An Open Letter to Julius Peppers
Dear Julius:
It's now been almost three months since you requested a trade and I'm surprised nothing has happened yet. I can't help but speculate as to the cause of this conundrum nor can I help but remember your words from that fateful day:
"I don't want to leave them (Panthers) crippled or in a bad situation..."
Did you really mean those words? From my viewpoint Julius, you and your agent Mr. Carey have done exactly that...cripple the Panthers. We have zero cap space due to your record $16.7M franchise tender. That's a ton of cap space and let us not forget the Panthers have already offered to make you the highest paid defensive player in the league. For the life of me I can't understand why you wanted to leave in the first place. You are a legend in the Carolina's and your not even 30 years old.
If you're tired of living in NC then live somewhere else and fly in for the games. It's not like you couldn't afford it. Go live in Boston for six months and see how you like that Northern hospitality. Or work the beach in Miami if that is your thing. Strut the big apple or skate the Golden Gate, fly all around the globe...but I can guarantee that when you get tired of running you will end up back in the Carolina's. It's in your blood and it will call you home like a cat that hears the sound of an automatic can opener.
So how are you crippling the Panthers you ask? Simple, by not signing the franchise tender the Panthers are unable to talk to other teams about acquiring you. So you realize that your agent is trying to do something that is unheard of in this day and time, right? He is trying to broker a blockbuster trade between two very savvy NFL franchises without allowing them direct contact with each other. I'm sorry Julius but that thought just makes me chuckle. Who would more likely be able to leverage Bill Parcels against Bill Belichick, Carl Carey or the Panther brass? Both those teams have the picks, defense and cap space to make a deal for Peppers and they aren't going to deal strictly with an agent.
I can think of only one reason you and your agent are taking this approach. You don't have a list of four preferred teams; you have a list of one team. You realize there is a chance the Panthers ignore your single request and pursue a trade elsewhere. To improve your odds you want to run this down to the wire, force a draft day trade to your preferred destination all the while pretending ...hmm...how did you put it:
"...Whatever works out best for both sides is what I'm comfortable with."
Julius I just don't know what you mean by this. How is not signing the franchised tender comfortable for the Panthers in any sense? It makes it hard to sign back-ups to replace the ones we lost. It makes it hard to plan for the draft not knowing what you and your agent have planned. It will be hard to sign the rookies. The truth is this situation it not going to ‘work out best' for the Panthers no matter what happens going forward. They are just trying to make the best of a less-than-ideal situation.
Seriously now, if you want to leave the franchise then fine, just sign the franchise tender and I bet the Panthers grant your request. If you truly believe you are ‘maxed out' in the Panthers system then you should be willing to go to more than one franchise. If your true to your word and want the best for both sides and not cripple us further then you would sign the tender!
I have to come back to this whole ‘reason for leaving' thing. Was it Jerry Richardson's request for you to take Mike Minters team leader mantle? It's obvious now that was a mistake on JR's part, but it shouldn't have been a fatal one. If it was a personality clash with DC Mike Trgovac then you of course know he is gone now. New DC Ron Meeks looks like a guy that would be open to whatever wrinkles you want to suggest for the pass rush. Why would it at least not be worth a try? This team is coming off a 12-4 season and a division crown and you act like you're in Detroit.
So if you still insist on this course of action then all I ask of you on behalf of my fellow fans is two things. First, if you are still a Panther after the draft that you sign a 2 or 3 year deal of mostly guaranteed money that allows the Panthers some cap space. By not being traded it shows that you are either not the hot commodity you thought you were or your agent is a dolt who should be fired. Maybe he can work the deal he should have told you to sign last year.
Second, that you start a conciliatory tone with the team and fans in order to minimize the sure distraction this whole event will cause on the team...and you know...not cripple us through the entire season. If you come back and have a big year and then get traded next offseason it will be easier to swallow.
On a final note Julius, you have to admit that at this point in the process the Panthers have outplayed you and your agent. The Panther brass has remained on message at every turn by declaring their desire to retain you or receive the two #1 picks required by the CBA. They have stuck to that message for three months. Your agent on the other hand seems to think floating absurd rumors is the way to create leverage. It doesn't seem to be working Julius so I'm wondering if you are committed to maintaining this strategy and if so, can you please explain why you are intentionally crippling the Panthers when you first statement after the request was just the opposite?
Sincerely,
Jaxon

