Top 10 Most Valuable Panthers - Current Team

We seem to be on a run of Top 10 'this' and 'that' recently so I thought I would keep it going with a post I found on MVN. This one is by Greg Trippiedi who appears to actually be a 'Skins fan so I will cut him a break for being so wrong! Greg has listed the Top 10 most valuable Panthers on the current roster. Now he doesn't clarify most valuable in what regard? Such as most valuable fantasy-wise? To winning in 2009? To the team in general or even on the free agent market. So I'm going to critique the list based on who is most important to winning in 2009:

#1: Steve Smith (MVN has at #5)

This is overall a tough decision to make and I know you could argue that we won two games without him last season. But would we really want to try and win without him over 16 games? Without Smith the Panther deep option dries up and teams could stack the box against the run. Smith is also a key playmaker that has pulled Panther wins out of the fire in the past. Without him I would not be so optimistic about 2009.

#2 LT Jordan Gross (MVN has at #1)

With the loss of some kep back-ups on the o-line I have to agree having Gross protect Jake's blind side is key. You could argue that Wharton is a very capable, experienced back-up but I think the pass protection would suffer which is something we do not want to have to worry about.

Star-divide

#3: RB DeAngelo Williams (MVN has at #2)

The only reason Williams is not #1 is because we have a very strong back-up in Jonathan Stewart. I actually wouldn't mind seeing Stewart start a game or two just to see what he can do.Yet in the end the best situation is having both of these guys available with Williams leading it off.

#4: QB Jake Delhomme (MVN did not have in Top 10)

We saw how a season can go without Delhomme in 2007 and it wasn't pretty. You could argue we have a more capable back-up in Josh McCown or Matt Moore but would we really want to find that out? My apologies to the Jake-haters but he is easily my #4 if not higher.

#5 LB Jon Beason (MVN has at #3)

I can agree with the argument that Beason is the heart and soul of the defense and without him we would be a very dead, uninspired bunch. My hope is that Ron Meeks can provide some of that lift as well and given our depth at LB missing Beason might not be so dramatic. Let me clarify though, I certainly don't want to play 2009 without the guy who very soon might be my favorite Panther.

#6: DE Julius Peppers (MVN has at #6)

I'm pretty sure the Panthers were prepared to play in 2009 without Pep but I am glad we won't try. For all the talk about his lack of desire and motivation I still like the idea of every OC on our schedule having to game plan for the 'at times' dominant DE. Without him our pass rush could be questionable at best depending on how the young players develop.

#7: CB Chris Gamble (MVN has at #6)

Gamble is our shut down corner and without him our secondary suddenly becomes very suspect (maybe it already is). With newly promoted starter Richard Marshall on the other side the Panthers need a steady starter against the high-powered passing games the Panthers will face this season.

#8: RT Jeff Otah (MVN did not have in top 10)

Otah is a key to the Panthers stout rushing attack that I expect to be dominant again in 2009. It was apparent our rushing attack suffered to a degree when the big guy was injured those few games as the rookie made a big impression. I'm predicting Otah's value to sky-rocket in 2009 as he mauls his way to future PB consideration.

#9: RB Jonathan Stewart (MVN has at #8)

For the same reasons Williams is on the list the Panther running game will be key to the 2009 season. As good as Williams is the fact Stewart is such a stud himself makes the Panther offense something every defense should worry about in 2009. I imagine a similar list in 2010 would have Stewart much higher after what I am expecting to be a break out season.

#10: K John Kasay (MVN did not have on list)

I know he missed the kick against the Giants but more often than not Kasay will hit those game winning kicks. I would hate to suddenly have to worry about the kicking game in 2009 should Kasay suddenly become unavailable. Finding a clutch kicker is hard to find on the waiver wire so I think Kasay will be key to several wins in 2009 with his steady leg. We might even look back and wonder why he wasn't higher up this list.

There you have it Panther fans. In case you care not to link over to the original post the three players MVN has on the list that I don't are C Ryan Kalil, LB Thomas Davis and CB Richard Marshall. These are all improtant guys but I'm thinking they just missed the list due to depth at the position should they become unavailable.

i disagree

I have done my share of Jake hating, but I have him at #1. When Jake is not on the field, some players literally do not seem to play as hard. The Panthers belief in their own ability to execute on game day takes a hit when Jake goes down. It’s hard for me to list Beason and Peppers as high because of the way our defense struggled down the stretch when Jake was leading our offense to multiple 30 point games. Smitty managed to let Jake play two games without him, and Jake still got it done. I beleive it is easier to win when any other player on the team has an off day than when the bad day belongs to Jake. One more thing, how valuable is Moose? He shows up and we have longer plays in the running game, Smitty has more yards per catch than at any other time in his career, Jarrett learns to catch and run routes, and Moose also goes for over 900 yards himself as he lives on as our all-time leading receiver.

