Panther Paw Prints - QB Drills Edition
Another short edition of Paw Prints for you Panther fans. For those Jake Delhomme detractors who think Jake is not mobile enough in the pocket, please be advised that new QB coach Rip Scherer is on it!
Camp Countdown: Quarterbacks
Scherer's practice drills for the quarterbacks turn their section of the field into obstacle courses. In addition to dodging the dummies, they leap over and dart between obstructions, all while keeping their eyes forward and on potential targets. With the practice routine altered, Delhomme's 12th offseason became all about learning new tricks. "No doubt. A ton," he said. "And it's probably more difficult for someone like me, because we've done things a certain way for a while here and now we're doing things somewhat differently to help us, and that's a process, because when you've done things one way for a while, you get used to it. But I think that's also good; that also challenges you.
So maybe we will have a more nimble Delhomme in the pocket this season. Scherer worked wonders for Cleveland's Derek Anderson so maybe he can repeat the magic in Carolina. Say what you want about Delhomme's physical ability as a QB, there is no denying he had the right attitude about what it takes mentally to win.
"The greatest athlete on the planet is Tiger Woods, and he's retooled his swing numerous (times). He's the best, so why do you do that?" Delhomme said. "So I know for somebody as measly as myself, to work on something new and something like that I think that's great and that's why I'm enjoying this part."
No one will ever accuse Delhomme of 'getting too big for his britches'.
- Steve Reed poses 10 burning questions for the Panthers coming season with #10 being the most pertinent for me:
Ten burning questions as the Carolina Panthers prepare for the 2009 season - CarolinaGrowl.com
10. Can the Panthers buck history and make the playoffs? Never in the team’s 14-year history have the Panthers been to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. In fact, never have the Panthers put together consecutive winning seasons. It won’t be easy for coach John Fox to end that streak considering the Panthers play only one team this year that finished with a losing record in '08.
We have got to break this streak this season!
- Fromer Panther announcer Bill Rosinski has joined ESPN Radio and will being doing college football and basketball broadcasts:
NFC South - ESPN
Rosinski worked for the Panthers from 1995 through 2004 and hosted a popular talk-radio show in Charlotte after his departure from the team. He also was the main voice on Falcons' broadcasts from 1992 through 1994. He's done all sorts of other radio work, including covering boxing, through the years.
- I hesitated to link to this one since we don't have all the details yet and its not Panther related but Big Ben is the defending SB winning QB (and I'm scratching for links today)

"The timing of the lawsuit and the absence of a criminal complaint and a criminal investigation are the most compelling evidence of the absence of any criminal conduct," Cornwell said. "If an investigation is commenced, Ben will cooperate fully and Ben will be fully exonerated."
I do hope this ends up being a money grab as the NFL just doesn't need any more bad pub like this.

Good way to view several pieces regarding our Panthers on one site!
Especially nice for those of us that are either too lazy or too busy to search for info and one of the reasons why I try to contribute to the fanshots from time to time.
I have high hopes for Scherer’s work with Jake, maybe we will see a noticeable difference on the field.

If I had to guess...
There is so money grubbing woman behind this whole Big Ben thing. I read the article this morning, the allegations seems fishy at best given there were never any criminal charges.
Also, good to hear that instead of practicing against stonehenge, Jake might be required to learn some movement skills.
by Tater596 on Jul 21, 2009 12:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The woman in the case seems to have had psychiatric problems in the past but Big Ben did say they had “contact” in the past so it may all be in her head. I don’t know if I would call her money grubbing quite yet, until we find out more facts about the case. You are right about it is fishy because there were no criminal charges.
I would like to see Jake be able to move around a little bit in the pocket. I don’t want him to turn into a running quarterback or anything but a little escapability has never hurt a QB. At least Jake is showing a willingness to work on some parts of his game.
I don’t want to be too positive but I feel like the Panthers could withstand some injuries this year, except on the O-line and DT position (we could just move Peppers there, he wants a new position doesn’t he?), so I don’t think that would be the reason the Panthers struggle. I think if the Panthers don’t make the playoffs it will be because of a tougher schedule and some bad luck.

"Psychiatric problems?"
How do you figure? I haven’t seen anything mentioned about her mental condition outside of depression she claims that begun with this incident.

Clearly you need to read TMZ.com as much as I do. She fell in love with a man who did not exist.
Here is the link…http://www.tmz.com/2009/07/21/ben-roethlisberger-sexual-assault-pittsburgh-steelers-superbowl-lawsuit-soldier-mcnulty/

I don't know if that TMZ link is fair.
It’s totally unsourced, and it could easily be a Steelers fan or a Roethlisberger contact trying to discredit her.

