The Focus of the 2009 NFL Draft

I have been contacted earlier by a guy who wished to know how the Panthers to will draft in 2009. I thought it would be a good article to write, so here you go.

Unlike most teams in the league, the Carolina Panthers are strong in a lot of areas coming into the draft. With the exception of Ken Lucas, we have retained all our starters on both sides of the ball. That's huge considering our team tied the New York Giants for the best record in the NFC last year.

However, the Panthers lost key backup players along the offensive line in Geoff Hangartner, Frank Omiyale, and Jeremy Bridges, guys that will need to be replaced. The defensive line also remains a weakness, one that may show even more if Julius Peppers is traded. We are also in need of a kick returner and a 3rd corner to develop under starters Chris Gamble and Richard Marshall. Finally, they will need to handle all of these needs with only 5 picks in the 2nd through 6th rounds. It's a tall order to put up.

Star-divide

In the 2009 Draft, I expect the Panthers to focus their draft on the defensive line. The Panthers rotational scheme worked wonders during the first half of 08, holding rushers like LaDainian Tomlinson, Matt Forte, Adrian Peterson, and Michael Turner under 100 yards. However, the defensive line slowed and became vulnerable against the run during the 2nd half of the season, highlighted by Derrick Ward's 215 rushing total in week 16. You can expect the Panthers to try to fix this by signing a DT or DE in the 2nd round. I covered the DT options we'll have in the 2nd round in my previous article, and I expect to cover the DE positions soon.

After the 2nd round, it will be all about drafting the best player on the board. We had a nice 1st round ILB drop to us in the 3rd round last year. His name was Dan Conner, and he'll be an eventual replacement for Na'il Diggs at outside linebacker when he finishes his career. We can only be so successful with 5 picks in the draft this year, but with a few good value picks like Dan Conner we nail us some good starters and young talent that will help the Panthers remain the most underrated franchise in the NFL.

Now then, with all of that being said the X factor going into the NFL Draft will be whether or not Julius Peppers can/will be traded. In spite of telling the team a few months ago that he wants a 'solution that will work out for both sides,' he still has not signed his franchise tag. Obviously, a trade would help out the Panthers tremendously. We would get a 1st round draft pick, and it will clear up 16.7 million in cap space we can use to sign our rookies. If we trade into the first round, everything changes.

Let's say just for an example that Julius Peppers is traded to the Broncos for their 1st round pick, 12# pick overall. Depending on the flow of the draft, we might have a chance at landing a franchise QB in Mark Sanchez. If Michael Crabtree falls, the Panthers might shore up the 2nd receiver spot beside Steve Smith. There are at least 3 defensive ends in Brian Orakpo, Michael Johnson, and Everette Brown that will be more than worthy of taking at that spot. It will open the Panthers a whole lot more in what they want to do, though the Panthers will still focus their draft around the defensive line.

If anything is certain, the worst thing about the upcoming draft will be waiting for it. Be sure to tune in to Cat Scratch Reader on April 25th for the NFL Draft. We'll be here to breakdown the decisions of the Panthers and talk about the upcoming season.

Stay strong my friends. The offseason can't last forever.

Good stuff

And I agree, the draft should be centered about the d-line ESPECIALLY at defensive tackle IF Peppers is not traded (still praying that he wil be).

from

here

Boston College defensive lineman B.J. Raji was inching toward top-five status before reports of his positive drug test at the combine. Now he might slip out of the first round.

Drug test, fine. If he falls, I think the Panthers have to take him.

He won't fall that far

plus I heard the some of the failed test rumors were not true, at least the ones involving steroids. If I was one of those players I would be pissed because those test results should be kept confidential within the NFL.

Agreed.

I’d be highly upset if I was him. If I was the commissioner, I would take the initiative and make a policy for situations like this. Set punishments for those who break confidential information, information that should only be divulged to an interested NFL team.

Heard that

but Raji wasn’t mentioned in the “nothing to worry about” crew.

QB

Give Matt a chance! If the Panthers can shore up the defense, the running game should be enough to take over. Then it’s game management, with the occasional play-action bomb to keep them honest.

Defense

Biggest thing we need during the draft is DT or DE….at least backups in both positions. IF Peppers does play, we still need backups for his spot and the middle. I don’t want to see another 200+ running game against us.

Great article Rev!

I completely agree that DL is the pick in the 2nd round followed by best available at say DT, DE, CB, and C.

Raji may drop, but not that much. At worst mid 1st round.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them go CB in the 2nd round

Given all the passing-based offenses we face evey year we need three strong CB’s since we play a nickle and dime package so much

I would be sad.

Though I agree that we do need a 3rd CB, I would be fairly irritated if they took him in the 2nd round. There is just too much D-Line talent in the 2nd round for us to pass up. I remain vigilant that we should draft a DT like Ron Brace or Fili Moula. That would be the best decision to help our team. Hopefully John Fox realizes that as well.

CB in the 2nd

The only way I see us getting a CB in the 2nd round is if there is a run on DT’s before we pick and if a talent (Alphonso Smith?) drops to us at #59.

I agree.

If there is a run on DT’s and such a talent does drop then at some point you do have to pick the more valuable player. I’m not a coach, but I heard some talk of Richard Marshall not having what it takes to start in this league. If that’s true, then the Panthers might roll that way if the flow of the draft dictates that such a move be made.

This draft should be all about revamping the defense.

the offense is is okay shape and with a couple of young guys stepping up the panthers can replace the backups they lost. but the d-line is in need a a serious overhaul.

Bad spellers of the world untie.

Draft

I agree with Rev about strengthening the D…especially D-line (DT…#1 priority). And thanks for mentioning Dan Connor….that injury caused everyone to forget abouthim, but he WILL be an impact linebacker, eventually. But when do the Panthers address QB?? If we forget all about Jake’s 6 turnover playoff game (and how can we!), the bottom line is, he still is turning 35, and has had elbow surgery on his throwing arm! He already had limited arm strength (how amny times does a wide open Steve Smith have to slow up and wait for a long one, only to the DB recover and break it up!) I love Jake’s heart, but when does Carolina look at the very near future QB? Sorry, but McNown & Moore do not inspire confidence!

Thanks for all the comments guys!

I really appreciate it! As long as you guys keep reading my articles, I’ll keep shelling them out!

I think Everette Brown offers the best fit

Michael Johnson is a guy who could perform extremely well or bust out because he’s not consistent play to play. I think there’s no way Orakpo falls to you.
