I would take a qb
with our last pick
hoyer
harrel
parker wilson
dare I say Chase Danils
a lot still would be left
No thanks
on JPW. Really not impressed by him
Daniel played in a shotgun, and is short (good or bad, IDK… just what it is).
Graham Harrell would be nice, but has the shotgun thing as well.
Hoyer… he really didn’t impress at MSU.

Hoyer didn't really have a chance at MSU
He didn’t really have a top-notch supporting cast. He’s got the intangibles though, and a great arm.
Yeah
not against him. Not sure if he’s a 3rd rounder though

DT
If anyone I would like it would be Sammie Lee Hill or Dorell Scott out of Clemson. I think we will wait on it. Both are way too early though.
With the trade for DE Brown
and deal w/Jake, the Panthers mgt has shown that they want to win now. If they pick a QB, it will be later.
Will Parker
I like what they've done so far
I like the Martin comparison to Sean Smith in the other thread. Filling needs with good players!

Dorell Scott DT?
Will give us some local help from Clemson University. With all the crap that went on in Clemson just last year, he might be a gem.

Do you think Martin might have still have been there at #93?
Was it a reach?
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Four corners have already gone
so I doubt he’d still be there.
I have no idea
There have been actually 5 CB/DB that have gone since #59. I think the Panthers are very confident in his abilities and how he fits in our “D”.
Will Parker
Did you hear the Draft guys?
They said they’re going to give the Raider picks some love. This ought to be good.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
5 picks until the Panthers
I will say either Duke Robinson, a DT like Hill or Scott (too early) or some true corner like Moore
Another Corner
People must be concerned of Moore’s size. I think we take him possibly. I want to stay off DT right now.
Bunch of TE's still there, Coffman for example

NFLDraftScout.com says:
Analysis
Positives: Long arms with a square build and room for additional growth. … At least adequate initial quickness off the snap. … At least adequate lateral quickness to generate some pass rush from the interior. … Learning to utilize his long arms to keep blockers off his body. … Locates the ball and plays with good hustle in pursuit. … Good lower leg drive to anchor against the run. … Gets his arms up to provide obstacles in the passing lanes. … Improved throughout the week of practice at the Senior Bowl.
Negatives: Raw and lacks the eye-popping athleticism to indicate high upside. … Not quick enough off the snap or when moving laterally to generate much of a pass rush. … Only short-area quickness. … Needs an open lane to close. … Adequate size and strength to hold up against the run, but struggles to disengage.
Will Parker
i don't get it
At least adequate initial quickness off the snap. At least adequate lateral quickness to generate some pass rush from the interior. Not quick enough off the snap or when moving laterally to generate much of a pass rush.
Don’t care much for this analysis, but I like his size and strength. I figure we’re not gonna find anybody to be a starter, so Lewis and Kemo it is. Our problems came last year when they were hurt, and after they returned from injury. Adding depth is key here. He only started 10 games in college at UGA. He’s raw and we’ve shown that we have very little ability to coach a raw player into a superstar. So we drafted a back-up…good for us, I guess.

heres a little
Corvey Irvin, Georgia
Height: 6-3. Weight: 302.
Projected 40 Time: 5.02.
Combine 40 Time: 4.99.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.99.
Benchx225: 24. Vertical: 25.
Projected Round (2009): 4-5.
1/10/09: Corvey Irvin was given the chance when Jeff Owens went down, and he stepped up. Irvin finished with 8.5 TFL and three sacks, earning himself a Senior Bowl invitation
Good size and strength
Not real fast but he can work the rotation I bet
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
I hope he can plug some holes
A good fill in player. Maybe he can be groomed. I hoped that they would say something about him on ESPN but they just said his name.
One more thing on Martin
Meeks went to both Pro Days, Utah and Troy so he saw them both up close. I bet he made the call on Martin

I don't mind the pick.
He’s from Georgia, so you know he’s going to be a well coached player. We’re not exactly grabbing the player from the top of the barrel right now. As long as he can stay healthy, we’ll see what happens.
Two picks in the 4th round!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I just don't see him
being as much of a run stopper as we need.
The first at #111
If the Panthers get another good player then that trade is looking better…hate giving up the 1st rounder but if Brown rocks then all will be well!
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Eh...
He only spent two years there; however, reports from the Senior Bowl were than his improvement over that week said a lot about his coachability. Further, our new DL coach and he got along well at the UGA Pro Day.

