Panthers Position Review – Defensive Tackle
Kemo is one of the unsung players of the Panther defense whom I came to appreciate a lot more last season when he missed the last few games. You may recall the Panther defense got run all over in that stretch. The big guy is a pure run stopper (36 tackles, 31 solo) whos job is simply to occupy two or more blockers and clog up the middle running lanes. He remains a favorite of the Panthers staff and there is no doubt he will start at LDT come game one.
Damione Lewis 6-2 301 9th yr;
Though Lewis has performed better in a reserve role in his first season in
I give Irvin the inside track on one of the back-up spots simply because the Panthers spent a 3rd round draft pick on him. Irvin was known more as a run stopper in college, a ‘high-motor’ guy who could potentially develop into a pass rusher if he can combine his long arms with improved technique. Irvin was not highly recruited going into college yet he beat the odds to get to where he is today. I wouldn’t be surprised if that work ethic resulted in a starting assignment by the end of the 2009 season. He would have to completely bomb in TC to not make the roster. Roster Chance: 95%
Nick Hayden 6-4 292 02/04/1986 1 yr,
After spending most of his 2008 rookie season on the Panthers practice squad he finally got the call to replace the injured Damione Lewis and played in the final two games of the 2008 season. Though he didn’t do too much (3 tackles total) in those games he did enough to warrant continued execution of his contract. Whether that results in a roster spot come September though is anything but a sure thing. Roster chance: 60%
Favorite is the only remaining guy on this list I have heard of and he comes into
Williams is a 2nd year player who has yet to play a down in the NFL. Williams spent most of the 2008 preseason with
Kershaw looks like an undersized DT looking to score a quick payday at TC for as long as he can ride the pony. I can’t think of a scenario where I guy like this makes the roster on his first shot. His best shot will be the practice squad at best. Roster Chance: 1%
Lonnie Harvey 6-3 342 UDFA Morgan State
UPDATE: I'll leave these guys for posterity, but both were waived on 6/26 to accommodate the signings of Mike Goodson and Tony Fiammetta.
Though he only shows one season of NFL experience he has played in 2 games across two seasons for the Bears. Oshinowo has since bounced around a few training camps since the two year dance with the Bears. The Panthers signed him away from the Eagles PS shortly after the 2008 season ended. He’s a smart guy with a EE degree who could surprise anyone taking him lightly in camp. Still the odds are very low. Roster Chances: 5%
Patrick McDonald 6-2 265 1 yr
McDonald is a former CFL player that must be part of the Canadian intern program? He seems too small to play DT in the NFL and being from
Update for McDonald: Hat Tip to MP for jogging my memory. McDonald was brought in to compete for the long snapping position though he is listed as a DT. You may recall that our 2008 long snapper Jason Kyle was listed as a LB.

Is this your first positional review in a series?
Or are there others? Do you plan on doing more of these? I found it to be interesting reading material during an otherwise boring offseason and I am one of the few fans that loves to watch every quarter of preseason games in order to find out our depth and see if we have any overlooked stars in the making. The positional battles are exciting.

Actually, the kickers were done a month or so back...
But yes, it’s part of a series. I’ll have a look at the LBs up soon.

A few more thoughts...
Favorite received one of the highest signing bonuses in this year’s UFA class ($20K+), so obviously the team liked something they saw at some point.
Oshinowo was once projected as the best true NT in his draft class. Hasn’t translated yet, but I suppose it could.
McDonald, I think, was signed more for his long-snapping ability than for his potential on the DL. Or maybe they wanted to give a guy a shot who could LS and do something else. Either way, the fact that he’s got LS experience is something worth mentioning.

Good bits of info.
Thanks for that.

Thanks for jogging my memory MP
I knew there was something strange about him being listed as a DT at that size. I’ve updated the post. Strange his Panther bio doesn’t mention his ability to play LS.

They talked about it when he signed...
They don’t usually tend to do a great job with bios for UFA types, or even really the rookies during their first year.

