Jake Delhomme signed for Mega-deal

Carolina Panthers signed Delhomme for 5 more years which will put him under contract through the 2014 season.

Steve Wyche from NFL.com reports that the deal is worth 42.5 million, of which 20 million is guaranteed. With the extension now signed it will free up some much needed salary-cap room for Carolina. The Panthers still have 16.7 million in salary-cap locked up with Julius Peppers.

The Carolina Panthers still sign Delhomme three months after the worst game of his 11 year NFL career, throwing 5 interceptions and losing a fumble in the playoff loss to theArizona Cardinals. But coach John Fox and Marty Hurney said that Jake is still there quarterback and everyone has bad games. In 2009 Delhomme passer rating was 84.7 with 3,288 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

I agree with the move indeed.

Just not with the price. It’s kind of a big deal to have a QB that threw 5 INT and fumbled the football in a playoff game being paid a little less than franchise QB’s.

..."a little less?"

Without contract details, we’ll have to assume Jake’ll be on the hook at $8.5 a year. In reality, though, I’d assume it’s a back-loaded deal with higher base salaries he’s likely never to see. That said, though:
Brett Favre-$12.0 mil in ’08
Matt Hasselbeck-$10.0 mil in ’08
Alex Smith-$9.9 mil in ’08
David Garrard-$9.5 mil in ’08
Marc Bulger-$9.0 mil in ’08

Sorry, but you’re going to have a tough time convincing me that those guys are any better than Delhomme, and 8.5 is nowhere NEAR the $14+ mil guys like Eli Manning are making.

Why?!

I lost faith in this franchise after the playoff debacle last season. It seems I was right to think that way.
