Panthers Re-Sign Two Back-ups
David Scott with Charlotte.com is reporting that the Panthers have signed back-up LB James Anderson and S Nate Salley.
Both played mostly on special teams last season, although Anderson had two tackles against New Orleans after starter Thomas Davis briefly left the game with a sprained neck.
Anderson is in his fourth season out of Virginia Tech. Salley is also entering his fourth year and played at Ohio State.
Barring injury Anderson will most likely remain a back-up for the foreseeable future. You might recall Salley was set to be the starter at FS prior to the 2007 season before a knee injury ended his golden opportunity. He will now battle incumbant second year man Charles Godfrey for more playing time. He can also play SS so he is a key back-up in the secondary though he more than likely will remain a back-up in 2009.

Curses Jaxon! You beat me to it. Good post :p
I’m beginning to wonder though, how will this all effect the salary cap? Now that they’re on payroll, surely this must drive us under the amount allowed by the league. this might make it very hard to sign all our rookies to decent deals without letting someone go. Still, they’re both talented backups and will provide valuable insurance if the guy ahead of them goes down.
Bloody Julius Peppers. He is the thorn in our side. I can’t wait for him to be traded.

Already accounted for...
As soon as the tender offers are made, they go against the cap.

Correct
I had forgotten that as well. I guess they had waited for a better offer long enough. Will Peppers follow suit?

The difference is...
Those guys couldn’t receive offer sheets after last Friday. Peppers, I believe, can take them as long as he’s still under the franchise tender, whether he’s signed it or not.
