I think Gary Gibson was, too, we had nothing left but Nick Hayden, and his small size and lack of experience made us easy pushovers by the Giants.
I’m banking on new bodies to be molded by the new DC Meeks. If that’s too optimistic, then I agree, we in big trouble!
Not so much a trick...
His style is just to use tiny DLs and tell them to rush the passer while the back seven stands in for run support.

I notice you ignore that cogent analogy.
Furthermore, you miss the entire point, which was: “Competition and opportunity can produce a new and effective player.”
I made no comparison, which you try to infer I did, of any of them to Vincent — IN ANY WAY. You constantly portray yourself as the arbiter of logic, but you just don’t get it. Your badgering is the think that “makes no sense.”
Do you always have to think you’re right?
By including Vincent in the initial discussion, you compared him distinctly.
That Green Bay QB, by the way, was not a rookie in any way and also had a vastly overrated season in which he took advantage of an offensive system that allowed him to pass more than all but four other QBs in the league.

Ehh…Kemo might be turning into Sean Gilbert Jr. I hope Meeks, or Irvin, or Favorite, or somebody has an answer. Otherwise this might be a long season. It only figures that it happens this year (the year we’re destined to have a losing record). Speaking of destinies, I now would not be surprised to see the Saints win the division. Everything seems to be falling into place.
Did you watch the last game of the season?
The Saints didn’t need to run. Drew Brees lit us up.
I watched it alright...
I still can’t believe that Carolina successfully pulled that win, breaking the NFC South’s worst to first record and managing to keep Drew Brees from getting his record.
I didn’t say that the Saints won’t be able to do anything in the air, I had just sudgested, even without Kemo, they still won’t be able to run the ball up the middle on Carolina. I just can’t jump on the Pierre Thomas bandwagon.

We gave Brees the chance with that last throw
We gave him wide open routes in the 20 yard range he needed to get the record, he just didnt make them.

curiosity question, and I'm sure someone in here knows the answer
what exactly is the new rule on “the wedge” as a blocking formation?
I was playing the demo for Madden 10 and noticed that as soon as the KR catches the ball, a wall of defenders forms in front of him. I was under the impression that this was the “wedge” that was supposed to be banned…
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
Not sure what the rule is, but if you’re playing Madden for the realism you’ve got the wrong game. I used to be the most avid Madden player but around the time D. McNabb got on the cover the game went downhill and became too arcady for me. Now every game they just seem to rest on their laurels instead of coming up with innovative ideas or fixing frustrating options like QB vision. But yeah, it seems like ever since online play and the Madden reality show got big, the game has steered towards the arcady 5 minute quarter gameplay modes and less about creating a footbal sim. Pity.
Sorry, a bit of a tangent, I know, but you’d be better off playing NCAA football, believe me. It’s better. Although lately that’s not saying much. And I’m not even a huge fan of college football.
the game has been listening a lot more to fan opinion
such as going back to the old playbook selection style and ridding itself of QB vision and “pass/run commit”.
I like the games, and for the most part they are normally up to date on rule changes, such as the “push out” rule
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
NCAA has gotten worse, IMO

The rule on the wedge.
The wedge is outlawed as a option on kicking returns. The wedge can be defined as a wall of players surrounding the returner to try to keep players from getting to the kick returner. Players would rush at the returner in an effort to ‘break the wedge’ and the NFL decided that it was simply too much contact in too little space.
The new rule is that there cannot be 3 or more players near the returner at any time making blocks. They have to run downfield, pick their guys, and make the blocks. It’s not a huge change, as most people didn’t use the wedge anyway, but the teams that do will probably take a couple of big linemen out of their special teams and replace them with linebackers
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
More than 70% of the teams used the wedge the majority of the time.
Carolina was around 40%.