You make good points

My thinking which I now realize I didn’t clarify was that I believe Josh McCown would fill in pretty good for Jake if given the chance. I realize we are all scarred from the David Carr fiasco but I think McCown could do well in the short term. I couldn’t argue with him being #1 though, the QB of any team SHOULD be the MVP of a team.

A couple questions:

“It was apparent our rushing attack suffered to a degree when the big guy was injured those few games…”

It was? We averaged 125.3 YPG on 4.5 YPC in those four games, not far off our season averages.

Also, what is this depth you speak of at C and CB? You really think a 7th-round pick who had never played center before last year is an adequate replacement for Kalil, who was the top player at the position in his entire class? And do you really not think there’s a big dropoff from Marshall to Wilson or Martin (who’s behind Wilson at this point?) I’d be scared if we had to deal with injuries at either one of those positions.

Good counterpoints

we were not as dominant running the ball to the right side as when Otah was in there. Maybe that is an incorrect impression.

What would be the order of your list MP?

In terms of long-term injuries we'd really struggle with

In no particular order:
Smith
Delhomme
Hoover (without knowing anything about how Fiammetta will do in the NFL)
Kalil
Any of the top 3 DTs
Either of the starters at CB
Chris Harris

Cop out.

Slap a name and a number next to each of ’em.

Ha...

OK, fine. I didn’t actually even mean to pick 10, specifically.

1. Smith
2. Delhomme
3. Gamble
4. Kalil
5, Marshall
6. Chris Harris
7. Kemo
8. Lewis
9. Hoover
10. Corv-Irv

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

Also

I think he wll become more important this year as we have lost players who helped out with the depth on the line. So the drop off will be more dramatic from him to his backup.

by jpow125 on Jun 25, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not necessarily...

He doesn’t really excel in pass pro, he’s just exceptionally strong in the run game. Schwartz profiles as the same type, but I think if either of our OTs go down long-term, they’d kick Wharton out to LT and move Beranardeau or Robinson into the lineup at LG. In that lineup, I don’t think we’d lose a ton.

Delhomme shouldnt be on that list and theres no way Williams shouldn’t be # 1. No one else on the offensive side of the ball shined like him last year and he didn’t even complain playing behind Fumbles Foster. This is my list
1.Williams
2. Stewart
3.Kalil
4.Otah
5. Harris
6. Smith
7.Lewis
8.Lloyd
9.Hoover
10. Kasay

Yes, because we all know how successful this team is without Jake under center.

.375 without him, .625 with him.

I don’t even know how to respond to a list that puts Rhys Lloyd as more important than John Kasay and just below Steve Smith, Jeff Otah as more important than Jordan Gross and doesn’t include Jon Beason, Peppers or Delhomme at all. Field position is important but the difference in Kasay and Lloyd isn’t worth that much. I would have liked it better if the list was in no certain order.

I dislike Jake as much anyone else does at times and I was there for the 6 interception massacre, but we have actual evidence (the 2007 year) of how this team does without him.

out of the players listed Delhomme would be the player that we could most easily do with out

by Heyward is the next crime dog on Jun 25, 2009 1:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Absurd.

Look at his and McCown’s careers and tell me how we could suitably replace Delhomme.

Actually we don’t need Steve Smith either. We went 2-0 last year without him. I say trade him.

by bengoodfella on Jun 25, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How about

Maake Kemoeatu? Our rush defense wasn’t so great with him out last year and I don’t think we have much depth there either.

“If we lose X, we’re screwed”

My top 10:

1. Steve Smith
2. Delhomme
3. Gamble
4. Kemo
5. Kalil
6. Harris
7. Beason
8. Gross
9. Otah
10. D. Williams

Wow Bomb, Jake is #2?

I’m surprised you have him on the list ;) I bet Nate Salley could sub for Harris with little drop off. Otherwise can’t argue with it.

Its funny how there are so many varied opinions in this comments thread. Its actually a hard thing to rank.

I was thinking about Salley...

And while I think he’d provide an adequate replacement for Godfrey, I don’t know if he could step in and be the kind of presence Harris is in the lineup. He’s nowhere near as strong a tackler, and it’s not like there’s a huge upgrade in coverage ability.

salley vs. harris

i have to agree with MP…he didn’t finish the year as strong as he started i but Harris was a beast of a tackler and forced ALOT of fumbles or hopped on them. There’s a reason we spent some loot to snag him frim Chi. Salley is good, don’t get me wrong but we’d get burnt even worse if he started as of right now.
I do think we’re alot deeper at safety than we are CB however. But maaaaan am I glad Lucas is gone…that dude has just been sliding by as long as he had been here.

As far as Jake goes…i don’t even know how to address it…his lackluster performance in the playoffs really hurt. However what have we ever done without him? He’s far better than Kerry Collins ever was …lol and that’s alot coming from me because i’m also a Penn St fan.

I would love to see Matt Moore get a chance in the future….I mean all of our guys are getting older…Steve…Moose…we have to do something now before we need more talent at skill positions. I honestly think Moore could be another Tony Romo-esque story in the future.
