CSR 2009 NFL Draft 1st Day Open Thread
Draft day is finally here my fellow Panther fans, a day of excitement and renewal in a sense. Today the Panthers may add to there already talented line-up the final pieces that get them back to the promised land that is the Super Bowl. Even though the Panthers are not scheduled to pick for hours, all they way at #59 in the second round we will be here discussing the draft as goes along in anticipation of potential blockbuster trades.
Even if the Panthers do not pull off a deal involving Julius Peppers they very well might still make a trade just as they have the past two drafts. One thing is for sure, someone will make a trade. My money is on New England doing something with their 4 top 100 picks, probably packaging a couple picks to move up and get a targeted player. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Cleveland, Denver or Philadelphia execute a deal or two.
Any other predictions?
This is now an Open Thread to discuss the draft!
Lets also make it a Roll Call. If you are new to this blog a Roll Call is simple, if you are reading this thread simply chime in with your name, maybe where you are from and whatever else you want to tell us about yourself. We've added a lot of new members over the off-season, may who have yet to speak out. So I want to hear from everybody!
I'll also be checking in over at Mocking the Draft as SBN has two bloggers credentialed for the draft, our Broncos and Eagles bloggers. They will provide behind the scenes coverage that is cutting edge stuff for the blogosphere!

So anyone word yet on whether Peppers has signed the tender? I sware Julius is a greedy, selfish little prick if he hasn’t.

Jaxon here, Charleston, SC
I’ll be watching the draft throughout unless…this gorgeous day gets the best of me. The beach is calling my name…must resist…but the beers are going down smooth ;)
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Just announced the Lions signed Stafford
so actually the Rams will kick things off with the #2 pick, unless they trade it, which is what they are trying to do. Apparently the Jets want Sanchez
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Parmenides Columbia, SC
I will be following on the internet as I do some work I need to catch up on.
the draft
I think Stafford won’t be able to beat out Culpepper who came to OTAs 30 lbs lighter than last year. Culpepper is out to prove that his 4700 yd, 37 TD season was not all due to Randy Moss. He will forge a new hotness with Calvin Johnson and Stafford will set the team back a couple years. Brees is better than Rivers, Warner is better than E. Manning, and Culpepper will prove to be better than Stafford.
i know i have bold predictions,
but since no one actually pays me for them, i can be wrong and it won’t really matter.
lol...true, true
and for that reason I’m not worried about saying what I think as well
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
STL takes OT Jason Smith
no surprise there. just what they needed.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
No freakin way
The Cheifs took Tyson Jackson. There was rumors of that but I didn’t give it credence. Passed on Curry…wow.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
All the mocks are already toast after 3 picks
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
yah if cleveland takes crabby
than I believe edwards will be on his way out if not the giants browns are really at an impasse
wow, thats a lot
first two picks and three players though none of them are stars
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Mark Sanchez for Jets
It’s funny to see how they react. Some of them are shaking their head and they don’t even know what they gave up for him yet.
First two pick though, that’s pretty steep. They made out like bandits.

