Should the Panthers take a chance on Marvin Harrison?
Should the Panthers go after the vet Marvin Harrison? I don't know if Marvin is looking for more than the veteran min. but I think it could be a lost cost investment. The man still has some of the best hands in the NFL and he won't be asked to be the deep threat. Or do some of you feel as though we are set at WR? Please share your opinion on our current situation at WR.

I dont think we will sign Harrison but I would like to see someone with a track record signed

I don't think that makes sense for us.
He’d be redundant with Muhammad’s similar skillset, he could get upset if he didn’t get enough touches, and he would further hinder Jarrett’s development.

I havent completely given up on Jarrett but he hasnt impressed me enough to count on him

Yeah, but there is some credence to the notion that he needs more on-field reps if we want him to get better.

Yea Jarret is underrated
I want to see him get more playing time, he has great hands! Don’t you guys remember all those 3rd down catches he had last season, he saved us a couple times. Bringing Marvin Harrison in would just be like having another moose in the book and one is enough. If we leave him on the bench for too long hes never going to be the receiver we once thought he could be

And besides WR isn't the positon we need to be spending money on right now
Richard Marshall is going to be torn up early in the season, we need a vet in there that can man up, i’m not sure of the free agent cornerbacks but if there are any good ones that is where carolina should be looking

Jarrett made a whopping 6 catches in 9 games...
Frankly, I think we can replace that.

This is a completely different subject…I know there have been reports coming from camp that Jarrett has finally “gotten it” and will play better this year, but I am not going to hold my breath until I actually see the production. Combine the fact the Panthers don’t throw to the third WR that often (of course they haven’t had a reliable 3 WR) with Jarrett’s previous production and I am going to wait and see before I get too excited about him.
That being said, I still don’t want Marvin Harrison on the team.

On third downs, I meant to say.

The point is
we don’t need another WR taking reps away from Jarret. Give almost anyone enough playing time and they will get better, especially someone with talent like Jarret. All I want is 25 catches in the #3 spot, that might even be a stretch considering how much we run. But Jarret just needs to show enough to warrant keeping him when Moose retires.

I'm with you.
But Jarrett should certainly not be touted as an irreplaceable talent.

Correct, nobody is irreplaceable.
The all encompassing point, as it seems, is that Jarrett has more value to us than Harrison. While Harrison MAY provide a better short term option, he is not a long term solution.

No, NO, NO !!!
We don’t need a older, worn out WR like Harrison, whom was in my opinon a product of the system that he played with in Colts. Also we could have had T. Holt whom would have been a great pickup for us and aloud Moose to take a lighter role and save his body for later in the season. Secondly, even for a one yr deal it would still cost more than we have in salary cap flexibility; lets not forget we still have to sign our top picks from the draft as well. Muhammad has similar skills at this stage of his career and we already have him under contract. PLUS D. Jarrett has to step up this year and take the #3 WR spot and next season he has to be the #2 WR or simply be released an become another big NFL Draft Flop. MAN UP JARRETT it is your time to grab the brass ring.
We also have great up-coming guys such as L. Beavers, J. Carter back from injury, R. Robinson, just to name a few.
by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Jun 28, 2009 9:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Couldn't have afforded Holt
At the minimum, he went for $4 mil this year, and we just didn’t have that kind of salary cap space. We do, however, have enough room for the picks: not only do we not have a first-rounder, but there is a separate “rookie cap” segment of your cap space that must be set aside per NFL regulations.
Also, Beavers almost certainly isn’t ready to be an NFL wideout. If he makes the team (an unlikely event in and of itself), it’ll be as a return man, period.

As much as I hate agreeing so much, there is no way I want Marvin Harrison on the Carolina Panthers football team. Along with the 3-4 defense I would enjoy any talk of the Panther signing “X” free agent immediately after that person has been cut from another team to cease and desist as well.
I know Harrison got released a while back but I think we need to get some of the younger guys reps and see what they can do.

