Panther Paw Prints - Beason Blog Edition

This edition starts with a look at a Panther player blog. Jon Beason has a new post up on his blog that talks about 'making deposits' through hard work that will then pay off during the season. This guy talks like a ten year veteran.

Making Deposits - JonBeason Blog post - jon, beason, carolina panthers, sport, blog, official website
I’ve come to the realization that everybody likes to talk about what you did or how great you are, the season you had and the Pro Bowl, but to me the NFL is a "what have you done for me lately" league because none of that stuff matters if you don’t make the next play.

ProFootballWeekly.com - Panthers DEs Brayton, Brown among those competing for snaps opposite Peppers
While Brayton’s job appears to be safe, Johnson will face a challenge for the third-down snaps from rookie Everette Brown, who eventually could replace Peppers should Peppers depart after playing under the one-year franchise tender this season. The Panthers traded their first-round pick in 2010 to move up in the second round and select Brown, and the plan is for him to contribute from Day One.

Star-divide

  • Something I didn't know what that KR Larry Beavers is a former QB who didn't take to the position change right away:

A change did Beavers good
"When they moved me, I said, 'Dang, I played quarterback all my life, and now they've got me moving to wide receiver.' I wanted to quit football," Beavers said. "The coaches talked me into it, and said it would be a great fit for me." As is often the case, the coaches were right. His first full season as a wide receiver saw him snag 48 passes for 1,076 yards, good for a 22.4-yards-per-catch average. A three-touchdown-reception game against Averett -- with two of the scores coming from beyond 40 yards -- sealed the deal. Although he didn't know it at the time, Beavers was on his way to the NFL, thanks to the change to receiver. "I've been in love with it ever since," he said.

  • Long Snapper candidate JJ Jansen is focused on being perfect:

Long snapper's creed: Start perfect, get better
"I don't know that it's so much of a competition between us as it is a competition with ourselves, and we want to put our best foot forward," Jansen said. "It's a little different being a long snapper because you're not really competing against a person; there's not a man across the line you're trying to beat -- you're just trying to be the best you can be.

  • If the Panthers are going to sign Peppers to a long term contract they had better get it going:

Darin Gantt's Panthers Blog | The Herald - Rock Hill, SC
This week also promises some news, one way or another, on the Julius Peppers front. Wednesday's the deadline to sign him to a long-term contract this season, lest he play out the year under the franchise tag he already signed.

  • I'm not sure that these Panthers serve as a good example for this post:

NFL teams counting on veterans' return to form | Sporting News
Before crashing in the playoffs, the Carolina Panthers were one of last season's big comeback stories, going from 7-9 to 12-4 behind several rebounding veterans. DeAngelo Williams went from 717 yards rushing to 1,515, and Julius Peppers pushed his sack total from 2 1/2 to 14 1/2 . Having Jake Delhomme for 16 games instead of three didn't hurt, either.

Also says he’s working out with Dante Rosario and that he’s looking pretty good. It appears Rosario should be back for training camp without any problems.

Beavers going to be an advanced Steve Smith

Beavers would be more or less an advanced kind of Steve Smith if he can make it to the 53 man roster. I think he’s going to be a great player, and i know we need peppers but i would prefer we trade him as i know he’s not going to sign a long term contract. He only said that to let fans love him back, and most fans already forgave him. I think we already have a great core of DEs and i think Hille Taylor would be a great DE if he can add about 20-30 pounds to his frame and keep his speed. As for Beason, i think he already speaks for himself. He’s the best Linebacker i have ever seen in this league. He’s not a sack artist but he’s a tackling machine. I just hope he end his Career here and not be a salary cap move by our front office. Charles Johnson in the DE to watch out for this season, he’s going to have double digits sacks this season. He goes around too much and doesn’t swim in. If he can learn how to swim in, he would be better than Pepers but not as athletic. Tyler Brayton would probably not be resigned after this season, but would paly a vital role this season as he can play the run.

Don't ignore Beavers' level of competition...

He was unbelievably productive, but that production came against DIII schools. He probably has a lot of work to do before he can thrive against NFL players.

I don’t think Taylor can carry another 10 pounds from what he was at last year, much less 30. He bulked up some 20 pounds between the draft and the beginning of the season. I think he’d be better off getting some reps at LB to enhance his versatility, because I just don’t see him ever getting big and strong enough to be a rotational end.