Raiders take Heyward-Bey
what!!!!!! Just because he was the fasted guy at the combine… Al Davis has lost him mind
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Bengals take Andre Smith
so the combine fiasco didn’t hurt him. I bet the Bengals regret this one
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Bengals
they have shown they can’t deal with people like chad ocho cinco people who have trouble so I agree with Jaxon that their going to regret this one
HOLY CRAP!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Al Davis is a dictator!
Might as well put a Darth Vader helmet on his head. This franchise is doomed if all he cares about is speedy receivers. Poor Crabby. Just wow.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I'm ready to rant for 10 paragraphs just on that pick alone.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I wish the Raiders were int he NFC South
we would never have to worry about them winning the division
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
It's a good pick.
They got a good 1st receiver in Mark Jones. They just need a good offensive line to give David some time to throw, and he can make stuff happen.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
If anyone noticed (or cares)
Every pick so far is moving almost across the country to play for their team
stafford georgia to detroit
sanchez usc to new york
bey maryland to oakland
monroe virginia to jaxonsville
jackson lousiana to kansas
Just what the Pack needed
So DL coach Mike Tyrgovac must be happy
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Is it just me?
Or does his home video make him look like a couch potato?
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
The Pack has a big front line
Justin Harrell, Raji, Cullen Jenkins. That is some beef
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
workin out
they don’t want him under 335, but it makes you wonder why didn’t he keep Jenkins…we obviously needed him last year.
49ers should get crabtree
and let Bruce teach him to be a pro…Bruce is second all time in receiving yards.
Though they need a tackle
Crabtree has to be BPA on their board
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Crabtree is a 49er. It's official.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
They still don't have a QB to get him the ball though
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Calvin Johnson went for over 1,000 yards with his QB.
Hopefully he’ll put together a quality season. I’ve been thinking about that problem too. If the 49ers suck this year we have a good QB class coming out next year.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Yup, they took the best rated WR in the draft
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Broncos take Moreno
Good pick, Moreno is good. I’ve been watching him for three years and he his good, Like Emmit Smith good
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Good pick.
I’m surprised he dropped so far. No wonder the Skins took only 20 seconds to draft him.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Saints on the clock
They need help on D obviously
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
agree
Moreno is a great pick for Denver since Orton is a good QB, but he’s no Cutler, so they will run the ball more. I think every team has made good picks so far, even though Crabtree is easily better than Heyward-Bey. I think the Saints will take Jenkins, and combined with their FA pick-ups and last year’s 1st rounder, Porter, their secondary is gonna be a notch better than last year.
The Redskins got Orakpo, so we’ll be seeing him this year.
Except Oakland
Geez, could have traded back and taken Heyward -Bey in the teens easily
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
good point
they could’ve taken heyward-bey later, you’re right, but i think if they knew they were going receiver, they should’ve just picked crabtree. if they did, the 49ers would’ve probably picked Orakpo.
yeah, all the mocks are screwed
thats why the draft is so entertaining
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
i don't think so
they got that rookie RB from last year. i’m not sure what they need…maybe OT. I think they need a QB, but no one is available worthy of 15. Maybe a DB or a LB.
i don't like it
i don’t like cushing, but it’s not my choice.
Two straight USC LBers
Chargers will take Mauluga
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Denver now needs to trade for Peppers!!
- and next years #1.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
don't understand
i don’t understand it…maybe rey would’ve been good, but i think they should’ve picked beanie wells and traded darren “overrated, overpaid” sproles.
Let's see....
Now we see the genius of the Browns. Trade down and get one of the USC linebackers. They’re all good, just take your pick.
Well done.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Never mind.
Bucs got a trade! Woah! What’s gonna happen in the NFC South?
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
wells would be good
i don’t have much confidence in their current rb whose name i can’t remember right now. he’s good, but he won’t around much longer…but TB now has the pick
Why trade up for Freeman?
It has to be someone else
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Sounds like a reach don't you think?
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
freeman i hope
that way they get a player in the 1st rd who won’t play this season. i still think they need to give josh johnson a shot at the starting qb job. luke mccown isn’t that good, and none of those guys can outplay griese.
They traded up to keep the Broncos from getting him
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
the broncos wouldn't have picked him
IMO, Wells is the next pick. Then Cleveland gets the LB they want for less money…and two additional picks. It’s a good day for the Browns.
Broncos already took Moreno, don't need Wells
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
ayers
this guy on espn whose name i forget says they’ll get ayers.
idiot
I forgot they took moreno…i feel like an idiot for my wells prediction…i repeat, i do not get paid for my predictions, some of them are way off.
last year
looking at last season, just adding moreno and ayers and getting efficient play from Orton could get the Broncos to a 10 or 11 win division championship.
Browns traded AGAIN
This time to the Eagles. That’s 3 trades from the Browns already this draft.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
They need a linebacker.
At this point. Why trade so much? USC Linebackers are right there, your biggest need!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
saving money
the browns are getting more picks and saving money. i think maclin was the wrong pick for them, though, cuz i think they just drafted a #2 receiver, #2 behind jackson, in the mid 1st rd. but we’ll see when we play them this year.
lions...thoughts?
I think they go OT. both of their lines sucked, as did the rest of the team, so we’ll see. and they also pick again in 13 more picks.
Yup, Oher is my bet
Got to protect he kid, though they need defense bad
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
oher
is it possible that oher or another OT will still be available in 13 picks? if so, this pick makes perfect sense…if not, i dunno.
Yes, the way its going
a good OT should be there at 34
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
They better get a OT
Otherwise, God save Stafford.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
don't know about this pick
what about a LB? I dunno
So whose left
chris beanie wells
hakeem nicks
percy harvin
rey maluauga
clay mathews
michael johnson
Yup, Harvin and AP in the backfield/spread out

i think they should take hakeem nicks

"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
patriots will take a LB
maybe matthews or rey ma…
but i’ve heard before that NE people were targeting beanie wells

Nope Ravens.