Don’t question TMZ man! They broke the Michael Jackson story first…I think.
Yeah, it could be someone trying to discredit her but I hate to say it, they are usually pretty accurate.

Umm...
Breaking something that’s not true isn’t going to get any credit from me. They had him dead at like 2:00. He wasn’t pronounced dead anywhere near that early.

Then again...
Injuries are the only thing that’s ever stopped us before. In every year we’ve missed the playoffs from ’04 on, major injuries at key positions were what hurt us the most.

Exactly
I feel good about the depth at most of the positions. Of course anytime you lose a great player it will hurt the team but I overall just feel good about the team’s depth. I don’t want to get too excited this year though, until I see the team play.

Thoughts:
The more important part of the Rosinski announcement is that he won’t be working NFL games for the first time in 20+ years. He has been doing work for Westwood One following his dismissal from the Panthers, but he won’t have time with his ESPN schedule.
The Roethlisberger charge is interesting. It would be easy to dismiss the woman as being out for money because of the timing of the suit and the lack of a criminal complaint, but the suit lists some very specific details. It will certainly be interesting to see how it plays out.

Yep and if I am not wrong, she has actually hired a reputable lawyer who has worked other high profile cases before, so clearly be bought the story. I think I read that on PFT.

First MP questions my knowledge of TMZ and now you tell me defense attorneys don’t always believe their clients…my life has changed so much in one day.
Seriously, I know that can be the case. I just thought it gave her claim some more credence that someone who’s reputation could go in the toilet if it is a bad joke signed on. I could be wrong.

Sorry but I already use that strategy
I try not to draft Panthers simply because I also over-value, though I sure wished I had reached for D-Will last season. So many leagues saw Stewart get drafted before him…

Yeah, I wish I'd over-drafted DWill last year, too.
sigh
Instead, I seem to recall asking that LT be oiled and wrapped in grape leaves and brought before me. I think that’s how I phrased it.
Yeah, that moment was not a high point in my fantasy football career, for a whole set of reasons…
by r3 on Jul 23, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ha...
A good fantasy football player does not care who his players play for…although I did do alright last year (2nd out of 12…lost in the finals because of that stupid Warner game in NE) in my top league using Stewart (5th round) and DeAngelo (7th.) I also got great value picks out of Kurt Warner (11th), Chris Johnson (10th), Tony Gonzalez (6th), Brandon Marshall (4th.) Made me feel a little silly to have gotten Darren McFadden in the 3rd.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

Your list there
Sounds like a who’s who of my teams from last year. I to lost a couple leagues due to that Warner debacle in snowy New England. Just totally didnt even consider it would be snowing up there on that morning. Boy was I pissed.
The gamebreakers for me were a couple players I made sure to grab in the late rounds of every league:
Chris Johnson and Kurt Warner
I also got great value out of Michael Turner. I had the gusto to take him where he was projected (3rd-4th round) and it paid off big time. I don’t know if I am as sold as I was on Turner when it comes to Derrick Ward, but if I can get him round 5 or so in a 12 team league, I will definately take that leap.
by Tater596 on Jul 22, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Turner did work well.
I also had some other guys that contributed, even if they weren’t mindnumbingly shocking or special. Gore did his job as my workhorse back; TO was a stupid pick for the late 2nd round, but I figured I’d rather have two potentially dynamic receivers than one mediocre back, and he and Marshall were deadly. Eli also was a nice option when Kurt had bad matchups.
Also, one difference about Turner compared to Ward: an established starter already in place. I bet the Bucs feel a lot better about Earnest Graham carrying the load than the Falcons did about Norwood.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

I had a decent team
I was scraping for wideouts and a solid starting RB, Barber didn’t work out so well, neither did Jones-Drew. I did have Williams, but after the Minnesota/Atlanta/Tampa Bay debacles early I cut him. Worst mistake of my fantasy football life. :( Phillip Rivers, John Kasay, and my defense of Dqwell Jackson, Jonathan Vilma and Thomas Davis etc carried me to fourth. :)

He does seem to know what the real issue is...
The concern comes on the defensive side of things, as the Panthers gave up 30 plus points in 5 of their final 7 games, and that will not win football games.
As for last year’s predictions, he did note the “nice pieces” we added in Ian Scott and D.J. Hackett. lol.