How about Aaron Kelly if he makes it down there?
Wideout from Clemson. He fell because of his low yards per catch total and the lack of success of Clemson receivers in the NFL. Think we should take him for a security blanket for if Jarrett doesn’t work out?

Good call
I don’t think we need KR or another CB nearly as much as we need more OL depth, especially inside.
If you saw Schwartz in training camp last year, he looked completely overwhelmed. And soft. I’m hoping he’s gotten better since then, but we probably need another backup OT.
I'm not thrilled with the OTs left on the board,
but it looks like many of them will still be there for our second pick or even in the 5th or 6th. I’d say go with a position that isn’t quite as deep in this draft.
Darin Gantt...
has specifically said that neither Schwartz or Bernardeau are “ready to start more than one game” at this point.
by MichaelProcton on Apr 26, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Duke
really fits our offense. He’s big and a good run blocker. Not very versatile but could eventually replace Vincent. We do need a Oline guy that can play both center and guard. I’m not sure if Bernadeau can do both, or if there’s anyone else in the draft we are high on.
I'd be happy with
T.J. Lang or Gerald Cadogan
Dunno...
Plenty have said he could handle the shift to tackle. Bernardeau, yes, worked at C last year despite being primarily an OG.

We have added zone blocking to our system.
We prefer the mammoth type guys, but i think every team has some zone blocking in their system.
How many LBs is USC going to send to the pros this year?
I count 4 so far. Plus a DT.
I wish NC State had that many solid LBs over the past decade, much less in a single year.
Ooh boy!
We’re trailing the Cowboys! That means NFLN will talk at length about the Boys’ pick, then go to commercial and skip our pick, then come back and talk about the next two picks after ours without mentioning us at all! Just like in round 3! Alright!
God, I hate the NFLN. But it’s about 1000 times better than ESPN. And that’s worth something. I guess.

Scouting Report
Analysis
Positives: Lean, athletic build, but one that seems better suited to wide receiver in the NFL. Rare speed and agility. Quick to and through the hole. Can make defenders miss in tight spaces and flashes exceptional elusiveness in the open field. Rare balance and the ability to cut at top speed in either direction. Experienced receiver out of the backfield. Runs with functional power, despite less than ideal strength, as he keeps his legs churning and spins out of tackles. A threat to go the distance every time he has the ball in his hands. Lacks experience as a special teams returner, but has the potential to be a standout in this area — much like former Aggie Dante Hall.
Negatives: Lacks the bulk to be an every-down back. Marginal leg drive for short-yardage situations. Undeniable athleticism, but Goodson’s production dropped in each of his three seasons with the Aggies — and it can’t be blamed on just touches as his yards per carry also dropped each year. Legitimate intangible red flags regarding his struggles to coexist with former Texas A&M head coach R.C. Slocum and his staff, as well as current head coach Mike Sherman and his staff, especially considering that Sherman publicly touted Goodson as the player the offense would be centered around when he took the position. Scouts will also question Goodson’s toughness after he missed time with sprains in his neck, groin and right knee since last spring.
Will Parker
So I guess
we’re thinking maybe KR and WR in the NFL?
I think he must be a potential KR/PR
especially after reading his scouting report. Seems to have good hands too.
Check this on Goodson:
Once called the “future of the team” by coach Mike Sherman, Goodson left the university after his junior year under mysterious circumstances. The talented running back could possibly shift to wide receiver at the next level, but injuries and problems with the coaching staff caused the player and team to part ways quietly. No announcement was made of his decision to apply for the 2009 NFL Draft, as he just showed up on the list of players who were leaving school early in January.
At his season-ending press conference, Aggies coach Mike Sherman hardly wanted to discuss why Goodson wouldn’t be back, and why a year ago Sherman had said he wanted to build the offense around Goodson. “We wanted to, but we didn’t,” said Sherman, whose first team finished 4-8. “We tried to, but it just didn’t happen.” Sherman said in December that he didn’t expect the junior tailback to return to the Aggies for his senior season. The coach wouldn’t elaborate but said it was because of a “combination of things.”
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
I can't imagine they would take a kid
with serious character problems in a non-need position. There must be something going on there that isn’t what meets the eye.
They've obviously interviewed the guy...
Just as easy that the coaching staff were the problem in the relationship.