How much better are the Falcons?
They got Matt Ryan, Tony Gonzalez, and now they’re getting a playmaker on the D-Line. Going to be tough to beat them in 09.

nfc east
we hafta get our secondary together. who out there is better than ken lucas? we’re playing the nfc east this year, and the giants and eagles picked some playmakers. i think we’re playing the two toughest divisions this year, the nfc east and south

boldin in arizona
i think the cards pick wells, cut james, and then have more money to sign boldin to a long term deal. especially if fitz takes a pay cut to keep boldin like he offered.
That's one hole filled. Good show.
So far the only ‘what the heck?’ moves has been made by the Raiders.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
It was a suprise, but not a bad pick in my opinion.
It doesn’t compare to the HUGE reach that the Raiders made.

heyward-bey

He could be good

the lions
okay, i expect the lions to get rey maluaga, and then i’m off to bed. if i’m wrong about stafford, and he actually proves to be worth the money, then this has been a great draft for the lions.
They got a safety
Poor Stafford….God Bless him.

so now the pats will take a LB
they actually need one, but i’ve been wrong before.

broncos next year
they still have the 1st rd pick they got in the cutler trade, so they have a 1st rd pick next year. but, yeah, he’s still crazy. i just don’t think the DB they got is worth a 1st rd pick in any year.

Let’s say the Panthers take a DT and get stronger.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I like this
It gives us sercurity. Hopefully now we can address some secondary next or a DT. We will have a late 1st rounder next year I hope so I am not too upset. We should not trade next year though. But exactly what JStew said, we are looking for a first next year.
Oh alright.
That’s not as bad then.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Yeah, not bad at all.
So we drop back about 15 spots (moving up a year) and pick up a fifth rounder. Not a bad trade, and now all of a sudden we’ve got our own poor man’s Dwight Freeney.

yeah he's all yours
Before I embraced the idea of overflow threads, our game threads were very slow with 800+ comments and tons of images. Everette was responsible for pretty much every one of those good defensive plays, so i decided that he would be THE image we posted. It was just better than having guys post pictures of headless corpses, etc.
There’s also video of Everette doing the hulk hogan thing, ripping his shirt off, and bench pressing.
He’s all about setting up libraries and literacy programs for Carolina and the guy spends his free time volunteering in soup kitchens.
Oh, and he graduated, so it really wasn’t like he was “leaving early.”
Have to ask
do you know why he fell so far?
Is it just concerns about his height?

I think he could play either/or
watched a bit of him when the Utes were on TV

If Fili is available, I'm on that banwagon.
If he’s gone, I’ll jump on yours. How’s that?
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I'm rooting for Fili
I don’t mind the trade. We just need that DT and secondary but a Fili availability is a sign that he needs to come to Carolina.
Bloody Utes almost has me converted to his side.
After watching that video with the one handed INT’s, I’d be alright with Sean or Fili.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I would prefer Moala as well.
I was just asking opinions on Macho.

Sean Smith
scouting report (that I did) here
Whatever you do, watch that video

Ugh....oh my god.
That is beautiful.
I wouldn’t mind having him!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Yeah
he’s a tall CB, with speed.
And comparisons to Asomugha (one of the best CBs in the league) is never bad.

It is beautiful.
He would be a challenge to Richard Marshall no question.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Don't we have enough
Utes on this team already? I mean, both of our All Pro players are Utes (Gross and Smitty). Do we really need another?
Wait… that came out wrong…

lol, I'm sorry
I guess we could take another USC guy.
Obviously Colbert (gone now) and Jarrett aren’t enough.

RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
Yeah
he wasn’t going to help my point, so I “forgot” about him.
True Blue Jazz

I wouldn't mine a thousand Utes, as long as they're good!
You could take 2008 USC team and make them the 33th team in the NFL.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Let's start the countdown! 9 picks to go till the Panthers choose!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
8 pick to go!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Dallas Cowboys are very silly.
Why did they trade to get Roy Williams for a 1st rounder and others? The bad trade is coming home to roost.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
The Dallas Cowboys has formed an epic fail.
If this goes through, then the Cowboys have lost their pick.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
The Bills have traded up.
They came pretty close to losing it.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Should be the DT shouldn't it?
We still have 4 D-Linemen. So it’s a Defensive Tackle.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I'm not sure last year.
I’m pretty sure it was the NT. Not positive though.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Peppers played most of his career at LE...
But switched to the right side last year. They talked a lot about how it was his natural position, and how it made since with him beign lefthanded.

I think he's at RE
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
And while I'm thinking about it, 7 picks till we draft!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Veikune gone
I guess we don’t need a DE though, so it doesn’t really matter
True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
wow before the last college season he was a projected 1st overall pick
amazing what on season can do to a player
Fili Moula, DT
We’re looking forward to having him.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Looks like
every commentary on EB have him as a tweener de/olb for the 3-4…
More evidence of Carolina switching to 3-4? He’s kinda small at 250-260…
Not gonna happen
Neither Meeks nor Fox is a 3-4 guy.
by MichaelProcton on Apr 26, 2009 1:28 AM EDT up reply actions
This
is NOT new information… meeks/fox not being 3-4 guys, it has been discussed over and over and over….
I just don’t see him fitting into the current scheme
Seems like a slower and more expensive HIlee Taylor who we drafter last year…
Hardly...
Taylor was measuring at 6’2.5", 242 before the draft, having never played at DE. Brown measures at 6’1.5", 256. Taylor was being listed at 250 by the Panthers last year, which would put Brown up to 265, basically the same size as Charles Johnson. Further, Brown’s 4.65 ain’t exactly much slower than Taylor’s 4.64 (which was as slow as 4.74.) But don’t worry about it. I’ll just keep my Columbia blue glasses off.

