Panthers Extend Jake Delhomme's Contract through 2014
Love him or hate him, it doesn't matter. Marty Hurney and John Fox think he's the right fit for the Panthers quite some time. The Panthers have extended Jake Delhomme's contract through 2014 for apparently $42.5 million including $20 million in guarantees.
"We all know last year was a good year that ended terribly, especially for myself," Jake said. "That's fuel to my fire to work (hard) this offseason the way we have been and I have been so far. I'm looking forward to adding a few more pieces (in the draft) on Saturday and Sunday and seeing what we can do."
"We think very highly of Jake and the contributions he has made to the Carolina Panthers," said general manager Marty Hurney. "He has been a leader on the field, is a talented quarterback, is a perfect fit for our team and was a big reason we were able to win the NFC South last year. He has also always represented the team in the highest manner and earned the respect of everyone throughout the organization."
Although as pointed out by usana_gaines, this doesn't mean he will actually be playing that long. And how knows what type, if any, salary cap there will be, possibly making any cuts down the road less harsh.

20 Mil Guaranteed??!!
Whoa, talk about hitting the jackpot for a 34 year old QB. Doesn’t seem we cleared much cap space unless unless its back-loaded. This may be a signal no deal for Pep is eminent.

Yeah
and that’s worrisome.
20 million?
Couldn’t Delhomme have taken less for the good of the team? I mean, he knows the salary cap issues the team is having…

Delhomme
In my opinion this could be a blessing in surprise. With his contract now extended it would be alot easier (if Carolina wanted) to trade him. Like Jaxon said, he is 34 and there might not be that much of a market out there for him. I think that this coming season will be a “tell all” season for him.
There goes half the decade...
Good to know I have some Sundays in the fall freed up now. I’d rather do anything else than to see all this talent rot away because of good ‘ol “gunslinger” Jake. Hopefully after this team falls flat on its face again, the Richardsons will finally wise up and get rid of this entire management and coaching staff. Yeah, I know…they won 12 games. They should have won 14 or 15 games. They should have ran roughshod over Arizona at home. And they should have at least made it to the Super Bowl. Instead, we’re left with another year of “it is what it is”.
Come on Hollywood
you sound like a fan who can never be happy. 12 wins was a good season. Jake made some awesome throws to win some games. yes it ended badly, just as it does for every team but one every year. Why would you want the team “to fall flat on its face” just to endure a total team rebuild. This all sounds familiar, like when we called for Capers to be fired and then we were stoked with the hiring of Siefert. No need to discuss how that turned out. I’ll take 12 wins every year and be happy no matter how it ends in the playoffs.

I never understand this
With the third best record, that means there were almost 30 teams worse than the Panthers. That means Hollywood could only say something positive about 2 teams… that’s about 6% positivity over all the NFL. The ultimate pessimist.
Actually it’s all the non-Charlotteans that have moved here and are jealous cuz the Panthers can kick their team’s tale… even with a 80 QB rating.

My 2 Cents
Hey guys, I had to join this blog after seeing the Delhomme news… Truth is, I’m a Lions fan, but I’m from VA and have followed the Panthers as well… This is, to me, a travesty, but Jaxon has it right – try being a fan of the team that went 0-16 last year… You guys got a fantastic RB last year in the draft (Stewart, I wanted him so bad) and you have alot of talent.
Don’t hope for your team to fail – Change comes slowly. Support your team, they have the ability to do alot next year as well.
Best wishes, Carolina.

I AM BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jaxon..Why do not you just admit that you have a man-crush on Jake? His extension…makes all true Panther fans want to vomit on your shoes! I agree, as of right now he is the best man for the job. But let him play out the final year of his contract and cut him! He has been a thorn in all Panther Fan’s sides for the past three years! Therefore, here is an idea….If the Panthers finish 7-9 like I expect them to do next year, Let’s send Jake, Hurney, and Fox packing and knock them out in one shot! I know…I know…I know….you expect me to be calling for Bill Cowher to be Fox’s replacement…but let’s not forget his love affair with Kordell Stewart….It is a much similar to Fox’s infatuation with Jake. I hope that Jaxon does not erase my post, considering he has tampered with the last three…..Just a thought from the man who has the inside scoop…

Are you finished?
Why should we even think about firing Fox and Hurney after they gave us a 12-4 season?
If they are fired, who can we hire that will be a capable replacement?
Are we ready to trust the future of a team to Matt Moore, Josh McCown, or a rookie from the NFL Draft?
The Panthers went 12-4, how can they then go 7-9 with almost all of their starters returning?
Jaxon didn’t tamper with your posts. He just erased the ones where you were offensive to others.
You don’t have the inside scoop.
Finally, I’d like to say I’m for this move. Bringing Jake back was the right thing to do. I’m just not for the price we got him at. 6.5 mill a year seems more logical.

