Only thing I have against Jake Delhomme

The only thing I have against Jake as my starting qb is that he is completely average. Its not a terrible thing in that he usually won't cost you a game and if not given enough pass attempts he can go through a game without 6 pics lol.  But he also won't take over a game like the greats like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Ben the Burger can. If you're down by 21 points hes not gonna turn into superman and come back.  He has a really good winning percentage but also has played on some strongs teams with good running games and strong defenses. Lets face it hes only had two really good seasons. I wouldn't put Jake in the same group as Peyton, Tom, Donovan, Carson or Burgerboy but I would say hes top 20, probably at 19. Hes a game manager  who does well despite what he has physically much like Chad Pennington but he isn't quite as acurrate or aware as Penny is. Don't get me wrong I'd much rather have Jake over someone like Daunte Culpepper or JP Losman anyday. He has moments where I am just really really glad hes on my team but then he has a game where you wonder how he ever became a pro qb. I think I am at the point where if the Panthers are down by more than 21 in the 4th I want to see Matty get some playing time and possibly challenge for the starting job later this season or take over next year. Its not that I don't like Jake anymore, its just I feel like hes peaked and done as much for the Panthers as he can. He is what he is, a game manager who needs a strong running game and a good O-line to win.Just look at his last two playoff games where they needed him to step up. Against Seattle in the 06 NFC Championship game he had 1 touch and 3 pics, and well we all know what when down in the desert. I think its time we started leasing time to Matty in blowouts, whether they are losses or wins. That way we can already have a qb with some playing time under his belt and still fairly young who can lead this team for the next decade or so if everythings works out. Leave some comments, good or bad and Peace out Panther fans

Against Seattle...

We were using Jamal Robertson, a career special teamer, as our primary RB by the 10:00 mark in the game. Brady and Manning aren’t winning a game like that either.

And this isn’t college. You don’t just put in your youngest player to get him experience.

Jake is better than average...

…he just doesn’t have the potential of a “dynasty”-level superstar QB. Thus, he’s not a Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, Tom Brady, Steve Young, or even Terry Bradshaw (if you want to go that far back). He’s also a step behind (in terms of talent) to Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, and probably Drew Brees and possibly even Donovan McNabb. You also can’t compare him to John Elway or even Brett Favre (though people do call them both gunslingers).

Regardless, Jake does have the potential to be a Superbowl QB as a game manager. Someone along the lines of a Ben Roethlisberger or even Trent Dilfer. He just won’t be inducted into the Hall of Fame when his career’s over. But he has helped take us to a Superbowl. He’s a proven winner…especially in the postseason (despite the Arizona game). And he deserves to keep his starting job…for now.

However, Jake is probably on the downside of his career now. I think he’ll bounce back okay from the Tommy John surgery this season. But even so, the Panthers need to start laying out some long-term plans regarding their future franchise QB. That’s going to take 2-3 years…which is about as long as Jake’s contract will likely last (unless he agrees to less money and a backup role mentoring a new guy).

I don’t think Matt Moore (or even Josh McCown) are the long-term answer either. The Panthers either need to spend a high draft pick on a really good QB 2 or 3 years from now. Or, they need to find themselves a proven free agent QB with veteran experience who won’t break the salary cap. Or, they need to raid another team’s roster to find a promising backup entering free agency and see if they can turn him into a starter…which is exactly what we did with acquring Jake Delhomme all those years ago.

But for now, stay the course…

Jake is proven. He’s far more reliable than unreliable. His stats and the Panthers’ success over Coach Fox’s tenure demonstrate it. So, ride him a bit further until a viable replacement is available. And that last part’s important, because even as people wanted us to chase Jay Cutler or “some mystery QB who was supposedly going to save us from Jake”…the truth is that we never had a chance at landing Cutler for what Denver would have required…and there really isn’t any other QB out there who’s going to help us as much as Jake still can.

