CSR Reviews the NFC South Draft Grades

Let's go back to a link I used earlier in the week from ESPN. I like this analysis in that it averages the draft grades of 9 popular or well-known NFL authorities to better level the overall opinion. So you can quickly see that on average the Panthers draft was rated second best in the division. So let's look at the grades assigned to our division foes and see if we should be worried about their challenge to our division crown:

Falcons_peria_jerry_medium
#1 Atlanta Falcons (2.96) Solid B

The Falcons targeted their defense early and often, first with the selection of highly rated DT Peria Jerry. They then added three players to the defensive backfield in S William Moore and CB's Chris Owen and Will Middleton. The top 5 is rounded out with DE Lawrence Sidbury, a guy many of us at CSR had hoped would end up in Carolina blue.

The Falcons know that in order to beat the Panthers twice in 2009 they had to upgrade the run defense. In addition to a DT though they really needed a stand out LB but failed to get one. Jerry will be real good one day but he will need time to develop. Moore is known as a big hitter but lacks great coverage skills. Sidbury may actually have the biggest impact of these rookies in 2009 as his speed could spell trouble for our pass protection. But in the end I still think the Panthers will be able to run the ball against the Falcons and hopefully keep Matt Ryan off the field as much as possible. So overall I'm not too worried about what the Falcons have done for the 2009 season.

Saints_malcolm_jenkins_medium
#3 New Orleans Saints (2.30) Solid C

The Achilles heel of the Saints for the past couple seasons has been their defensive backfield so in turn they took the CB most people had at the top of their board Malcolm  Jenkins. He should be a player for years to come so it was a good selection. From there they added a safety in Chip Vaughn and LB Stanley Arnoux, both former WF Deacons. Jenkins could provide a bit of a throttle on the Panther passing game and they already had a fairly good front line to deal with the Panther rushing game. Overall though I think its safe to say one guy isn't going to improve the defense enough to keep the Panthers from putting a good many points on the board. In 2009 I can see both games with the Saints playing out like 2008 where it's all about who can outscore the other. I like our chances of sweeping the Saints yet again.

Bucs_josh_freeman_medium
#4 Tampa Bay Bucs (2.00) Low C bordering on D

Was anyone else puzzled that the Bucs traded up two picks to grab QB Josh Freeman at #17? Was Panthers GM Marty Hurney calling around to trade up in front of the Bucs to grab Freeman, only to make them over pay? That's just a guess by why else would they do that? You might recall in the SBN mock draft that Freeman was still there when we picked at #59. Freeman may end up being a great NFL QB but I have no fear of that in 2009. In fact I really hope he starts as the Panthers will certainly bring the pressure in hopes of rattling the rookie.

Though the Bucs really needed more help on offense they instead added to the defense with their next two picks, DT Roy Miller and DE Kyle Moore. Miller is strong enough to start right away and could add to an already stout defense. I don't see any other picks that will get on the field in 2009. Overall I'm betting the change in QB and defensive scheme causes the Bucs to regress a bit in 2009 and therefore allows the Panthers a good chance to sweep them for the first time since the 2006 season.

Summary

It should be no surprise that given how explosive this division is on offense (outside of the Bucs) that all four teams targeted their defense in the draft. The Panthers have to feel good that in spite of having the toughest schedule in the division they should still do well within the division, a key to defending the crown. So my early division predictions are:

Panthers - Division Winner

Falcons

Saints

Bucs

while i agree with the overall story ,but the saints’ biggest change on defense is the new defensive coach gregg williams. he was brought in to spice things up,so to say that"one guy isn’t gonna ….’ ,it’s gregg wiliams + sharper + greere + jenkins + porter + vaughn + a healthy dan morgan, that’s more than one guy

There's a lotta old on that list...

Sharper is like 900, Greer could well flop just as David has done, Morgan has shown he’s not a high-end NFL player anymore…

my point

is that 6 of the saints back 7 will be new , under a new system ,and while no one knows if they will work out, it ‘s a major overhaul. the old rules don’t apply, the saints did the most of all the nfc south teams to help their defense. dan morgan may surprise you .

Dan Morgan will play at a high level I have no doubt

Its just for how long? He hasn’t played an entire season since 2003. He’s one concussion from the funny farm. Don’t get me wrong, one of my all-time favorite Panthers. His 20 tackles in the SB is one for the ages. Hate to see him in a Saints uni.

i know what you mean,

like i hated to see jake or, sam mills in Carolina blue. boy that was a great effort by dan in the SB. the saints are stacked at weakside LB (where dan should play for the saints) so he won’t have to be a every down guy, gregg williams likes to rotate guys, so he should fit in nice.

I hate to say it, I don't think he'll last for long.

Dan Morgan needs to stay retired. He opened up those 2 restaurants in Charlotte last I heard, and I bet it put him in the hole and that’s why he’s coming out of retirement. I just hope that nothing bad happens to him.

Good luck Morgan, hope you have plenty of great games, but not against the Panthers :p

25!

The Panthers’ coaching staff gave him credit for 25 during the film review.

Bah! How about 18 instead? Or even 11?

The official NFL Super Bowl stats credit him with 11 solo tackles and 7 assists. The problem is that you can pile up “assisted tackles” without any regard for the facts. They aren’t actually kept very good track of by the official statistics organizations, they’re tracked and supplied by the individual teams. So if he fell down next to the tackle, they can give him an assist. Simply put, they aren’t reliable, and they shouldn’t count as “tackles” with the same weight as solo tackles.

Dan’s a great player who played a great game in the super bowl. But 25 tackles? That’s fiction.

I disagree...

frankly, I’ll take the word of the coaches who had the time to review each play, rather than making a snap decision immediately after the play.

25 or 125

i ve watched the game several times, the guy played his ass off, it was an extraordinary effort.

I think our D got a lot better

But it probably wouldn’t be a quantum leap this year. But still….worry!

LOL, I'm not so sure about that.

I think both our defenses got better, but I think the biggest difference is our offense got better by adding Gonzo plus you have to remember Ryan (this is scary) is getting better. CAR will need a TOP differential of 4+ minutes and a huge day from Steve Smith and those RBs. Not unheard of, but I don’t think it’s a game you can check mark a win in…

You know what I'm hoping for?

Sophomore slump.

Man, I really hope that Ryan regresses some. I think there’s about exactly zero chance of that, but I’m crossing my fingers SO HARD!!!

Steven Jackson doesn't play for you.

And he certainly doesn’t play defense.

I like Morgan but.....

He can’t stay healthy. I remember this one time where i had a bet with my dad about Morgan. If he stayed healthy for at least 12 games, I got a free milkshake at Cookout. If he didn’t, I was buying. Morgan made it three games.
