Panthers Draft Day 1 Recap
Here' the skinny: The Panthers traded their 2010 1st round pick for pick #43 to select DE Everette Brown. They then selected Troy CB Sharrod martin at #59. Both are positions of need so that was okay. I'm still shocked the Panthers ended up with one of the best DE's in the draft. Why did Everette Brown slide to the 2nd round? The guy seems to be the whole package and I really can't blame the Panthers for giving up next years #1 for a guy they probably had rated in the top 10 or 20. You can read is profile on SBN's FSU site here.
Charlotte.com has a lot articles on him including this one on him growing up in NC near our very own Julius Peppers. So fans did we upgrade our pass rush or what?
The Martin pick is a little more baffling as the Panthers passed over a couple higher rated CB's for him. He does have good size (6'1", 198) and he ran a 4.46 at his Pro Day. The word is he will slide into the nickel corner slot immediately so we have filled two big needs immediately. We'll get some more analysis up later but I wanted to get up a thread to discuss day one.

good players, what happens to peppers?
good players, fills two big needs. wonder what happens to JP. does he get traded now for a next year 1st rounder? that’d be okay and make everyone feel better about trading up this year.
I like the everette brown pick, and we’ll see about the guy from troy. just hurts to lose the 1st rounder two years in a row.
A lot to fill in today
I would like a true CB draft pick, some OL help along with PLEASE A DT, and potentially a FB. Never know what could happen. I’d be upset if we waste these picks on some LB’s or TE’s. Come on Carolina Draft Room. Welcome all to Day 2!
JP will be traded before mini camps. Not today. People might begin talking today since teams that wanted a young DE might still have concerns. I doubt we will see it today but yes I think what we are trying to do is get a #1 next year. And to LJ – it doesn’t hurt when we get first round talent. If we didn’t do the Otah move, we would have been at 28, which is fully acceptable for Brown. But to get him even later when we will be making more of a playoff push learning from our mistakes this last season, makes it seem like a Win-Win.
Mallory. Did some research yesterday.
Did you know that that safety we picked yesterday has Smith beat in every single category when they faced off in the combine? Their 40 yard dash speed was pretty much the same, but other than that he had a better vertical jump, better long jump, faster shuffle time, you can go right down the line.
John Fox might not be as crazy as we all think he is.

...
But he’s MUCH smaller, so one would expect him to do so, yes?

To do what?
Run faster, jump higher/longer, etc?

The taller player actually has more leverage.
Think Usana (sp?) Bolt. He is 6’5"
Of course, there are a lot of other factors, but based on height, he would not have the advantage.

I'm shocked
Sorry did not check back on this but that is crazy. It might be that he gets a better vertical but he needs to do that while running with Larry, Roddy, Moss, and T.O. this season. Tough to do. As I have been thinking about it, it truly is a good pick. Hybrid type guy that we can mold and have flexibility with.
Here's to hoping
they trade one of their 4th or 5th rounders to move up in the 3rd and snag a DT. Jarron Gilbert is still around, which is a bit surprising, but he’s a bit light if we want more of a run-stuffing type. Alex Magee from Purdue or Roy Miller from Texas might be a better fit if they don’t think Gilbert can bulk up enough. Anybody with me?
I'd like that personally
I think we need depth at DT especially and our secondary. Now I would not mind trading up and losing picks in order to get something we ACTUALLY need. The point is this – we get someone like Miller and we addressed our needs at the draft. We still have 20 of our 22 starters from our 12-4. Tougher schedule but we can play football. Take the later picks to get another CB, OL, or FB and we are done. If we ship Peppers through him signing his tender, we would get some potental for next few years. We are doing the right move here if we move up. I will be watching the draft closely since I believe that could truly happen.
What did I tell you Rev?
Once again, I called it. The Panthers first pick in the draft was out of the ACC… My source mentioned Brown was on their targets if he dropped into the 2nd round…..I guess Fox and Hurney still expect to move Peppers for some picks next year….I just don’t see any team making a trade for Pep, if they can have him for nothing at the end of the season….hopefully they will figure out something because I just don’t like being in the same postition next year without a 1st rounder……as for the this draft…..I think that we definitely got some guys that can contribute…Let’s see what they do today to get some
O-Line help….I was really hoping to snag Jarron Gilbert last night so I could create a jersey with “POOL BOY” accross the back.. I guess there is still hope today if he falls.

These first dozen picks
These picks are actually high value. Once you can sleep on it, talk to some people on the board, and discuss what you need to address soon, these picks gain value. Lions just traded out this pick because the Jets must have a strong feeling in a player that they did not get Day 1. Panthers may move up within the next 15.
DT Depth
I think we’re beyond picking players that will be starters. I hope I’m wrong, but I hope we at least get some size and depth at the DT spot. Some of you mentioned some names, but I didn’t really follow college ball close enough to know who these guys are. And I’m hoping for at least one OL pick for some depth.
Starters
These picks are one injury away from moving up. Carolina definitely won’t have them as starters but could have them in for many snaps. Gilbert is gone, true, but he is more of a DE. I’d rather have a true DT with some size and power.
It would have been hard...
to find ANY prospect better than what Kemo and Lewis give us.

Hard to predict
still a while before the pick, and teams are reaching like mad now.
Since HurFox like doing that anyways, no idea where they’ll reach now

Roy Miller
Does anyone know why he has a Scouts Inc. Grade of 66 but is a top 3 best available right now according to Mel Kiper?
Sherrod Martin ran a 3.98
in the 20 yd/pro shuttle! That is flying, especially at 6’1" 200.

There goes Miller
to TB.
If I remember correctly, they took a DT last year that some of us were hoping the Panthers would target as well

What if
Panthers go QB and take Brian Hoyer. I’d like to see that, Hoyer’s impressive.
With the DTs left on the board,
I would be happier trying out free agency after the draft. The only DT left I’d consider a decent fit is Sammie Lee Hill.
I think
Hoyer is a late round pick.
Of course, given the way this draft is going…

OL
Duke Robinson OG – OU
I’d like that more. Hurney and Fox read this if you want OL Help!
6’5’’ 329 and a 76 Scouts Inc Rating
hoyer
I like the Hoyer pick. I think Matt Moore could be the QB of the future, but if not him, then no one on the roster qualifies, so give hoyer a shot.