Better than wasting a pick on a QB.
This guy’s actually going to see the field a couple of times per game over the next two years.
I'm confused.
It’ll take a lot of thinking to figure out what they’re thinking.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
They must
be planning to put him at WR, maybe to see if that will kick Jarrett into gear. He’s fast and has good hands, and he’s a good route runner.Apparently he also has the frame to bulk up a lot more without losing speed or quickness.
But the O-Line depth! The O-Line?
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Dude, why so negative?
Furney (which I like better than HurFox), has a long history of good drafts and smart decisions. They screw a few up, but hit much more often than they miss.
When your worst season is 7-9, you ain’t doin’ too bad.

Apparently they are looking at him for WR...
From the Charlotte Observer:
“New Panthers’ running back Mike Goodson, a fourth-round pick (111th overall), said on a conference call that the team told him they’ll consider using him as a slot receiver and a kick returner in addition to being a backup behind running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Goodson turned pro a year early after being disappointed with his playing time at Texas A&M. However, he said that wasn’t the sole reason he left after his junior season. He wasn’t used much as a returner in college, but scouts say he has the potential to excel there in the pros.”
Yay! Anthony Hill goes to the Texans!
Ant Hill is a good kid. Very humble, fantastic athlete. Congrats to him!
So far
trading a future first (AGAIN!?!?!?) for Brown, taking Martin a couple rounds too early, taking Goodson too early…
Color me unimpressed with the way the Panthers draft. Hopefully the guys can impress
True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
I think they will
There weren’t really any big holes to fill once they went DE, CB, DT. I’m sure there’ll be at least one O-Line guy brought in, and they’ll do the same thing they did last year and bring in a bunch of free agents to compete as well. I think we’ve done a good job getting what we need, and the more I look at it the more I like the Goodson pick. He could really add some zip to the offense, I think.
"A couple rounds too early?"
Projections for Martin, who was picked in the 2nd round, 59th overall:
NFL Draft Scout: 2-3 (High Late 1, Low Mid 3)
The Sports EXchange: 2-3, #72 overall prospect
Revenge of the BIrds (Cards SBN site): Late 2-Late 3
Scouts, Inc.: #61 overall prospect
NFL Draft Countdown: 2-3
So please, if you can, find me a place that had him rated as a 4th-rounder.

I was looking to the draft for help… and we’re reaching for 7th rounders in the 3rd/4th round.
True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
We're not reaching
that far. This kid was projected 3rd-4th, top FB in the draft. Might as well grab him while he’s there. You don’t have to fill every single hole in the draft.
FB's
always fall.
And it’s not like Hoover is just gonna disappear this off-season.
On the other hand, we lost OLmen like flies, and I don’t trust the guys from last year to fill in if injuries happen.
And we don’t have money to sign FAs.
True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
He'll have a year or two
to learn from Hoover, and then we’re not left scrambling when he retires or gets hurt. We have enough money to take a run at some older guys who get cut in the next couple of days like we did last year.
Hey, I feel ya.

Andre Brown to the Giants.
That’s a good destination for him. But I’d rather they didn’t keep adding talent to their backfield.
On FBs, NFLN says:
There’s not many of them in the draft. That’s a dying position.

Interesting
that they say he’s not a ball carrier but has soft hands and can catch it out of the backfield. So does he just fall down after he catches it?
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Good question.
NFL should get their analysts on the same page. NFL.com says: Fiammetta was the best fullback in the draft. He is an excellent blocker yet he has rushing skills, as he was a running back coming out of high school. He also has excellent receiving skills. His blocking is not to be dismissed, though, and he really beefs up an already-powerful Panthers rushing attack.