the crippler
I’m not calling Pep the crippler because of what he did to Daunte Culpepper’s career, but what he’s doing to his own career. Last year, with Peppers earning All-Pro honors, our defense was absolutely horrible for the last nine games. I think we went 6-2 in that stretch. We had games where we gave up almost 400 yards passing and 300 yards rushing. Without Peppers in those games, I don’t think much would’ve changed. It was on the offense to win it, and our only two losses in the last 8 regular season games came when we ONLY scored 4 TDs. So it’s not like we all of a sudden have a soft defense without him. The defense already sucked with him on it! Just ask Matt Ryan, Larry Fitzgerald and Derrick Ward. We still gotta get better in the secondary and against the run.
What’s really going on is that by not signing the tender, he’s ruining his own career. No one wants to deal with his agent because that is an automatic 2 1st dr picks. Pep ain’t worth all that. They want to deal with Fox and Hurney, but right now they can’t. So nothing is going on. I hope nothing happens and Pep just doesn’t play for a year. Screw that under sized power forward.
As a true tarheel & panther fan, this breaks my heart.
Let’s get something moving so we can all move on.
Whoa
I had connection problems and didn’t realize I had this posted 3 times until just shortly ago. Sorry about deleting the comment in the 3rd one posted.

I think you have to get a quality package for him
Though I’ll admit it might be tough. Every year, I have the feeling the Panthers are a few quality players away from dominating the division. Maybe that’s just history talking, though.
Not anymore!
Strange that Peppers is doing this, of all places to go to those cheaters up in New England. Without Peppers, I’ll sleep much easier the night before my Falcons take on the kitty cats.
Time to GO!
I used to respect Peppers, but I’m quickly losing it. Like everyone else stated, he’s not going about this in a smart way, and he’s totally being a HUGE Buddy F%#ker to the rest of his teammates. Hey Julius…sign your tender, and leave! Take Jake with you! Peppers is coming close to “Cutler” status with me. Thanks.

New to the blog here, but a committed Panther fan, so hey everyone.
I just hope they get something for Pep. I just don’t see don’t see who will take him. He killed us with all of the publicity. Hell, a second rounder seems good enough for me at least.
Welcome to the blog Ivan459
given the Cutler trade we should get a lot more than a 2nd rounder

Time to Man Up
I honestly believe that Pep doesn’t want to leave. If he did, he would not have hesitated to sign the franchise tender so he could be moved. I think his agent is a douche, and he’s taking advantage of Pep’s nice guy attitude. TO JULIUS…. Carolina loves and adores you, and if you really want to play outside linebacker, talk to Ron Meeks… we clearly have a need at LOLB (no disrespect Landon Johnson) and a LB core of Julius Peppers, Jon Beason, and Thomas Davis will strike fear in every potential ball carrier in the NFL. Save your rep, your career, and the pulse of the Panther Nation and rescind your trade request then fire your agent. GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd love if this was true
just fire the agent, and let it be known that it was his idea.
Plain and simple.
Julia Pampers
If he just wanted to play OLB, things wouldn’t have gotten out of hand. Peppers thinks he’ll be as successful as DeMarcus Ware if he played in a 3-4 defense. So this whole deal is about Peppers thinking about himself, not about the team. And you know he’s only thinking about himself since he’s already picked the teams he would like to play in.
What I don’t understand is, other than possibly the Patriots, what other team has a better chance to get to the championship than the Panthers (assuming the Patriots were one of the teams he wanted to play in)? All Peppers cares about are the stats.
The whole list of 4 teams was stupid
since the Panthers couldn’t do anything with the list anyway.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Dump Peppers
The Panthers have a cancer and his name is Julius Peppers.
Dump the ungrateful m*ther f*cker .
If he doesn’t want to be here then get rid of him.
Take a couple of 2nd rounders and some cash and let’s get this show on the road.
He’s only going to be a cancer in the locker room and bring negative energy to the whole team.
A note to Julius:
You might want to consider getting rid of your agent.
I think I speak for all Carolina fans when I say we were staunchly in your corner when all of this started but now you’ve allowed him to turn you into in T.O., ocho-cinco, Plax and host of others you don’t want to be associated with.
And we no longer want to be associated with you.
I felt the same way back in January
But since have mellowed on the situation. Welcome to the blog Madonna Dahmer!