I agree good post
Hey love the review and info; plus the grades seem pretty much spot on unless something goes totally wrong in training camp.

How did I not know that Ma'ake went to Utah?
That gives us three Utes as our top players on the roster, who all also played together in college. That’s just weird for a mid-major. It’s not like we’ve got three guys from USC who played together (we have two, but only one is a starter).
It’s Utah, fer crissake.

Good post! :D
Corvey Irvin should take over the majority snaps for Lewis at some point in the season I believe. I just don’t think the coaches will allow him to get beat up on too much. Basically, we’re at the same point we were at last year. Both of the starters are only average, and the depth chart below them is very unproven.
I blame Julius Peppers.

Kemoeatu is much more than average.
He’s a great run-stuffer, and he’d start for most any team in the league. We’ve been near the top of the league in YPA allowed since he came on board.

Jon Beason also isn't anywhere NEAR as much of a stud so quickly if Kemo (and Jenks, before he left) weren't there to occupy blockers.

Me too!
Also, I had a hangnail last night that was Julius Peppers’ fault. And my coffee was kind of weak this morning.
Damn that Julius Peppers!

If Kemo is so good why does Lewis have better numbers than him? Kemo is not all that great but compared to a rather weak group of DT’s he stands out. Lewis is by far and away the best DT they have had passing and rushing since Jenkins got ran out of town. Hayden looked terrible last year when he had to fill in, they ran over, through, and around him. Im really worried about the Panthers on the interior D line. They did nothing to improve a unit that became beat up and gave away points at the end of the season.
by D.W.G. on Jun 17, 2009 3:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Because they don't track stats for occupying blockers. The quality of a DT is not about his numbers.
And Hayden wasn’t supposed to make an impact right away. Hopefully he’s more ready this year after a full NFL offseason training program.
Also, how do you call using a 3rd-round pick on a DT and signing one of the most expensive UFAs in this year’s class who also plays the position “doing nothing?”

Here are some numbers for you, by the way...
DT #1: 15 G, 43 tackles (33 solo), 3.5 sacks, 1 FF, 1 FR, 5 PBU
DT #2: 16 G, 50 tackles (37 solo), 3.5 sacks, 1 FF, 0 FR, 2 PBU
Care to take a guess at the identity of these two players (who must be pretty close to the same ability, since their numbers are nearly identical.)

DT #1: Damione Lewis
DT #2: Kris Jenkins
I love a good quiz

Well done, sir.
Jenkins was an All-Pro, while Lewis is “only average.”

Not the Pro Bowl.
All-Pro. As in voted on by the AP. And Jenkins was one of the most impactful players at his position in the league, stats or no stats. He totally turned their run D around.

Like you said, it’s not just about the stats, and popularity or not, I think most people would take Jenkins over Lewis. Jenkins is great at occupying blockers, pushing O-lineman back, and stuffing the run, allowing the linebackers more room.

I doubt this means anything at this point...
but Oshinowo (not Irvin, Favorite, or Williams) was running with the second group in this video. So maybe his percentage might be raised from 5% to 10%. :)

Also I don’t see McDonald in that video. So he’s probably as much of a DT as Jason Kyle was a LB.

Oshinowo has been with the team longest.
One might expect that so early in the offseason.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

I don't know why one might expect that
given that there are new coaches all around, with both the coordinator and the position coach.
That said, I don’t think there’s any reason to look at minicamp depth charts as even remotely indicative of training camp depth charts, which themselves don’t acurately reflect “active 45” depth charts.

Because they know "what he brings to the table..."
and Fox, particularly, likes making kids who aren’t going to start off the bat pay their dues. Hell, it could just be them throwing a bone to the guy they know best at this point.

Thats interesting
I wouldn’t say it means nothing but certainly it could change quickly. Oshi was getting his turn with the 2s and who knows, his chances might be improving. He’s fairly big (as DT’s go) smart and experienced. That may be just what the Panthers want behind Kemo in case of injury.

I read an article at some point during the offseason...
That said he had been rated as the best true NT in his draft class.