Let's take a quiet moment
to remember that we’re in the fourth round. From here on out, we’re not selecting people who are necessarily going to be among the 45-active during the season. You can’t screw up these picks too bad, no matter how hard you try.
But the point
is to find guys that can step in and help if need be.
Not to find guys that could be sub-par starters in 3 years if they’re still around.
True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
I think Fiammetta
would be a better FB on day one than any of the O-Line candidates still hanging around.
Not too sure about that, but eh.
Maybe we’ll target Parrish in the next round?
True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
Right...
So we’ve got guys with a chance to, from day one: start at DE (Brown), be the nickel corner (Martin), play in the rotation at DT (Irvin), be a returner/3rd-down back/slot receiver/jack-of-all-trades on offense and special teams (Goodson), and be a clear starter no more than two years from now at FB, if not sooner.

About the FB
Most teams don’t need a FB because they don’t use them.

Isn’t that what we picked Schwartz and Bernardeau for last year? And, umm, do we wait for Hoover to retire before we find a future solution at FB? It sure has worked at DE and S with the departures of Rucker and Minter.

True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
All they're looking for
is depth. Why spend a pick on a mediocre backup OT or G when you can get a good RB or FB and go for a better OT or G next year?
Who says they're mediocre?
And RB isn’t really a need. We have 2 stars, and Birmingham, who I think could be good.

But he’s got one or two years left at a minimum, I’d think.
He was great last year
I think he was our most underrated lineman
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Because...
with established starters, there’s no immediate need to put guys in the lineup right away. Guys aren’t just picked earlier because they’re more talented; in fact, they may be less talented. However, if a guy is more ready to contribute, he’ll probably go sooner. Think of Stanley McClover. WAY better than 7th round talent, but as an RSo, scouts just hadn’t seen enough and thought he needed work to be a contributor.
by MichaelProcton on Apr 26, 2009 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions
It all depends...
The Packers took another FB between our 4b and 5th picks, and the difference between #1 and #2 may have been the difference between depth in their eyes and a future starter.

Furney's 5th round picks:
2002: Randy Fasani (QB)
2002: Kyle Johnson (FB)
2003: Kindal Moorehead (DT)
2004: Drew Carner (WR)
2005: Adam Seward (LB)
2005: Geoff Hangartner (C )

2006: Jeff King (TE)
2007: Dante Rosario (TE)
2007: Tim Shaw (LB)
2008: Gary Barnidge (TE)

I second that
I can’t remember the last time someone even mentioned Carolina. There are teams out there that aren’t the Jets and Lions, or so I’ve been told.
First ECU prospect is off the board.
Davon Drew, TE, to the Ravens.
I think Duke’s the only NC school without any pro prospects.
Michael Tauiliili and Eron Riley...

But when the team kept King this off-season (he was a RFA), I think it negated any chance of that

Not over, but as of now
the NFC South drafts…
1- Atlanta… They took solid guys that fell to them
2- Carolina… Not too bad, filled needs even if it was reaches
3- New Orleans… Helped the D, but only had 3 picks, which hurts.
4- Tampa Bay… Not a big fan of Freeman, and I feel like they reached too much on DT/DE.

New Orleans and Tampa really didn’t do too much for themselves, it seemed to me. Atlanta’s looking very strong going forward.

The one team I am not at all fearful of next year is Tampa. No QB. Changing defensive scheme. I don’t care for their draft. I think they’re going to stink it up.

This might be our best value choice of the whole draft.

Kalil is young and good. I don’t think we need to get someone that won’t play. I think a CB/KR would be nice.
He's also projected
to be a decent guard as well, I believe.
I think they might actually go QB in the 6th
I doubt Shipley will be there, and there’s not a whole lot else left.
I'm starting to really like our draft.
I see us geting another DT and OL in FA. I think Dewayne Robertson is worth a 1 year contract. We need a guy that can play LT and I think Schwartz is limited to RT.
I think Otah could move over, with Schwartz stepping up on the right.
God help us, let’s hope that never happens.

I hope not too
Like last year when Gross was out, Frank Omiyale went in. I thought we might move Wharton there, but they wanted to keep him in as LG. I like that strategy.
We have our starting five and three backups that are active. A backup LT, a guy that plays C/G, and a guy that plays G/T.
Ugh...
Otah on the left would be an ugly sight.