Smarter than you think
Obviously Jaxon, both Peppers and his agent are smarter than any of us die-hard Panther fans gave them credit to be. You’re right, when you say that Peppers and the agent have “crippled” us. They have shown total control of this situation. Hell, even John Fox is out there now saying how great Peppers is and that no matter what the cost, he’s worth it. He compared him to Eli Manning and Tom Brady in terms of value to his team when he explained away the high cap number Pep carries. It is fun for us to go around and say things like Pep and his agent are idiots, hell, I even enjoy saying it. But the reality is that we’re sitting here screwed because they hold the cards. The worst thing that happens to Pep is that he makes $16.7 million next season (a million a game) and maybe listens to a few boos the first game. After that, people will move on and Pep and his agent will laugh all the way to the bank. Meanwhile we are strapped and just sitting here waiting for them to make a move or not make a move. They are keeping control by not signing the tender. I think Pep is content to take our money and our cap space and punish us for putting the franchise tag on him which we didn’t have to do. Remember, that was our choice. When he said he was only going to one of four teams, it looks like he meant it. We could have been rid of the guy back in February and played hard-ball with Gross. Instead, we gave Gross the keys to the bank and now have this mess with Peppers. Instead of firing Pep’s agent, I say fire Hurney for getting us in this mess. Just watch and see how crazy this looks when everyone is wearing #90 jerseys to games in a few months and Pep is cashing in.
Are they smarter than we think?
That remains to be seen. It took what, 3-4 days for Cutler to be traded? Peppers is going on 3 months. If he really wanted to JUST leave he should have been gone by now. If he’s just posturing for more money then why destroy his relationship with the franchise and the fans who buy his jerseys? None of it makes sense unless he had a single destination in mind (and I think its NE). The Cutler trade to me proves his agent is a dolt so I don’t see how you can say they have ‘total control’ of the situation.
I’m not sure what to make of your username, maybe you’re trying to be smart ass. Nice way to put yourself on a short leash.

New opportunity...
Now that Cutler has been traded, the Broncos have two 1st round picks this year (12th and now 18th as well).
They still need to upgrade their D- I think this is a real possibility. Cutler is out of the picture, but a mid round 1st rounder for Peppers sounds pretty decent at this point.

The Broncos now have the ammo to come after Pep
Two firsts this year and next. Oh…I forgot..Pep only wants to go to NE

My opinions
This letter totally reflects my opinions and I find this letter poetic in every sense of the word.
Let him Go Please!!!
Pepper is tired. The Panthers is not using him right anyway. He will be better suited for a 3-4 defense, so he can roam the field. He’ll run any running back down. Get rid of Jake cause he chokes everytime since doing chicken commercials. Does anyone realize why we keep losing???
What is 12 Games?
If we keep losing the big games then what’s the point? We need another QB.
Julius..stay the course!
It seems that only you, your agent and the Panthers know what is in your best interest. Signing the franchise tender is certainly not a route to realize your goals, Once signed, you are Panthers Property and can be shipped anywhere – Detroit, Oakland, Buffalo. It has nothing to do with which teams you believe will allow you to show your full abilities, and maybe leave your name hanging with some of the all time greats. It will be whoever offers the most draft picks. Period. The Panthers brass realize you have only a few good years ahead of you, but don’t care about your goals. All NFL players are assets, to be disposed of when the greatest return can be realized.
I know you have enough money to last 10 lifetimes, but my suggestion is simple. Avoid everyone in the Panthers organization. Don’t show up for training camp (you don’t have to..you are not under contract) until the Panthers offer to trade you to one of your teams, or guarantee not to franchise you next year. Otherwise, hold out until week 10, sign, play the last 6 games, collect $7 million, and start the game over. They won’t do it again at $20 million in 2010.