My two-cents,

Welcome to the blog Blueverine

Sorry, I couldn’t vote for either of those options. Coming off a 12-4 season the Panthers are challengers int he NFC, I don’t care how last season ended. Replacing Delhomme with Moore in my opinion reduce those chances of making it to the SB. I bet if you polled the 21 other starters on the team who they want and trust to QB them they would pick Delhomme. Now is not the time to give a younger QB experience snaps beyond the preseason.

+1

…I didn’t vote either. Why?

1. I don’t think we keep Jake “forever and ever”…but we do keep him for the next 2-3 years. I don’t think he’ll see the end of the new contract he signed. But he’s a veteran. He’s a keeper. And there’s no one better at a price the Panthers can afford right now.

2. I agree with Jaxon that we can’t afford to “lease time” to an unproven backup right now…no matter how much potential Moore might have. We’re a playoff-calibre team right now. We also have 21 of 22 starters returning. You don’t mess with that from a personnel standpoint unless you’ve got someone who’s going to be an immediate improvement over the guy you’d be replacing. We certainly have no one like that at the QB position. So Jake is still the guy. And we can continue to develop Moore (and McCown) via the preseason and in their backup roles as they learn and consolidate Davidson’s offense.

I agree with the guys above.

If Jake Delhomme stays healthy, he’s probably going to stay with us till his late 30s. I know the Jake haters won’t like that, but it’s going to be necessary once and if we get our QB of the future. I know some people are high on Matt Moore, and I would love to give him the chance to start in a few years if he continues to showcase his arm. However, I would look to our future in the NFL Draft.

The best way in my opinion to replace a QB is to draft in the 1st round and give him a few years to develop. Sure you’ll have your Matt Ryans and your Joe Flaccos come in and take the helm of the team for you from time to time, but that doesn’t happen every day. I prefer a guy who’s been on the bench for a few years and knows his playbook, his teammates, and his division rivals.

But that's SUCH a strain on the cap...

since a backup QB can’t contribute anywhere else (unless he’s a really good scout team QB or something.)

I didn't vote either

I don’t want to keep Jake forever either, but for how much we’re paying him right now, no one’s going to replace him unless he doesn’t win games for us anymore. I’m sure McCown’s a solid starter, but I’m hoping that we bring in more competition at the QB, not just from late round draft picks, but maybe someone who’s proven to be pretty solid. I really liked Thigpen last season, but I don’t know what we can offer Chiefs at this point for him.

I'd be concerned...

About moving Thigpen to this kind of offense. Sure, he was great in the gadget “spread pistol” offense, but he was pretty terrible under center. The day you see the Panthers running the above mentioned spread is the day Fox isn’t here and problems go way deeper than a QB who doesn’t show up with his best stuff every game.

I know that we can't afford to just turn it over right now

I was trying to say like if we were blowing a team out and they had no chance to come back, or vice versa we should at least give Matty some time to get real game experience. And yeah I do think Jake can still help us win and hopefully get the Panthers a ring but I also think hes gonna decline fairly quickly because of what he already has physically. If we were to look to the draft next year and already knowing Foxie won’t use a first rounder on a QB who would ya’ll like to have?

by blueverinefan on Jun 4, 2009 10:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No one...

…I think we keep Jake as the starter again next year. And maybe even the year after that, as long as he stays healthy. We don’t have a 1st round pick next year since we traded it to grab Everette Brown. And, unless we somehow trade Peppers and snag such a pick, I don’t see us drafting a notable QB next year. Maybe the year after that, but I’d still expect him to sit and learn behind Delhomme initially.

Of course, that’s assuming we go after a new QB via the draft. It’s entirely possible (and maybe even more likely) that we get one through free agency. That’s how we acquired Delhomme in the first place, and it’s turned out pretty well for us since then.

I'd like

Jevan Snead, but no way we get him. That said, we have two guys who have proven that they can get it done. When Jake retires, we’ll probably sign a backup in free agency, aka Byron Leftwich, JP Losman, someone like that. Then we’ll probably pick up a developmental QB late in the draft, and then have an open competition. Whether either of the three veterans get it, or the rookie blows us away, we have options.
