Six years, $62.5 million for Suggs
Prior to the FA period, I advocated letting Peppers walk. Often, people asked me who I'd replace him with. My typical answer was Terrell Suggs of the Ravens, who was also hitting the FA market. He's younger, nearly as talented and versatile, comes without the headaches, and, I surmised, would be much cheaper. As it turned out, they both got franchised and it was a moot point. Still, though, if Peppers is truly wanting to go up to $15 mil a year, I hope people will see that that demand is just plain ridiculous after the recent $12 mil a year deal of Jared Allen and this most recent signing.

Maybe I missed something...
But he’s getting $40M in the first two years = $20M/season. Peppers is asking for $15M/season correct?

And then he's getting 5 a season after that.
The $40 mil is paid in those two years, but they’re prorated over the length of the deal because they’re bonuses.

Last time I checked Suggs didn't take whole games off either...
Peppers is a legend in his own mind and this whole fiasco could have been avoided if he didn’t have a pathetic ‘yes man’ as an agent who could realistically evaluate the market and realize what they could, and couldn’t get.

Welcome to the blog James the Aussie
I was going to insert some old, worn out Aussie joke but I’m drawing a blank…I imagine you are tired of the Crocodile Dundee stereo type huh?

It's all good...
most people ask if I ski alot because in the South it appears Austria and Australia are the same place anyway. I’d rather a crocodile dundee joke than a governator joke.
Thanks for the welcome, long time reader, first time commenter….hahaha

peppers won't take a pay cut
any long term deal peppers signs before march of 2010 would be a pay cut for 2009. he’s getting 16.7 million, so signing for les money than that is a pay cut. in fact, he can just bark the same garbage next year and get 17 million more, unless everette brown and company prove we don’t need him. by the way, with all this drama going on, is there any money to sign everette brown?

Not necessarily.
Jared Allen was paid $21.2 mil in the first year of his deal. Suggs, obviously, is getting $40 over the first two: $15 in year one and $25 in year two. And, again, the single year guarantee, no matter how high, offers him no protection against i jury, illness, or any other issue that may cause him to struggle. And yes, again, there is a rookie portion of the cap. We have room to sign all of them.
And PS: The tag requires a 20% raise, so Peppers would be looking at over $20 mil.

The thing is, none of this matters next year
As long as we don’t have a salary cap, players can be paid whatever they want. Contracts signed this year will seem like a bargain compared to contracts signed in 2010. Crap is about to hit the fan.

Wrong.
A: There is no guarantee whatsoever that the CBA won’t end up being extended.
B: If the cap goes away, not only is the payroll maximum gone, but the payroll floor will be gone too. Will some teams (i.e. Washington, Dallas, etc.) spend away? Sure, but others (CIN, CLE, JAX) won’t spend 75% of what they do now. And you know how we’ve been in the top 10 in wins since Fox came on board? Well get ready to kiss that goodbye, because with the size of our market and fanbase relative to lots of other teams, we just won’t be able to compete.
