CSR 2009 NFL Draft 1st Day Open Thread

Draft day is finally here my fellow Panther fans, a day of excitement and renewal in a sense. Today the Panthers may add to there already talented line-up the final pieces that get them back to the promised land that is the Super Bowl. Even though the Panthers are not scheduled to pick for hours, all they way at #59 in the second round we will be here discussing the draft as goes along in anticipation of potential blockbuster trades.

Even if the Panthers do not pull off a deal involving Julius Peppers they very well might still make a trade just as they have the past two drafts. One thing is for sure, someone will make a trade. My money is on New England doing something with their 4 top 100 picks, probably packaging a couple picks to move up and get a targeted player. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Cleveland, Denver or Philadelphia execute a deal or two.

Any other predictions?

This is now an Open Thread to discuss the draft!

Lets also make it a Roll Call. If you are new to this blog a Roll Call is simple, if you are reading this thread simply chime in with your name, maybe where you are from and whatever else you want to tell us about yourself. We've added a lot of new members over the off-season, may who have yet to speak out. So I want to hear from everybody!

I'll also be checking in over at Mocking the Draft as SBN has two bloggers credentialed for the draft, our Broncos and Eagles bloggers. They will provide behind the scenes coverage that is cutting edge stuff for the blogosphere!

So anyone word yet on whether Peppers has signed the tender? I sware Julius is a greedy, selfish little prick if he hasn’t.

Just announced the Lions signed Stafford

so actually the Rams will kick things off with the #2 pick, unless they trade it, which is what they are trying to do. Apparently the Jets want Sanchez

the draft

I think Stafford won’t be able to beat out Culpepper who came to OTAs 30 lbs lighter than last year. Culpepper is out to prove that his 4700 yd, 37 TD season was not all due to Randy Moss. He will forge a new hotness with Calvin Johnson and Stafford will set the team back a couple years. Brees is better than Rivers, Warner is better than E. Manning, and Culpepper will prove to be better than Stafford.

agree

Moreno is a great pick for Denver since Orton is a good QB, but he’s no Cutler, so they will run the ball more. I think every team has made good picks so far, even though Crabtree is easily better than Heyward-Bey. I think the Saints will take Jenkins, and combined with their FA pick-ups and last year’s 1st rounder, Porter, their secondary is gonna be a notch better than last year.

The Redskins got Orakpo, so we’ll be seeing him this year.

yeah he's all yours

Before I embraced the idea of overflow threads, our game threads were very slow with 800+ comments and tons of images. Everette was responsible for pretty much every one of those good defensive plays, so i decided that he would be THE image we posted. It was just better than having guys post pictures of headless corpses, etc.

There’s also video of Everette doing the hulk hogan thing, ripping his shirt off, and bench pressing.

He’s all about setting up libraries and literacy programs for Carolina and the guy spends his free time volunteering in soup kitchens.

Oh, and he graduated, so it really wasn’t like he was “leaving early.”

I don’t mind the trade. We just need that DT and secondary but a Fili availability is a sign that he needs to come to Carolina.

Bloody Utes almost has me converted to his side.

After watching that video with the one handed INT’s, I’d be alright with Sean or Fili.

Seems like a slower and more expensive HIlee Taylor who we drafter last year…

by ClaytonFire on Apr 26, 2009 7:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Hardly...

Taylor was measuring at 6’2.5", 242 before the draft, having never played at DE. Brown measures at 6’1.5", 256. Taylor was being listed at 250 by the Panthers last year, which would put Brown up to 265, basically the same size as Charles Johnson. Further, Brown’s 4.65 ain’t exactly much slower than Taylor’s 4.64 (which was as slow as 4.74.) But don’t worry about it. I’ll just keep my Columbia blue glasses off.

Trade for next year's first

Does that help with getting out of the cap hell that Jake and Julius have the Panthers locked in?

by panthersnbraves on Apr 25, 2009 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

Not immediately...

If anything, it’ll tie up more room since they probably didn’t necessarily budget for an extra 2 and 4 to be paid. Our last two guys in those rounds were Jarrett ($635) and Robinson ($395K.)

by MichaelProcton on Apr 26, 2009 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions

More on Martin

The Good: A tall, well-proportioned defensive back with good straight-line speed and range in the deep half of the field. Does a great job flipping his hips and getting in and out of his break quickly. Closes quickly on the ball and takes excellent angles in coverage. Has the foot quickness and agility to play some corner and does well lining up over the slot as an extra corner.
The Bad: Isn’t a real physical defender and doesn’t strike much fear into opponents in the secondary. Only an average open-field tackler and has a tendency to overextend and whiff on the ball. Struggles shedding blocks and keeping himself clean inside.

This site dissagrees a bit

http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/cb/Sherrod-Martin.php

They say that Sherrod Martin is an excellent tackler.

Strengths:
Terrific athlete…Good height…Great speed and acceleration…Smooth with fluid hips…Very physical…An excellent tackler…Will deliver the big hit…Active and aggressive…Very good range…Nice hands and ball skills…Very productive…Tough and will play through pain…Offers some versatility… Solid intangibles …Is still improving and has upside.

Weaknesses:
Has some health and durability concerns…A little older than the average prospect…Could stand to add weight and bulk up…Might be asked to make a position change … Didn’t always face top competition.