NFLDraftScout.com says:
Positives: Massive player who can engulf defenders and physically dominate his opponent. … Good initial quickness off the snap to get out and block on the move. … Good drive blocker with excellent size and strength. … Plays with good leverage despite his height. … Can generate movement at the point of attack in short-yardage situations. … Plays with some nastiness and has the raw power to turn and pancake his opponent. … Quick, strong hand punch to jolt the defender in pass protection. … Natural knee-bender who plays with good leverage and balance in pass pro. … Long arms and strong hands to keep the defender at bay.
Negatives: Only marginal balance and lateral quickness to block at the second level, and spends too much time on the ground when trying to block on the move. … Lack of great quickness shows in pass protection, as he struggles to adjust if his initial punch doesn’t slow the defender.

Munnerlyn left a year early because he needed the money to take care of his sick mother. I doubt there’ll be any attitude problems, etc. from him.
Another great value pick
He was projected 3rd-4th round.
Yep.
Apparently Munnerlyn has been working out with Deon Sanders.
We might trade next years 6th for a 7th this year
who knows. Is Hoyer still on the board?
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
I think
they might just go after some UDFA QBs after the draft.
Hoyer. Harrell. guys like that

We have till pick 242
Then they get into the compensational drafts that they can’t trade. I think I’m going to stick it out.

Did anybody else watch the Prime U show on NFLN?
I did, and I only vaguely remember Captain. I think I remember him as the least athletic corner there, and got winded easily. Correct me if I’m mis-remembering that.

This is going to be a good article.
Best fullback in the draft, O-Line Depth, a couple good corners and a developmental DT we can throw into the rotation.
This is an article I will enjoy writing. Like a well cooked meal!

Don't forget
the pass-rushing specialist DE.
This is true!
Can’t forget the boy from Florida State. Awesome draft.

Michael Lombardi likes the Panthers 2nd round moves
Said it worked out great for them last year. And that john Fox D is at it’s best when it has a good pass rush.

Definitely on the D
I just hope the moves the team has made will be enough

I just hope they can get all of the picks signed.
How much cap space do we need to clear up in order to sign all these guys?
by r3 on Apr 26, 2009 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions
We should be good.
I imagine we’re around 2 million or so under the cap. If we sign our 2nd rounders to 4 year deals we should be able to clear them out no sweat.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Actually...
There’s a specific segment of the cap dedicated to signing draft picks in their first year, so I’d imagine that’s been accounted for.

Right
Can Brown make a big difference in his rookie year? If so then the secondary should be fine with Marshall and Gamble… and I guess Martin at Nickel???

It also doesn’t seem like we are making any moves to improve our run defense, or to help protect Jake. Seems like Fox just wants to run the ball, and rush the passer.

Irvin will seriously help vs. the run. Martin
is also excellent vs. the run and is a big big big hitter. Apparently Munnerlyn is also a hard hitter.
We also improved our pass rush with our big DE from Florida State.
Julius Peppers closing in on one side, Brown on the other.

That's an massive understatement. Lol

I think...
all told this draft worked out extremely well. We got great value picks, and picked up probable future starters at DE, CB, G, FB, and possibly WR/RB.
Time Test

I posted this at 6:30pm
So why does the time displayed say 3:30???
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
You must be right
But cmon SBN! They need to offset it to the time of the city the team plays in. Most of the readers will be there anyways.

Ha!
I’m coming in from South Korea, so the time is always wacky for me!
Depending on how the DE works out, I’m happy with the draft. The RB/WR tweener sounds intriguing, having the FB of the future is nice, DB and OL depth, and hopefully a KR/PR is basically what I wanted out of the draft.
I didn’t know most of the players, but from the looks, many seem to be pretty decent.

Jake Delhomme started his career as a UFA
Who knows what can happen?
I hope they pick up Aaron Kelly! I can’t believe he went undrafted. It sounds like a sham!

I think
playing with Harper at Clemson really hurt him.
Clemson was horrible this year, and it affected everyone’s draft stock.

I'd blame the O-Line if anyone.
Harper is overrated, but when you’re constantly letting defenders flow through to own the QB and RB, the offense is doomed, along with their draft stock.