Haha...
You’re a member of the Braves SBN, so I’m sure you’re familiar with the term they use to describe such posts, but for everyone else: “rosterbation.”
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jun 29, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I don’t talk that much there. I have been super negative here lately though…just telling everyone what I don’t like. It happens everywhere I guess. A player gets let go and the next thing we know there is a fan post asking why doesn’t the team sign “X” player.
As far as Harrison goes, even if his skill set was not similar to Muhammad, I would still not want him on the roster. It is just a short term fix and would only serve to take a roster spot from a player who could actually contribute to the team beyond this year. The Panthers tried signing every old player in the league once before…I think we can all remember the Reggie White, Eric Swann, Sean Gilbert, and Chuck Smith defensive line and how that turned out.

Then again...
We got some pretty good production out of Marlon McCree and Shaun Williams before they faded into the mediocrity of old age.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jun 29, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is true. I can’t argue with that too much but I have something against older players. The sad part is that I think both of those players were actually in their twenties when they faded. Though Williams may have barely been 30.
by bengoodfella on Jun 29, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, Williams was 30 his last year; McCree 28.

If the money was right
I wouldn’t mind seeing Harrison in Carolina. If after a couple preseason games if the Panthers are not sold on either Jarrett or Robinson making an impact why not bring in a cagey vet for those 3rd down situations. His experience could be valuable.

But he was already fading for a better offense last year...
What are the odds he’ll bounce back?
Also, I’ve read that teams will probably hold off on signing Harrison until at least after Week 1 so his contract is not guaranteed for the full season.

I've seen Marvin Harrison play, but...
I never remember him blocking much. Wouldn’t fit a Carolina system if the WR can’t block. He goes down or runs out of bounds rather than take a hit. When’s the last time Smitty or Moose jumped out of bounds rather than picking up an extra 3 or 5 with crunch?
You smart data guys check me – does Harrison block?
by Barbados on Jun 29, 2009 4:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think he could be a good addtion
Harrison does go down and get out of bounds because he knows there is no need to take a big hit when you are not going to gain any additional yards. You get what you can and you get down. Plus Smitty has a lot more muscle and weight on him and I don’t even have to mention Moose and his body type. Marvin’s game is excellent route running and pass catching. Smitty’s is a combination of the deep ball and also taking a short pass and making a man miss and turning it into a big one. Marvin has not missed many games in his career until recently. I think you use a good weapon who has a chip on his shoulder that could possibly come cheap.

"Marvin’s game is excellent route running and pass catching..."
Isn’t that a carbon copy of what Muhammad does for us, likely at a lower price?

Good Point
Moose does a lot of those things. I feel he is a great asset in the red zone with his big body. I just hate to have to depend on two receivers to carry the load. I am not going to jump and call Jarrett a bust because for whatever reason he has not had many chances. But maybe it is his own fault, if you are showing the coaches in practice with your work ethic and preparation then they will have confidence in you. What I really want on my wish list is a receiving TE. We need someone to stretch the field. With the running game we have and the respect that Defenses have to give to it. A pass catching threat from TE should lead the team in receiving.
by Badazzyellaboy on Jun 29, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Barnidge fits that TE mold...
But in our offense, a TE has to run block, or defenses will know they’re coming in just to catch a pass.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

If you can't block you can't play
Now he would have to be able to do both. I thought since we got a new O coordinator the offense would change some, but it seems that we run the same offense as we did 2 years ago. I liked it with Walls at TE. I hope they involve Barnidge in O scheme. But we will see

We had a completely different team with Walls. We were a run oriented team and we definitely are now.

I don't know...
Harrison would probably make for a good possession receiver with potentially better hands than Moose. But Muhammad’s going to continue to be one of the best blocking WR in the league. Can’t say the same for Marvin.
by NSpicer on Jun 30, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They are very close.
I would agrue that Harrison has better hands, but Moose is at another level in blocking.
We do not need Harrison and we do not want him. If after week 1 he wants to sign with us for the vet min (not gonna happen), then maybe we do it.
