Panthers Waste No Time Signing UDFA's
Darin Gantt has been on the ball updating the Panthers UDFA's signings. Here's the first group:
So far, they've agreed with:
-- Purdue LB Anthony Heygood
-- Pittsburgh C-G C.J. Davis
-- Wesley College KR-WR Larry Beavers (GM Marty Hurney went to Delaware's pro day to watch this kid, who averaged 39.5 yards per KOR last year, with 10 TDs).
-- Rutgers TE Kevin Brock
-- Louisiana-Lafayette WR Jason Chery
-- UConn C Keith Grey
Surprisingly no QB yet. Here's the second group:
T Gerald Cadogan, Penn State (one of the top undrafted rookies)
-- LB Brit Miller, Illinois
-- QB Hunter Cantwell, Louisville
-- RB Jamall Lee, Bishop's College (Canada) This kid ran a 4.39 40 and had a 44-inch vertical at the CFL evaluation camp. Not sure what the exchange rate makes that, however.
Anyone have any insight on these guys? MSU's QB Brian Hoyer went undrafted and given the Panthers made a special visit up there I'm surprised he's not on the list yet.

It seems there is a big push
to upgrade the return games. Ryne Robinson better bring his A-game this year

Or...
It’s a very specialized position in which a guy can contribute without having to be a well-rounded player in other aspects of his game. Kind of like a long-snapper.

I agree
At first I did not like the Goodson pick, but after thinking about it as the day went on (and who they ended up drafting later) I cannot argue. Goodson has a chance to be like Bradshaw was for the G-men. Plus He and Captain will push Robinson. Competition will bring out the best in these guys.
Will Parker
I can't argue with the players picked
only on where they were taken and whether they might have been there later. Of course if you like a guy sometimes you get him when you can…we shall see come TC

Everyone is giving us a 'C'
Because of giving up the 1st rounder. They just don’t understand Furney. Every draft they have that future 1st round pick in their pocket and throw it like a trump card if they think its worth it. I thought it was a good move last year. This year still remains to be seen but I like Bill Polians answer to getting “C” on their draft grades. Something like “We’ll keep getting C’s and keep going to the playoffs.”

Here's some info on C-G CJ Davis
Although he’s leaving the University of Pittsburgh, offensive lineman C.J. Davis will still be a Panther. The 6-foot-2, 307-pound lineman told Scout.com that he has agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers as he begins his NFL career.
Davis took a risk during his senior year, switching positions in mid-season to help his team. Despite lining up at guard as a starter since the middle of his freshman year, Davis moved to center even though he hadn’t played the position since his freshman year of high school.
That versatility will now be an asset in the NFL. And Davis showed that he can capably handle either spot, earning All-Big East honors his senior year.
You never know where you will find the o-line depth. To get the back-up center as a UDFA would be sweet.

But...
Bernardeau has a year of experience in the system filling that same interior lineman backup role. That, and the fact that they invested a pick in him, tells me he’ll have a leg and a half up, at least.

Two of the guys
Cantwell really struggled the past season+ with Louisville. It might be the coaching… I think they went to a new coach, and saw Brohm struggle & then Cantwell. Not certain though, the coaching change might’ve happened before. There was a time when Cantwell was considered a top-10 pick (way before the season began), but he imploded. If he can get it together…
Meanwhile, Cadogan was one of the top remaining prospects (considered a 4th rounder or so)… not quite sure why he fell. I’m excited to see how he performs… could be a UDFA steal. Of course, he fell for a reason (not sure what, but something was up) and go just be another TC body… I guess we’ll see.

According to Mocking the Draft
9. Anthony Heygood OLB, Purdue, 6’1, 230
Top 10 UDFA coming out of this years draft. We do need depth just for roster but I think even with the roster he could start off practice squad and impress our coaches. I think working under Beason, Davis, and Diggs will create a stable learning environment that will only make him better.
And...
we have a spot to replace Donte Curry, although I’d imagine Connor is ticketed for that as of now.

Cadogen Talk from the Black Shoes Diaries
“I can’t believe Cadogan is still on the board…”
“1) Cadogen went undrafted??”
People seem astonished. He can work with Conner since they both got a little PSU in them.
No worries
posting is always good.
Not a PSU fan or anything, but I’m surprised Cadogen went undrafted as well.

4th QB is for Training camp?
If I remember, there was something about having to have a fourth to work all the drills?

They have had 4 QB's the past 2 TC's when I was there
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
The QB from Louisville was understood to have NFL arm.
At least that’s where I’m reading from Rotoworld and other sites. Might as well throw him into training camp! Who knows what can happen?

Jemall Lee is also an important sign.
His father was the last Canadian to lead the CFL in rushing yards in 1988. I see him described as a ‘freakish athlete.’
Maybe we’ll have Triple Trouble this year? You never know.

And from Youtube, here is a video of him being interviewed by an Aussie
He seems like a cool guy. I like him!

Hey guys
I have seen Jamall Lee play quite a bit with Bishop’s. The kid has legit talent. His biggest problem will be adjusting to the NFL style of football, but with some good coaching I think he will be a good player for the Panthers in a couple years.
I was hoping the Eagles would sign him but oh well. You guys should be excited about him.

About Chery.......
Here’s some info about Jason Chery. The article is a UL-Lafayette release & includes a couple other athletes as well. What it doesn’t mention is a game he had last season where he scored 5 touchdowns……..I believe 3 were on returns, and 2 by pass……..this was by half-time. He’s a burner who can play, though he’s not very big. Check out the following link.

GEAUX PANTHERS!!!
Also...
Cherry is a special teams stud. Good returner, and he was probably the best kick coverage guy in this college draft. He also impressed at the postseason all-star games with his receiving ability.
From the Dallas Morning News:
“Jason Cherry of Louisiana-Lafayette was a wide receiver by trade but an elite special-teams player through hard work. In addition to his 60 career tackles, he blocked two kicks, recovered two fumbles and forced a fumble on special teams. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown in his career.”

Someone else mentioned...
Karl Hankton. But he can return, too!

...
No matter what the agent claims he heard, he ain’t setting the depth chart. Sure, he’s A backup to Gross as a fellow OT, but he’s certainly not the #2 guy there in my book until at least minicamp.

Yeah
didn’t we hear that DJ Hackett was “guaranteed” the to be the 2nd WR last year. We all know how that turned out. :)
An Observation
Having looked at the profiles for most all of our picks and UFAs (if that list is final), we ended up with quite a few players whose stock fell over the course of the season, particularly among the UFAs/late-rounders. What that means, precisely, I don’t know, but with the way Hurney referenced how they’d viewed/scouted Irvin “since day one,” one might think they tend to be more rational and long-term based in their couting rather than teams who respond to sone-season wonders who aren’t consistenly productive.
The Cadagan pick up is a good one
and we seem to have added some dynamic players in Chery, Beavers and Jamall Lee. Should be a fun TC to watch!

Stocks Falling
I think we did not take the picks in the right order but we got value that has been there in a lot of players. The players whose stocks fell, football talent is still there. I like Cadogen too. I think it will be interesting to see Otah helping him out and I think Gross will take a larger role on the team now that he is locked down. Duke Robinson helping out at guard will most definitely be groomed and Chery looks like an athlete. I like all the picks in one way or another now. I don’t want to cut any of them. =[
I've read in a few places...
That we pay a LOT of money to UFAs. The LSU DT got one of the highest signing bonuses of any UFA at $25K, and Cantwell got $20K. For comparison’s sake, some teams refuse to pay more than $2K/player.
Thats good
Never know when you will find a diamond in the rough