BH Wells I presume
Why did you change your name? I didn’t ban you, I only erased your abrasive remarks … but don’t Why did you change your name? I didn’t ban you, I only deleted your abrasive remarks. I would appreciate it if you keep it toned down…don’t tempt me man…I’m on the edge!
I’m admitted many times I’m a Jake fan…and for good and obvious reasons. So if the Panthers win 8 games this year you will sing Jake, Fox and Hurney’s praises right? To win 8 games with a 80 rating QB means you must be a genius. I just don’t understand you guys that want to burn down the house just because it needs fresh paint. It must still have that youthful idealism
As for pick #59 if I’m so off make your own predictions and lets see what happens. I’ve got a separate post for that so put up or shut up ;) Geez..I. pick a player and you pick a conference. Don’t hurt yourself.
And to address your final…um… still thinking…

Wow.
8 Million a year for Jake Delhomme. Wow.
Just to defend John Fox though, there wasn’t much that he could do. He doesn’t have the money to sign the rookies, so he had to extend the contract of someone. With Jake’s 11 million dollar contract, it only makes sense to start with him.
With the draft only two days away, Jake’s agent had a lot of arguing leverage to get a big deal done. Hence the 8 million a year contract. It was easier for it to be given considering that it was Jake and the team has that much faith in him, but this was the primary reason for the deal being so high.

On the bright side
We could be stuck with a first round QB bust like so many other teams in the league. Delhomme is not the greatest QB to walk the earth but he is better then more then halve of the ones playing right now. Consider Payton Manning has multi-int days and that we have a winning QB whose made the playoffs 3 out of 6 seasons (2007 shouldn’t even count). Yet “fans” act like Fox and Hurny just signed David Carr to a $40mil 5 year deal. He’s not the best but we could be much worse off.
Stability
Yep; I’m a Jake fan, and have been since he played in high school @ Teurlings in Lafayette, LA. ……so I’m guilty as charged. Ok; I’m surprised also at the length & price of his new contract. Of course; he wasn’t starting on Sundays at 22 or 23 and taking all the beatings like a Manning, Aikman, Carr, etc. So he’s actually maybe closer to a 30 yr. old in wear and tear. He can easily play for the duration of the contract. He IS human and makes his share of mistakes. I cringe thinking about the awful Phoenix playoff game. I’m sure he does too. But hey; there’s plenty blame to go around; the whole team reeked for that game. Why was the OC calling so many pass plays instead of running with the best RB tandem in the league? This would have also kept the Cards’ offense on the sideline as an added bonus. Where was Peppers for that game? or the rest of the defense?….no shows as well. It’s too easy to blame just Jake for that game. I remember Jake coming in off the bench and leading the Panthers to the Super Bowl in his 1st yr. in Carolina. Evidently; many fans have very short memories. He played for quite a while with an injured arm, till he finally had to get it operated on. You saw what happened with him out of the lineup. I’m not believing all the trash talk about him. He’ s done nothing but win his whole life. He won the World bowl in Frankfurt of NFL-Europe. He broke the state passing records in college at UL-Lafayette,(pretty good considering some of the former LA Qbs……Bradshaw, Bert Jones, Doug Williams, Stan Humphries, etc.) And of course he led the Panthers to the SB also. A 12-4 record, and NFC South Championship ain’t too bad for last season. I’d sure liked to have seen it end with a win in the Superbowl; but hey, there’s only 1 happy team at the end of each year. I’d not be so quick to call for a replacement. We could do MUCH worse. He’s made mistakes; but I’ve also seen Favre, Manning, (both of ‘em), Steve Young, Marino, and every other QB have games with many INTs. It happens. What I’m concerned about right now is the Peppers situation, & how it’s hog-tying the team. We’ve lost way too much experience on the OL., and the D-Line needs some serious help. It broke my heart that Holt went to the Jags instead of home to Carolina….. Congratulations, Jake. I know you’ll work hard to get us back in position for a return to the SB. Of course; the schedule is a murderer’s row & our personel gaps need to be addressed. Also; I believe, by extending Jake’s contract in the way it was done; this will probably give the team more cap options……waiting to hear the exact details of it. GEAUX PANTHERS !!!
B and hollywood
B, it doens’t make all Panthers fans want to vomit on their shoes…because I like my shoes. But for me the problem is the length of the deal and the money…I just don’t want him to be our starter any longer than he has to. That means bringing in someone better, not just cutting him and downgrading for the sake of change.
As for hollywood’s comments, some of you may not like his negativity, but he’s right, we should’ve had 14 wins and a SB Championship ring. You can’t blame it all on Jake, though. When Jake played better than 6 turnovers, we were still giving up over 30 pts a game for the last two months of the season.
But in the end, I hope Jaxon is right and Jake makes us all eat our words. I wouldn’t mind being wrong, but I doubt I am.
Yeah, I would not prefer other so-called 'fans' to speak for me either