Let's see. Where are we?
4 picks to go!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
There are a few players I would like here
1. Moala
2. Sean Smith
3. Gilbert
4. Michael Johnson – Can a team ever have too many pass rushers? Think about the Giants SB run. Especially w/Pep’s questionable long term commitment.
Will Parker
Damnet!
There goes Fili.
What now guys?
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
2 picks till the Panthers.
Gilbert and Johnson are still on the board.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
The Panthers are on the board!
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
We have 3 guys then.
Gilbert, Smith, and Johnson. Who do we need?
We could get a DT as well. Good show.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Homer view
Smith.
Not so homerish…
Smith?
Who’s the best DT left (Gilbert & Johnson are both DEs)

Longest drumroll ever.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I don't think they understand that John Fox likes blocking TE's
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Well this doesn't make sense.
I think he will make the conversion to corner. I don’t see him playing as safety. That’s probably what John Fox is thinking.
Still…..who is this guy?
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Key word from that report is good hands and balls skills

from walterfootball.com
Sherrod Martin, FS, Troy State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 198.
Projected 40 Time: 4.41.
Combine 40 Time: 4.52.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.46.
Benchx225: . Vertical: 36.5.
Projected Round (2009): 3-4.
12/14/08: An All-Sun Belt first-teamer Sherrod Martin impressed with 80 tackles, four picks and six passes broken up.
5/19/08: Despite missing a third of the season with shoulder injuries, Sherrod Martin recorded 52 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.
I'm going to make this a poll soon.
Would be interesting to hear the responce from the fans. Personally I would have liked Smith better. Very strange. Very strange indeed.
I must ponder this.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I'm seeing
mid-3rd round grade on him.
The Panthers must’ve lost track of the round
True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
Yeah.
Well, maybe we might see them trade back into the 2nd round. We still have some good players on the board.
John Fox is on a completely different wavelength then we are. I have no idea what he’s thinking right now.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I guess I'll have to forget about Smith
sad.
That said, he seems kinda like Martin, but fewer injuries, has played CB in college, and is taller.
True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
Trade for next year's first
Does that help with getting out of the cap hell that Jake and Julius have the Panthers locked in?
by panthersnbraves on Apr 25, 2009 9:42 PM EDT reply actions
Not immediately...
If anything, it’ll tie up more room since they probably didn’t necessarily budget for an extra 2 and 4 to be paid. Our last two guys in those rounds were Jarrett ($635) and Robinson ($395K.)

More on Martin
The Good: A tall, well-proportioned defensive back with good straight-line speed and range in the deep half of the field. Does a great job flipping his hips and getting in and out of his break quickly. Closes quickly on the ball and takes excellent angles in coverage. Has the foot quickness and agility to play some corner and does well lining up over the slot as an extra corner.
The Bad: Isn’t a real physical defender and doesn’t strike much fear into opponents in the secondary. Only an average open-field tackler and has a tendency to overextend and whiff on the ball. Struggles shedding blocks and keeping himself clean inside.
True Blue Jazz
RIP Nick Adenhart. 4/9/09
Well, we had an alright 1st day.
One good decision and one bad decision.
Look on the bright side: At least we aren’t the Raiders.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Yep.
Though technically trading the first rounder isn’t good either

This site dissagrees a bit
http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/cb/Sherrod-Martin.php
They say that Sherrod Martin is an excellent tackler.
Strengths:
Terrific athlete…Good height…Great speed and acceleration…Smooth with fluid hips…Very physical…An excellent tackler…Will deliver the big hit…Active and aggressive…Very good range…Nice hands and ball skills…Very productive…Tough and will play through pain…Offers some versatility… Solid intangibles …Is still improving and has upside.
Weaknesses:
Has some health and durability concerns…A little older than the average prospect…Could stand to add weight and bulk up…Might be asked to make a position change … Didn’t always face top competition.

Rotoworld likes him too.
Hmm….

“Martin emerged as a ball-hawking safety last season after undergoing three operations the previous three years on his shoulder and hand. He has the speed and coverage skills to play some corner, which could make him a candidate for nickel back with Richard Marshall moving into the starting lineup this season.”

Big heads game.
Very strange….weird draft.
One last trade. Johnson is probably gone.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Alright guys.
Take it easy. Hope we get our DT tomorrow. Gilbert and Johnson are still on the board.
Revshawn is out. Article on the 1st day will be up in the morning.