3-4 still the best option for our defense

Well if Hilee Taylor should play LB, it would go back to what Peppers wants and i think it would be fantastic. Think about it, Hilee rushing from the outside, and Brown and peppers coming from the side and Johnson either rushing or falling back to coverage. and the DT just occupying two blockers. This would be a defense no quarterback would want to face. I think Peppers is right, the 3-4 defense is a good option for us since our CB’s can’t keep up. Even if they don’t change to 3-4, i think they should infuse some 3-4 defensive schemes in there so it would make our defense tougher and harder to run or pass on. I really don’t think Mr. Meeks would change anything as the Defense is still run by Coach Fox. I wouldn’t just him now until i see what the defense would be like come preseason..

No it's not.

We don’t have any coaches with any experience in it, and we don’t have the DL personnel for it. Plus, hardly any of our players have any pro experience in it.

I haven't liked much of what PFW has done lately...

And this Brayton over Johnson business is no different. What good does it do us to bury a recent third-round pick we knew was a developmental prospect on the bench behind a seventh-year vet who has probably seen his best years come and go already?

Very cool quote from the Jansen article:

“If you ask all the guys around the league — even guys that don’t have major mistakes — I don’t think anyone would consider themselves 100 percent. Guys like Jason Baker make us look good by handling the snaps that aren’t quite on (the mark). But certainly it’s a unique pressure; it’s one I thrive on and really enjoy.”

Exactly. And since when does Fox not give his early draft picks every opportunity

I developed wrinkles waiting for Fox to develop guys like Drew Carter and Eric Shelton. It’s hard to believe Deshaun Foster and Keary Colbert actually started for us. Johnson has shown more progress than any of these guys… Although Colbert’s rookie season wasn’t bad. But unless Johnson digresses I think he has to get the nod at some point.

Foster was pretty darned good as the #2 in '03.

And I think you meant regress, but I digress. ;)

Long Snapper drama

And i hope this long snapper business that the panthers did don’t come back and bite them in the a$$ cos i am pretty sure Jason kyle can’t be paid more than $1.4 Million and the current guy they have they have to atleast pay him $600,000. Making them to only save about $800,000. I know they can pay another rookie with this money (with signing bonus) but is it worth bad snaps and costing you games? i just hope they made the right decision.

Actually...

If JJ Jansen is paid the minimum the next two years (and I can’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be, that’s the standard for UFA contracts), he’ll only receive $385K this year and $475K next year. Sundberg would get just $295K if he wins the job. The minimum for a vet of Kyle’s experience this season is $845K, and he was $82K over the minimum last year. So yeah, if you can cut 50% of the cost you allocate to a position, you’re doing pretty well for yourself. And it’s not like these are some random scrubs we found off the street, either: Jansen was going to win the GB job until his injury last year, and Sundberg was Cal’s LS from the first game he ever played as a freshman through the end of his senior year. No need to predict doom and gloom just yet.

does anyone think Richard Marshall is ready to be the number 2 corner? based on what i have seen, i think he would cost us too many pass interference calls. Hope he learns.

by panthertillidrop on Jul 15, 2009 12:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think he has the mind set for it.

Meaning the desire to succeed, competitiveness, experience, etc. He has been quoted as saying that he was disappointed in his performance last year. When I combine that with the fact that he will be competing for the #2 spot for the first time, I think he has been and will be busting his butt to be ready for the Eagles and the rest of our schedule. Our pass rush was good last year (9th in NFL in sacks) and has potential to be even better. This will help the transition. Hopefully another year of experience from Marshall, Harris, and Godfrey will help them improve our average pass defense this year. Here are some stats from last season for the entire NFL:

-16th in passing yards/game
-22nd in INT/game
-6th most passing attempts/game

Yup.

We were in the middle of the road in terms of stats like YPA and passer rating allowed, too. The only thing we were pretty good at was 1st down % (10th), but that could certainly be attributed to our big cushions we gave to wideouts.

Last year, for whatever reason, was probably his worst season.

He’s shown well—even as a starter—in the past. Trust me, his performance of last season gives me pause, but we know he’s got being good in him. It’s just the consistency he’ll need to show.