Jake Delhomme is hurting our team and it's chances of winning a SB
Im a Panther fan originally from Spartanburg S.C, where the Panthers practice in the summer and currently live in St. Louis where I see how bad the Rams are on a weekly basis. I have watched Jake Delhomme lose too many games for us in the regular season year after year and in the playoffs, to not keep him around. Jake will play this last as his season collect his $20 million guaranteed, then retire. We really should draft another QB to replace him.
This organization needs to move forward
I think we should take our 59th pick and draft the QB from Texas Tech Graham Harrell, the guy who broke all those NCAA records throwing the ball to Michael Crabtree.
I mean c’mon, we have Steve Smith, the most explosive WR in the NFL !!
Let Delhomme start this last year. Groom another QB. Harrell has the arm and the skills to be a franchise QB and theres a really good chance he could still be available in the 2nd round due to team needs
I really don’t believe we can win a SB with Jake at QB.

Sorry, but
Graham Harrell will not get drafted in the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd rounds and he probably will not get drafted.

Hey Jaxon
Please post an article about the impact of this extension on the draft and free agency. Gantt and Reed are reporting that this move will add $5 million in cap space. This is a big deal! We can easily sign a veteran CB to play nickel or add depth to the oline. The impact on the draft is big too. If we don’t get the quality DT we need at No.59, then we could draft best available and sign Dewayne Robertson to a one year contract to fill the void. Bottom line is there’s less pressure to draft on need, especially with so much uncertainty on who will fall to us at No.59. Even for those who want us to draft a QB, now we can!!!
I hear ya Jax
Jake’s the man, till he ain’t the man.Same for Fox and Hurney.12-4 people, jump ship if you like, but i’m ready for football. Go Cats!
kinda long extension, but that's ok..
really, its all cap driven. Jake’s been good to the team and will be for a couple years. I’ll be happy if he’s the starter for 1,2,3 more years or something, but that they really start to groom a guy to replace him in that 2-3-4 year time span. Is Matt Moore that guy? maybe.
Sign Torry Holt now?
Torry Holt is still available, and I thought he would probably have signed a short term deal with some team before the Panthers got enough under the cap to make a move. Maybe he was waiting for the Panthers to make a move to sign him? He has shown interest, and I think he’d make a good addition to the offense for a year or two.
Ij1983 Your saying you think the organization was right for re-signing him?
I dont hate Jake Delhomme.
I’m sure he’s a swell guy and fun to talk to.
I DO see why the organization redid his contract to free up cap space for tommorrow’s draft. And also Pepper’s terrible agent who doesn’t know how to broker a deal…What I don’t see from a business standpoint is Jake Delhomme as the best option for our team at QB. He is not consistant at all and has lost too many games by interceptions and fumbles to merit a 5yr 42 MILLION contract???
It’s ashame the entire organization has been hoodwinked this offseason
by Panthersfan4life on Apr 24, 2009 5:06 PM EDT reply actions
easy on Jake and panther's management
What other option did they have? If they didn’t restructure Delhomme’s deal, they’d be paying him $11 million for this season and wouldn’t even have the cap room to sign draft picks. Both sides made a concession here. Jake gave up the right to make $11 million as long at the panthers would make the concession of paying Jake for the next few years. It is highly unlikely that he plays more than two more years. He doesn’t retire after another 2-3 years, I imagine the Panthers will be ready to cut him by then and take the salary cap hit. Either way it was a move that had to be made and I’ll be more than surprised if the Panthers end up paying Jake even half of the “$42 million” contract. Haven’t you guys learned anything about NFL contracts by now?
All about the contract
If the prediction of an uncapped year comes about, all of the back-end money can get paid off without killing the rest of the team.
Even if Jake rides the pine for the next two years, it makes cap sense.

jake is awful
as a huge panthers fan, i think this send a message out to us that we accept mediocre performanes at best. first off, i dont know how one claims to be a jake fan and still hold his head up. true, the awful performance was one game, but he committed enough turnovers for at least 3 games. and he did this in a playoff game. me, i would have cut him as soon as the game was over. the man is an ok backup at best. i dont know, maybe he will do better next year. i hope for the sake of my sanity, but for any rate, no matter how much i hate him, and i HATE JAKE, he’s still my quarterback and i wish him the best. i just hope he makes his performance worth the money we spent on him……
Confidence boost
I really think that this will boost jakes confidence. He knows know how important he is to this team. He needs t come out like he did 2 seasons ago, before he hurt his elbow.
Who are you to question why your God doesn't want me to believe in him?
