Mike Goodson AKA "Curveball"

"Panthers rookie RB Goodson turning heads"

If Goodson can stay healthy, he could turn out to be a diamond in the rough.  In his own words "I kind of think I can be curveball guy, Jonathan is a bruiser and DeAngelo is a slasher and I'm just trying to bring a little speed to the game, trying to add another element".

According to the Shelby Star the team is using him quite a bit as a slot receiver.  "I'm excited about that because lining up in the slot causes a mismatch against a lot of linebackers and lets me use my speed," he said.  How awesome would that be to have a shifty, speed guy returning kicks, in the slot, and potentially wearing out defenses in the 4th that just took a Stewart/Deangello beating?

I really hope he lives up to the hype!

Here's the only concern...

Goodson is just the type of player who could look great “in underwear” and then struggle some once the pads go on and hitting goes live. Still, I hope we can get him something like 2-3 touches a game on offense, and he’s got the versatility to allow those touches to come in different areas and make a dynamic impact on the offense.

Although...

he might well look good in underwear, too. Not that I’d be particularly interested. :)

Assuming he sees playing time...

I’m wondering if we use Goodson some in the wildcat formation and other “trick” or “gadget” plays. Beyond that, he’s probably a special teams player (fulfilling Nick Goings former role). If he comes in as a slot receiver, that probably means Moose or Jarrett aren’t on the field, because we tend to throw out of fewer four receiver sets…and even then, we typically use a TE rather than another WR.

So, I’m still wondering where and how we’ll use Goodson. He certainly can serve as an able backup in the run game and as an extra receiver. But outside of special teams and the occasional “gadget” play, I’m just not sure he’ll see a lot of playing time. Barring injury to the guys ahead of him on the depth chart, of course.

Just my two-cents,
—Neil

Maybe we will see some new plays in the 2009 offense?

Wow, that would be unusual

He has a lot of competition even as a return guy

So he definitely will have to turn some heads in camp and preseason to get on the field in the regular season. But it also seems like he is creating a buzz on the team and getting an awful lot of press coverage for a guy barried on the depth chart..

But, you’d hope for some production out of a 4th-rounder, particularly one who wasn’t particularly highly regarded. Now that may sound counter-intuitive, but my point is I hope they had something specific (plays, packages, etc.) in mind when they drafted him given he’s not going to be the all-around back you can build a team around.

I agree

He, Goodson, seems to be a guy that can do a lot and defenses will have to be ready for. And that is of course after they have to focus on stopping D-Lo, Stew, and Smitty. He will bring versitility to the team, a Reggie Bush, Leon Washington, Darren Sproles type.

And there are even lesser examples...

If he could perform even like a Jerome Harrison or a Fred Jackson, that would be a nice contribution.

Exactly my thoughts MP

though I wonder if Fox has it in him to allow trick plays. It seems only once in a blue moon that Fox pulls something out of his sleeve. I’d like to see the end-around to Smith come back. One thing that’s be cool is a 3-wide set with Steve in the slot to the right, Moose out wide to the right, and Goodson wide to the left. End around to Steve, who hands it Goodson going the other way with Moose and the TE ahead. How many people think that’s something we could use to effect?

The problem with the trick plays...

Is that it sets you up for potential big losses. As worried as people are about Jake’s abilities, you’d think they’d want to avoid risking putting us in a 3rd-and-long hole.

Hm.

It could work. With Goodson’s “eye popping speed” and of course Smitty’s speed and maneuverability. But as MP suggests below, ‘trick plays’ have a low percentage of working. I think they would need to bait the defense a few times—lining up in that particular formation but running normal plays. Then, after the opposing defense has seen the line up a couple times in the game— BAM!! We hit them with it :)

by boywonderncsu on Jun 3, 2009 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

That's why I brought up...

…the wildcat formation. The Panthers have run it multiple times in multiple games. If they lined up in that set with Goodson as well as Deangelo in the mix, it might make for an even more interesting “trick” play. Overall, the inclusion of Goodson along with Deangelo and even Smith could keep defenses guessing. And any one of them could burn you.

by NSpicer on Jun 3, 2009 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking about this too

Maybe give Deangelo the option to read the defense and keep it or toss it to Goodson??? Kinda like what Vick and Dunn use to do to burn us? But then does Deangelo have the ability to complete a short pass?

Actually… What are we talking about? Fox will never pull out this type of trickery.

Not with an actual QB we can use...

who’s better than, say, Chris Weinke.

Oh...

And DeAngelo was 0-2 passing in college.

I get trick plays are dangerous

but the end-around to Steve was a fairly simple play, and it worked. Then over the past two years, it seems like we just forgot about it. I’d just like to see it come back, with a new curve ;)

by Flowing Willow on Jun 4, 2009 2:37 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah...

I could see a reverse between Smith and Goodson (if they’re both on the field) working pretty effectively…especially if the defense is already tired from chasing Deangelo and getting hammered by Stewart. No doubt, we’ve got a lot of weapons offensively. We just have to use them in the right way and at the right time.

by NSpicer on Jun 4, 2009 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions

all assuming Goodson can play with the big boys of course

True...

He’s got to make the team first. And then he’s got to make the first team to be on the field with those guys during such a play.
